Outlaw Lawman is the first book I've read by Dolores Fossen, but it will definitely not be my last. I loved this book! It's actually the 3rd book in the series and I'm sorry to say I haven't read the first 2. I will be soon, though. You can easily read this book independently. I didn't feel like I was missing anything by having not read the series in order.
Texas Marshall Harlan McKinney's life is about to become all kinds of crazy. He and his "brothers" were abused repeatedly at the home they grew up in, yet they stuck together through it all. Becoming men of law to protect the innocent just seemed like the logical next step for them. Just recently the man responsible for their years of abuse has been found, or at least his body has. Everyone is a suspect. Afterall, when he disappeared their life got a whole lot better. They went to live with Kirby, who taught them what it was like to be loved and how to be good men. His past is not something he likes to dwell on, so all this dredging up things he'd rather have stayed buried is not what he would call fun. He has one good memory from his past and he hasn't seen her since he was 16. She's back and has a whole lot of trouble on her shoulders. Can he overlook the past hurts she's caused and keep them both safe? Apparently, his body can if nothing else. The sparks are still there.
Caitlyn Barnes is running scared. She's receiving very threatening letters and she has no doubt they are real. Who they are from is a little more suspect. They share very personal information that no one else would know, other than the man she lost her virginity to, and she hasn't spoken to him as a friend since they were 16 and living in a home for troubled kids that no one else wanted. After leaving the home she didn't look back. She doesn't really believe that Harlan would send her those threatening letters, but she had to investigate to be sure. She offended her past love by writing a damaging article on him and his brothers as lawmen and now, she needs his help. In her heart she knew he would always be there for her, but she didn't expect that same attraction to come flooding back.
This book was so good! The drama and intrigue was perfectly written. I suspected the one "bad" guy, but then was blown away by the way it all panned out.
Caitlyn had this really sweet, little tattoo on her hip with Harlan's initials. I am not normally one that thinks getting a man's name or initials is a great idea, but this was so sweet and lovely.
"You had my initials tattooed on your body?"....."Hey, a girl's first time is a big deal, and I didn't have enough money to put your whole name there."
I would like to thank NetGalley.com for the loan of this book in exchange for my honest review.
I’ve loved all the books in this series. I love reading about Kirby, and his foster sons. Kirby adopted several of the boys from the Rocky Creek Facility. Most of his adoptive sons grew up to be U.S. Marshals.
This book is a fast paced, suspense filled romance. Caitlyn, and Harlan meet when they lived at Rocky Creek. As teenagers they shared kisses, and a passion filled night. They went their separate ways when Harlan was adopted. The books starts out by Caitlyn being threatened. The notes are typed, and Caitlyn thinks it is Harlan that is after her. The information she received stated Harlem would not be home, so she breaks into his home in the middle of the night. She needed to find proof that Harlem was behind the threats. Shortly after Caitlin and Harlem are hit with a Taser gun. Throughout the book they are trying to find out who is behind the attacks, and are running for their life. They are also fighting the passion that is still burns red hot.
Sample from chapter 4 Even over the roar in her ears, Caitlyn had no trouble hearing the man’s footsteps. Definitely not light. More like stomps. Of course, she already knew he was in a rage, so it was no surprise that he was coming at them like a madman. But why was he trying to kill them now when he’d had plenty of time to do it while they’d been unconscious inside the motel room? Caitlyn didn’t have time to consider an answer because there was another shot. This one tore through the hood of the car and came so close to them that she could swear she felt the heat and movement of the bullet.
So far I have read two books of this series and I have liked them both. Now I just need to read the book I am missing and wait for the rest of the series. The plot I liked it kept me guessing the whole way through. It started off with action and drama and did not let up till the end.
The characters most had a rough childhood. Marshall Kirby saw that the kids were getting abused at youth home. He tried to stop it and was able to adopt 5 teenagers. They all became Marshalls like him.
The director of the youth home disappeared and later his body was found. Now they are trying to figure out who helped his wife with his murder and burying the body. Some people think it was Marshall Kirby. He is very sick and fighting cancer right now. Some people think his sons would cover up for him.
Caitlyn is a investigative journalist and somebody is threatening her. They have personal information that leads her to believe it is Harlan. She breaks into his ranch house to get proof and runs into him. She tells him why she is their and she thought the threats to her from him. The last time he talked to her he threatened her because she said bad things about Marshalls and the work he did.
He is tasered and drugged. So is Caitlyn and they wake up handcuffed together in their underwear in a motel. They find their clothes and get out of their. Before they get to far from the room a masked gunman shows up looking for them and start shooting at them.
Every time things start to calm down something else happens to them or a couple of the suspects. They are even running from the law for a short time. As they figure out who wants Caitlyn dead and why. Does it have to do with who murdered the director when they were teenagers? Some answers are found out but their is a lot they still don't know. I will be looking forward to reading the rest of the series.

Very good book with lots of action going on. Caitlyn and Harlan had known each other as teenagers at the children's home. Now she's running scared. She has been receiving death threats that lead her back to Harlan. When she shows up at his house looking for answers they are both attacked and kidnapped and barely escaped with their lives. They find out they are suspects in a murder and go on the run as they look for answers. As they are cleared of that suspicion other attacks happen that appear to lead back to the unsolved murder of the director of the children's home, but also could have a connection to a stalker in Caitlyn's past. Besides fighting for her life, Caitlyn is also fighting her attraction to Harlan. She has never forgotten him and the intensity of these days is just ramping up her feelings.
Meanwhile Harlan was surprised at Caitlyn's reappearance in his life. He hadn't heard anything from her except for one less than flattering news story she wrote on the marshal's service since they were teens. As they try to stay ahead of the killer he finds himself frequently distracted by the chemistry between the two of them. I really liked his protectiveness toward Caitlyn even when he wasn't sure he could trust her. As the attacks escalate he is more determined to keep her safe and see where their attraction takes them.
The action and intrigue were very good. There was plenty of action to keep the characters on their toes. The mystery of who was behind it all was pretty convoluted. Sometimes I was sure who it was and other times I began to doubt. The way it ended up was pretty intense. I'm definitely looking forward to the rest of the series.
One thing you can count on this series is its non-stop action. We're back in Maverick County this time for Marshal Harlan McKinney story.
The on going story arc of who helped kill the man that ran the group home of foster kids continues on. Harlan and Caitlyn Barnes were both in the home and were "together" when the murder happened. Afterwards when Harlan and his adopted brothers went to live with Marshall Kirby, Caitlyn was sent to another foster home and they lost touch. Caitlyn isnt well liked by the brothers now as she grew up to become a investigative journalist that has done pieces suggesting that Kirby or one of the boys may have had a hand in the murder.
After getting threatening letters and finding out that two girls they were also in the home with have either been murdered or missing she decides to break into Harlan's house to prove he is the one sending the threats.
Once Harlan convinces her he isnt the one doing it the action and attempts on there lives start. The mystery of what is really going on and who is behind is all wrapped up in a intricate plot. As with the previous books you are guessing right up to the end on who the real bad buy is - cause Ms Fossen loves to throw more than on bad guy in her books :)
Cant wait for the next brother/marshall's story and to get more clues as to what really went on all those years ago.
This was quite the story. Full of twists and turns. The plot was thick. Plenty of chemistry and back history of Harlan and Caitlyn. All characters were very well developed. The suspense of the whole book kept you on the edge of the seat in this who-dunnit.
The only negative thing I have to say, is the end. It was so rushed that it was completely anti-climactic. Like, this whole great mystery romance that kept building and building, to just be let down on the last page by something so quick. I would have loved to see a little bit more there. But all in all, was a good read. I rather enjoyed it.
Book made no sense, I gave up! Everyone was a suspect in the same murder! It's like this story was part of a series and the background from the other book was missing. I gave it a fair shot and was 80% through the story but gave up! Disappointed as I usually like her books..
Bits of it were exciting, most of it was either confusing or a bit farfetched. No crime lab would get results that fast, especially in a Podunk little town. Also, some editing mistakes that should have been caught were an added annoyance. Meh.
The Outlaw Lawman by accomplished author Delores Fossen, was book three of the series, The Marshals of Maverick County. I suspect, if I had read the book after reading the series, a lot of the action and characters would make more sense.
Texas marshal Harlan McKinney and feisty journalist Caitlyn Barnes have quite a history. He was her first love and years after their night of awakening, she still found him irresistibly sexy, despite his tough facade. She was someone he felt he would never deserve, and in some cases, didn't even want. She was unpredictable, and a woman he desperately fought his attraction to.
When thrust together unexpectedly, danger and mysterious intrigue followed their every move. The synopsis sounded great on this book. Sadly, I didn't find the story quite measured up. There were so many twists and turns in the plot, that at times, it all felt a little unbelievable. With little descriptive detail, repetitive phrasing and frequent inexplicable reactions (a US marshal going rogue for twenty-four hours), Outlaw Lawman was an ordinary read.
I did appreciate how the author cleverly kept you guessing as to who was the read villain. That was impressive. In the end, I felt it was what it was. A light romantic suspense/mystery.
Thank you NetGalley for the ARC for review. No compensation was received for this review.
THIS STORY WAS RATHER PREDICTABLE BUT I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN A SUCKER FOR OLD FLAMES REUNITING, AND THIS IS ONE OF IT.
OUR HERO is a sturdy Ranger who finds his old flame or the girl he has ever felt anything for trespassing in his home. She reveals that someone is threatening her life and that she would be dead tomorrow, and she has the nerve to accuse him as the culprit! There is not one emotion that can describe what the man feels, not when he is torn between attraction and ire for the woman who turns his world upside down. The rest you can imagine from there.
OUR HEROINE is a journalist/reporter who has done some damage to the Rangers and our hero isn't keen to see her again after all those years. He was her first lover and has never stopped loving him, but somehow along the way they lost touch, until now when there is some psycho killer out to kill her and her ranger. As they unravel the mystery, they also rekindle their romance.
OVERALL it was a very straightforward story and while I can say it was okay, it wasn't wowzah to me, so unless you are a fan of this author, this book is just so-so.

Review I was really looking forward to reading this as the first two books in the Marshall's of Maverick county series were fantastic. Unfortunately that was not to be; the Outlaw lawman was disjointed and flowed poorly. I found it very hard too identify with Harlan, he was dull. A very frustrating read.
This book tells the story of Harlan and Caitlyn. They grew up in an abusive youth home where the caretaker beat them up regularly. When he mysteriously disappeared and found dead, all the youth and Marshall Kirby was suspected in assisting the wife to kill him. Years have passed, Marshall Kirby is in a serious health condition and Harlan found Caitlyn trying to sneak into his home. Caitlyn is a journalist and someone is threatening her and wanted her died. Her prime suspect is Harlan. But it turned out that the death note bring her to Harlan was the main intended purpose by the killer and soon, both Harlan and Caitlyn found themselves to be on the run for something that they have been set up.
The book is set in a very fast pace and it is interesting for me to read them. Each time an incident occurs and when it was solved, another one will crop up again. The story is like a guessing game for me to guess the actual killer and his reason for doing so. Overall, it is a solid read to me ;)
In Fossen’s romantic suspense novel, Caitlyn Barnes shows up at Texas marshal Harlan McKinney’s house determined to find the evidence to prove he had set her up following death threats she had received. But this is just the beginning because before long they are both on the run from the law. To survive the growing web of escalating violence they’ve been sucked into, they must trust each other and survive their past so they can find a future.
A fast-paced addition to The Marshals of Maverick County series.
This was probably my least favorite of the The Marshals of Maverick County series. I keep reading because I really want to find out what happened. But this one left me we a hanging question that left a gap in the story that is annoying. Like anyone reading the book would think any of the Marshals would forget about someone.
This is a really great series. The first 3 books were a month apart. Hope we don't have to wait too long for the next 3. Six brothers should mean six books as that has been Ms. Fossen's pattern in the past. So far, she has always proved an excellent read.
"Top Pick! Fossen delivers a flawless roller-coaster adventure that careens through the countryside with the velocity of a speeding bullet. It will take your breath away." RT Book Reviews, rated 4 1/2 stars
