Her McKnight in Shining Armor

Rate this book
A deal made to be broken

Everything about Alex McKnight was hard—hard body, hard heart and damn hard to ignore. Yet architect Ellie Hart couldn't deny her immediate attraction to the dark-haired, handsome contractor assigned to complete the Mercy Medical Center with her. Ellie traveled with her own emotional baggage and there was no way she was going to fall so fast for a man like Alex. But when she actually did fall fast—by tripping and injuring her foot—Alex came to the rescue by offering her a place to stay while she recovered.

Then Alex suggested the a no-strings-attached, passion-unleashed affair…at least until their project was finished and Ellie could walk again. But as restless days became tender, sleepless nights, could Ellie keep her heart safe? And more, could Alex?

Very good book. Ellie has come to Blackwater Lake as the architect for the new Mercy Medical expansion. She is trying to restart her career after falling for a coworker who turned out to be married. While she is attracted to Alex she makes it clear that she won't get involved with him. When she falls and breaks her ankle she finds that she is dependent on him for a place to stay while she recovers and their mutual attraction only gets stronger. When Alex proposes a short term fling she figures she can enjoy being with him and move on when the job finishes. I loved Ellie's independence and determination to focus on her job. Her attraction to Alex was a surprise and she fought it as hard as she could. When she broke her ankle she really wanted to handle it all on her own, but soon realized that she couldn't. Moving in with Alex put a real strain on her willpower. I loved seeing the way that she fit into his life even though she knew it wasn't permanent. Ellie's growing love for the area made her want to stay but Alex's frequent reminders of the terms of their fling made her think that he was ready for her to go.

Alex had been terribly hurt by his ex-wife's actions and he vowed that he would not give another woman the chance to destroy him like that. He is very careful not to get involved with anyone local and makes sure that he doesn't risk his heart. His immediate attraction to Ellie puts those rules at risk. When he offers her a place to stay while her foot heals he realizes that he has just made his life a lot harder. As she becomes more and more a part of his life Alex gets more worried about what is going to happen in the future. Ellie's growing love for Blackwater Lake makes him wonder if she would stay but he is afraid to risk himself and starts to withdraw. It's not until after she leaves that he truly understands what he is losing and what he has to do about it. I loved his confrontation with one of her brothers and then later when he faces all three of them. It really showed the depth of his feelings and how much he really wanted to get it right.

I’m from Texas, and I was annoyed with how many times Ellie said ya’ll when speaking to only one person. Ya’ll is a phase we use when we are speaking to more than one person. If the author wanted to make Ellie sound more like a person from Texas, you could have used the phase, Bless your heart, or yes ma am, no ma am, We are big on manors in Texas. We also call everyone Mrs, followed by the persons last night. The author was right about one thing. Most people from Texas are stubborn. I did like the way she made Ellie so head strong. Ellie came to Montana as an architect. She met, and worked side by side with Alex. When she happened to fall down, it Alex that was there for her. They found friendship, and passion when she moved in with Alex while she was waiting for her foot to heal. I loved Alex’s housekeeper. She was an older lady, that didn’t miss a thing. She was also not afraid to speak her mind. She knew Alex would never get rid of her. She was more like a mother to Alex, than she was a housekeeper. This really was a Heart warming story!

Sample from chapter one
She felt a tear slide down her cheek. Then another. She brushed them away, hoping no one would notice, but a second later Alex was holding out a folded white handkerchief. He leaned close and said, “I always carry one for weddings.” She smiled when he pressed it into her hand and moments later was especially glad to have it. The vows and a spectacular kiss had her sniveling like a baby. Immediately after the ceremony, the wedding party disappeared with the photographer for pictures. Guests stood and milled around on the grass or headed to the decorated tent nearby, set up with tables for dinner. “Thanks. I’ll return this after it’s washed.” Ellie held up the handkerchief. “For the record, I’m glad you were packin’ “I always cry at weddings.” “Right.” She laughed. “I’m completely mortified. You must think I’m a big baby. But I just couldn’t help myself. It was such a beautiful wedding.” “Don’t apologize. It was beautiful and nice to know some people get a happy ending.”

One of my favorite lines taken from chapter 14
He’d come to Dallas for her and would find a way to go to the moon and back if that’s what it took to win her.

Building Trust

Ben McKnight and Ellie Hart have both been betrayed by love. When they begin to develop feelings for each other, they fight it as hard as they can. Their struggle to trust again makes you empathize with both of them. This was a good way to finish the Mercy Medical series.

I liked the storyline of this book, but the language was annoying. I'm from the south and have NEVER heard anyone say y'all when speaking to one person. It made the heroine seem like a caricature of how a southern person speaks. Also, some of the slang used felt awkward and out of place. It was directly in violation with the image we were supposed to have of her being a well-educated affluent woman.

"Top Pick! Southwick's touching Big Sky romance blooms beautifully amidst small-town meddling. Readers will enjoy equal doses of laugh-out-loud humor and tenderness, along with page-searing love scenes." RT Book Reviews, rated 4 1/2 stars

I liked this, but there were a lot of things that bugged me. I felt like there was no real connection to place and people. When Ellie went back to Texas, it really drove off the road for me. I felt a distinct disconnect.
