The Citizen Lobbyist: A How-to Manual for Making Your Voice Heard in Government

Rate this book
A handbook for anyone who wants to learn about how to be active in local, state, and federal government, The Citizen Lobbyist shows how to have a voice in creating public policy. More citizen involvement is needed in our government processes to ensure the voices of the people are heard over the money of paid lobbyists, unions, and coalitions, both in Washington, DC, and in state capitals across the country. All too often, public officials seem removed from the people who hired them to be their representatives and fail to work on their behalf. This book gives a step-by-step plan on how to lobby elected officials about the issues you care about, offers information on how to plan a lobbying meeting for individuals and groups, and provides sample lobbying worksheets and resources to assist with finding legislative information and history. It is your go-to reference for being a grassroots activist and citizen lobbyist.

I enjoyed this! I have never been interested in participating in the government beyond jury duty, taxes, and voting but lately I feel the need to speak out and communicate with those who represent me and this book is a useful tool to help me take on this active role. Easy to comprehend and there are more resources in the book to help you after you have finished reading.

Don't let the size fool you, this pocket sized guide to lobbying is exactly what you'll need to feel confident approaching the "powers that be" in your community. Whether you're a budding teen voter, just getting your feet wet in the political world, or a seasoned veteran with decades of political awareness, with this book's clear and practical information you'll feel empowered to make a lasting difference in your political surroundings. The foreword makes mention of using the margins for jotting notes, and I am happy to report that my copy already has many pages with this occurring, so do plan to read this with a pencil handy!

I've connected with local, regional, state, and federal officials for a myriad of issues throughout my adult life, and I only wish I'd had this book from the beginning. Easy to read but packed with information, this book is a straightforward, no nonsense, certainly nonpartisan (and incredibly well done with that, I might add) guide. With plenty of general AND specific information about what to do and not to do plus what to expect and why when connecting with your elected leadership-not only is this fantastic information, it's presented clearly and in terms we non-lawyers can wrap our heads around. Precise without being legalistic, accurate and straightforward without being tedious, patient without any pretension, this guide will help anyone who wants to get involved in connecting with their government leaders, regardless of the topic at hand. I *HIGHLY* recommend this book as THE "How-to Manual for Making Your Voice Heard in Government" and encourage everyone to buy yours today.

Great how-to manual on making your voice heard to get more involved in the political process. As a beginner in the political world myself, this book offered a nice primer on the rules, tactics, and limits of lobbying.

Everyday American's have issues they want to raise, ensuring their elected officials (and regulators) hear those concerns, and hope to see actionable change on those issues. However, most people are ill-equipped to package those ideas, arguments, and solutions up in a way that makes a real impact. Sure yelling at the TV screen, flipping-off the radio while driving, or storming out of a pleasant-turned-political dinner party may make one feel like progress is being made, yet those actions obviously do not cause change. Even blogging, posting on social media, or voting are not enough to cause change. This book is about working on simple steps to take your interaction with government to the next level. I'm confident I'll read this one again.

Small book, big ideas...

Very concise and very practical advice about how to make the government work for you. Lobbying is a business, and even if you're doing it out of the goodness of your heart or a deep need to make the world a better place it still takes a commitment of time and resources. You might as well do it right to avoid wasting each of them.

The writing is spare and upbeat. this is a lean book. That's good, because this is one you want to keep on your Kindle, along with Alinsky's Rules for radicals as you start to make your way through the corridors of power.

Take it from me,advocating for something you believe in is not easy, but it can be extremely rewarding. It never pays to keep quiet, that just lets the loud obnoxious people go unchallenged.

A quick read that is packed with good information on how citizens can effectively make their voices heard by their representatives. I plan on putting these tips to good use soon. The US would be better off if all citizens performed their civic duties of holding their representatives accountable instead of feeling good after the national elections every four years.

A very informative tool that guides you through the process of getting your polical thoughts and wants across the the appropriate official. There are steps that I would have never thought to take that not only aid in your lobbing outcome but sound interesting to do all on their own. This should be given to everyone at the time that they register to vote.

A nice little book that does what it promises: gives an overview of how to be a citizen lobbyist.

I'm currently not planning to visit my statehouse in person, so little of the information is directly applicable, but perhaps that will change soon.
