Breaking the Rules

Rate this book
Growing up in small town Wisconsin, Carly Turner couldn't wait to escape when she graduated high school. Now, she's living the life in New York City, even if she isn't seeing her name in lights like she used to dream about at night. She's living paycheck-to-paycheck, working behind the scenes in small theaters off Broadway. When there's an equipment malfunction the week before opening night, Carly makes a call that winds up changing everything.

Life in the city isn't all it's cracked up to be. While she feels like she's getting closer to making the move from behind the scenes to center stage, she misses being surrounded by people who understand the quirks that come from living in a town of five thousand people. That, and the fact that he's sexy as sin, make Adam everything she feels like she's missing.

The only problem? He's her best friend's kid brother...

Adam Sanders wants to settle down, find a good woman and start a family like he sees so many of his friends doing. But how is he supposed to meet Ms. Right when he's constantly on the road for work? When he's sent to New York to handle a repair that would typically be contracted out as a favor to his boss, he's just about to his breaking point.

Everything changes when the stagehand sent to open the theater for him is none other than his big sister's childhood friend. The same girl he lusted after as a teenager. Could this be fate's way of showing him that he was looking in the wrong place for love?

As Adam and Carly's friendship develops, lines will be crossed and rules will be broken. Will they be able to come out the other side without destroying everything they had back in Brooklyn?

With the exception of three years spent in the middle of Nebraska, H.B. Heinzer has called southern Wisconsin home. During that time in Nebraska, she imagined one of her favorite authors living on the far western edge of the county, just south of the highway. At the time, becoming a novelist was a distant dream for her. Now, she is the author living in that location. Ironically, she later found out that same favorite author lives just outside the town HB lived in for the first eighteen years of her life.
Now, HB lives in the middle of nowhere but still close enough to the city to not feel isolated. It's the perfect place to let her two kids run and explore their huge yard, teach them about the food chain as they prepare their first-ever garden and debate building a chicken coop. It's one of those dreams that is only possible thanks to the amazing opportunities that have come through writing.

This is story is connected to Bent. I fell in love with Julia & Micah’s story and I’m so glad to read about Carly Turner, one of Julia’s best friends growing up & Adam Sanders, Julia’s younger brother.

Carly left Brooklyn, WI around the same time that Julia did after graduating high school. Both of them couldn’t get away from that small town of 5,000 fast enough. Carly is a set designer for a theatre company in NYC. Someday she’d like to become a director. This story opens with Carly having to deal with a problem with the stage lighting during Hell Week. The week of rehearsing & making sure everyone & everything is ready for the the show’s opening night. She places a call with ETS to find out what the problem is & who shows up to the rescue…..Adam Sanders, her best friend’s little brother. Only he’s not the gangly looking teenager she remembers. He’s grown up & makes Carly think & feel things she shouldn’t be having for him. This totally goes against the rules she’s set in place for herself.

Things start slowly, they reminisce & rebuild the friendship they had growing up. But the attraction is there for both of them & neither one wants to be the first one to cross the line, so to speak. After time, they decide to cross it & see what may develop. Carly has been on her own most of her life & doesn’t trust anyone with her heart. She has abandonment issues even as an adult. But how do you make a relationship that’s just starting out work when you’re in NYC & he’s in Wisconsin? They take every moment they can to be together. Adam travels a lot to the city & now he has more reason to want to be there. Neither one of them has told anyone back home about them being together. Secrets?? Feeling like Carly’s dirty little secret? I felt bad for Adam when he wants to tell his sister, but Carly isn’t ready yet. She thinks that Julia will be upset. Really?? I found Carly to be somewhat immature at times, but I took into account that she was abandoned by her mom when she was a toddler & it had a lasting emotional/painful effect on her as an adult. Adam is patient and surprised by the deep feelings he’s beginning to have for Carly. And he wants more. Will Carly give him that or run for the hills?

This was an enjoyable story of breaking down the walls around your heart to finally let someone in & taking chances. I also loved Gran Turner, Carly’s grandmother and the one who raised her. I can picture her out on the porch, on her farm, in her rocking chair at the end of the day. And even though Gran is getting on in years, not much gets by this woman.

All in all…this was a great book to read & I will continue to grab this author’s books!

Breaking The Rules is book 2 in H.B Heinzer's Back To Brooklyn series. This is my first read from H.B Heinzer and it definitely will not be the last. I do have to admit that even though Breaking The Rules can be read as a standalone, I really wish I had the chance to start with book 1. Don't get me wrong this was a fantastic introduction to this author, and even though I was missing bits and pieces of the story between Julia and Micah, I still could follow along nicely in this story.

"He needed this woman more than he needed his next breath."

Let me start off by saying that I had a LOVE/HATE relationship with Carly. I was all for the girl trying to make it on her own in the city, good for her, she is an independent woman that I can certainly relate to. When Adam came in to the picture, and she was having the internal struggle of being with her best friend's little brother, I just wanted to smack some sense in to her! I absolutely LOVED Adam in this story. Sweet, caring, charming, and sexy as hell could sum him up nicely. He was the perfect match for Carly in so many ways. I believe he grounded her. He reminded her of better times back home when she was surrounded by family and friends.

"If you can promise me that you will trust I won't leave you, I will do everything I can to show you every day that I'm here for the long haul."

This isn't the typical love story that I am used to. I have been reading about couples who meet, have sex, and fall in love instantly and live happily ever after. Breaking The Rules was like a breath of fresh air. I loved how the relationship between the characters and the story lines were so relatable. There is a slow, sensual build between Adam and Carly's relationship, but there are also issues that they both need to work through in order to find themselves and to be comfortable in their relationship without worrying about other people's opinions.

I have to say that I was definitely intrigued with Julia and Micah, and I can't wait to go back and read BENT, to get a more detailed idea of what happened between those two, because it seems like it is going to be intense.

First of all I would like to thank H.B. Heinzer for providing me with an ARC copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Breaking the Rules is book #2 in the series and the story of Adam and Carly.

Carly is a small town girl trying to make it big in the Big Apple.
Adam is her best friend’s little brother who (unknown to her) had a school-boy crush on his big sisters best friend.

H.B Heinzer has done it again! I didn’t think the series could get any better but I was proved wrong.

What I love about H.B Heinzer’s characters is that they are not physically perfect. They’re real, with real imperfections and that just pulls me further into the story and allows me to connect to the characters on a deeper level.

On more than one occasion I found myself laughing at some of the antics in the book, wanting to get my hands on Carly and wring her neck and actually shouting at my Kindle! Phew, tis a good job they’re fictional.

H.B. Heinzer never fails to deliver a book that just flows; it pulls you in and guides you through right to the end, leaving you feeling warm and satisfied.

The characters develop through the book at a steady pace and you are able to keep up with their growth as they go from being scared on the journey of self-discovery.

The scenes are set well and flow from one to another effortlessly; you manage to fall into the scenes and can clearly picture them.

I’m looking forward to reading more in the Back To Brooklyn series.

I don't usually do "Romance" so I am not well versed in this genre. I found myself getting frustrated with the characters in this book, specifically the main character, for the same reason I get frustrated with some people in real life. "Your problems and drama could be solved or mitigated with a 10 minute conversation you aren't having."

The first half of the book only has three characters, with references to characters in the previous "Back To Brooklyn" book (which I did not read) and then some more characters are introduced later. In all, it was not a very engaging book, but a quick read none-the-less.

Only 2 or 3 "sex" scenes, so not very good "erotica" if that is what you're looking for.

+1 star for the novelty of a romance novel.

***I received an ARC copy of this book in exchange for an honest review ***

Breaking The Rules is Carly Turner and Adam Sanders’ story, whom you meet in Bent. Carly is living in New York, working behind the scenes in small theaters off Broadway. When there is a problem with the lights, Carly has to call a company to get the problem fix. Carly is surprised to find that the guy who comes to fix the light is none other that Adam Sander the younger brother of her best friend Julia.

“He was family friend, nothing more. Now, if only she could get her body to listen to those words.”

“Seeing Adam had stirred up emotions within her that she wasn’t prepared to face. Lust loneliness, happiness, longing”

Adam is just as shocked to see Carly the girl he had a crush on and whom he lusted over during his teenage years. Adam works hard, all he actually wants is to settle down, get married, and start a family, but his job keeps him on the road and he thinks he is never going to meet that special person.

“In some ways he’d waited his whole life to have theses moments with Carly. She’d never know it, but she was the first he had ever thought about spending the rest of his life with back when he was young and foolish”

I liked Carly she was sweet, independent, has a bit of a stubborn side, and a few times she made me cross as she shut Adam out. She had left the small town of Brooklyn, Wisconsin, to follow her dreams of seeing her name in lights, and while she was not living that life yet she was trying. Parent issues have left her a little guarded, with insecurities, she has always found it hard to open up to anyone to let anyone get close for fear that they may one day leave her.

"Never before had she felt a connection to another person that allowed her to sit in silence without fidgeting. It was just another sign that what she shared with Adam after such a short time was something special” ~ Carly

In my review of Bent I said that I liked Adam, well I can tell you now that after reading this one, I love him, he is just wow, adorable, charming, funny, patience, sexy, romantic, my list could go on, and on ☺ I think for those of you who have a list of book boyfriends once you have met Adam he is going to be added to your list.

“He needed to find a way to convince Carly that they were perfect for one another.”

"He wanted her to have memories of their time together to tide her over until the next time he came to town".

I loved the storyline it was really sweet, finding the one, about overcoming your fears. All the characters I felt I was able to connect to on many different levels. Carly and Adam are great, they have some hot steamy love scenes, and I honestly got the feeling that they were made for each other. I will admit when I first started reading having discovered at the end of Bent that Carly and Adam were a couple. I was expecting this book it to be about the next stages of Carly and Adam’s relationship; however, it wasn’t it was so much more. It was about, how they met, became friends; fell in love, their highs and lows, decision and choices that they have to make. So it definitely took me on that emotional rollercoaster that I love.

“Whether it was the chemistry or the fact they had known each other on a different level for so many years, it felt natural to walk down the street curled under Adam arms. The relaxed smile on his face when he glanced down at her said the feelings were mutual”

I didn’t care that in the back of my mind, I knew they were already a couple. I was hooked I wanted to know their story. I loved the part when they had their first date. FYI…. I have been to M&M world in New York and I’m still in shock how much a 1lb of pick your own M&M cost.

What I also like was although I knew some parts of the storyline because I had just read Bent, it didn’t feel that I was rereading the same bits again as you get to see it from Carly and Adams perspectives. So could actually read Breaking The Rules as a standalone (OCD traits means that I couldn’t do it) but I will warn you I think it will leave you wanting to read Bent Julia and Micah’s story.

I enjoyed Bent, but I loved Breaking The Rules, and I read most of it with a big grin on my face. Oh did I tell you how much I love Adam ☺? My only disappointed was that due so social commitments I could not read this book in one sitting. H.B. Heninzer you have a new fan in me. I'm so looking forward to reading more books from the Back to Brooklyn series.

If there isn’t some sort of rule about annoying kid brothers growing up to be walking, talking sex, there should be.

This story takes place during the same time period as Bent, but it is from Carly and Adam's point of view. Carly is Julia's long time friend and Adam is Julia's younger brother. So we still have the drama from some of the events that occurred in Bent but from a different perspective. And we get the more detailed story of Carly and Adam.

Julia and Carly had lost touch over the years, but now that Julia is back in their hometown of Brooklyn, they begin talking again. And Adam and Carly run into each other in New York where Carly now lives and Adam travels for business. Their friendship is rekindled and quickly turns into something more despite the fact they are not sure what they were really getting into.

Carly and Adam are really a sweet couple. They are flirty, playful, sexy, and truly care about one another. But lack of time together, logistics, insecurities, fear of upsetting Julia and an unknown future get in their way. They struggle to make it work, but sometimes there is just too much in the way.

Carly has trust and abandonment issues stemming for her childhood that significantly affect her approach on relationships. She is guarded, stubborn, independent, and insecure. She lives in New York although her life there is far from glamorous or perfect. She drove me crazy at times with her pushing Adam away, refusing to tell anyone about them, and just being fearful.

Carly never let herself form emotional attachments with anyone. When you allowed yourself to form those bonds, you were setting yourself up to feel the pain of a broken heart.

Adam is younger, but actually more mature. He lives in Brooklyn, WI. He is successful, determined, sexy, and protective. He has had a crush on her since he was a kid and knows what he wants. But he has trouble making Carly understand. And he can only take so much and be so patient.

In some ways, he's waited his whole life to have these moments with Carly. She'd never know it, but she was the first person he ever thought about spending the rest of his life with back when he was young and foolish.

So will they ever figure out if it is worth fighting for and somehow be able to merge their lives into one?

"If we do this, there's no turning back..."

This book was not quite as dramatic and suspenseful as Bent. But it did have relationship drama and issues. I enjoyed being back with the characters from Brooklyn, Wisconsin: Julia, Micah, Caleb, Gran, Annie, as well as getting in deeper into Carly and Adam's relationship. This is a tight group that have dealt with a lot but come out okay as long as they have each other as support. The characters in this series definitely have flaws and make mistakes, but that makes them more real and engaging.

Thanks to HB Heinzer for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review. Will be posted at Reviews by Tammy and Kim

Breaking the Rules is the second book in H.B. Heinzer’s Back to Brooklyn series. Where Bent (Back to Brooklyn #1) followed Julia and Micha, the second installment follows Julia’s best friend from childhood, Carly, and Julia’s brother, Adam.

Adam and Carly reunite in New York after unexpectedly crossing paths. There’s always been some level of chemistry between the two characters, but neither took the initiative to move their friendship to the next level. Carly is the “older woman” and never saw her best friend’s kid brother as being boyfriend material. Until now.

The couple has an amazing connection and strong feelings for one another, which makes for a wonderful relationship on paper. As long as they’re together, in New York, everything is perfection. Shortly after they get together, their connection begins to be tested by a number of outside influences. Adam must constantly travel for work, leaving the pair to handle the pressure and challenges of a long-distance relationship. Not to mention the guilt Carly feels for dating her best friend’s brother. She doesn’t know how Julia will react to the news, and Carly isn’t thrilled to find out.

Despite all of the obstacles Adam and Carly face, will they be able to make it work? Or will they crumble to the pressure of distance and the opinion’s of their loved ones?

If you’re looking for a smooth read that you can devour quickly, this is the book for you. I could have easily read this book in one sitting, however, I had to stop several times to do mundane tasks like laundry and eat. Ultimately, I had this book finished in a matter of hours and enjoyed every single page of it.

Even though Breaking the Rules is the second book in a series, I felt like it could also serve as a standalone novel. Julia and Micha do have a minor storyline in BtR, but their situation was summarized in such a manner that if you haven’t read Bent you can still follow the plot in Book #2 without any problems. With that being said, BtR was such an outstanding novel, you’ll be dying to read Bent just to satisfy your need for more from these characters. Both books have landed on my list of favorites!

The plot was engaging and had me hooked from the first chapter forward. The situations (long distance, dating someone who may or may not be “off limits”) were relatable and realistic. I rooted for the main characters, struggled when they hit obstacles, and blushed when reading the steamier scenes. Overall the story was extremely satisfying, and I’m sad it’s over.

If you haven’t gotten your hands on Bent or Breaking the Rules yet, you are missing out on two incredible reads! Do yourself a favor and one-click both of these fantastic novels. You will be thankful you did.

Laura's 4 1/2 Star Thoughts

What happens when you fall for your best friends younger brother? Carly Turner has done just that.

Leaving her life in Wisconsin behind, she sets her sights on New York City and Broadway, hoping to make a name for herself. Working behind the scenes of plays off Broadway, she dreams of the day that she takes center stage. When a lighting problem in the theater brings Adam Sanders back into her life.

Adam works as a lighting contractor. He travel the country fixing lighting problems and handling sales for the company that he is employed with. Adam is now wanting to settle down and have a family. All his friends are married and he feels that this is the next step he wants to make to complete his life. Finding the right girl has been the issue though. When a chance encounter with his childhood crush, he thinks he has found his girl. He never thought he would see Carly again.

What starts out as two friends enjoying each others company, quickly turns into a smoking hot, hidden relationship. They work to make their relationship work, while they both live in two different cities, not knowing when they can or will be together again. When Adam decides it is time for his sister to know who he has been spending all his time with, Carly puts on the brakes. She is afraid that her dear friend Julia will not be able to handle the shock o her and Adam's relationship.

Carly has spent a great deal of her life feeling like she does not have what it takes to be in a relationship. Abandoned by her parents and raised by her grandparents, she doesn't know what being loved it truly like. Adam sets out to prove her wrong and show her just how worth being loved she is.

I loved Adam. He was so sweet, sexy, strong and considerate. He was willing to do what was needed to keep Carly happy and to make her feel like she was loved and cared for. He just could not agree with all the secrecy that she harbored with their relationship. Adam has demons of his own, but has worked hard to put his past behind him and make a better life for himself.

Can Adam help Carly see that she is everything that he needs and wants? That she is the one who truly makes him happy? Take the time to pick up the ebook of Breaking the Rules and learn more about Adam and Carly's story. I loved it! I am a big fan of H.B. Heinzer and her great writing style. This book can be read as a stand alone, but I would personally recommend reading Bent first.

Read my full review and many others at http://romancereaders101.blogspot.com

Breaking the Rules wasn't exactly what I expected. I enjoyed it and it was just a sweet, relaxing read. I enjoyed the characters and absolutely fell in love with Adam. Carly got on my nerves through most of the book. I'm not gonna lie. I have issues with heroines that are so damaged they refuse to even try. At times I was thinking, "Geez honey, if you don't want him I'll take him." The writing style is done in Dual POV and I love that in books I read. The sex scenes were steamy but not overly so. The book was classy with just enough drama to keep me turning the page. The only thing I really didn't like was how it ended. To say it ended abruptly would be an understatement. You have this huge thing to happen and you want to know how she will deal with it and then the book just stops. I also would have liked an epilogue. Overall, I was pleased that I bought and read this one.

Carly is 30 and living in NYC. She works behind the scenes in a theater off Broadway. She has long blonde hair and she's pretty. She's mouthy and opinionated. She lives in a run down apartment with an absent roommate and has few friends.

Adam is the younger brother of her best friend Julia. He's 27. He has blue eyes and brown hair with all american good looks. He's not wild and he works hard. He travels a lot for his job. He's also looking to settle down with a wife and kids but doesn't have the time to look.

A week before open curtain at the theater Carly works out everything that can is going wrong. She's dealing with a dark stage. She makes a phone call that will change her life. When the technician arrives she's surprised to realize it's Adam. You can tell these two have an instant connection. He's blatantly flirting with her and she's letting him. They end up spending the weekend together. They begin to realize there is more between them than friendship and flirting. I can't say to much without giving it away but there will be bumps in the road for them.

I give this one 4 stars. The reason behind it being I didn't particularly care for Carly and I wasn't a fan of the ending. Regardless, it was still a great book and deserved 4 stars. I love a book like this. There is just something about 2 people finding each other again when they should have been together all along. If you're into childhood loves and strong, reliable males then I recommend giving this book a try.

Heat Rating: SIMMERING!

Breaking the Rules takes place during the same time as Bent (Back to Brooklyn #1) but from the point of view of Adam and Carly. If you haven't read Bent yet, you can read Breaking the Rules as a stand alone and still be "in the know" and if you have read Bent you will get to see the characters from a different perspective (nothing new happens with Julia and Micah but it was interesting to see their relationship through Adam's POV).

H.B. Heinzer has created an interesting group with Adam, Carly, Micah and Julia, it is a cast of characters that has lots of issues with their past, where they live and what they want out of life. What I liked most about this cast of characters is that they are real people, with average people problems, so they are easy to understand, relate to (no crazy rich CEO or rockstar or Divas here)
and root for as they find their happily every afters.

I really enjoyed Adam's character, he is everything you could ask for in a guy; sweet, smart, caring, considerate and loyal. Adam was willing to do whatever Carly wanted to make her happy, even when it went against what he was comfortable with (don't we all want a guy willing to make sacrifices for us?). Carly ran away from Brooklyn (Wisconsin) as soon as she could and took on New York City's theater district. I liked Carly in the beginning of the story, she was strong, independent and sure of what she wanted out of life, but as the story progressed she was very wishy washy and frustrated me to no end.

While I enjoyed Breaking the Rules I wish I could have had more time with Adam and Carly and less time re-visiting Julia and Micah's story line (at times I felt I was re-reading Bent instead of getting a new story). H.B Heizner does write a very engaging story and even though I wanted the story to go in a different direction, I really enjoyed her writing style. The Back to Brooklyn series is the first time I have read H. B. Heinzer and I will definitely go back and read more of her work, I really like the way her storytelling unfolds and you can easily get wrapped up in the characters' stories.

Breaking the Rules is a good story about how sometimes you have to let go of what you think you want and take a chance trusting others to get what you really need.

Wowwy...wow...wow!! Every time I read one of H.B. Heinzer's books I fall into a deep book depression when I finish. Dang my fast reading eyes, and quick page turning fingers... now I have to find a cure for this hangover!!!

I loved Bent and wouldn't you know that Breaking the Rules picks up with this cast of lovable characters and focuses on two of my faves... Adam and Carly. Carly Turner hated the small town life. She vowed she would move away, and never step foot back on Wisconsin ground. Little did she realize that life in New York was not going to be all it was cracked up to be. Life in the big city is lonely, fast paced, and nobody gives a rats' a$$ about you. She works behind the scenes on the small Broadway plays and it isn't her name in bright lights like she envisioned when she moved there. She slaves for the "big" set designers and lives paycheck to paycheck... not exactly a lifestyle anyone would be jealous of. Malfunctions on a set cause her to call in help to fix the lights and leads Carly on an adventure of love, longing, and a seriously hunky man!

Adam usually doesn't work on field jobs, but running one in New York brings him face to face with a sigh for sore eyes. Adam has had a crush on Carly Turner since he was a gawky teenager, problem is she is his big sister's best friend. Now he has Carly all to himself when he has to fix a light malfunction on her play set. Will he win Carly over since he has grown into his manhood? He is ready to settle down, and get rid of this bachelor life he is living... but is Carly ready and can she see him as a man and not her best friend's bratty little brother. I can tell you, for me I did not see a sign of a little brother in Adam.. HOLY HOTNESS!!!

Drama back in Wisconsin calls for Carly and Adam to return home... can they make it as a couple under the scrutiny of their family and friends? God I hope so!!! Breaking the Rules is by far a solid 5 stars on the knock my socks off scale!!! Way to go once again H/B. Heinzer for making me laugh, cry, and fall in love with your characters!!!

Breaking The Rules By H.B. Heizner was pretty good. I really liked Adam in Bent and was happy to see him and Carly get their own story. Adam was so very protective of Julia in Bent that I couldn't wait to see how he would be in a relationship. He was so sweet, kind, and loving. So easy going someone I would love to be friends with. Carly was an open book for him laying it all out there even though she wasn't sure if it would work out or not. This book had me and I didn't want to put it down.

This story takes place during the exact time frame as Bent which I think was interesting. Reading Bent I would of never known that Carly and Adam had any romantic feelings for one another. Carly is living in New York and has a surprising run in with Adam. He is her best friend Julia's younger brother. They begin spending time together and feelings they have for one another grow incredibly strong. Adam still lives in Wisconsin and Carly is in no way ready to uproot herself for anyone. They begin a long distance relationship. Will it work or will it work until it doesn't anymore?

I liked how this group of friends were so close throughout the book. They are all very supportive of each other. I was happy to see that distance didn't end these friendships. This leads me to believe that there are certain kinds of people who can handle long distance and love. It's not easy but if you want to be with that other person you have no choice but to make it work. You have to be strong, trusting, and spontaneous. This is exactly how I would describe Carly and Adam's relationship. A true love story one where you are rooting for this couple to survive. Love isn't easy but in my experience it's easier if you work together and not against one another. Words to live by in my book.

Take my advice on this one. A light read not full of crazy drama. Actually I would describe it as a very refreshing read. The characters really connected to my heart. I loved reading this book. It made my heart just a little more happier

The second book in the Back To Brooklyn series is the story of Adam and Carly.

Adam Sanders is Julia's (from Bent) younger brother. He is employed with a stage lighting company and often has to travel for work. He is lonely, but feels that he is ready to settle down if he can find that "special someone".

Carly Turner is one of Julia's best friends from childhood. She left Brooklyn, Wisconsin, after high school and is now living it up in New York City. Working behind the scenes in small theaters, she has to call a technician after a lighting malfunction. Who should arrive to fix the stage lights? Adam!

Having only seen each other occasionally over the years, Adam and Carly organise to have dinner and catch up. They both notice that a spark is there between them.

And so, Breaking the Rules follows Adam and Carly's relationship as it progresses and the hurdles they encounter along the way.

I really enjoyed reading Adam and Carly's story! It was great learning how their relationship formed and developed from their points of view. I also enjoyed reading the parts that involved Julia and Micha from Adam and Carly's points of view as well.

H.B. Heinzer writes in a way that makes point of view changeovers flawless. I connected to Adam and Carly's characters and I felt their emotions with them.

If you haven't read Breaking the Rules yet, what are you waiting for? It is a fantastic book! Just make sure that you have read Bent first!

I received an Advance Review Copy from the author in exchange for an honest review.

Loved Bent (book 1) and loved Breaking The Rules even more! Not surprised though, I pretty much heart the heck out of HB Heinzer’s mad writing skills and awesomesauce characters! Got through this book in one day, because honestly, I wanted to know what would happen, and couldn’t put it down! I totally love that Julia and Micah are apart of this book also, seeing how it all started with them in Bent (book 1).

The story is about Carly and Adam, who have pretty much known each other their whole lives, but lost contact for the past few years. They reconnect when Adam comes to New York on business, and the chemistry between these two is instant. Only problem is that Adam is Carly’s close friend Julia’s, little brother. This is where things get heated between the two of them. Adam wants to tell his sister and everyone else about their relationship, but Carly wants to keep it mum for now, thinking it will cause a rift between her and Julia.

Carly has a somewhat broken past, and with it comes trust issues, especially when it involves her heart. She feels by pushing Adam away, she’s protecting herself from further heartache and Adam from having to deal with her commitment issues. On top of that, Adam still lives in their hometown, while Carly lives in New York, making it a long distance struggle. With all of this up against them, can they make it work or give up before it has a chance to start? I say full steam ahead, because together they are HOT!

Rule Breaking Rocks!

I read this book in one sitting, I couldn’t put it down!

This book is about 2 people meeting after years of not seeing each other and realising, very quickly, that they have feelings for each other. The snag – he is her best friends little brother! There are unspoken rules among girls not to date their brothers!

This is the dilemma that Carly and Adam are faced with. He doesn’t really see a problem with it but Carly does. When Adam goes to Carly’s workplace to do a job, they “click” immediately.

Carly has had a bad experience with her heart and doesn’t want to give it very freely. Adam lives back in their home town and Carly lives in New York, so they have the whole long distance relationship to work through as well.

There is a secondary plot playing out in the background which is very interesting and make this romance story not so “typical”.

HB Heinzer’s style of writing is very descriptive; I understand the talk about how the theatre works because it was explained so well. Heinzer is able to build the reader up to a crescendo when necessary for the reader to get excited about what was going to happen next.

I read this book as a stand alone and felt that I should have read the first book in the series, Bent, first. This was purely so that I could understand the secondary plot which was playing out in the background.

I would give this book 5 stars and I will definitely be reading other books by HB Heinzer.

Enjoy!

i guess this would be around a 3.5-4 /5 stars can't decide.

not much to say, writing this really fast and quick. Good storyline. Really sweet hero that is NOT player, aww he was just so cute.

Carly did get a tad bit annoying. with her wanting to keep their relationship a secret, was reasonable, but at the same time stupid.

main complaint though is the ending.... So Carly's mom left her when she was young, and at the end of the story 25 years after her mom left, she gets a letter from her mom saying that Carly has 2 younger half sisters and even if Carly doesn't forgive her she'll understand. My problem is that it just ended there.

I wanted to know what happened!! It's really sad to think about that her mother left one daughter and had 2 more without even claiming the old one. That was really selfish to me REALLY SELFISH. And I don't even know how Carly will react to that because the book ended ENDED. I don't think this story will continue anyways, I think it's a stand alone.

It just ended with Carly saying to Adam "will you come meet her with me"

Adam basically says "of course, I'll do anything for you" <-- ok not the exact words, but the point gets through.

--the end-- I wanted her to have a showdown with her mom, asking her why she basically dumped her with her grandma and never came back. UGGGGHHHHH these feels.

*note this frustration may come from me just finishing a 7 page essay, and I have all this pent up feels right now.

Where does one start with this book? I liked it better than Bent, can you believe that? Sometimes, many times, when a book in a series changes characters over the same time frame as the book before it, something gets lost along the way. This is not the case in this book. Not only did it tell a story that could almost be a stand alone book, but it has it’s own storyline instead of mirroring the previous book’s storyline. Sure, there are parts of the previous book in it, there has to be. This book stands on its own two covers. (Hehe I couldn’t pass up the opportunity for the corny play on words.)
At first, I wasn’t so sure if I was going to like Carly and Adam’s story. But, I indeed, really liked it. Carly’s fears can be felt deep down. You won’t have a problem begging for her to just wake up, suck it up, and be happy. As I read the book, I kept trying to see if I could remember certain parts from Bent to see if I could have foreshadowed the things that were going on at certain times. No such luck! There was a point in Bent, I had thought that Adam and Carly were seeing each other. The parts I thought that were confirmed in this book.
I loved the connection these two shared. There couldn’t have been a better way to tell their story. I actually found myself a little giddy over these two! Hands down a must read book!

The storyline of Breaking The Rules runs parallel to Bent (Julia and Micah's story), and it is good to get more of the background of their story and relationship.

Carly and Julia were best friends in highschool, and were the two girls in their class who couldn't wait to leave small town Wisconsin for bigger and better things. Adam is Julia's annoying younger brother who has always had a thing for Carly.

A chance encounter brings them together, and from their friendship grows something stronger than either of them ever thought.

What I like about HB Heinzer's characters is that they are not perfect, they have their flaws. Carly is damaged, thinks she is not enough for Adam. Adam is not the "alpha" that we get in so many other books these days - not saying he isn't hot - he is - but he is not the super perfect guy. He has is kookier side (turning up dressed to impress, wearing green Chucks!)

I laughed, I teared up, I got frustrated beyond all belief (hello, these people are in their 30's, why were they so worried about another 30 year old's feelings when it was coming between them grr grr!!)

Can Carly and Adam overcome the hurdles and have their HEA?

You will have to read it to find out!!!

I enjoyed this more than I did Bent, and I look forward to more in the Back to Brooklyn series

Breaking the Rules (Back to Brooklyn #2)
by H.B. Heinzer

Carly Turner left her home town in Wisconsin and now stays in New York and works behind the scenes for a small theatre company. When she has to call someone to come fix the lighting at the theatre its her best friends little brother Adam Sanders that turns up to do the job. Adam has always had a crush on Carly after meeting her again they have an instant chemistry and start dating but Carly doesn't want to tell Julia about dating her brother not sure what her reaction will be to it.
This is book 2 in the series and I have never read book 1 and I found that I managed to read as a stand alone but also feel like I was maybe missing more of the characters back story and feel I might have benefited from reading book 1 before book 2. However I really enjoyed this book I really liked the characters but did at one point want to slap Carly because of her attitude about keeping things a secret.

Adam is a great character and as a reader I felt attracted to him. This is a well written, sweet and so romantic story with plenty of hot sex!
I would love to read more from this series, I found that I had became very fond of all the characters and would like to see where their stories lead.

Thank you to HB Heinzer for providing me with an ARC of Breaking the rules in exchange for my honest opinion.

Since Bent by HB Heinzer was the entire reason I started reading Romance Novels, I desperately awaited the release of the follow-up Breaking the Rules. HB Heinzer was able to weave the story of Carly and Adam so that it fell seamlessly with the characters in Bent. There were still glimpses of Julia and Micah, which I was happy about because I fell in love with Micah’s character in Bent.

I have to say I think I like Adam as a character more than Micah. Honestly, he drives a ’66 Chevelle SS and wears Converse? Yep, I may just love Adam.

Breaking the Rules follows the love story of Adam and Carly and while not as intense as Bent (In My Opinion), it is a very well written story. The story takes place in NYC and Brooklyn, Carly is working in NYC and Adam still lives in the town where they grew up. I can see the images of NYC through the eyes of Carly and feel the love between Carly and Adam. HB Heinzer creates characters that are easy to fall in love with and who I want to see succeed.

The hot, steamy love scenes are delicious and I’ll be keeping an eye out for her next book!

Adam and Carly’s story runs almost exactly parallel to Julia and Micah’s in Bent. It fills in some information from Bent in Carly and Adam’s POV but mainly tells their own story. They grew up together but now Adam travels a lot for his job and Carly lives in New York. They reconnect by chance and sparks fly instantly.

Carly has a hard time with commitment and abandonment but is driven to make something of herself in her career and is loyal to her friends. Adam is sexy as hell, hard working, caring, and protective. He’s had a crush on Carly since they were kids but never acted on it because his sister Julia is one of Carly’s best friends.

I really liked the dynamics between the characters and and the story line that follows Adam and Carly. And what would a good romance be without some steamy sex scenes? Yeah, there’s plenty of those along with a little drama and a great romance.

This was a great story about learning to love and realizing that compromise doesn’t mean sacrifice. Both of the characters grow a lot throughout the story and I can’t wait to see what happens in the next book.

I read this book right after reading Bent. I strongly suggest if you have read Bent, you read it again before reading this. It makes much more sense ;0) . I really liked this book. I liked that we got to see the story of Micah and Jules, but from a different point of view. But then we also had the story of Carly and Adam. I did realize when reading this that I had the same type of reaction to Carly that I had to Jules. I wanted to slap them both. No joke.. I just wanted to scream at them to get their crap together. I didn’t want Carly to lose Adam, but I almost sure that was what was going to happen. He was trying so hard, and he was so perfect- they were so perfect. I get it, people have problems. Most people do, but come on chick- get your crap together!! GAH! Anyway. I love HB’s style, the way she sucks you into the story and you don’t want out until you know how it’s gonna end. I really did like the epilogue, the tease she gives us. I also really like that it was like Carly grew up in a way through the story. Adam was always so resolute in what he needed and wanted, and we just had to wait for Carly to get there. It’s worth the wait. I give this book 3.5 hearts!

This story is the second in the Back to Brooklyn series. When I began the book I was totally expecting to read more about Julia and Micah and eventually I did but this story is about Carly and Adam. Carly is Julia’s best friend and Adam is her brother. Their relationship is not without its problems…..I n the beginning the biggest is whether or not to tell Julia about their relationship. I really felt like Carly and Adam were made for each other, Adam is really the all American guy who works hard but when it comes to Carly loves harder. Carly had a really tough upbringing which honestly has left her with a guarded heart, and unfortunately she can’t open up to Adam and explain why she feels like she does. Adam quickly becomes frustrated and doesn’t understand why she won't fully commit and let him in…..add this to a long distance relationship which is already hard enough without the insecurities….will they actually make it? Better read the book and find out!!

I whole heartedly give this book 5 stars, I can honestly say I wish I had a love like Carly and Adam!

I have not read Bent yet, but totally need too! You can read Breaking The Rules as a standalone but I really want to read Juile and Micha’s story too! This was a fast read for me which I like!

Carly and Adam….SIGH…such a sweet story, they for sure have their issues though. Adam’s job causes him to travel a lot and Carly is hell bent on staying in New York and NOT going back to her home town. Meanwhile they both are so in love with each other. They are scared to tell Julie (adams sister) because she is dealing with her own crazy drama from Micha (which I need to read about in Bent!). That is only a few of the hurdles they have, cause long distance isn’t hard enough?! The good thing is there is a HEA and hopefully we will have a book three soon?? :)

WOW H.B.Heinzer, you have gone and stole my heart again with your writing and characters!! I love when an author can write a story real to life, have you feeling the characters emotions and cheering for them to get through their difficult times!

This beautiful story of Adam and Carly picks up (kind of) where Bent left off. Yet it could be read as a stand alone.

This story is one that will take you on the journey of not only love, but also facing the fear of abandonment. There were times throughout the story that I was like aww, come on guys, quit screwing this up for crying out loud and TALK to each other. And there were times I wanted to shake Adam because he was not being sensitive to her insecurities. I wanted to tell her to wake up and see what a good man he is and that he really was trying to understand her.

The story line flows well and it’s a very sweet story that makes you want to hang around a little longer to watch the next stage of Adam and Carly’s lives unfold.

Carly and Adam have known each other their whole lives, he's her best friends brother. But they run into each other when he shows up in New York to repair a light at the theatre that she works at. They end up hanging out and enjoying each others company. Carly and Adam start a relationship but hide it from everyone back home. Things are strained between the two for many different reasons.

HB Heinzer does a great job of telling this story even though between chapters, it may jump several days, weeks or months. This is the first book that I have read by this author and I had no idea what to expect but I was not disappointed. Heinzer has a sense of writing that is very unique. I thought that I would be completely lost since this is supposed to be book 2 in the series but I felt like I didn't really need to read book 1. I know that I will read it now that I've gotten a taste of the story and the sense of writing but it definitely won't hurt to skip it. A great book with a great cliffhanger ending; anxiously waiting to find out what comes next for Adam and Carly.
