This is my first 'for dummies' book and I happened upon it whilst working in a book store that wasn't my usual branch, it turned out it was the only one available in the country so that was fate to me.

I'm young my partner is young, we're unmarried and a lot of people including myself would think it ridiculous that I would seek literary guidance for my relationship, but I had to try. So far I am the only one of the two of us that has read this and done most of the written work and put things into practise, and I think it's important to say it's beneficial even with just one of us reading it.

I understand his thought processes and actions in arguments a lot more and don't feel the need as much to retaliate or take things personally, I listen more and suggest his primary emotions. I've learnt about myself also and why I react the way I do and how it may be unhelpful and not a true representation of the emotions felt.

I hope my partner also reads it and we can do the necessary practises together, but I can't make him and I have still benefited from this book.

Read this with my fiance which first of all was silly because we have a very stable relationship and 0 of these problems were relevant to us. Good to note for the future I suppose. The amount of repetitiveness in this book is ridiculous. Really just repeating the same basic info over and over. But I will never forgot primary and secondary emotions!

This book taught me a lot about understanding what paying attention to you and your partners feelings and emotions can do to help meaningful communication, especially when tensions are running high.
