Though his ways are hard and steep.
And when his wings enfold you, yield to him,
Though the sword hidden among his pinions may wound you.
And when he speaks to you, believe in him,
Though his voice may shatter your dreams as the north wind lays waste the garden. ~From The Prophet by Kahlil Gibran

This is definitely the best book in the series- more of a plot and KA learned not to use so many "I Love You's." But...Hmm... to be honest I feel a little conflicted. It was good- I loved it when I was reading it, but when I sit down to rethink about certain situations in the book... I just feel like it all could have been avoided, if the H and h just sat down for a real heart to heart where they don't blow up at one another. The plot drug out for a while...Not gonna lie either- Ryan pissed me the F**K off. majorly.
* apparently by the length of this review, I was more pissed off than I knew*
The summary...
Ryan is working on his residency, Julia is working at Vogue. Both are working their butts off, but strive to make time for each other. Problem is, things keep popping up so their times together keep getting rescheduled or called off.
Enter antagonist- Jane. Jane is a young, attractive, nurse who works with Ryan, and slowly but surely you can tell she has the hots for him. One day while working together, a gang member comes in with a gun shot wound. While working to save his life, rival gang members barge into the ER room and demand they stop working on him and let him die by threatening them with a gun and knife. Jane and Ryan try to talk them out of it, but during a scuffle, Jane steps in front of Ryan getting stabbed, and ends up stabbed herself. (Ryan get a stab wound in his shoulder). Jane's guts are ripped open, and she ends up needing a hysterectomy.
Ryan feeling guilty because Jane essentialy saved his life, goes to visit Jane in the hospital. Jane becomes even more attached to Ryan and uses her saving his life, as way to finagle her way into being "friends." (Her version of friends is what I like to call being a stalker, but to each their own right?) Friends for Jane means paging and calling Ryan all hours of the day, giving him slight touches and caresses, showing up at his and Jane's apartment unannounced, manipulating him for dinner invitations... and then she gets into the really crazy stuff by
Obviously, this"friendship" starts to give Julia and Ryan problems. Ryan feels indebted to her for saving his life, and feels bad because she apparently has no on else to talk to. He becomes almost completely available to Jane, talking to her whenever she needs "someone to listen." Julia begins to feel lonely, and that Ryan "forgot to remember her." Jane continually interrupts all of their special plans to spend time together, and this puts a major strain on Julia's relationship with Ryan, as they barely have time to see each other as it is. They begin to argue more, and Julia comes clean to Ryan that she doesn't want to be jealous, but she is. Julia and Ryan begin to fight all the time about Jane. They never talk about the root of the problem, instead Ryan just has sex with Julia whenever they have spare time. He feels like sex is their connection time, and that during those moments Julia can tell how much he loves her. He also feels like if Julia only trusted him, none of their problems would be happening. However, Julia feels like she has lost her "best friend" because their connection as friends is gone- they don't spend time together, they don't talk, they don't go on dates. All they do is argue and have sex- and in her view, it's not Ryan she doesn't trust, it's Jane. On top of all this they are trying for a baby- can anyone say STUPID?
Well, you can probably predict this is a recipe for disaster. After a monumental fight,
Things I liked:
- Julia was strong and giving (for the most part). Even when Jane was starting to encroach on her personal time with Ryan, she didn't go psycho woman in the beginning, but still tried to be patient and understanding, thinking that Jane really did need some help. But, when push came to shove though, Julia knew that that bitch was crazy, and tried to tell Ryan. I appreciate that she wasn't going to accept this friendship, and even though the decision was rash, I think it was smart of her to be strong enough to stand up for herself and give them space. She went about it the wrong way, but I like that she wasn't going to be a doormat forever, and let her husband choose a "friendship," over her.
- Epilogue was cute-ish- I definitely wouldn't want my husband , but it fit for Ryan and Jane because they are crazy obsessive about each other.
- The overall storyline was good. I think that this is something that is all too common in the workplace today, and wives need to learn how to communicate to their husbands what is ok and what is not okay regarding their "friendships" with other women. Some things are just NOT acceptable, and I like this this book addressed this issue.
Things I didn't like so much:
- Ryan was an idiot throughout the whole "Jane" situation. To me, I don't care whether or not nothing inappropriate was happening on his end, but the fact that the situation was upsetting his wife- the woman he claimed to love above all else- should have been enough for Ryan not to talk to her or take her calls. Julia shouldn't have to explain every little thing that Jane did to her to make uncomfortable to ensure that Ryan avoided her- in a marriage and partnership it should be as simple as, "Ryan, I don't feel comfortable about this Jane woman. Something is off about her, and while I know nothing is going on, but I would rather you not answer her phone calls or be friends with her. Please only deal with her in a doctor/nurse relationship." and Ryan should respond, "You know I would never cheat on you or do something that jeopardizes our relationship, so if means this much to you, then I will stop being friends with her." There- problem solved. But Nope, Ryan who supposedly went to Harvard for goodness sakes, continues to entertain Jane with his "friendship." I mean she kissed you Ryan, she shows up announced to your apartment, she calls you all hours of the day, she bought you $400 doctor shoes for Christmas- WTF - you even admitted you knew she probably had a crush on you. WHY WOULD YOU STILL TRY TO BE FRIENDS WITH SOMEONE WHO OBVIOUSLY LIKES YOU BUT DO NOTHING TO DISCOURAGE HER? She is upsetting your wife you idiot- that should be enough of a reason for you to leave it be.
- The plot was drug out, and there were lots of little loose ends that were not tied up.
- Jane was stalker crazy- based on all of things she did( )I expected her to not give up at trying to have a relationship with Ryan. Are we suppose to believe that she just dropped off the face of the earth and became "Sane Jane" after all she did? I think that is quite a bit farfetched, and I would like to have seen a cleaner resolution regarding her- Ryan should have filed sexual harassment or something because that bitch was crazy.
