In the last story, we saw Lexi Harper (Gage's sister) get used by a guy who was romancing her to get to her brother. She's struggled with her weight, so doesn't have much self-confidence and she has a history of being used for some purpose or another, so when Brett Newcomb starts flirting with her, she's skeptical. But she's livid when she meets him at her father, the mayor's house and learns that he's an architect trying to get a resort built in town (and her father's approval would mean so much). But Brett is a charmer and genuinely seems to be interested in her, despite his ambitions. For his part, he really is interested in Lexi, but he also desperately needs this resort to go through and Lexi is a good bet for getting her father's approval. But Brett doesn't know how much he could hurt Lexi if she ever found out he'd decided to kill two birds with one stone.
I liked Lexi and how, despite her awful past with guys using her, she decides that she's going to take a risk on Brett anyway. I can't decide if it's just really brave or really stupid knowing he already has a possible ulterior motive. She is a hot mess and I like those kinds of heroines. Brett was okay but kinda thick when it comes to how things are perceived. And because of him, this is an example of the trope from the first book done in a way that I don't necessarily like. Here, Brett's interest in Lexi and his desire to get what he wants are very much intertwined. He basically sees it as, they're going to end up in bed anyway (it's pretty much inevitable) so what harm is there in trying to urge her to accept the resort at the same time? He's not pursuing her for that purpose, but he's also still using her to get what he wants. And he can't see how much that's going to hurt Lexi if she finds out. And she even tells him about Brandon (the other guy who used her) and he was all offended on her behalf, but he never stopped to think how he might be like him. I mean, he's lying about the fact that he has a background on her (since his boss wants him to use her) and he's not being 100% honest about why he wants the resort anyway. Well, that spectacularly backfires on him and Lexi does exactly the right thing - sends him packing. But all the while she's hoping he'll come back for her. I like that he does and he's willing to sacrifice it all to prove that he came back to town just for her...but I kinda wish it hadn't all been in public (but I get why it needed to be since they had to put Mrs. Copeland in her place).
This is pretty steamy and the two definitely have plenty of chemistry...and of course since she owns a sweet shop there's a lot of inventive uses of chocolate.

Rating 3.25 stars I had a hard time with the hero's actions, his using the information his boss had given him on the heroine, even when he found out that the heroine had been used before. See, the hero needs to push his boss's proposal of a resort through to get a hefty bonus that will help him start his own architectural firm as well as bring security for his mom and sister.
His boss suggests using the heroine but he is attracted to her and genuinely likes her. The book was unsatisfying with the hero's actions plus I felt the heroine's body image and confidence issues weren't really resolved. I didn't see where her sense of inadequacy came from, she had a great business, was the Mayor's daughter. Something was off with the book.
Typos Mrs. Copeland's eyes widened and then narrow dangerously. "Well," she huffed. "I shouldn't be surprised. You were always or a hopeless cause, Alex Harper. My one true disappointment as an educator."
If Mrs. Copeland was an educator then Lexi was a supermodel, something that was far from the realm of possibilities as it to be a pure fairy tale.
Note: Fairy tale in the above expert/teaser is misspelled. In actuality it should be a compound word; fairytale.
and another
"Why didn't you put her in her place?" The low, smoky voice startled Lexi, and she checked her spine straight again. A man she'd never met stood in the far corner leaning against her shelf of prebagged goodies. She been so preoccupied that she hadn't noticed him. "Because it would have been wasted breath, and I try not to waste anything."
Note: misspelling, prebagged should be pre-bagged.
So someone over at the Harlequin Pub house isn't completing the task of checking words...
Anyway... Overall not a bad story
"Food is meant to be enjoyed. Savored. Especially desserts."
I liked this story, yet I found something just a little off about the heroine. I liked the hero, and I thought he found a nice work around in the end. Overall, a decent story. *I received an ARC of this book and this is my voluntary and honest review.
Pretty much what you would expect. Overall it’s a very predictable book, but it’s also a really quick read. Obviously more focus is on the sexual tension between characters than the actual plot and grammar, but it’s what you expect going in so you can’t really be mad about it.
Lexi is the daughter of the mayor of small town Sweetheart. Brett is the architect sent to get the town to agree to having a resort built on the edge of town.
Her issues: Self-esteem related to weight issues when she was young; a guy recently using her to get information on her brother.
His issues: Apparently lived in a dangerous neighborhood while he was growing up; dad left when he was 9 years old leaving him feeling responsible for his mother and younger brother; hates his boss and needs the bonus he will get from town agreeing to have resort built so that he can start his own business.
Plot includes Brett's boss telling him to use Lexi to get to the mayor and get his agreement, therefore swaying the rest of the town into agreeing to the resort. It appears that the biggest reason the town doesn't want the resort is because it's ugly.
Overall, the story was decent. While I was reading it though, the plot/story seemed really familiar. In fact, I was thinking I had already read it before remembering that it was just released.
While not promoted as a series, there is a book about Lexi's brother that precedes this one. Maybe, if I had read that one first, I would have enjoyed this one better. The main characters' issues don't really seem like a big deal to me. And what background information is given doesn't add a whole lot to the overall storyline. Supporting characters are not developed and seem one dimensional.
I loved the hero (Brett Newcomb), who had an interesting back story and strong character arc. However, I could never fully connect with the heroine, even though I really wanted to. Too many unhealthy behaviors (hypercritical of her body, obsessive need to work out, rapid shifts in mood and thought process) for my taste. Despite that issue, I loved the author's creation of Sweetheart, and how well she captured small town life. Even if this book wasn't my cup of tea, I'd definitely try others by this author.
i stumbled on to this book not realizing i had read the first book of the series. happily i read about lexi who has some body issues thanks to a not so nice neighbor and other things. but is completely loveable. our hero is a good guy who needs to work out how to do the right thing by a place he begins to feel accepted and a woman he is made to love.
This book opened with a rehash of the heroine's childhood days learning etiquette from the town grouch. Unfortunately, this completely lost me as a reader. Although there were elements I liked, I just couldn't get back into the story.
As a fellow chocolate lover, I felt as if i identified with Lexi. Always hiding in the shadows and not much self-esteem or confidence. I loved how Brett could bring out the inner vixen in her. It gives me hope that I may be able to find the inner vixen in myself one day. Loved the book. :)
