A sexy, funny and heartwarming adventure – curl up and enjoy this fabulous Quick Read from Kathy Lette
Kathy Lette divides her time between being a full time writer, demented mother (now there's a tautology) and trying to find a shopping trolley that doesn't have a clubbed wheel.
Kathy first achieved succés de scandale as a teenager with the novel Puberty Blues, now a major motion picture.
After several years as a singer with the Salami Sisters and a newspaper columnist in Sydney and New York (collected in the book "Hit and Ms") and as a television sitcom writer for Columbia Pictures in Los Angeles, her novels, "Puberty Blues" (1979) "Girls Night Out" (1988), "The Llama Parlour" (1991), "Foetal Attraction" (1993), "Mad Cows" (1996),"Altar Ego" (1998) "Nip'N'Tuck" (2001), "Dead Sexy" (2003) and "How To Kill Your Husband (and other handy household hints)" (2006) became international best-sellers. Kathy Lette's plays include "Grommits", "Wet Dreams", "Perfect Mismatch" and "I'm So Happy For You I Really Am".
She lives in London with her husband and two children and has just finished a stint as writer in Residence at London's Savoy Hotel.
Kathy says that the best thing about being a writer is that you get to work in your jammies all day, drink heavily on the job and have affairs and call it research! (Although her husband says he should have the affair as it would give her a better book!)
Anthea is a bossy control freak. She is the model of perfection. Good-looking, smart and engaged to lawyer, Rupert, an obnoxious egocentric snob. They are bound in their materialistic world. Younger sister, 'plain Jane', is understandably undermined, hare-brained with low-esteem. The sisters don't get on apart from each others nerves. Jane seeks a man. She hears that there is a mining town in Australia where the male:female ratio is 50:1. Off she goes and is soon engaged to rugged miner Jacko. Anthea is appalled. She travels to sort her sister out. The adventure takes off from the moment she arrives.
3⭐ = Average read. At first I thought that this Quick Read was a spoof, and after reading, I'm still not sure if it was meant to be serious or not. There was a fair bit of humour within and it was very easy to read. For a short story, it crammed in quite a lot and made the point that it needed to quite effectively. Ideal book if you want something quick, light and that isn't too taxing on the brain cells. Predictable but readable. 🙂
Top of the genre. A super satisfying short story with great characters, one of whom is the Australian outback. Add to that Lette’s sharp and intelligent sense of humor, and you get some of the most fun couple of hours you’ve had in a while.
I might be an odd 'man' out rating this chick-lit. I stumbled upon this quick read after some heavy philosophical (okay, it was actually a philosophy book) stuff. As it promises, it is a quick and funny read. You'd feel like you are reading a movie. Conversations between characters are witty and sarcastic (that I liked). The most interesting bit for me was that this book allows you to think beyond over your prejudices. (But why just three stars? To be consistent across genres. Within the genre, its top-rated).
Two sisters who are complete opposites - Anthea is slim, beautiful and has the perfect life with her fiancé. Jane has always felt like the ugly duckling in comparison. When Jane moves to the Australian outback, Anthea thinks this is another one of Jane’s crazy plans. But she starts to think she should take a walk on the wild side herself..
This book was short and sweet. There were some funny witty moments that I enjoyed. 3 🌟
Short, sweet and with a bite Some very entertaining and sometimes questionable "Australianisms" in this short and snappy sort of story. With some hard-hitting home truths thrown into the mixture, it became a very good read. What is ugly? Looks or Behaviour? The novel is fast paced enough to tell you.
I Picked this for a challenge for a readathon I am taking part in. The challenge was to read a book with pink in the cover, as it was also a 'quick read' I thought perfect it was a great choice. How wrong I was it was not for me at all. 🙄
This was a fun ‘quick read’ that was entirely OTT but funny and entertaining nonetheless. I’d like to read more like this between my longer, more thoughtful provoking undertakings of popular fiction and literature.
When her sister, Jane, decides to move to Australia in search of a husband, Anthea has no clue as to why. The sisters have never seen eye-to-eye, and Anthea tries to save Jane from her outback adventure, but perhaps she ends up taking a walk on the wild side herself.
This was a sweet little QuickRead I read in an evening. It’s a light, romantic chick-flick novel and I did quite enjoy it.
The characters were pretty nice, although I felt there could easily be a sequel or a longer novel in the works, as although the protagonist, Anthea, had amazing (and realistic) character development, there was room for more and I wanted to find out what happened further on. Jane, the secondary main, was also pretty nice, as just a nice person.
Something I really liked about the writing style was the fact that the writer changed the way you thought about the character. Another thing was the writing style wasn’t “dumbed down” – some writers, it seems, when they write QuickReads “dumb down” their style because QuickReads are designed for adults who don’t read that often. On the contrary, I had to ask my mum to explain a word or two! The only thing I didn’t like about the writing style was that I thought there would be humour in it, and except for a couple of times I didn’t really find it ha-ha funny more snort-out-of-my-nose funny. It didn’t live up to my expectations in that respect, but other than that I really enjoyed it.
The plot was ok, but I felt like too much was put into such a short space of time, and there was a part I felt should have been left out. It was quite refreshing to see that the heavier, not as attractive nor successful sister found her place, instead of being a cast off!
So over all, I did quite enjoy this little QuickRead, and I’ll look forward to reading more from the author in the future, should the opportunity arise!
This was the first time I had read anything from this author and I will definitely be reading more. These Quick Reads books are perfect for trying out new authors and I have enjoyed all that I have read. This story focus’ on two sisters, Jane and Anthea, whose parents have recently died and they have inherited a substantial amount between them. Jane decides to move to the Australian outback to try and find a husband and when she does, Anthea travels out to meet him. I absolutely loved The Australian descriptions when they got caught in the storm, it was very atmospheric!!
hmm where to start with this one? the beginning was good it got me wanting to read more - up until the tsunami point it just felt so unreal reading it I kept saying what?really? just felt so weird. I also hated Rupert he got on my nerves I wanted to slap him. the reason it got a 4 star was because the beginning and end was really good just not the tsunami bit! baring in mind I haven't read anything by this author but I will in future!
I really enjoyed this short book. A nice book, though rather full of stereotypical portrayals of the Aussie outback. A lot happened in a very short time, but it was a fun read!
