The next exciting volume of Archie's top-selling Sonic Select series continues with Sonic's high-flying co-star, Tails! When Tails heads off on his first-ever solo adventure, his travels take him under the sea, up in the air, and down to the land of Downunda! Featuring the debut of several new heroic teams, including the Forty Fathom and Downunda Freedom Fighters.
Sonic Select 8 includes the hard to find, sought-after Tails miniseries issues #1-3.
This graphic novel collects a load of Tails-centric stories together and is largely more light-hearted than the very melodramatic stuff I dislike about Archie Sonic. On the whole I liked the more kid-friendly approach as it feels more in line with what the franchise is about: a bunch of freedom fighting animals trying to restore peace in a world ravaged by Dr Robotnik’s attempts to enslave its populace in robots. Unfortunately with the stories being taken from side-stories and not mainline issues they feel a bit inconsequential. There’s some absolutely bizarre stuff in here too: a reference to the Hindenburg disaster? Tails turning into a gigantic buff version of himself? It’s certainly not a boring read even if the stories feel a little hollow.
Sonic Select 8 is all about Tails! The first part covers the 1990s mini-series (and lead-ups) which was the first time the comics attempted to give Tails a personality. He runs off to save the world in his tiny submarine and gets beaten up a lot because he's a kid. Readers meet the Forty Fathom Freedom Fights (a bunch of fish) and the Downunda Freedom Fighters which... are basically just different animal versions of the Knothole Freedom Fighters. But super colourful! There's also a new villain called Crocbot and he introduces the idea of a sub villain in the series which becomes interesting way later. The part that kinda sucks is the whole "Tails is the chosen one" narrative that starts here and ends OVER A HUNDRED ISSUES LATER.
Speaking of, readers get to flash forever to issues 149-150 where Zonic needs Tails to defeat Mammoth Mogul. Tails does so by combining with EVERY OTHER TAILS that EVER was and becoming a MASSIVE MUSCLED FOX OF DOOM. It's the weirdest, creepiest thing in a Sonic comic. Titan Tails ends up the most powerful person in the universe, but he gives it all up cause he's nice. And thank god we can stop with the chosen Tails arc because that was unnecessary and anti-climatic.
I would have given the series a three star rating for the first part, but TITAN TAILS knocked it back down. Stupid story line, terrible art, and NIGHTMARE FUEL.
