I didn't realize this was a kids book when I put it into my que. As always I love bathroom readers. This was not it.
Also: I don't think this would interest me as a kid. "A group of Blue Jays is called a PARTY", uh okay. "A Tigers stripes are different of the left and right sides of it's body", why would they be the same? Even interesting facts are kind of lame when presented solo. "Sharks have existed longer than trees" is interesting but just stating it? I am like AND? "The hottest stars are blue", okay... um WHY would make it interesting. "A Pennsylvania bakery made a 54 foot hot dog", so? Why is that interesting? How big was the world's biggest pizza? Don't know. Don't care.

The sectional format of the facts allowed for a very interesting read. Very well organized for a young reader.

Categories/Genres for this class fulfilled by this book: Non-fiction

Estimate of age level of interest: kindergarten through adult

Estimate of reading level: Guided Reading Level: 0307

Brief description:

Identify at least 2 characteristics of this genre and subgenre and discuss how they appear in your book: The illustrations/Photos enhance the information in this book. The book relies heavily on the photos added to this book. There are photos of animal oddities like the Star Nosed Mole, and human challenges, like the man who walked up a hill on a tight-rope. Diversity: I can safely say that the photos in the book and the topics covered are certainly diverse. The facts are grouped by Extreme Weirdness, This Way Up, What's Your Number, Over the Top, It's Only Natural, That's Creepy, What's the Deal, Eye Wonder, and Wild World. With all of those topics covered, the book travels all over the world focusing on diverse cultures, animals, and events. From a huge lobster statue in Australia (been there) to bee attracting contest in China, many differences are found in this book.

In what ways and how well does the book as a whole serve its intended audience: I feel like this book has a little of everything for everyone. From strange animal facts, to weird human tricks, this book gives random and cool information. The audience will find facts about random people, places, and things, so it will highly engage.
