My Hope Is Found

Rate this book
Gideon O’Riley has been given another chance at a life with Lonnie. But will the fight for her heart risk it all over again?

After finally finding love with his sweet bride Lonnie, Gideon’s heart was torn when a woman from his past claimed to be his true and rightful wife, forcing him away from his family. God’s merciful hand saw Gideon through the heartache, and with Cassie’s blessing, he is able to return home. But his journey back through the Blue Ridge Mountains will hold a trial he never anticipated.

Meanwhile, Lonnie determines to seal off her heart from Gideon, convinced he is lost to her forever. Strengthening her resolve to move on is her growing fondness for the handsome Scotsman, Toby McKee—the young reverend she has come to care for deeply. His proposal of marriage offers a bright future for her and her young son.

Yearning to allow joy back into her life, Lonnie must put aside the broken pieces of her heart that still love Gideon. When he returns to find her betrothed to another, he has to place his hope in God, trusting that the One who redeemed their love once can do it again.

The Cadence of Grace Series was at once painful and beautiful. It was rewarding to watch Lonnie's faith sustain her and Gideon's faith develop. I put off reading this final book of the series as I was nervous about how Lonnie's story would end. I should have been a bit more like Lonnie and not worried and had faith.

I'm the sort who likes to pick up a series when it's completed.

I'm also not the type who dissects each moment in the books -- you can read those in spades, if you want.

That said, reading this one book at a time, waiting, hoping, praying for the characters -- In book 1: it was good. Sweet. But there was unfinished business. At the end of book 2: Though My Heart is Torn -- I was in a desperate hour. When I received book 3: I tore through My Hope is Found as soon as it arrived, and weeping and laughing and falling deeper in love with every page turned. Yes. Tissues handy. Sometimes, we women need a good cry.

Not since Francine Rivers have I fallen so hard for a Christian book series. And I'm talking about the Mark of The Lion books, which I feel were her best. Joanne Bischof, with her subtle turn of phrase and sincere, real-to-life characters created two amazing heroes. Each worthy of Lonnie's heart. In a love triangle woven like none I've ever experienced. A quadrangle, really, when you consider the interloper, Cassie. It was tough for me to find a place in my heart for a stubborn, strong willed, selfish character, but Bischof did it.

Now, as a reader, I'm grateful for the end. I'm also looking to the future, wondering if there might be some way the two left behind could find their own heart's desire. And because of that, I'm sending this trio of books out as my Christmas Gift of Choice. Three books to touch the heart, mind, and soul.

In this day and age when our choices are displayed in public, our foibles so prominent on social media, a look back at turn of the century Appalacia shows that hope really can be found for flawed people when they have a heart for God, and can take their eyes off of themselves.

HIGHLY Recommended. This author deserves your support.

This series, The Cadence of Grace, has touched me very deeply. It's not your every day, run of the mill Christian fiction series of books. These books by Joanne Bischof are extraordinarily spiritual and heartwarming.

You do need to read the books in order; I don't think they'd work well as stand alone novels. When I finished the first in the series, I thought, "Now that's some awesome writing." Bischof doesn't just focus on happy endings with a bit of the spiritual thrown in for good measure. She writes in such a way that the reader is totally drawn into the story, lives her characters' lives and feels their pain. And the spiritual lessons learned are mighty and powerful.

This last one, My Hope Is Found, finds Gideon, being released by Cassie to go to Lonnie, on his way back to the Bennett's farm. His longing for Lonnie nearly overwhelms him and he walks almost without taking a break to sleep. He is prevented from going straight to Lonnie by circumstances beyond his control and he hopes against hope she is still waiting for him.

Meanwhile, Lonnie is growing more and more attracted to the Scottish preacher, Toby, and he definitely loves Lonnie and proposes marriage. Gideon shows up and all bets are off now.

I loved each of these books and all the characters were well written and very real. Lonnie is a young woman of principle who will always follow God's ways, even though her heart is broken into a million pieces more than once. But Gideon...ah, he's someone you nearly want to hate, but somehow Bischof grows this young man in the Lord into someone that God would be proud to call His son.

Gideon goes through many transformations in this last book and his encounter with God in the barn late one night had me weeping. Wow. There's nothing else I can say that would add to this scene. Wow is the word. Moving beyond words and heartbreakingly precious.

These books are not some kind of 'fluff' Christian fiction and not some that could be written for the secular market were it not for the word 'God' thrown in here and there. These books are powerful, deep and life changing. She writes of heartbreak, sin, forgiveness, redemption and surrendering to the will of God.

I will never hesitate to buy a book with Joanne Bischof's name on the cover. This one is not even released yet and already I am hungry for another.

I was provided with an advanced reader copy of this book, which is no way influenced this review.

If you're a fan of love triangles, Joanne Bischof has written one that will keep you in knots while you bite your fingernails to nubs. Never have I wanted to flip to the last page of a book to see the outcome! But I held on and refrained. So glad I did.

My Hope Is Found is her third book in The Cadence of Grace series. I have enjoyed Gideon and Lonnie's story, anticipating how it will all end. Will they end up together or will she choose the tender-hearted and honorable Toby McKee?

You'll have to read and see! I'm not telling.

I will say that Bischof knows how to spin a tale of romance and set you smack dab into the Appalachian mountains. Whether the winter chill or the new buds of spring, I was there for every season, feeling every joy, disappointment and heart break.

Bischof's characters are well-written with many layers. They might as well have stood up off the page and had a cup of tea with me. And many times I wish they would have.

Even though I'm not ready to say good-bye to these characters (I thoroughly enjoyed them), I can't wait to see what Bischof writes next.

While you don't have to read the first two books to understand the story line, I personally recommend reading them in order simply for the surprising twists and turns with each book and to fully appreciate Gideon and Lonnie's journey from start to finish.

My Hope Is Found by Joanne Bischof
Setting: Fancy Gap and other small Appalachian towns of Virginia
Time Frame: Unknown.. appears to be early 1800s?
Lonnie Sawyer later Lonnie O'Riley: Young innocent girl with a rough life
Gideon O’Riley: Husband, sadly found to be married to someone else
Jebediah and Elsie Bennett: Lovely couple who took them in
Cassie: Gideon's first wife marriage, annullment not complete
Toby McKee: New minister in love with Lonnie
Last book in the Cadence of Grace series.

Heartache, confusion, love, and peace all coursed through Lonnie in this book. Excitement, frustration, resentment, shame, humility, anger and resignation flooded Gideon, barely accepting one when another would surface.

In the previous book Lonnie is left without a husband when she learned Gideon was previously married to Cassie, both unaware the annulment process had never been completed. So, because Lonnie insisted this was God's law, reluctantly he had to go back to his first wife. After he left, a new preacher (Toby) arrived in town, working at Jebediah's farm to earn a living. Toby fell in love and asked Jebediah to bless a marriage proposal to Lonnie.

Meanwhile, because Gideon remained physically faithful to Lonnie, Cassie resigned herself to giving Gideon his freedom from their marriage to return to Lonnie. But will he find an unattached Lonnie when he returns home? Will he find the paperwork has been finished this time, and the annulment process completed? Will he be accepted when he returns?

This was another roller coaster book for me. My Hope Is Found lead me on a gamut of emotions. From annoyance with Gideon for not simply writing to Lonnie informing her of his news, to realizing later it might not have done much good, to satisfied that everyone accepted God's timing in their lives.

Truly I fell in love with both heroes. Gideon may have been impulsive and angry and needed to just grow up at times, but he also expressed such love, gentleness and yielding that he won me over. Toby was loving, patient, Godly and an all around great catch. I would have married him without question! What a decision for Cassie to make. But it all came down to acknowledging God's will, His timing, and what her heart told her.

I think I'd recommend this to anyone.

********SPOILER*********

I received my advance readers copy of the 3rd book in the Cadence of Grace series yesterday in the mail and it probably took me a total of 6 hours to read since I couldn't put it down. The book starts up right where the 2nd book, Though My Heart is Torn, left off with Gideon getting ready to leave Cassie after she has told him that she will give him and annulment. Gideon then goes back to Lonnie, who has become interested in the new preacher Toby. It was just as good as I hoped for. I will say there were moments when I was afraid that Lonnie was gonna end up with Toby (I'm obviously all for Gideon) that I would literally yell out "no!" and my husband would be like, "not as good as you want it to be". Then a few chapters later I would be saying "yes, yes, yes!" and he would say "guess it is". I couldn't put it down last night and read until 1am. (my husband came to tell me he was going to bed and could I keep the commentary down to a minimum) I had told him at one point that Lonnie better end up with Gideon, or she can marry Toby and then he can die so that she gets back with Gideon but if the book ended with her with Toby, I was gonna throw it across the room! The book is filled with many twists and turns as Lonnie has to decided on whether she will choose the man she 1st loved and who is the father of her child or the man who she has grown to love. To find out who she ends up with, you'll just have to read the book =)

Joanne Bischof is an author I discovered this year and I am so glad I did. Her series, The Cadence of Grace, has touched my heart, pulled at my emotions, and taught me so much about love and forgiveness. In Be Still My Soul, Gideon and Lonnie are forced to marry when Lonnie’s father believes Gideon took liberties. The book is about their love growing for each other and Gideon growing up and learning to be a responsible man. In Though My Heart is Torn, we find out that Gideon has another wife besides Lonnie and he is forced to annul his marriage with Lonnie to be with Cassie. At the end of that book, Cassie realizes that she will never hold Gideon’s heart and she lets him go to be with Lonnie.

As I began My Hope is Found, I wondered what the book would hold. I knew I would find tears, pain, and suffering. But I knew that within the pain, I would find love, happiness, and unspeakable joy.
I started the book knowing that I wanted Gideon and Lonnie to be together. I have loved their relationship throughout the series and it broke my heart when they had to separate. But what I didn’t expect was to fall in love with Toby, another man vying for Lonnie’s attention, as well.
Lonnie is determined to forget about Gideon since she can’t have him. Part of her forgetting involves accepting a proposal from Toby. But what Lonnie doesn’t expect is for Gideon to come back, a free man, and steal her heart again. Lonnie must choose between two wonderful men. They don’t make it easy either, both bowing and scraping to do whatever she wants or needs. I don’t know how Lonnie ever made any choice because both of these men are truly some of the best heroes that were ever written.

Throughout this book we find the characters needing to trust God and rely on him to give them the desires of their heart. Your heart will ache as you read this book. Your heartstrings will be pulled in several directions and don’t be surprised if tears fall while you read this. I honestly love when books touch me so much that they make me cry and this book definitely did that to me.
I highly, highly, highly recommend The Cadence of Grace series by Joanne Bischof. They are definitely some of my favorite reads from this year!

“Letting go can be a harder way to love than holding on.”

That’s what was told to Gideon in chapter four of the final book in Joanne Bischof’s Cadence of Grace series. That line set up the struggles Gideon, Lonnie and Toby would all face throughout the pages and chapters of My Hope is Found.

As Gideon makes his way back to Fancy Gap and the family he was forced to leave behind all those months ago, he has no idea what awaits him. Toby has patiently waited for Lonnie to overcome the grief losing Gideon had caused, but his patience is wearing out. Lonnie feels torn between the man she knows she must let go and the man who offers her a bright future. Will these three sort out their differences and come to an understanding? Or will they trust that God has a plan for each of them through the trials ahead? Or will past mistakes catch up to them, stirring up trouble too overwhelming to overcome?

Although I was sad to learn My Hope is Found would be the last novel in Joanne Bischof’s debut trilogy, I must admit I couldn’t wait to find out what happened to Lonnie and Gideon and Toby, after having fallen in love with them in Be Still My Soul and Though My Heart is Torn. My only worry was if this tale of lost love and looming mistakes could possibly come to a satisfying conclusion. If I say whether or not I was satisfied by the end of the story, I might give away what happened. So, I suppose that means you’ll just have to grab a copy and read it to find out for yourself what transpired for Gideon, Lonnie and Toby. I suggest you begin with Be Still My Soul, and read the entire trilogy in order to get the full picture of where these characters started. Their journey is a powerful one, filled with trials that remind us of our humanity and need for saving. It makes us consider where we came from, what it took to get where we are now, and where we’re headed on our life journeys. Keep a notebook handy to jot down the things that come to mind about your own journey as you read about Lonnie’s. God might just meet you in the chapters of these books.

As for the author, JoanneBischof is a new favorite of mine. The subtle sweetness woven through the plot and characters—particularly the supporting characters of Jebediah and Elsie—touches the heart and moistens the eyes. The reminders to look for joy in our pain came easily as the story unfolded. What’s next for this author? I’m not sure yet, but I can hardly wait to see. It’s sure to be great!

An ending? A beginning? How does the story conclude? We’ve waited for what seems like forever to find out what happens between Gideon and Lonnie. What sheer torture it has been, not knowing the fate that awaits these two wonderful characters.
Gideon and Lonnie? Lonnie and Toby? Gideon and Cassie? Oh, the suspense!

I had the privilege of receiving an ARC of My Hope is Found and I read it practically in one day….I waited long enough and just had to know everything NOW. Was I happy, disappointed, elated, angry? All valid questions, which deserve answers.
Happy? No matter what happens in a storyline that was penned by Joanne Bischof, you always walk away happy. She has a way of bringing you into the story, making you a part of the characters lives. How can that not make you happy?
Disappointed? Let me tell you, I can be reading one chapter and be smiling so much and then…BAM…knocked off my feet. You never know what each new chapter holds….makes for great reading, so NO, I was not disappointed.
Elated? The dictionary defines elation as: a feeling or state of great joy or pride….that being said, after finishing My Hope is Found, I was totally proud of Joanne Bischof for what she had accomplished in this series. Her writing always brings joy to my life…no matter the outcome of the stories.
Angry? Now, that’s a loaded question! Did this final book make me angry? I can tell you this much, there was some anger and frustration…let’s just leave it at that.

I am looking forward to more books by Joanne Bischof. She is a writer who truly shines when it comes to bringing God’s grace and love into her stories. She is an author who takes the time to get to know and listen to her readers. If you haven’t read the Cadence of Grace series, I highly recommend it! I can truly see this as a movie series! Janette Oke move over…here comes Joanne Bischof!

Even though I was given a copy of this book, I was under no obligation to write a positive review.

Last month, my husband and I drove through the mountains in Virginia on our way to Tennessee and I couldn't get Lonnie and Gideon out of my mind. I'd read the first two books in this series earlier in the year and I was left in limbo as to how things were going to end for them.

When I finally received an advance reading copy of My Hope is Found, the third book in the Cadence of Grace series, I hesitated to start reading it because I wasn't sure I wanted to hurt again. The first two books wrecked me in a good way and I ignored my real life to get through them. I was an emotional mess, and part of me didn't want to go there. (Disclaimer: I received a free copy of the book from the author in exchange for my review.)

But I went there, and in a span of 8 hours, off and on, I finished the story of Lonnie and Gideon. And oh. my. word. I can't--and won't--give too much away, but here's what I can say: this story is full of emotion. The ache of longing. The fear of losing. The pain of letting go. I felt it all, and even though I didn't cry as much as I did with book 2, I was still moved.

I have appreciated Bischof's willingness to travel the hard road with her characters. As in life, there are no guarantees that things will work out as they have planned (or as we as readers might want!) but there is hope that things work out for good.

If I had an official list of all-time favorite books, this series would be on it, and it would be near the top. Joanne Bischof has created a romance to rival the best classic love stories. I highly recommend this series, but a warning: if you start with the first book, have the next two on hand because you're not going to want to wait to finish it. Also, stock up on tissue and whatever comfort food or drink you need to soothe the pain. You'll need it.

“Everything was tangled. All her hopes and dreams knotted with the past.” (140)

In this third and final installment of The Cadence of Grace series, My Hope is Found, Gideon and Lonnie’s love story comes to a satisfying conclusion.

This book opens with Gideon making his return to Lonnie, while at the same time, Lonnie is trying to move forward with her life without Gideon. Right from the beginning, it is evident that this journey will be one of emotional ups and downs.

In Gideon’s absence, Lonnie has been getting to know Toby, the Scottish reverend who has become an important person in her life. On the eve of Gideon’s return, Toby proposes marriage and a future. As Lonnie gives her heart to Toby, she still needs to heal from the pain of losing Gideon, only to find him on her doorstep.

Talk about emotional turmoil! These characters endure so much hurt and pain as they try to work through their emotions and make the right choices. Both Gideon and Toby love Lonnie and want her to be a part of their lives, but they also know Lonnie has to make that decision herself; neither one of them can make it for her.

I grew rather fond of Toby myself. He was a man of honor and integrity. He loved Lonnie with all his heart and had such a quiet, gentle spirit. He always treated Lonnie with kindness and understanding.

Who will Lonnie choose? You would think this is an easy question to answer, but as things get more complicated, it is hard to not go back and forth between the two men. Toby or Gideon?

I was so glad when this much-anticipated conclusion to Joanne Bischof's debut series came in the mail.

I dropped the books I was reading (yes, I read multiple at a time) and read this one. But I read this one alone (as in, I didn't flip flop back and forth between other books). I loved it that much.

A niggle of worry bothered me as I began. After months anticipating the finale to this love story, I wondered if it wouldn't go my way, if all would turn toward a happily-ever-after at last. Well, I won't give the ending away, but...

I wasn't disappointed in the least. This is a beautiful finish to a series that's touched my heart. Rarely does a heroine become a friend like Lonnie, but her story inspires too much for readers not to fall in love with it.

What I Didn't Like As Much

I admit, I read it slowly, though, sometimes to savor, and sometimes because pain was on the pages and I thought I'd cry if I went on. Hearts are hurting and lives will never be the same, yet God is good and His love never lets us go. That's the story of the Cadence of Grace series and especially of My Hope is Found.

And really, even though I didn't like having to put it down sometimes, I think that means it's heart-piercing in a good way.

Why I Recommend This Book

Readers of historical fiction who, like me, love plunging into another century where simpler times but just-as-complex lives abound should scoop up this final installment of the Cadence of Grace series. A story that will echo in your soul, Lonnie and Gideon's love will inspire because
even when souls are restless and hearts are torn, hope really can be found.

Sometimes sequels are somehow diminished in quality or impact by the last few chapters or scenes. Not so in this very important final book that weaves together the intricate melodies-to borrow the metaphor-to complete The Cadence of Grace series. Not only does Bischof deliver a satisfying conclusion, answering impossible questions raised in the first two books, she makes the final segment of the journey compelling, challenging, and rewarding for both the characters as well as her readers. From her obviously detailed and exhaustive research to accurately describe the Appalachian mountain setting, to the historical laws that defined and determined the outcome, the author's use of the day-to-day chores of the era pull the reader into a world where lives were close to the earth, and hardscrabble, where folks lived their faith fully, and loved their families through thick and thin. I loved reading about the tough yet fun-loving people who farmed, made their own soap, and lived daily on the fruits of their own labors while meeting life's challenges head on, seeking God's comfort and guidance, forgiveness and mercy. The Cadence of Grace series resonated with me from the first Christy-nominated, "Be Still My Soul" through "Though My Heart is Torn" until the very last tear-filled happily-ever-after-scene of "My Hope is Found." Totally recommended to anyone who loves historical romance, a story well told, lyrical prose, and a journey through sin to redemption.

This is the book I've been waiting for - and, oh! - was it ever worth it! I had a lump in my throat all the way through, aching for everyone involved. The suspense built like a head-on collision in slow motion. I won't spoil your read, but the resolution is perfect!

This entire series made me think - don't you love books that do that? - about the kindness of strangers. Lonnie and Gideon received meals, a place to stay, employment and training, a ride, counsel, and medical care from good Samaritans. What a great example for all of us, to keep an eye out for the homeless, needy, couples in conflict. The Bennetts were their foremost helpers. While they both loved unconditionally, Elsie was sweet and Jebediah was spice. His tough love, wisdom, and holy anger changed Gideon's life. I want to be just like Jeb when I grow up… except for the whiskers!

I read this entire series, though I am one of the few people who didn't love it. I guess I got hooked by the teaser at the back of the first novel, leading into the second. I was hoping it would get better but it never did for me. The bottom line was that the plot was just too contrived. I found it really hard to believe that the common sense of keeping a marriage together where a child was involved was not seen as obvious, especially in the era in which it was to have taken place. The love story between Toby and Lonnie was not well developed and so made it hard to care about him. I enjoyed his relationship to Gideon more actually.

That said, I thought the writing style was good. I also liked the progression of Gideon's faith journey.

Ahhh, a very happy ending indeed. What a beautiful series, Joanne Bischof. Well done. This series had so many ups and downs. I was pulled in and didn't want to let go. In this final story, My Hope is Found, all of Lonnie and Gideon's struggles come to an end. It's a story filled with submission, grace, and healing. I don't want to give the ending away, but suffice it to say, this is one you won't want to put down. (I think I might have said that about all three of them in the series) Very much looking forward to what Ms. Bischof has for us next.

Joanne Bischof ~ Book 3, My Hope Is Found ~ Cadence of Grace series, ©2013

My brethren, count it all joy when you fall
into various trials, knowing that the testing
of your faith produces patience.
--James 1:2-3

Fancy Gap, Virginia, 1902 ~ Lonnie
What do you do when your life goes ahead and your heart stays behind to the love you meant to stay? When I look into my son's eyes I still see his father. As the leaves fall, crushing beneath my feet, the crispness of the autumn air brings memories of you. I wear your jacket with the collar pulled up but the fragrance of you is blending and I cannot find it, nor the clearness of my image of you. My days enter another as I put away the garden for the upcoming snows of winter. Winter of my heart, and nearness of your memory. It has already begun to sleet, icy tendrils amid the flowers.

Jebediah and Elsie Bennett have sheltered me since the first day Jebediah met Gideon and me while we were passing in the nearby woods ~ so long ago it seems. Two autumns ago. And now, little Jacob and my young sister, Addie, as she returned with me those long ago days that Gideon stayed behind. Family. The Bennetts are home to us. Music to my soul as the melody keeps me stable and our Lord beckons me to come and rest. So peaceful, and yet longing; longing for the day the hurt escapes me and I can feel clarity again.

Reverend Toby McKee, comes to visit and helps Jebediah with chores Gideon used to do. He is the Scottish reverend filling in at Fancy Gap when Reverend Gardner, from back home at Rocky Point, returns there for a time. Invited to stay to eat supper with us, Toby is welcomed by baby Jacob crawling to him and six-year-old Addie telling him she is so happy he came. He is a comfortable friend we look forward to seeing.

I am on my way home! I can hardly wait to see Lonnie and pull her and my little son Jacob into my arms. Will he remember me? I have his little cap I carry in my pocket. I can still remember his baby smell ~ the sweetness. And Lonnie, has she hidden me far away in her thoughts? Cassie has released me and sent the annulment papers with the circuit rider. I am on my way to the courthouse at Stuart to have the confirmation and proof to show Lonnie when I get to Fancy Gap, and home.

The judge is leaving for the day when I arrive. I go back in the morning. He tells me to return in a month's time, while it is resolved. Tal is in town, my former boss at the orchard, and brings me home with him to help with grafting he is beginning to expand his variety of apples. He gives me a bundle to begin our own orchard at Bennetts' farm.

Thirty days is up! I am going back to see Judge Monroe. He tells me he has sent an affidavit to be signed by Cassie regarding consummation, and has not heard back from her.

Gideon tried to wrap his mind around the legal phrasings. As if sensing it, the Judge leaned forward. "Basically, the affidavit that I sent to Miss Allan, confirming that her testimony matches your own, simply needs to be signed and returned."
--My Hope Is Found, 98

The Judge tells me to go home. He will send the final papers in the mail to Jebediah's address at the post office in Mount Airy.

As I was reading My Hope Is Found, the final book in the trilogy, I was thinking of the author and how hard it would be to write with the emotion and heart-rendering turmoil of the characters. Such depth of perception and what each experienced. The Bennetts in their care and love for Lonnie and the children, their respect and position with Gideon, the hope of Toby McKee for a church and his drawing toward Lonnie and the children. All of them releasing their hopes to the Lord for His direction in their lives. Such a strong story with grace interwoven.

Lonnie Sawyer has just reached the point where she can move on. Or at least she hopes to. The man she loves, the father of her son, has a new life and she wants him to be happy. But she can't write Gideon out of her heart very easily. Even with the attention of handsome young preacher Toby McKee. Hoping to put her past behind her, she accepts Toby's proposal. For Gideon's part, though he is married to another, his heart yearns for the soft-spoken woman who stole his heart. When God in His mercy offers Gideon a chance to go home, he takes it - with Cassie's blessing. Yet he's unprepared for what lies in store for him. Will Gideon find his faith strengthened or shattered? Will he learn that "letting go can be a harder way to love than holding on?" Who will Lonnie choose?

Sighs. I loved this book. I first met Gideon & Lonnie in Be Still My Soul. Their story made me cry. It made my heart ache for this couple. And just when I thought that they had a chance of happily-ever-after, their world was shaken deeply in Though My Heart Is Torn. I really wanted to hate Cassie in that book. But, I found I couldn't. So needless to say, when I found out that the author was looking for people to help promote the third book in this series, I was thrilled to be a part of her team. I've been asked not to give away secrets, and I'll try not to divulge any.

While I've had this book since sometime in August, and have actually had it finished since sometime in September, I decided to wait and write my review closer to the book's release date, which is Tuesday October 15, 2013.

Yes this book made me cry. It's a breath-taking conclusion to the story that began in Be Still My Soul. I've been privileged to watch Lonnie and Gideon grow in their faith. I wanted them to be together someway, somehow. Yet the depth of the other characters, Toby, Cassie, Elsie, Jeremiah, only made me love this series more. I can't hate Lonnie for accepting Toby's proposal. She needed to move on with her life. Yet I can't help feeling hurt too. Not that she had to move on, but that my happily-ever-after was in danger. I have to say that each of the major characters - Lonnie, Gideon, Toby, and Cassie all had to learn the hard lesson that Gideon discovers early in the story. It's that letting go is a harder way to love than holding on. Each character had to come to the point where they let go of their own wants and truly surrendered their hearts.

This type of book is what I loved about the classic Karen Kingsbury books, the Francine Rivers books, and oh so many others. If you haven't yet gotten a copy of books one and two in the Cadence of Grace series, run to your nearest bookstore, online store, library, or somewhere to pick up copies. Then go out an purchase this conclusion. It is That good! This is one series of books that I will keep to revisit over and over.

I received an advance paperback copy for free from the author for the purpose of reviewing and promoting. My thoughts and opinions are my own.

Recommended to fans of Karen Kingsbury, Francine Rivers, Laura Frantz, Catherine Marshall's Christy, historical fiction, drama

"The Cadence of Grace Series" from author Joanne Bischof is emotionally rich, spiritually rewarding, and exquisitely written. Ms. Bischof is a masterful storyteller, often leading the reader in an unexpected direction. She has the rare ability to convey powerful emotion with a delicate, deft touch. Book three in her series, "My Hope is Found", brings full circle the love story of Lonnie Sawyer and Gideon O'Riley. Life in the Blue Ridge Mountains in the early twentieth century was often one of poverty and hardship. Old traditions held fast as the outside world rolled forward. Lonnie and Gideon were brought together in a forced marriage, one that Gideon desperately wanted to avoid. Nonetheless, he and Lonnie became man and wife, and their journey together began. Leaving behind their home area so that Gideon could find work, they began an arduous trek faced with many obstacles. Finally, they were given shelter and sustenance from a kind older couple, Elsie and Jeb Bennett. Their time with the Bennetts was one of hard work and personal growth, with the Bennetts offering their hearts as well as their home. Gideon and Lonnie fell deeply in love and were blessed with a son, Jacob. Just as their lives seem to be on the right course, word comes that Gideon is still married to his first wife, Cassie, a wife that Lonnie had not known existed. Gideon had been wild and reckless in his youth, but he thought that his brief first marriage had been annulled. Stunned to learn that he is not legally married to Lonnie, they are both devastated when he is ordered by the court to return to Cassie. When Cassie finally agrees to release Gideon and grant him an annulment, he is overjoyed and begins his final journey home. However, as with every step in his life's path, there are side trails, and he must bide his time until the courts will hear his case. Before heading to Lonnie and Jacob, he goes back to work for an old friend in his apple orchard, and when at last he can head to the Bennett's farm, he takes with him young apple trees to begin his own orchard. In Gideon's absence, Lonnie has been befriended by a kind and handsome young minister, Scotsman Toby McKee. Toby loves Lonnie, and she is very fond of him, knowing that he would be a good husband and father. Lonnie accepts Toby's proposal shortly before Gideon arrives at the farm, and Gideon faces another spiritual challenge. He must learn what his newfound faith really means, putting the welfare and needs of those loves before his own, and placing his prayers for the future in the hands of the Lord. After Gideon and Toby have a physical altercation, Jeb declares that they must work together to plant the apple orchard. As the two men labor side-by-side, they get to know one another, and a grudging admiration is formed between them. As Gideon waits for the final court decree that will free him to marry Lonnie, she must decide which man will share her life and raise her son. This a highly recommended series. Read the first two books, "Be Still My Soul", and "Though My Heart is Torn", and then read "My Hope is Found". You will be so richly rewarded as a reader.

I was so excited when I saw ‘My Hope is Found’ up for review. I couldn’t click the review button quick enough, as if they were going to run out of review copies then and there. Joanne’s last book in the series, ‘Though My Heart is Torn’, left fingernail marks on my Kindle, as I was not expecting that book to come to an end when it did. I should have expected as much, from reading the first book. You come so glued to the story that you forget every story has to end some time, and of course you are going to be left hanging at the most heart tugging moment.

I jumped on this story almost the instant it was in my hands. I needed to find out how Lonnie and Gideon’s situation was going to resolve itself. The last book left off with Gideon as he was released from his marriage with Cassie, with her wishes that he return home to his family. You almost want to scream because you just came to terms with Lonnie’s settling into life without Gideon, especially with the new love interest in her life, the young reverend Toby McKee. Lonnie may have been struggling with her feelings for Toby, but you can feel the beatings of Toby’s heart. You see his heart for God and, though it hurts, you find yourself rooting for him. But God works in mysterious ways, as does this writer, and you know you have a lot to look forward to in the next book.

Now onto ‘My Hope is Found’ and you are dying to see where all this is going. Of course, Joanne isn’t going to give in that quickly, as in the first couple chapters,. You are asking for an all nighter with this book (just to warn you). As the Amazon review already tells you, Gideon does in fact return home, but his return home comes with a huge smack in the face, as his worst fears are realized. The love of his life has not only moved on, but she has moved on with someone else. Gideon is left with only a prayer, but will his prayer be for the desires of his heart, or will his prayer be for his family’s happiness and well-being. By doing so he is forced to really look at God for the first time, and when he does he finds the answer he was looking for…even if it’s not the one he wanted to hear. Now, I only feel comfortable revealing as much, but I can say that this was one of the first books that has ever torn my heart in two places.

Joanne has yet again done a daring good job. I don’t know that many writers have the guts that she has to write such a love story in a historical christian, and twist the story the way she did. Most want to jump straight to pleasing the readers, by giving it the most desired or direct ending, so as to leave everyone crying “Awwww!” by the end of the book. I will tell you now though, that is not this story. She will toy with your emotions, she will twist your heart this way and that, and she will leave your head spinning, but she will not disappoint you. I am so glad as to have started this series, and am sad to see it come to an end. Thank you Joanne for such a wonderful journey, and for showing us that God is there for us, even when we feel undeserving of his love.

Gideon O'Riley gets the go home free card from Cassie but he makes a stop at the courthouse in Stuart, Virginia to make sure the annulment will go through without any problems. When he manages to see the judge, he is insistent that he needs to talk to Cassie in person and Gideon should go on and he will be in touch with him as soon as things are finalized.

Lonnie has finally started to move on with her life and finds herself falling in love with Toby McKee, a young reverend that is finding himself falling in love with Lonnie. She fights her feelings as long as she can and when Toby finally proposes to her she accepts. After all the happy tears everyone at the Bennett house sits down to eat as there is a knock on the door. Lonnie opens the door to see Gideon standing there.

As Gideon, Lonnie and Toby try to get along while waiting to hear from the judge, things get tense. The night the letter arrives it doesn't bring good news, but it isn't hopeless either. Gideon is so on edge that he and Toby get into a fist fight. Jebediah forces the two men to work together and neither one is allowed in the house any longer. The tension continues but they do learn to work together. Lonnie has the hardest time trying to decide which man she loves the most. Gideon can see that she loves Toby and Toby can see that she loves Gideon, one will have to give in and leave or they will have to continue going on the way things are until Lonnie can make a decision.

Joanne did a great job on this series and this last book had my eyes watering sometimes. I didn't know what was going to happen, for sure until the very end, I kept going back and forth between the two men. She did a good job of keeping a secret. I also appreciated the faith she included in the book, it isn't easy to always keep your faith strong or change from a life without faith and be willing to give up someone you love if that is what you feel God wants you to do because that is what is best for that person.

Is this the end for Gideon and Lonnie?

My Hope Is Found, the third book in Joanne Bischof's series The Cadence of Grace, did not disappoint. Continuing with the story of Gideon and Lonnie, a love triangle emerges in the Appalachian mountains which is not resolved until the end.

Picking up at the end of Though My Heart Is Torn, Gideon is heading back to his beloved Lonnie and Jacob. Unfortunately, several setbacks keep him from arriving at his destination quickly and even once he has arrived the paperwork indicating his freedom to marry Lonnie has not been completed. While Gideon is gone, Lonnie struggles to begin a new life for herself, her son Jacob, and young sister Addie. An eligible bachelor introduced in the previous book finds himself smitten with Lonnie and declares his intentions. When Gideon re-appears, the two young men find themselves both vying for Lonnie's hand and tangling with each other as well. Fortunately , Jedediah Bennett intervenes forcing them to resolve their differences.

Bischof does a good job of developing all three of characters in this triangle. Each one struggles with a variety of self-doubts and concerns over past choices and future decisions as they seek to both follow God and find everlasting love. Gideon in particular experiences difficulty resolving his feelings of love for Lonnie and his knowledge of the respectability and good name her other suitor would provide for his young family.

My Hope Is Found is highly recommended for anyone who enjoys gentle frontier romances. Libraries will definitely want to stock this series and the included reader's guide makes it perfect for book groups. I would highly recommend reading all three of these books in sequence as the story line develops in each book. I hope that Bischof continues this story. I would be interested in knowing what the future holds in store for Cassie and Toby as well as enjoying more tales of Lonnie and Gideon's sure to be growing family. Readers may learn more about this book and others in the series by listening to a podcast with author Joanne Bischof and by reading the first chapter of each title.

From the publisher:
After finally finding love with his sweet bride Lonnie, Gideon’s heart was torn when a woman from his past claimed to be his true and rightful wife, forcing him away from his family. God’s merciful hand saw Gideon through the heartache, and with Cassie’s blessing, he is able to return home. Though his journey back through the Blue Ridge Mountains will hold a trial he never anticipated.

Meanwhile, Lonnie determines to seal off her heart from Gideon, convinced he is lost to her forever. Strengthening her resolve to move on is the fondness she has for the handsome Scotsman, Toby McKee—the young reverend she has come to care deeply for.

_________

This beautifully crafted book teaches what selfless love is. Each and every character will wrestle with what selfless love is and will learn to offer it. Cassie, Gideon, Toby, and Lonnie will all continue to struggle and grow in this book.

Joanne Bischof weaves a tale of relationships with others but most of all God. She doesn't write in "preachy" way but lets the story speak for itself and the God who speaks to the hearts of the characters. I like that each character has their own moments with God, whether it is what they want to do or not, they hear and heed His voice.

When I finished with the book I felt as if I had walked the mountains with each of the characters and come to know them better. Every reader has their favorite characters but Joanne Bischof writes the characters in such a way that you cannot help but root for each of them in their own way. To me the ending was less of a rowdy cheer, but more of the sweet peace that hope was found in selfless love.

I highly recommend reading the whole series. Each book builds on each other, not only the story, but also that of what God is teaching them. Each book is appropriately titled and really speak to the message of the book.

This series will be a spiritual blessing to those who read it.

Soul Stirring Romance!

In My Hope Is Found, author Joanne Bischof has penned another powerful, emotionally charged novel of a beautiful, unpretentious woman raised in the Appalachians, and the two honorable men who love her.

Gideon has been granted a reprieve...from Cassie and God. At long last he is returning home to the love of his life, Lonnie, and their baby boy. Once forced to marry Cassie as a result of sin, he realized after marrying Lonnie that their marriage was no longer valid, as Cassie had failed to annul her marriage to Gideon. Seeing the error of her ways, however, Cassie sets him free to return home, but Gideon's sin and past life hauntingly follow him and he finds freedom is not to be his after all.

He must wait months to straighten out his affairs with Cassie so that he is free to remarry Lonnie, and when he returns home he finds Lonnie engaged to a handsome Scottish preacher. Heartbroken Lonnie is yearning for joy in her life once again, willing to put Gideon and the past behind her, and the handsome, kind, Preacher Toby McKee is just the man to help her do that. Gideon must face the midnight hour of his soul as he realizes that Toby would be the best man for Lonnie...will he give her up and let God heal his heart? What is Lonnie to do as she realizes she is in love with two handsome men who will do anything to be with her?

This is a lovely, heartrending tale of sin's consequences, redemption, and unrequited love, that will keep you flipping those pages well into the night! My heart was gripped with emotions throughout---frustration, heartache, happiness, laughter and tears...and I grew to love Toby as well as Gideon---almost. Lonnie had trouble picking which guy she wanted to be with, and so did I! Ms. Bischof, a master at storytelling and twists and turns, honestly had me not knowing until the very end how this story was going to play out! I highly recommend reading the whole series as each story continues where the other left off. You won't want to miss out on one book in this most powerful series...verra nicely done, Joanne Bischof!

MY HOPE IS FOUND is the third book in The Candence of Grace series. Readers will want to read these books in order as they don’t stand alone. The first book in the series is Be Still My Soul, then Though My Hope is Torn. These poor characters have been through everything imaginable and then some. I didn’t like Gideon at all in the first book. By the second book I liked him somewhat but my heart broke for him. And in this third book I wanted to cry. He’d grown from being an immature boy to a mature man. This book wrapped the series up nicely and made me feel better about reading it. I’d recommend reading these books in order, and back to back.

If you like fiction that will take your emotions all over the board, then Joanne Bischof is one to consider. Discussion questions and author’s notes are included at the end of the book. $14.99. 352 pages.

Gideon and Lonnie have finally found love together, and life seems to have finally settled down for their little family. But when a woman in Gideon's past comes back into his life, claiming she is his rightful wife, he has no choice but to return to Cassie. When Cassie finally gives him her blessing to return to the woman he aches to hold, Gideon embarks on a journey through the Blue Ridge Mountains to return to his true wife and son.

Lonnie is determined to forget Gideon and move on with her life. A dashing Scotsman and Reverend by the name of Toby McKee is paying her court, and she has a mind to move on from the constant pain Gideon is perpetually causing her. So when Gideon returns to find her betrothed to another, Gideon must trust that the One who brought them together in the first place can do it again. But is Gideon too late this time? Is Lonnie and their son lost to him forever?

There is just something about the long awaited love between Gideon and Lonnie. The way he held on to a ribbon that was hers as a keepsake just struck me as such a helpless gesture of the futility of his situation. I wanted to do something to help them all, but naturally, the story is already written and my part is to settle down and read where their journeys take them. I have no idea why I was completely arrested by this trilogy. Maybe it's the parallel to this verse in Proverbs 13:12; "Hope deferred maketh the heart sick, but when the desire cometh, it is a tree of life." I read a lot, and I do read a lot of romances. But Bischof strikes in the most subtle of ways, and weaves a tale that will stay with you for the rest of your life. Unforgettable, remarkable and absolutely extraordinary.

My Hope Is Found
By: Joanne Bischof

I absolutely loved this book by Joanne Bischof! She has found her niche in writing Appalachian romance. This is the third book in The Cadence of Grace series. It is better to read these in order so you can follow what is going on with the characters and what issues they have faced.

In book two, Cassie had released Gideon from his marriage to her. He is now on his way back to Lonnie and his son Jacob. I was so hooked on this book I couldn’t even read the last few pages first to see what happened, which is saying a lot for me! I knew how I thought the story should go, but I wasn’t sure if that was going to happen or not. Joanne Bischof filled this story with romance, suspense, and peace and hope only found in God.

Gideon has doubts about his life, his self worth, and his goodness for Lonnie. When he reads the Bible, he finds Peter doubted also. But God’s redemptive love doesn’t stop for doubts, fears, or feelings of unworthiness. His love is for everyone to partake. And once you do, peace and hope abound.

Toby and Gideon are vying for Lonnie’s heart. Only one has it, but which one is it? Toby and Gideon are like two roosters in the henhouse. Their antics will have you laughing out loud and cringing in sympathy. Which one do you think deserves her heart? You’ll have to read the book to find out, but you’ll be glad you did. All the twists and turns in this story will have you turning the page, pulling you into the story and the heart-wrenching emotions. Can’t wait to see what Joanne Bischof has up her sleeve next! She is the author to watch!
