Though I've been published in Regency Romance under the pseudonym Valerie King--and yes one of my Regency Novellas features a vampire--one day I woke up knowing I had to create my own contemporary world of the warrior vampire.
For some mystical, magical reason, early in the process, my vampires appeared with enormous beautiful wings and it has been the most amazing experience to include flight in my novels, in both battle scenes and scenes involving spectacle. My special vampire world, published by St. Martin's Press, is introduced in the first book called, ASCENSION (12-28-2010). The second book, BURNING SKIES (May of 2011), opens up the world a little bit more. And even as I write this, I'm on the final draft of my third novel, WINGS OF FIRE (September of 2011). What a thrill it has been to live with my ascended vampires through the creation of this extraordinary, multi-dimensional world!

Bound in Blood
Adrien has been hanging in chains in the Himalayas for more than a year and his captors gave him just enough blood so that he could heal after every beating. One night he had a vision of a beautiful woman in a sparkling gown, and hours later that woman stood before him in different clothes.
Lily Haven had lost her family to vampires, and was given a chance to use this one to help her to get her son back using chains that would bind him to her. He was a very sexy and powerful vampire that even though she hated his kind, found herself with a powerful attraction to him.
They would make their way around the world looking for a thing that she could trade for her son. As she explored the world of vampires she found herself growing closer to Adrien and having a different perception of his race.
This was a unique and new bent to vampire lore that was both interesting and engrossing. The story is hard to step away from and is very well written. Not that I have anything against sexy scenes, but every time the story was on a roll they need to stop and couple… maybe just a little too often. I did enjoy this story and I see there are two more in the series, but I think I will read something else in between. This was a five star spicy story with no serious triggers, and the violence was mostly fast and softened to keep the story from being too uncomfortable.

It took me foreeeeveeeer to finish up with this book. And I don't know why, TBH... I mean the blurb was exactly up my alley, the sample was tempting as hell - the abused, chained, powerful vampire soldier and a woman binding and controlling him through a blood-chain? What's there not to love?
But, the further in I went the less I liked the story. It was insta-everything. The whole plot took only 3 days (nights mostly) and I felt as though it was filled to the brim with only: superquick flying in all directions + fighting everywhere + hot and rough sex/blood-giving scenes in between...
Lily and Adrien were quite OK. Lily was brave and courageous, and Adrien was all hunky and strong. And their human/vampire team worked well together, but that was it. It all felt just OK.
I very rarely venture into MF and now I know I really shouldn't because MF books don't bring me the joy and passion I can find in my MM reads...
Recommended if you like MF with a lot of (hot) action and vampire/human pairings.

This book is the most wounded book I've ever read in paranormal romance. Never I've encountered reading hero and heroine who are both damaged souls. Like, seriously utterly damned tortured souls.
What I liked
Connection between Adrien and Lily. They are perfect together. Besides, I liked Adrien because he has soft spot although he's uber lethal. I liked Lily too because she's a strong-willed and very passionate woman.
I liked the new set of vampire-human world in this book. Although it isn't much different from any other vampire story, it was interesting to learn about it.
A lot of fight in this book and it was thrilling experience. The mystery was intriguing to discover!
What I disliked
The timeline didn't make sense to me because so many things happened in this book and it took only within three nights. I get that vampires are all about speed or altered flight in this case but still.
Instant love. They professed love to each other after three nights of knowing each other. Hmmmmm
I was so angry how the things ended. After all the fuss that happened for almost in the entire book, it got unsatisfactory ending!

Anyway, I will continue with this series because this book has so many unanswered puzzles that I'm looking forward to find out in next installments.

I really enjoyed this story. I liked Ms. Roane's take on vampires.
Her characters where believable, likeable and I wanted to know them better.
I liked the fact that the world building was spot on, not overdone and boring.
I need fast paced, action packed stories and this definitely fill the bill for me.
I fell for Adrien, for his pain, his suffering and the hatred in his heart was easy to accept. As was his fierceness and his willingness to work with Lily.
Lily was smart and understanding of her plight and came to terms with the things she and Adrien had to do to secure her son. No dragging shit out in this book.
Lily is being blackmailed to find the weapon that could destroy all vampire kind. Adrien is helping her but of course his motives are different. The bad guys are BAD and the good guys are yummy...
Really enjoyed this book and I'm looking for Lucien's story next.
I give this book two thumbs up...

Fantastic. So enthralling I didn't even peak ahead to see what would happen in the chapters to come.
Awesome H and h. Liked them both on their own merits and together they were smoking hot.
The vampire bad guys were intriguing and while the surprise connection of one to the H wasn't really shocking, it still worked.
Lots of other characters that hinted at future tales for the series including what is clearly C and L for book 2 which I have already flagged to buy.
Writing style is a bit blunt - the reader is forced to get right to things, and some conversations are skipped - this style works for me.
The sex...wow, unlike other stories where the h dominates the H without a real plot point, this really worked here. In fact, the relationship of A and L reminded me a bit of V and J from BDB/Ward.
This series...if it continues in this manner...has the potential to be in the Ward and LotU/Gena land of goodness. If not, this tale still is that good. Nice surprise.

As the story opens, we find Adrien an Ancestral vampire, one of the strongest of his kind to ever exist, bound and chained in a cave high in the Himalayan mountains. He is not alone. Two of his brothers are also prisoners and are held close to him. Along comes Lily, a human, on a mission to get her son back from a ruthless vampire named Daniel. She enlists Adrien to help her. Together they embark upon a journey fraught with danger, as they fight the desire and lust that pulls them closer. I found this to be a very enjoyable read. Adrien is not your typical vampire and Lily is quite courageous. Adrien has an ability that took me by surprise. One of several as a matter of fact, that I have yet to find in another vampire story. Overall, this was a very interesting take on the Vampire Mythos and I highly recommend this book.

A new vampire world to explore. Adrien and Lilly are both broken souls lost in their own tortured minds of things done to them by others and filled with hate and rage. Lilly binds Adrien to her and demands that he help her find a weapon, and so it begins. They begin to trust each other and as they trust begin to let go of the hate and rage and it is replaced with hope and love. First book in the series with a lot of open questions about this world which I am sure will begin to be answered in the next story. I enjoyed the strength that both the hero and heroine had and the determination. A lot of similarities to the ascension characters. All in all a goo d first book that will have me waiting to read the next one to see what Claire and Lucien's story will be.

A fabulous new world, full of vampires, chains, lust, danger and love! Caris does it again!!!
In this first installment of the Men in Chains series, she introduces us to the world of the Ancestral Vampire. Immortal and powerful beyond imagination, Ancestrals live, secretly, in the many cave systems around the world. But their leadership has been corrupted by Daniel, a very old, powerful and sadistic vampire, and trafficking of human drugs and human sex slaves is on the rise.
Enter our hero Adrien, a beautiful 400 year old vampire with a painful past and bitterness towards humans. Absolutely gorgeous, as any good hero is, Adrien's got some issues stemming from his upbringing and a pretty big hostility towards humans. But he's powerful and kind and believable!
Lily is on this mission to save something from her past that was taken from her 2 years before when vampires killed her family. But of course she can't tell Adrien. I like this chick. She's no nonsense and keeps to her mission regardless if she's chained, literally to a hot stud muffin of a vampire.
I love that the journey they take together for the mission is actually the journey that they have to take for themselves and for each other. There are road bumps and obstacles that have to be dealt with but each of them has to deal with some of their own issues in order to get to the next stop. A hallmark of Caris's novels is the limits that the leads have set upon themselves with history or experience and how fate has led them to a point where they have to deal with those limits. They can't go forward because they are scared of something. Why are they scared? And Is it worth it? It's these elements that make this book and Caris's others so satisfying for me.
There is a lot of travel in this book. We jump all over the globe and see some pretty interesting settings with another of Caris's great ideas, Altered Flight! These vampires can fly through solid objects like buildings and mountains!
The heat level in this book is pretty high and I was pleased with some of the creative directions she went in in the bedroom. Hot, hard, intense and rough, Caris always keeps sex to a high class level that I appreciate in the romance genre.
The only thing I could wish for in this book was that it was longer and we had more time to spend with Adrien and Lily.
I give this book 5 stars because I could read it without stopping as in I MUST turn the page, even if it makes me late for work. And I will re-read it again in the future.
And I cannot wait till the release of the next in the series Chains of Darkness Coming in April 2014!

I originally saw this series on NetGalley and was immediately interested. I haven’t read a vampire book like this and it was very exhilarating. Caris Roane has a fantastic writing style and her characters are complicated, causing you to read on and discover their secrets. I loved this book, though I wasn’t completely addicted; but in saying that I definitely had to find out what happened to Adrien and Lily.
Adrien and his brothers have been captured and tortured for the past year. They are bound in chains and deprived of blood in the Himalaya’s. Adrien felt her presence and has visions of a beautiful woman, but who is she and why does he feel a connection?
Lily Haven is a human and will be bound to Adrien. Two years ago, Lily’s life fell apart. Her neighbourhood was attacked by a swarm of vampires and her family taken from her. For two years she believed her son was dead with her husband and daughter, but then Harris Kiernan entered her life and made a bargain. Lily is a tracker and being bound to Adrien will increase her power allowing them to find the extinction weapon.
Lily didn’t even know that vampires existed and now she is to be bound to one. Frightened beyond belief, Lily is determined to find this weapon and get her son back quickly. Walking into the dungeon, Lily is horrified by what she sees. Adrien is released, cleaned up, bound and they head to Paris. Adrien’s first need is blood and with the blood he needs a coupling. Lily has to decide if she will offer her blood and body, through the chains she can feel his pain and his needs.

My Review:
Flat out...I bought this book because of that cover. Luckily, the story is good too. Really creative. Adrien and his two half brothers have spent the last 8 months chained and tortured. He's offered a way out by binding himself to Lily so that they can search for a weapon. He does NOT like humans and thinks that she's doing this entirely out of greed.
Lily HATES vampires. They killed her entire family...or so she thought. Now she's found out that her son Josh is alive and she has the power to save him. She only has to bind herself to Adrien and search for this weapon. She knows it won't be easy, but will do anything to save her child. Anything.
This book starts off incredibly quickly with a ton of action and suspense and really doesn't let up throughout the entire story. It also gets really smexy really fast and I loved that. There's a connection between Lily and Adrien that goes beyond their blood bond and it made the story and romance really intense. I love stories where there's something a bit more mystical/deeper to the romance than just normal lust and this book had it.
It's a creative world and there are two other brothers still chained and tortured who need to be freed. There's also an insane bad guy still to catch so there are definitely more smexy, hot times to come and I'm looking forward to the next book. Surprisingly good. 3.5 Stars it would have earned 4 Stars if there was this one issue but I will get to that later.
Lily Haven lost her family (her husband, her daughter and her son) or at least she thought she did. 2 years after the raid in her village she finds out that one of them survived (won't say which one, don't want to spoil it) The condition of getting that person back is to bind herself to a vampire with neck chains.
Adrien, Lucian and Marcus have been held by the monster Daniel in the Himalayas for a year now and day in day out they have been tortured. Before Adrien meets Lily he has a vision of her. Lily chooses Adrien and the fun begins.
The world created is wonderful the characters and their development in the book as well. I wasn't too sure to begin with but this book really grew on me. The steamy scenes added to it but they can have a lot of sex maybe it's because he is vampire. So the one thing that got me going and why it didn't get the half star so that it could have been 4 stars is that a.) the chains were why they couldn't get enough of one another (Ah Duh it's cause you have feelings for one another) and b.) that they have such a hatred to one another and the prejudice.
Lily Haven lost her family (her husband, her daughter and her son) or at least she thought she did. 2 years after the raid in her village she finds out that one of them survived (won't say which one, don't want to spoil it) The condition of getting that person back is to bind herself to a vampire with neck chains.
Adrien, Lucian and Marcus have been held by the monster Daniel in the Himalayas for a year now and day in day out they have been tortured. Before Adrien meets Lily he has a vision of her. Lily chooses Adrien and the fun begins.
The world created is wonderful the characters and their development in the book as well. I wasn't too sure to begin with but this book really grew on me. The steamy scenes added to it but they can have a lot of sex maybe it's because he is vampire. So the one thing that got me going and why it didn't get the half star so that it could have been 4 stars is that a.) the chains were why they couldn't get enough of one another (Ah Duh it's cause you have feelings for one another) and b.) that they have such a hatred to one another and the prejudice.

Adrien and his half-brothers are vampires who are strong members of their vampire community. They are also very strong vampires. Their abusive father kept them imprisoned but now a human is keeping them in chains. They are too much of a threat to allow them their freedom, so the brothers are being held in a cave in the Himalayas. But Adrien's imprisonment has another reason. With his power, he can find the one weapon that is capable of destroying all vampires and eliminating the threat from humanity. Adrien's power can be channeled through a locator and, if the conditions are just right, that locator can help the bad guys - Kiernan and Briggs - dominate the world and end an entire powerful race. Given that Briggs is also Adrien's father, the tension is high in this battle vs. good and evil.

Boring and gloomy. Feels repetitive and padded already, with double- and even triple-repeats— and I only got 50 pages into it. Middling world-building and confusing/spotty background info. Shenanigans abound. For example: hero drops trou to get a rise out of heroine (because he’s a 6 year old), and she's like, well I'm not dead, but he shouldn't read too much into it because to her he’s just “a slab of meat, nothing more.”
Him: “For her to reduce him to something found in a slaughterhouse repulsed him. She had no soul, this woman, bent on using him for her own purposes…”
Well he never! He is quite offended!!
Him, like an hour earlier: “He’d been without sex for a year, and without a decent draught of blood. The woman [h] would serve his needs just fine.”
Aaaanyway. Bailed ASAP right before the first sex scene, because the whole we-hate-and-distrust-each-other-to-a-quasiracist-degree-but-we-“have”-to fuck-(except-we-totally-don’t) thing is TOTAL NONSENSE and also really fucking squicked me out so just no.
DNF.

Rate 4.5 stars - A fantastic start to a new series, the characters of Lily and Adrien and their love story was developed beautifully. The showcasing of their increasing individual strengths as they made their decisions for their future was a wonderful read and gave the reader a great insight to the developing storyline. This will become a very intriguing series as each Brother as well as some of the other interesting character’s stories are written. Definitely looking forward to the future episodes of this series.

I loved this book, and the premise of the characters in both physical and emotional chains. It was a great first book, with a story of smoldering love and then true heat. It took me away, and the trip was wonderful !
Of course all that happened happened over a few days time, and although I often expect that in this genre, I think in this case the two of them being together over the passage of more time would have worked better.
All in all this was great fun. I'm looking forward to the next installment.

I was given a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.
I don't know why, but I put off reading this one for quite a while. Once I started, I quickly realized that I had only made myself miss a great story. This book had a huge case of insta-love, but the author's explaination made it where I could see it as plausible. I really liked Adrien and Lilly as characters and can't wait to explore the other brothers.

Really good story, a few surprising twists, although predictable for the most part. Nice character development and unusual story line. There were quite a few place where I'm thinking, "geez, why doesn't she just…?" I understand furthering the storyline and trying to build suspense, but some of these efforts fell short and appeared to make the female protagonist, Lily seem silly. Writing style was great, so I would read more from this author.

I have to admit I'm kind of tired of the "vampire" genre, but honestly the cover caught eye too much to let this one slide by. Then the story was so hot, I couldn't put it down. Oy! I'm glad they love me at my fav Subway, cause I would have thrown me out. Between the outbursts of laughter and the "Oh My Hotness" I was a hot noisy mess. #AwesomeRead

Original and sexy vammire story i liked how this story developped, how both Adrian and Lily were forced into the situation but came out so much stronger together.
My only problem maybe is that everything went a bit too fast. By the end of the book, we are just 3 days later than at the beginning and with so much happening... It is hard to feel like it is somehow possible.

The idea for this book was great but the actual story was awful. The way everything was referenced during sex (her well? kissing her low") was like it was written by a prudish aunt and let me just say that was a total mood killer. Also Lilys constant crying annoyed me so much I started hoping she would meet a rather unfortunate end! x

I thought this was a pretty good book. It was slow at times and some of the phrasing that was used made me do a little head scratching. altogether a good start to a new series.
