Opening line of the book:

Terrance Ramsey was married to an absolute bitch, and he couldn't have been happier about it.

What a great line! I can't gush enough about this series, so I shall just say - give it a go you won't be disappointed.

This is a great addition to the Elemental World. Set after the events of Building From Ashes, it's a brief look into the lives of Terry and Gemma.

We first met Terry and Gemma in the Elemental Mysteries series. Terry is the leader of the London vampires, and Gemma is his fiancé, and ‘daughter’ of Carwyn. They are together for political reasons - their match being both convenient and powerful.

But, behind the scenes, there is so much more to it than that.

“Terrance Ramsay was the last man in the world that Gemma Melcombe thought she should want for eternity.
And Terry knew he was the only man in the world she needed.”

The book starts shortly after Terry and Gemma are finally married, and is told from both of their POVs, which is fantastic, because, based on their previous appearances in the series, I actually wasn’t sure that I liked Gemma, who comes across as being really cold, and Terry seemed to be so quiet and withdrawn. I couldn’t have been more wrong.

“Terrance Ramsay was married to an absolute bitch, and he couldn’t have been happier about it.”

Terry is awesome!! He’s confident and strong, ruthless when he needs to be, but also beautifully tender. He’s also absolutely hilarious, and knows just how to handle Gemma and her moods. He constantly teases and riles her, loving her reactions, and it’s sensational! The reveal of Gemma’s backstory explains so much, and I can absolutely understand why she is the way she is. We also get some flashbacks to when they first met in the 1800s and later interactions, which show the dynamic between them over the years. So seeing the two of them coming to understand each other more, and let their feelings out was awesome.

There’s a whole lot of steamy time in this book – probably more than the full length novels of the series! And with the passion between them (even before the romance kicks off), that is definitely not a bad thing!

There’s a bit of political stuff going on with their allegiance to Spain in doubt, and further discoveries around the Elixir and clues to who is holding it. But primarily, it’s all about the love story, and I loved it!

“Say what you want, Gemma. Curse me and punch me if you will. I know you’re spitting mad, and that’s fine. But do not lie. There was nothing about our wedding that was a sham.”
She turned her head to meet his eyes. “Bullshit. You promised to lo—”
Terry leaned down and stopped her mouth with a furious kiss. Then he pulled back a fraction of an inch and whispered, “Nothing was a sham.”

I have given this novella a four-star rating, mainly because I was left wanting more. As a part of the Elemental World series, this book offers a deeper exploration into the lives of Terry and Gemma.

Terry is known for his shrewdness and roguish charm. He initially sought an alliance with Gemma for her influential connections and her family's prominence. Over time, his intentions shifted from mere strategic alignment to something more profound. Gemma, the daughter of Carwyn ap Bryn, possesses significant power in her own right; her family's reach extends across Ireland and around the world.

In his role as the overseer of London, Terry rules with Gemma's support. With many European city leaders encountering challenges to their rule, they remain vigilant against any threats to their authority. Amid these tensions, Terry decides that after ten years of engagement, it is time for them to wed. As they move forward with their wedding plans, ominous figures step out from the shadows, presenting potentially deadly dangers.

For newcomers to this universe, I strongly suggest starting with the Elemental Mysteries series to grasp the overarching story and become acquainted with the principal characters.

This series has endeared itself to me. The author achieves a remarkable balance among the characters and offers a captivating portrayal of vampires as elemental entities—integrated within nature rather than apart from it.

I first started this series online when Hunter had started posting the first couple chapters to her blog. One problem. I hate to read on a computer. When it is on my nook color I can change the lighting and so forth. Not so with my computer. (If you know of a way...help a sista out and let me know). Anywho, I started it, but after having twitchy eye from too much computer exposure, I ended up quitting it. Thankfully, Hunter came to my rescue and sent me an epub for review. And for that I thank her profusely.

What I loved about this novella? Oh just about everything. While on their honeymoon, Terry will do all he can to make Gemma see that what they share is so much more than a marriage of convenience or political arrangement. The longer they are out at sea, Terry can work on bringing down Gemma’s strong and powerful walls…walls that have been up for a very long time…walls that have kept her alive even longer. And seeing her fall for Terry and watching the relationship grow into something more was so amazingly beautiful.

Hunter is an absolute pro at giving us steamy, heart melting romance. We got it with Gio and B, Carwyn and Brigid, and now Terry and Gemma. And each one of their relationships is so utterly different…we never get them same story told to us. You can bet whatever she writes it is going to be phenomenal. I am always eager to jump into one of her books because she always gives us strong lead characters and such creative storylines.

I recommend this novella to anyone who has read Hunter's books and for those who haven't yet. Because even if you haven't read her other books, you won't be lost while reading this one. There will be some 'Ah ha' moments for you and other old characters are mentioned. But after finishing WATERLOCKED rather quickly I am now looking forward to the next novella in the series, BLOOD AND SAND. You will never go wrong with one of her books. Enough said.

I had convinced myself that I just didn't like this series quite as much as the Elemental Mysteries until I remembered this story.

I've said it before (concerning Hunter's Cambio Springs series), and I'll say it again: this woman has an amazing gift for writing compelling novellas.

We met Gemma and Terrance in the second or third book of the Elemental Mysteries, and were it not for the few hints that Gemma was more affected by Terrance than she let on, I would have been disappointed by her decision to marry him for reasons of business and/or convenience.

In Waterlocked, we see those hints come to fruition, and it is HOT. And sweet. And just plain wonderful.

Highly recommended.

My original review only gave this short novella three stars. I'm upping it a star this go round. It was entertaining and had a sweet love story about a couple that were supporting characters for the Elemental Mystery series. Here they have the starring role and they don't disappoint. Well recommended.

I really like this series. This novella was a short read but the characters were well written and the story fit perfectly into the world that Elizabeth Hunter created.

This novella was sweet. I ended up liking Gemma and Terry more than I thought I would! I love how all of these stories are tying together too, can't wait to get started on Blood and Sand next.

The novella length Waterlocked revists Hunter's world of elemental vampires, matching Earth vampire 'child' of Carwyn, Gemma, with Water vampire head of London, Terry. This story is a bit steamier than the rest of the books in the series, has some good action, and offers just a bit of information about the series' arc's conflict.

Even though Gemma and Terry are engaged and have known each other for a hundred years, Gemma is holding back and Terry is determined to give Gemma a push to win the eternal HEA that he wants - and which strikes terror into her immortal heart.

I enjoyed Waterlocked. I loved Terry but – and I hate to admit this – I had a hard time warming up to Gemma. Part of my problem might have been that I have been totally spoiled by the thorough exposition of the leading characters' back stories in Hunter's other books. So even though there is enough pathos to Gemma's history to understand a portion of why she holds her emotions so tightly – when clearly she is a passionate sensual person – I missed being able to experience the emotional depth of being 'in the moment' with her and 'seeing' her tragic loss. I really wanted a few flashbacks of the story that Gemma tells her brother.

And, actually I am greedy, while the novella did actually get the job done in the HEA department, I would have loved for Waterlocked to have been a full length book, because I really would have liked to have also seen a few more snippets of Gemma and Terry's hundred year 'courtship'.

Still I will take whatever Hunter has to offer, and I liked this quick trip to her Elemental Mysteries world and the sneak preview of Hunter's next full length novel in this series - which features another fascinating supporting character from the earilier books, Baojia - has me excited and impatient for his story.

ARC from the author release date week of 1/21

Mon avis en Français

My English review

Like for the original series, I always take a great pleasure in reading each new volume by Elizabeth Hunter. All the secondary characters are featured here and after Carwyn, we have now Gemma and Terrance.

This is a fairly short story but still quite complete. So we meet this couple who is engaged by arrangement and while Terrance loves her madly since their first meeting, it is far from being the case for Gemma. But hey, it must be said that she never thought too much about her feelings and she does not like what comes out when she does. However, even if she knew it would happen, Terry asks her to marry him to formalize things but it’s at that moment that our heroine chooses to disagree. Yet yes, she will marry him and perhaps understand later that her new husband is not so terrible than she wanted to think. She will face her feelings and understand that despite what she thought it is more than an arrangement. And while they find themselves on a boat in the middle of the ocean, our two heroes will face their past, will open to each other and face new dangers.

We can read it easily and quickly with as usual a few flashbacks and I really enjoyed learning a bit more about these two characters. All makes me really want to get into the second novel of the series.

For those who do not know that, the first novel in the original series “Hiddent Fire” is free as ebook so do not hesitate!

*4.5 star book and another Elizabeth Hunter book is added to my favorites shelf!*

Another excellent book in the Elemental World series! The only complaint I have -- it's just too darn short! Typically, I do not give 5 star ratings to novellas because there usually just isn't time to establish characters, plot and make it meaningful for the reader. In this case, I rounded up because I already know the back story of the plot about the Elixir, have met or heard of many of the supporting characters, and EH is just such a good writer, her books draw me in every time! Gemma and Terrance were minor characters in the previous Elemental Mysteries and Elemental World books. Really wasn't sure how much I'd like either of them, when I started reading this novella. Fell in love with both of them ! All of a sudden, the book ended just as they were getting started.

I really wish this book had been full length, or at least a little longer. But, the story (mystery of the Elixir and who is behind it) will continue with the last book in the EW series, Blood and Sand. I sure hope there is more Gem and Terry. What a fantastic couple -- strong, loyal, passionate, and definitely sexy! Hopefully all the awesome vampire couples, and some of the singles, will make an appearance as they solve the mystery and bring it all to a close.

Love love love this book! I actually didn't really like Gemma previously because of her and Gio's past, but I liked her so much more now, probably better than any of the past female characters in this world so far, except Tenzin of course. And then Terry was freaking amazing, literally.

They start off in this book as lovers for 15 years, engaged for 10, finally married, but Terry had loved and wanted Gemma for a 100 years. Gemma who is hundreds of years older than him, wanted him physically and then for politics, but he has always wanted more from her. I love their dynamic, and you hardly ever see the heroine being the one who is the very much older love interest. And I loved how someone as young as Terry who would have never stood a chance with someone like Gemma, eventually wormed his way into her heart, and the results of it were so sweet. And his reactions whenever she says she loves him or calls him "darling" is literally the cutest thing ever. Their romance, and Terry especially, is so swoon worthy and I couldn't get enough.

Overall, fantastic novella, and this actually may be my favorite romance in this world so far even though it was so short, and I wish we had more, but fantastic book!

Sweet and short. I always find it difficult to review novellas, because there is so little can say without going through the whole plot.

I've always wondered about Terry and Gemma because they are such an interesting tumultuous couple who no surface don't have anything in common, However, Waterlocked explores their differences and the roots of their unwilling fascination with each other.

It is especially difficult for Gemma. Terry is younger and pushier and hungrier for everything. He acts while she thinks of all the repercussions, he cultivates an image of a thug while in reality he is a very clever, ruthless savage in his reactions. If you compare Gemma with a fox, then Terry is a wolf. They might look incompatible, but they are formidable together.

This short story reminded me of The Taming of The Shrew, so if you enjoy this familiar plot, you find pleasure in Waterlocked.

After finishing Building from Ashes, book 1 in the Elemental World series, I couldn’t help myself but continue on with this novella – and am so happy that I did. I absolutely loved this story, in fact Gemma and Terry just became my favorite couple in the world of elemental vampires. I didn’t expect this at all, as I wasn’t too fond of Gemma from the original Elemental Mysteries books, and Terry did not have much of a presence, aside from a brief mention. But here, both of these characters were just for my liking: headstrong, opinionated, and definitely in love.

I enjoyed the pace and the storyline. Ms. Hunter is able to tie each book with the next and it is very interesting to be able to see the story from different perspectives, while also getting original storylines. In fact, I was a bit sorry this was just a novella and not a complete novel, but we will now look forward to another favorite of mine – Baojia in Blood and Sand.

Once again Elizabeth Hunter has written a fantastic on the edge of seat book although being a novella it is still up to her standards of the other books. I love how Terry tricked Gemma into marriage and how Gemma seemed like a bitch but that is what Terry loves about her. In the end we find out where she is the way that she is and it does make sense. Terry Ramsey and how he met Gemma and that he is an absolute bruiser and cad. I love him especially the cockney accent. Elizabeth Hunter goes at the plot with B and Gio and the Elixir of Life from all different angles and shows who are all being felt out.

This was my least favorite book out if Elemental Mysteries / Elemental World series. Somewhere around 70% into it I found it slightly exciting but other than that I didn't care for this book. I didn't think Gemma & Terry deserved their own book -- maybe later I'll figure out why it was so important to tell their story, but I think there are so many more intriguing characters I'd prefer to read about.

The story of Terry and Gemma is, unfortunately, a short one. We get to see how they came together and it helps understand Gemma. I just wished we had learned more about Terry. That's why I prefer novels over novellas. Never the less, the story is, as always, well written.

Elemental World #1.5
Waterlocked (Elemental World, #1.5) by Elizabeth Hunter by Elizabeth Hunter was an excellent addition to her Elemental vampires world! I highly recommend this book to anyone who is a fan of her Elemental World, Elemental Mysteries, and her Elemental Legacy series. And if you are not a fan yet, once you read them, you will be!

This book draws into focus the relationship between Gemma Melcombe, earth vampire and oldest daughter of Carwyn ap Bryn, and Terrence (Terry) Ramsey, water vampire and current leader of London. Love and Adventure on the High Seas

A 4.5 star read.

We are given an insight to Carwyn's oldest child, Gemma and her new husband. Elizabeth Hunter has woven an interesting novella, that shows us how Gemma and Terry met, through their wedding day and ending with an interesting honeymoon. There is adventure on the ocean, followed by a twist near the end. Their relationship is built on respect and a good foundation of a good business arrangement. That being said, Terry loves Gemma vey much, and his aim while on their honeymoon is to help her realise just how much she really loves him.

This book was a really good read, lots of action of both kinds, but thankfully not graphic. The story flowed off the pages with ease, and was ending far too quickly. There seems to be a common thread to these Elemental World books, and that is the mention of the Elixir. It will be interesting where that thread leads.

Overall, with was a good quick read in these series, and would definitely recommend reading.

Short story about Terry’s plan to win Gemma’s trust and love and have her his, forever. First step is tricking Gemma to agree to take time out from the current crisis for a real wedding, then getting her completely to himself on the honeymoon.

Has a lot of interesting backstory of how they met, etc. I love his boat.

Footnote: 1) That was stupid, not keeping weapons in his day chamber.

2) Galicia, and the Ria de Muros, is in the NW corner of Spain, but according to Google Earth Pro the Rias de Galicia is on the NE corner near Barcelona.

3) Also the Galicia coast is the farthest part of Spain from Gibraltar and Africa thus being the least convenient. Plus the cold Atlantic storms come through there (creating all the small bays). The whole thing doesn’t make sense.

Fave scenes: Terry seeing Daniel in his office, the conclusion of the boat chase and taking care of unexpected company.

This was not what I expected. While Hunter usually includes a mystery as part of the novel, this work was a "Bodice Ripper". A "bodice ripper" is a sub genre of romance that focuses on aggression instead of courtship and love. Vampires are all about power, this genre does fit. For me devoting 100 pages to the romance became boring. I enjoy action scenes. They were included only at the end. They did move the arc forward but not by much.

The plot: Gemma awakes to find herself surrounded by water. Salt water. She is on a sloop with Terrance who tells her now that they are married, he is due his honeymoon. Resistance is futile, or is it? Who wins in the end?

I gave this 3 stars. Just because I don't like a novella, it does not mean that you will agree with me.

I read this series because it was recommended to me since I like The All Souls Trilogy by Deborah Harkness. I do not like it quite as much as The All Souls Trilogy but it is good nonetheless. I like the librarian aspect and the historical research part but I also think the romance and story line in general is quite well done. It is a series that reads quickly while also keeping you engaged in the plot and characters.

Trust in Strength

Enemies to Lovers omniscient point of view
Standalone but characters from all the elemental stories are present and it advances the overall story.
Together due to political allegiances and power structures, Terry has had to hide his love for Gemma, until now. Will she return his feelings or kill him?
Appreciate that Gemma is older than Terry. Appreciate how each sees and values the strengths and intelligence of the other.
Steamier than previous stories.

Short book

I read this after reading the first two books, I knew there was something in between the two main novels, since they are book 1 & 3. I couldn't find book 2, then by chance I found this. So I discovered that there is a short book between each main book. I enjoyed this story & it filled in a blank that had been referred to in book 3. So better to read in sequence of possible. Well written and good editing. Part of Kindle Unlimited

Ast all the books in those series it was funny and interesting, and this is quite different because the main characters are two vampires, but... I always end with the sensation that the man is more important than the woman. I would really like to read something where he needs help or, like Beatrice in the other books, is ignorant of the existence of vampires and she is the powerful figure, the ones that every person looks to. I just want something different.

Novella set in the Elemental Mysteries world.

I was binging this series and then decided to take a break. It was fairly easy to slip back into the larger world with this novella, though I did have to remind myself of who some of the characters were.

Overall, a good story. I thought the novella length was perfect, and the romance was developed nicely. While it was mostly self-contained, it did also have tie-ins to the larger world/story.
