I read this book ... rather, I heard it read, in the fourth grade, a chapter at a time, by the librarian at Josephine Wells Elementary School. I loved it then and have tried for years to find it. For some reason, it is a book that stands out from my childhood. Rereading it took me back to those hours in the library, transfixed as the librarian read to us. Do school librarians do that anymore?

It's a simple, sad, but hopeful story of a boy who is unhappy and the seemingly misfit dog that chooses him, the farm girl who helps him find his way, and the father who finally sees the light and returns to the country. Not great literature, just a simple boy and his dog story. I felt like a kid reading it again.

Wow. I bought this book used at a library book sale when I was in junior high. For a kid growing up in the suburbs of a university town, this book was a journey to another world. It is such a shame that the only copy I can find is $90! Pretty excellent reading for a 12 year old wanting a window into another culture and time, rural southern Georgia - especially, if that child loves dogs.

I loved this book in the 70s when I was a kid, but it hasn't held up over time at all. It's just a slightly more complicated Dick and Jane story, with about as much sense of place and character. And all the attendant race and class issues one would expect from a children's book published in 1950.

I read this book countless times as a child. It was one of five books passed down from my mom. I have never seen another copy!!!
