A botched missing person’s case.

A nervous mob boss.

Lt. Jake Carrington’s gut tells him Phil Lucci is being cagey—with good reason. Jake can see this case has been mishandled from the beginning. Sloppy police work? Or does Lucci's hand reach as far as the WPD? It’s Jake’s job to find the answers.

Then Jake meets Kyra Russell, a woman with an unusual job—she runs the local crematory. Despite the heated attraction between them, Jake becomes more and more suspicious of Kyra. Her gambling problem has already cost her a marriage and custody of her son. More than that, she also happens to be friends with Phil Lucci. Kyra assures Jake that it's just coincidence, but Jake's experience and his instincts warn him not to believe in chance. Can Kyra be burning bodies for the mob? If she is, what will Jake do about it?

Wow! If you thought the first one was good, this one is way better. Yup, I think this novel is even better than the first. The crimes, the mob, all the players involved, and of course, Jake and his love life - this has it all. The author has weaved a terrific story that captures your attention the moment you start reading. Even better is the diverse cast of characters she writes about that really makes the book shine.

Jake is an intriguing character with all his flaws and complications. Don't get me wrong - I love his character but I think he has a lot of issues. He's so great at his job, but his love life is a mess. I don't think he knows what true love is and it's evident as he goes back forth with his feelings for two women. He may be tops at his job but it's his attitude towards women that bothers me. He wonders why, as a detective, he didn't see what was going on with Kyra. Perhaps if he stopped being selfish and using sex to base a relationship on, he might have been able to. I also don't understand how he can cry for Kyra one minute, go on a drinking binge for a week, and then take Mia to bed telling her he loves her. Am I alone on this one? In fact, I think he's a user of women which makes sense as he's described as a "player." I was really routing for Kyra. My heart actually went out to her. I wasn't surprised when she took her life. It's just too bad that Jake didn't understand it better. Or am I mistaken? The more I think about it, Jake comes across as almost chick-like when it comes to his love life. I mean he still hasn't accepted Sophia's apology even though he's known her for 17 years and they're best friends; not to mention her mistake was so tiny. He acts like she betrayed him. Give me a break! Buddy, we all make mistakes. Suck it up and call her. By the way, the reason for Jake and Mia's breakup in the first novel was ridiculous. I do have to say that my opinion about Mia took a nosedive in this round. So strong and independent she is when we first meet her, only to act like a whiny, spoiled brat (and a pain in the ass) later.

In the end, not only is this a terrific novel deserving of the five stars I gave it, I highly recommend it.

I look forward to reading the next book in the series. It should be interesting to see the direction their relationship takes.

*I'd love to hear if others agree or disagree about my opinions on Jake and Mia.

Billed as a Jake Carrington mystery, there’s more romance and drama than mystery in this tale of a cop who find himself suspecting his current girlfriend of connections to the mob. The girlfriend’s casino addiction may have a lot to do with her strange choices. And her need to stay in touch with her son fuels bad decisions that can surely only drive her further to despair. But, just for a while, life looks good. She’s back on her feet. Her addictions are almost conquered. And the boyfriend’s great.

Of course, there’s still the estranged spouse and in-laws to deal with, and the fact that she really mustn’t let the cop know what’s going on, and the “other guy.” And the fact that Jake Carrington already has a girlfriend who doesn’t seem to want to stay estranged.

When casual relationships turns serious, and casual crime turns deadly, the mystery might be a missing person or an apparent suicide. But the relationships drive this tale, with agonies of indecision, cruel ironies, and pleasingly complex characters. Solutions are sometimes easier than I’d expect as the story twists and turns, but I’d certainly read more of Jake Carrington after enjoying this novel.

Having once conjugated complex Latin phrases with dedication and interest, Airmid, Lady of Speed Reading, recognizes in Burn in Hell, a wonderfully enigmatic and pleasingly difficult puzzle to be opened with anticipation and devoured with delight. The story is at once interesting and engaging, alike in many ways to the healing lore Airmid sought to learn from her father. We first meet lovely, red-haired Kyra Russell, funeral director by day, gambler by night. The addiction of gambling holds Kyra like the milky-white latex that sticks fingers together as one gathers dandelion root. Kyra could pull away easily if she were determined, but she chooses to remain, and even binds herself further by accepting an offer from mob boss, Phil Lucci, to cremate the bodies of his hits. Kyra's rationale for choosing this fate rests on her belief that her gambling debts will be erased and she will receive large amounts of cash with which to win back custody of her son, Trevor, from her vindictive ex-husband, Tom. On this same fate-filled day, Kyra first meets Jake Carrington, luscious local man-of-law and defender of vulnerable females, who is emotionally raw from recent abandonment by his fiancée, Mia.

Like the vines of the Partridge Berry which intertwine as they spread over the ground, Kyra and Jake cling to one another in their duress and grief, each entering the relationship with uncommitted intentions that fail as they find in one another the light and hope that comes from the promise of healing emotional wounds. However, like an herbal remedy prepared by the untruthful or unwise, Jake and Kyra's relationship is destined to prove deadly as their enemies conspire against them. The climax of the story builds to an intense ending that is logical, unpredictable and yet disturbing as a cruel justice is served to the stubborn Kyra, and Jake is helpless to protect her from her chosen fate.

Airmid, having lost her favorite brother, Miach, to her father's anger understands the aching emptiness that Jake feels for his long-ago murdered sister. Having spent a year and a day mourning over Miach's burial place to no avail, Airmid sincerely wishes for Jake's sake that he could have found a way to reach Kyra before it was too late. As the story progresses we are also introduced to the mysterious Mia. Airmid wonders what Jake saw in the maddeningly controlling and acerbic woman, who, after a mystifying argument with Jake two months prior, held herself back from contact, as if Jake resided in a patch of stinging nettles and she had no wish to traverse them and endure the pain even though there was a simple remedy at hand for undertaking such a path with success. Not having read the previous book in the series, Airmid remains at a loss to understand Mia, or feel sympathy for the future relationship between Mia and Jake. Some solid evidence such as a flashback or a short summary with highlights and positive notes about their relationship would have helped Airmid believe in Jake's need for and possible reacceptance of Mia.

Within the same root and stem, Airmid grew impatient with waiting until halfway through the story when an actual scene between Kyra and her beloved son, Trevor was presented. Airmid had some difficulty building sympathy for a woman whose motivation for taking a dangerous path was to reunite with her son, but who forgot to call him on the phone and when she did, made but brief conversations with him, while she seemed to put grand effort into pleasing her lover and mob boss, and fighting with her ex-husband. To be placed thusly at the opposite ends of right and wrong would sober many a mother into actions to reclaim a lost child, but Kyra continued to hesitate when opportunity spread itself open at her feet like a bloom of Lady's Mantle. It would be useful in future to take care to build up a solid foundation for a relationship that a character claims as a motivation for her actions and choices. Many herbs for tea can be grown in tame conditions just outside the kitchen door, but it is the wild varieties, found only after a difficult traipse through the bogs, mosses and rocky hillsides that make for the most satisfying taste and the most emotionally true brew.

Airmid confesses that she sped read past the overly-plentiful internal thoughts and questions presented by the main characters. She wonders why the author found it necessary to use questions, dialogue, and direct internal thoughts, often one after the other, and all aimed to present the same information. Do mortal readers require such repetition? "Mortal readers must not readily comprehend what they read." I may never come to understand the minds of mortals. Airmid suggests that the author reconsider the value of using all three of these at once. The glory and the beauty of the author's prose and dialogue is present in such a high degree in this story that a modest amount of pruning would brighten the entire garden of the scene and allow the marvelous words to flourish and, like the tiny blossoms of yarrow, shine forth in glorious storytelling wonder.

Airmid was absolutely delighted with the antagonists in the story from minor but critical characters Joe Dillon and Tom Russell to major and treacherous adversaries, mob boss Phil Lucci and his partner Angelo. Each of these characters was frightening in a realistic way that set Airmid's heart going apace as if she'd sipped too much of the nectar of the Fairy's Glove. Ex-husband Tom is thoroughly disreputable, lacking any sympathy and needing none. Airmid only wished she might have been permitted to rejoice further over the extent of Tom's injuries, but she would have settled for knowing that he spent a long time in hospital, preferably with incompetent and clumsy healers.

The author presented a well-researched and enjoyable world of work from the details of funeral and cremation practices to the particulars of police procedure. Airmid questions whether this story can rightly be cast as a mystery story since the reader was in a position of superior knowledge to the investigating detective. However, that query does not make the story less enjoyable. The author has an excellent ability to build and maintain tension and to present a conflict that appears to have no possible resolution until the very last moments of the story. Above all, Airmid closed the story with a lasting empathy for Jake Carrington, a good and worthy man who is one of the few who hold the ground of justice and mercy against a world of greed, corruption and hate. Airmid plans to read the prior book in the series, If I Fail, and holds great hope of reading more about the world of Jake Carrington.

Do you like thriller's, mystery, a story with twist, turns that keep you guessing?

With All the Hidden Sins, the second installment in the Jake Carrington Thriller series, author Marian Lanouette delivers another strong, multi-layered page turner of a story. The added bonus is it features one of my fast becoming favorite heroes; Jake Carrington, the handsome, sexy and yes, driven, homicide detective.

This time Jake is on the rebound and finds himself in love with the beautiful gambling addicted Kyra, whose day job is running a crematorium that turns out to be tied to the Mob boss Jake has been assigned to investigate. To protect Kyra from the criminals that hold her in their dangerous grip Jake must weave his way through a web of treachery, lies and betrayal to find the truth, even if it’s one he doesn’t want to know.

The twists and turns of this tale kept me on the edge of my seat from the opening paragraph to the last. If you like fast paced, suspenseful stories that will keep you guessing until the end, then this is a read you will enjoy immensely. I can’t wait for the next in the Jake Carrington series!

After reading All the Dirty Lies, I was looking forward to Marian's next book. The author did not disappoint. Thank you to Kensington Press and netgalley for an advanced copy to review.

This book is more thrilling than the first. Assigned a missing persons case, Lieutenant Jake Carrington investigates a local Mob boss. The case had gone cold, but the Mafioso isn’t taking any chances, and soon the heat turns up from another quarter. Turns out there’s more than one dangerous suspect. Jake falls for Kyra Russell who happens to run a crematorium. And the crematorium happens to be connected to the mob.

Now I can't wait for the next adventures of Jake Carrington. So glad I found this author.

Let me begin by saying that I have not read the first book in this series, so I do not know the ins and outs of Jake's previous relationship with Mia. All I can base my opinions on is this novel.

It was...... meh. I can't classify it as a mystery novel as we all know who is behind what, and I can't really classify it as a thriller as I wasn't thrilled. It tries to have elements of a thriller novel, a police thriller with a dash of romance, but it just missed the mark.

None of the characters are especially likable except maybe Kyra's son Trevor. Now don't get me wrong, I'm all for flawed characters, but there was just something one-dimensional about all of these ones. Kyra is a gambler who is in too deep, and manages to get in deeper. And while she does have a bit of a conscious, its not enough to endear her to anyone. Her soon-to-be-ex-husband Tommy is no better whose character we see go from someone who cares about his son to a jerk that tries to assault his ex. Then we have mobster Phil who is seemingly ever cliche I've ever read drawing more attention to himself when he should know better. And finally good old Jake. Who even though he admits he is still in love with his ex, finds himself with feelings for Kyra too. Even though he knows something doesn't add up with her, and knows she has flat out lied to him.

There was just too much to overlook, between the characters and the story-line, things were just too unbelievable even for a work of fiction. I do believe there are people who will enjoy this novel (as evidenced by the 4 and 5 star reviews it has accumulated), however this one was just not for me.

DISCLAIMER: I received a complimentary copy of this novel in exchange for my honest review. This has not affected my review in any way. All thoughts and opinions expressed in this review are 100% my own.

Burn in Hell had me hooked from the start though I haven't read the first book in the series. Kyra, a gambling addict on the verge of ruining her life, takes the spot light. Despite her flaws or because of them, the reader simply has to root for her. She's an engaging character showing how a slot machine can cause addictive excitement until it's time to pay the debt.

If only she wasn't falling for a cop at the same time, she might be able to cope with the situation. It just gets worse when Jake Carrington has to take over a missing person case, which leads to the man who thinks he owns Kyra now because she couldn't pay up.

Unlike Jake, the reader knows early on what dangers Kyra is facing. Burn in Hell is not your average Whodunit mystery, but a suspense mystery with human drama at its core. The real question is if and how the guilty victim can survive and get out of the mess she's landed herself in.

Jake too is a very convincing character torn between two women, but he'd never let Kyra down if only she trusted him. There's no black and white in this book. Marian Lanouette weaves an intricate and intriguing yarn.

I liked this one much better than the first. Loved the creepy idea of what Kyra found herself doing and it was very believable - her path to doing something so indecent. It's remarkable that for the most part I found myself rooting for her and preferring her to Mia. The depiction of the love triangle was very good. Usually I can't bear them, but in this one, Kyra, Mia and Jake all were just involved through not real fault of any of them in an impossible situation. I found Jake to be more likable in this story - it's sad but true that people with the best intentions cause harm. The villains were nice and creepy but not overboard. I hope there is another one in the works

Sorry, but will not finish. Could not get into the characters. Don't understand how Jake could be involved in someone and from the beginning not realize that she was an addict. Don't see how Kyra could date Jake and at the same time, burn bodies for the mob. Sorry, story line just doesn't work for me.
I see others really enjoyed it so maybe I will try one of the other books in the series but this one needs some work

Marian Lanourette (author of...If I Fail, A Jake Carrington Mystery) does it again--delivering another fast-paced and engaging story featuring Detective Jake Carrington. The story line (a missing person's case, a nervous mob boss) and well-rounded, fascinating characters made it difficult to stop reading. I didn't want the story to end! I'm looking forward to reading more from Marian.

great book - A followup to If I Fail, Jake is a well written character. A flawed, human character I love to hate a villain and Phil is evil.
As a reader, you debate whether the heroine is good or bad. Bad for all the right reasons.
I felt for her. I'm ready for the next Jake Carrington investigation!
I preferred Burn in Hell to the first, but strongly suggest a reader read both.

Homicide detective Jake Carrington deals with high stakes when it comes to investigate a missing person. This case involves the mafia and a beautiful who he should stay away from who works at a crematorium.

Will Jake be taken in by the wiles of a female or will he figure out the case before things could further damage? A well paced story.

HOW COULD KYRA NOT KNOW SHE HAS A GAMBLING PROBLEM, I GUESS IT’S LIKE OTHER ADDICTIONS, YOU’RE THE LAST TO KNOW. I REALLY DIDN’T LIKE HER SHE’S JUST NOT A LIKABLE CHARACTER, SHE MAKES TOO MANY STUPID CHOICES. THIS WAS NOT SO MUCH A MYSTERY BUT IT WAS A SAD ALMOST LOVE STORY AND TOO LONG. ;\

**Copy provided to Bayou Book Junkie for my reading pleasure in hopes of an unbiased opinion, a review was not a requirement.**

The second book in the Jake Carrington series is All the Hidden Sins. Unlike the first book, this is more romance than police procedural. Most of the good feelings I had for Jake in the first book were lost in this one. Though the first story was told from multiple viewpoints, it was still mostly Jake’s story. This one is told from Jake’s viewpoint also, but quite a bit is told by Kyra, a character that I hated. She was a whiny, self-centered, hateful, disgusting person and was way too much of this book for me to enjoy it. And, Jake’s continuing pursuit of her, made me think less of him.

This book follows Kyra as she gambles, as she commits crimes while justifying herself, and acts as the mother done wrong while accepting no responsibility for what a horrible person she is. It also follows along with Jake as he’s investigating crime while trying for a relationship for Kyra but claiming he’s still in love with Mia.

I had expectations coming into this book since I loved the first one so much, and it definitely wasn’t what I expected. I have never wished for the death of a character more than I wished for Kyra’s. But, just like Jake showed poor choices by dating Chloe in the first book, he showed extremely poor choice in his pursuit of Kyra, who didn’t show much interest in dating him, even while doing so.

I’ll still consider reading the next book in the series, though I don’t know that Jake can be redeemed after this one. I thought the first book with just a side of romance was perfectly done so this one surprised me and not in a good way. If you’re going to read this series, you really need to read it in the appropriate order. The characters are introduced and continued on, storylines continue and you get a feel for the characters in the first book. And, I’m sure plenty of people will enjoy reading a character that you love to hate. I mean, there was no love. I was pretty much wishing for Kyra’s death within seconds of her introduction. Where’s a good serial killer when you need him, lol ;)

All the Hidden Sins by Marian Lanouette
Jake Carrington #2

Coming into the series on book two may have impacted my rating. Why? I don’t know Jake’s background with Mia, the woman he seems to have broken up with in book two. I also feel I might have known him better if I had read book one. I do try to come into series at the beginning but had an interest in reading this book so gave it a try and am glad I did.

Jake is, as mentioned, not with the woman he loves and at a social gathering meets Kyra. Kyra is NOT someone I could relate to at all and that could be because I am not a gambling addict. I just didn’t get her and I did not understand Jake’s attraction to her. The choices she made were incomprehensible to me but did make the story more interesting. Jake’s ability to finally figure out the missing person angle of the story, the tie-in to the mafia and Kyra and the reappearance of Mia all were tied together by the end of the book.

Did I enjoy the book? It was entertaining
Would I read more in this series? Probably not
Why not? I couldn’t really relate to the characters for some reason.

Thank you to NetGalley and Kensington-Underground for the ARC – This is my honest review.

Well I didn't enjoy Jake as much the second time around. Mia just showed herself to be a character I didn't like but hells bells I wasn't too fond of Kyra and her choices either so what does that say for me. Well after you read it we'll see if you feel the same way. This story just seemed too long and it really bothered me how it just ended. . . again. This may be this author's style of a cliff hanger but it really stinks to not even have the thought finished or actually feel like it was the end of a chapter much less the end of the book.

Anyway the book is filled with police procedure stuff that feels real. The life of a homicide cop is shown as they handle multiple cases some solved some carried over to the next book. Will I read more probably not but not because it isn't well written it's just the police jargon is a bit much for me. It's a great mystery and the author throws in plenty of twist to keep you on your toes.

What do you get when a handsome detective, on the rebound, falls in love with a beautiful woman who is going through a messy divorce/custody battle and has a gamgling addiction with ties to the mob??? You get a fantastic page-turning, full of action, romance, twists and turns and full of surprises book that you do not want to put down. This is one of the best books I have read this year and I look forward to reading more of this author's books. I highly recommend this fast-paced, suspenseful thriller.

Knuckle-biting Suspense
The story begins when gambling addict Kyra Russell is offered a deal she can't refuse from a slimy mob boss. I couldn't turn the pages fast enough, wondering what she was going to do. Then she meets Jake Carrington a handsome police detective with high morals and they begin a hot affair. The stakes keep ratcheting up as Kyra tries to do what's best for her son. The plot has hairpin turns and twists that leave you dizzy. I read it in two sittings, because I couldn't put it down.Marian Lanouette's characters are wonderfully flawed and her story is riveting. If you like original plots heaping with suspense and filled fresh characters, this is the book for you.
