Rate this book
Maya Price is a typical eighteen-year-old girl without many worries. Her biggest problems include getting ready to leave her hometown for college, figuring out how to avoid her ever-so-strange stepmother and trying to muddle though her feelings for her best friend, Pete. Yet, one of her last nights in her hometown, she and Pete are in a car accident. A stranger pulls Maya from the accident, leaving Pete behind, and takes her out of this world and into another dimension. Maya soon discovers that she has been taken to a dimension called Leets by a group of people that call themselves shifters. Shifters are of mixed human and onyx blood and have various abilities. These shifters are able to travel between dimensions, control the four elements (fire, earth, wind, water) and the five senses (sight, sound, smell, touch and taste). Their leader, Victoria, informs Maya that she, too, is a shifter and that she must choose to join them or risk being sought out by their greatest enemy, a shifter named Leonas. Maya joins Victoria and her ragtag group of rebel shifters at a training camp called Level One. he is teamed up with a group of seven other shifters, including a streetsmart girl named Luz, who is especially adept at controlling fire, her twin sister Espy, and a nervous boy named Lamar, who can manipulate sound better than any other shifter. Together, Maya’s team trains for the battles that will soon be inevitable. However, Maya soon learns that her purpose is not to just move the earth or send water flying into the air. There are rumors of a hidden prophecy and that the prophecy mentions Maya by name. Supposedly, the prophecy says that Maya will one day have to choose a side and will be essential in bringing her chosen ally to power...

This quick paced story is set in the real world and in the world known as Leets. Maya Price is taken to a different dimension and told that she is a shifter, and that she is pivotal to a prophecy that could bring peace to their land.

I absolutely loved this story. I enjoyed all of the characters and all of the friendships that were forged. I enjoyed the fact that the characters were well created and relatable. The world that was created was rich and vibrant and I loved the idea of being able to control the four different elements. This story is full of action, loss, and friendship. Maya Price is left reeling over the choices she has made and the position she has been put in based on a prophecy that was created years ago. Told through diary entries, memories from characters in the future, transcripts, and Maya’s own narrative, this story is a breath of fresh air in the young adult fantasy market. It is a quick read and is well worth your time. Read it! You don't know what you're missing!

This story is great from beginning to end without a moment of boredom. The ending is full of shocking turns that will leave you begging for the next installment.

¿Como describirlo en una palabra? WAO!!!!

Series book: Yes
Will I read the Next: Yes

Well damn. I'm speechless. I don't read a lot of sci-fi, or watch a lot of sci-fi, or associate with sci-fi(I didn't even watch Star Wars. That's right "I am your father" is lost on me). So because of how sci-fi this book sounded, I wasn't expecting much. But I enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would. Identified is definitely worth the time it took to read.

I first started reading this book a few months ago, but I put it down again after a few chapters. The reason I stopped was because every word that ended with "ing" was changed to just end with "in'" instead. I am sorry, but this is my biggest pet peeve. "Country writin.'" But, thankfully, after Maya left Diamond, it stopped for the most part. Otherwise, I thought having those entries and records every few chapters got confusing. Some were in the past, others in the future, sometimes I thought it spoiled itself. But after you got use to that, the writing was pretty easy to get through.

This is one of those "There is a prophecy...You-random person from random place-are the chosen one" books. I'm not saying that's a bad thing. It's basically what gives this story purpose. It was different from other stories of it's kind because the prophecy was more recent and Maya was mentioned by name. In that way it was pretty original. It was also a really unpredictable book, every time you think somethings gonna happen Bam! 180. You're back to not knowing what the hell is going on. That also made it just a little bit confusing, but not enough so that you wanna put the book down. The plot was well paced, definitely not boring, and totally original.
I feel like at the beginning it was much harder to get to know the characters than later in the book. All I got from the family was that they were nice and very country. Later on though, the characters were alot easier to picture. They all had backstories, reasons to fight, and distinct personalities. I think Maya was a pretty ideal main character, she had insecurities but didn't let them cripple her, reasons to fight, and everything to lose.

At first I thought Nathaniel might be the romantic interest in this book, but nope he wasn't it. Neither were any of the other guys in Leets. She had this thing for Pete but they weren't even in the same dimension...Let's just say there isn't actually any romance to review.

SUMMARY OF REVIEW(In case you don't actually feel like reading the review):
Writing: 4 out of 5
Plot: 4.5 out of 5
characters: 4.5 out of 5
Romance: NA out of 5
Overall: 4.5 out of 5

Identified was a very interesting read. It started out really slow for me and I had some trouble getting into it. However, once I was able to get into the storyline, it became very intriguing and I found myself wanting to know more.

Maya Price is an average 18 year old girl, or so it seems. She just graduated high school and is preparing to enter college when she is suddenly taken from her world to another dimension know as Leets. Maya is a shifter, half human/half Letian, which means she can travel between the two dimensions. Maya learns of a prophecy that mentions her and decides she must search for the prophecy to defeat Leonas, bring peace to Leets and protect her loved ones. Along with her friends and team, she goes in search of the prophecy. However, not everything is as it seems. Lives are endangered and everything will be changed.

This book was written in the third person but it is Maya’s story so she is the primary character involved. I liked Maya as a main character. She wasn’t too whiny and she was super smart. She was very powerful and I liked that she caught on quickly when introduced to her powers. She cares deeply for her friends and family and will do anything to protect them. Leaving her family and Pete behind was extremely hard for her but she knew it was the best way to protect them. My heart broke a little when she said goodbye to Pete.

This book was definitely more about plot development than character development but it worked for me. Normally, I’m all about the characters but there were so many different characters in this book and the plot was super intricate so it definitely shined more. It was a little slow at first but when they started training to hone in their powers and begin searching for the prophecy, it got a lot more interesting. As the plot moved forward, there were chapters that jumped ahead to the future with journal entries looking back on the present. They were very ominous and suspenseful, hinting at things that hadn’t happened yet but not giving enough information to give anything away. That definitely intrigued me and made me want to keep reading. Of course, this is a series so while my apetite was wetted, it still isn’t satisfied.

Overall, I actually really enjoyed this book. I was nervous in the beginning since I struggled to delve into it but it finally grabbed my attention and really held it to the end. The writing was really well done and I loved the way the author wove in journal entries, letters and testimonies into the present plot that was occurring. While it didn’t leave on a major cliffhanger, there are definitely questions that were left unanswered and I know I will continue to the end because I really need to know what happens.

I received Identified: The Maya Price Story by Faith A. Rice-Mills from the publisher for my honest review on their book tour.

Imagine waking up one day and not knowing that sometime that day you will find out that you have some sort of powers and have to leave your family to help people fight against the enemy. This is what happens to Maya Price, this book is her interesting and powerful story.

I’m not sure what it is but lately I’ve been reading books that contain characters with crazy super powers and every time I pick one up I’m skeptical but everytime I end up loving them, and that did not change with this book either I loved it! The thing about these kind of books is that they never get boring because there are never powers that are exactly alike. For example Maya has the power to manipulate the earth and its resources very easily which is something I haven’t seen before but it was very useful to her.

My favorite part of this book was that at the end of every chapter there was something special like an entry from Maya’s diary or a letter from someone in her family or friend circle. I enjoyed this so much because it gave you a short break from the story so that when you get back into it you are excited to see what’s going on with the characters.

The whole two dimensions thing was pretty cool as well, especially how they got back and forth between the two dimensions but one thing that I did not like about that is that humans can’t handle going back and forth so basically people like Maya can’t really have human relationships unless she were to stay on earth, which really sucks!

The characters in this book were really enjoyable like the twins Espy and Luz I loved how they obviously looked exactly the same but they had completely different attitudes and completely different powers as well. The only thing that I did not like that was incorporated with their characters was that they often spoke in spanish. Now this is good and bad good because when their spanish was small I could understand what they were saying but when there were long statements in spanish I could not understand them and that annoyed me. I also enjoyed Paige’s character and not only because we have the same name but also because she seemed like me more or less she did not talk much throughout the book and that is me all the way. Again though there was a part in the beginning of the book where she was being interviewed and even though I finished the book I still don’t understand why that interview was added but I wish I did.

Overall the book gets a 4.5 ouf of 5 stars it was phenomenal and I cannot wait for book 2!

I've come to notice that there is an extremely fine line between poorly written paranormal fiction, and outstanding paranormal fiction. A pace written too fast in either direction can make or break a novel, a character or situation described just a little too much can have me wanting to put it down. It's such a fine art, crafting non-existent, and far-fetched worlds in such a way that makes it believable to even the skeptical of skeptics. Identified was a novel that someone clearly took the time to care about enough. Faith A. Rice-Mills used a fine tooth comb it seems, ensuring that nothing happened too soon, no one believed everything immediately, and the best part, the "paranormal aspect", was gradual, and had the most satisfying build-up. Identified is written from different perspectives, aside from the ongoing Maya Price story line in present time, there are letters, memories and journal entries from other characters dated in the past and future. I loved the flow, it was perfect without being too perfect-told at a pace that was realistic enough to grasp onto.

Maya was outstanding as the main lead. You want to know absolutely everything about her, right away, and then you want it to stop, and let her new fate slowly mold her into something else. I was never bored, or impatient, or frustrated, I was only engaged, every.last.word was something that needed to be told, and I wanted to listen. The characters are plenty, but there will get under your skin, and you will find yourself picking out your favourites very early on. The idea of a "prophecy," and the "chosen one," might be an overplayed route, but when it's done well, it seems as though you're reading about the idea for the very first time. That's what Identified did for me, I was taken to someone I've visited a million times, but yet, it was the first time, and I was completely.blown.away.

Maya Price is a happy-go-lucky eighteen-year-old whose life is going just the way she wants it. She's looking forward to the rest of her life, as well as spending more time with her beloved best friend, Pete. Deep inside, she harbors feelings for him that she wishes she could make known to him. He means the world to her, and she'd do anything to keep him close.

While out on the town one night, she and Pete are involved in a car accident, one that leaves her entire world fractured in more ways than one. For Maya, the events that have begun to unfold make her question her sanity. There's a stranger who is now intent on saving her life. In her mind, he's a bit of good fortune that she and Pete could use in the midst of such tragedy. Sadly, the man's intentions are anything but good.

Transported to another dimension, Maya's world is soon turned topsy-turvy. Everywhere she looks, nothing is as it seems. She's now surrounded by a group of shifters, people with extraordinary powers that can manipulate the elements, and change at will. Such a thought is mind-boggling to her, and she does her best to deny what she sees. There's no way she's what these people say she is.

Unfortunately, there's no time to decide as to whether what she's being told is true or not. The prophecy has been spoken, and the enemy skulks in the darkest corners, ready to pounce on the unsuspecting. War is riding on the horizon, and Maya is the key to bringing prosperity to one of the world's factions. She just needs to make the right choice. The question is, how can she do that when she's not even sure that she's the one the prophecy speaks of?

A truly unique storyline, Identified captures your attention from the get-go. We're introduced to the loving Maya and her best friend, Pete. Their friendship seems to be very close-knit, and they're looking forward to spending more time together. Sadly, the car accident changes everything for them.

Faith has taken the idea of shifters a little further, and given this group of rag-tag rebels super powers that will help them make their world a better place. I honestly found the concept quite intriguing, since when I think of shifters, my mind travels to werewolves, werecats, and the like. This is definitely a great start to this series, and I look forward to what's to come.

While I have not read much Young Adult Fiction since I was well…a young adult, I was pleasantly surprised by this book. The story of Maya Price incorporates a lot of themes that are commonly covered in the Young Adult genre, such as young love and duty. Faith Rice Mills’ prose flows naturally and is able to keep you engaged in the story.

Though the author covers familiar themes, I also enjoyed how they diverged from common Young Adult stereotypes and clichés. One trend that I’ve come to dislike in books/movies/tv is the infallible protagonist. In this media, the protagonist is always likeable and almost never does wrong. Faith Rice-Mills did a great job of making me like Maya Price in the beginning of the book and forcing me to root for her throughout the story. As the story progressed, I tended to like her less and less. Just to clarify: I liked the character and how she developed; I just didn’t want to root for her any more. I think that this is a bold development in the story, but could set the reader up for a fulfilling redemption story arc.

The main story is told from the 3rd person perspective of Maya Price, but each chapter ends with a letter/diary entry/etc. from a supporting character and sometimes Maya. These sections fill in details that are left out of the main storyline, offer backstory to some of the supporting characters, and in some occasions provide foreshadowing. It is a clever technique to pique the reader’s interest and prevent them from wanting to put the book down. The sections work quite well because the author is able to adapt their writing style to the perspective they are writing from, ie. one characters voice reads very different from another’s.

My understanding is that this book is the first in a series following Maya Price. As is expected with the first book in a series, there is much more to be told. Fortunately, the author did a good job of wrapping up the story they introduced, while still leaving the reader wanting to continue.

I can’t wait to read the next one!

I love stories set in alternate dimensions featuring strong female characters, and in that sense, Identified didn't disappoint. Maya was a great MC, and the rest of the cast was just as nicely developed. The relationships were well-drawn, and the friendship aspect was by far my favorite part of the story. Maya's strength and protectiveness was inspiring, Paige's pain heartbreaking, Luz had me laughing out loud with her explosive temperament.

Mills takes something familiar, such as the ability to manipulate elements and builds a unique world around it, a world at the same time beautiful and dangerous thanks to a cruel and power-greedy shifter and a prophecy that somehow involves Maya, though not necessarily for good. As the story progresses, it gets considerably darker, much to my delight because I enjoyed the action and fighting scenes.

The narrative is sometimes interrupted by journal entries, reports or letters from various characters. Consequently you get a better understanding of the events leading to the main plot, but also get glimpses of what is to come. That knowledge kept me at the edge of my seat, and though I thought I was prepared...I wasn't prepared for that.

One thing that I disliked was the prologue. I am generally not a fan of prologues where a character states that their story must be told. Eventually, yes, it is a story worth telling, but I prefer to be allowed to judge it for myself, and that it shows in the story instead of telling me upfront. I also felt it should go through another round of edits since there were quite a few misplaced commas.

There is a snippet from the sequel at the end of Identified, and holy cow, it made my heart pound more than anything I have read in quite a while.

Overall, it was nice, save for the unfortunate prologue. Trust me, that ending will leave you begging for more.

The story starts off with Maya in her hometown, not quite fitting in but enjoying her life there. It is the eve of a “See Ya Later!” picnic which is a huge gathering to say “see ya later” to all the seniors graduating and leaving for college. Some very strange things occur before Maya is whisked off to another dimension and told that she is the subject of some important hidden prophecy.

The book started off really slow for me. The subject matter was interesting and I was eager to see what Maya was exactly and more about this other dimension. But we don’t get to that until quite a ways into the book. So that first chunk was kind of hard for me to get through. It IS pretty interesting however, that between the chapters telling this story, there’s inserts of letters, journal entries and such. They really give the story more background and sometimes I actually enjoyed them more (during the parts that were slow).

Once things get going, I found myself more wrapped up in the story. The aspect of family is huge in the book and I think Faith did a great job building the family relationships we see.

The whole aspect of the shifters and their powers was really intriguing, especially as you see them work at using them and manipulating the elements! Just seeing them using their powers was pretty cool. There is another part in the middle that lagged a bit for me though. I feel like after the midpoint, then the pace picked up and things really started happening.

While the world building of the different dimension of Leets with onyx and shifters was well done and very interesting, I feel like the build up took too long. That lag caused me to not get into the story as soon as I would’ve liked, but when I finally did, the action was there and I did enjoy the ending!

AMAZING READ!
I am a TV Junkie , so for me to give a book a 5 star rating it has to be good enough that I choose reading that book over turning on the TV. Let me tell you that for the last couple of days I have not turned on the TV once because I could not put Identified down!

Identified is a story about Maya Price, a girl with no past. She was adopted by the Price family when she was younger but has no recollection of where she came from. She has grown to love her family and especially her adoptive siblings. Just when life was looking good: her best (guy) friend was taking interest in her, a track scholarship to a great school, her world or what she knew of it gets flipped up side down. Maya struggles to put all her feelings aside to do what is nessesary to keep her family and loved ones safe. That means leaving the only world she knew behind to be apart of a world she didn't know existed.

I found Identified to be a refreshing new story that hooked me from page one. I was so interested in Maya's past and where she came from, and where her current relationships were going... throw a different dimension in the mix and BAM, you get an addicting read! This really was a great book that I could not put down! I can't wait for book 2 in the series Burdened !

More Goodies

Plot: like I said A-M-A-Z-I-N-G and addicting! Kept me wanting more.

Characters: Great characters, they were very well developed, and the way it was written left me wanting to know more about each one of them!

Cover: I am a huge fan of simple bold covers. Identified hit the spot! If you read the story you would know it is completely appropriate for Maya.

I have been fascinated with the idea of parallel dimensions for a long time. Sometimes it’s like stepping through a curtain and into another world; sometimes it’s jumping through a time portal; sometimes it’s catching glimpses of the others through the shadows. “Identified” takes it a step further with a different race of people including the hybrids of unions between this race of beings and humans. These hybrids are known as shifters and because of their unique heritage of half-onyx and half-human, they can move between the two worlds. Maya Price is a shifter, although she doesn’t know it until the night of the high school graduation party when the hunters come to find her.

The story is rich, the characters interesting, the plot fascinating. The flow of action is broken by excerpts from interrogations, journal entries, deep thoughts from the future from different characters. This gives added depth to the story, helping you to understand a little bit more about each character, a little bit more about the story line. While the pace isn’t as fast as other books, it certainly is a compelling read. I could do with more explanations on the rebellion and Leonas and even Maya’s birth mother’s story, as we only get a glimpse of that.

I read this book on my kindle (ecopy for book tour/review purposes) and my heart started to drop when I realized I was at 90% and there wasn’t a conclusion yet. Not even the makings of one! And then at 94% I wanted to cry as the book ended. I read on to see what I could expect in the next book and now I patiently wait to hear more of when it is due and when it is coming out.

Faith Rice-Mills creates characters so unique yet familiar the reader instantly develops bonding relationships, especially with the protagonist, Maya Price. Maya is a young marvel in both the dimensions she calls home. On Earth she is a dedicated athlete, a lovesick teenager and a fiercely loyal sister. On Leets she is a gifted shifter, a strong willed student and a fiercely loyal friend. Just like in any relationship, the reader will be frustrated with Maya and at times incensed, but always on her side. I became quite fond of many of the characters and invested in their well being; Luz the fiery Latina, Summer the eccentric sister and Lamar the prodigious drummer.

Identified examines many themes found in young adult novels; love, loss, growth, friendship, and of course, identity. However, this does not seem to be a typical YA novel. Rice-Mills spares the reader fluff and challenges them to create their own interpretations. The story left me heartbroken, craving revenge and redemption.

Rice-Mills' prose flows seamlessly and is peppered with intriguing dialogue. Furthering the narrative, each chapter begins with a journal entry or interview providing details about the various characters. I highly recommend this novel to any reader young or not so young. As an adult reader, I read it through in one day, rarely taking a break. Identified is a vivid and compelling story, I truly could not put it down.

I received a free copy of this book for the blog tour. Thank you!
When I read the synopsis I was very excited and wanted immediately to read this book. Well, after I read it, I can say that I enjoy this read, but not as much as I expected. ‘Identified’ it’s a book with its pros and cons.
Let’s start with the pros.
The characters are very likable and real. Maya is my favorite character so far. She’s just adorable and strong and determinated and I couldn’t not like her.
The author makes you believe in her story and in her characters. And she has a lot of imagination. Her world is amazing and the world-building is excellent!
I laughed a lot at this book. Maya has an incredible sense of humor and she always has a funny reply to give. This is one of the reason why I liked her so much.
The book is unpredictable. It keeps you guessing and tunring the page.
Now to the cons.
‘Identified’ can be a little boaring sometimes. There are some scenes that are so slow-paced and full of long descriptions that I felt like I was going to fall asleep.
It took me some time to link with the characters and become interested in their destinies. Also, the beginning was really hard to be honest.
Over all, ‘Identified’ is a great fantasy. If you are looking for a book that will lead you to another world, then you found the perfect book. I recommend it to every fan of fantasy.

Beneath the Moon and Stars review

I was pretty impressed with this one. I really enjoyed the characters and the concept was really unique. The story was a little complex at times though.

Maya Price has more to her than she knows. She must leave her family and go to a school for people like her. She must connect with her powers and find a prophecy that is supposedly based around her.

I liked Maya a lot. But, I felt like we didn't get to see all of her. She had to potential to be insanely fierce. Instead she was just okay. I really wanted more from her because her role in the story is so huge. I liked her dedication to her family. I also liked that she never gave up. Maya had some amazing companions. They made a great addition to the story and I can't wait to see more of them.

This took me awhile to get into. It has some fast moments but took some time to get there. There was some action but it was pretty much towards the end. I did wish for more in the first half. I liked that I couldn't predict the story. I liked the unique aspects such as the magic and the villains. I think this was a pretty good start to the series. I'm super excited to see where the story goes

If you are looking for a new young adult fantasy, look no further. Identified: the Maya Price Story is a page-turning adventure with many subplots and themes that I'm sure will be further explored in new installments. At least I hope so!

While I did like Maya as the story unfolded, she is a fierce heroine, I gradually began to question her choices. But whereas most young adult fiction leaves it at that, Mills creates Maya to be accountable for her actions and the consequences they bring about. All of the characters are relatable and I quickly became invested in the story. Two dimensions, vividly depicted, and written in a third person perspective (Maya's), had me quickly turning the pages to see what would happen next. I also really liked the journal entries from another character or Maya from a future time, that gives clues to future occurrences or more detail on the past.

All in all, a very stellar read and I can't wait to read the next one! By the end of the book, I was frantic to find out what happens next!
