PREMISE
The unfortunately named B.J. decides to come home after spending 17-18 years on the rodeo circuit. There he runs into his first love, Savannah. She is the sheriff in their little town of Coffee Creek, Montana. Savannah is poor and considered 'trash' by the town - her father was a drunk gambler and her mother is suffering from early-onset Alzheimer's. B.J. is rich and the eldest son of the evil matriarch Olive, who has featured in the other books in this series (Remember Me, Cowboy and Her Cowboy Dilemma).
Because a watch has been sold on Ebay that is related to a mysterious death that took place 17-18 years go that both B.J. and Savannah's twin brother, Hunter were involved in - things get hairy.
ANALYSIS
I couldn't really get into this book for a variety of reasons.
THE HERO
- Lies to the heroine repeatedly to protect her scumbag brother.
- Follows heroine around on her investigation, even though she is the sheriff and he is one of the prime suspects. SO DUMB.
- "I'm just the girl that wouldn't sleep with you. That's what you want, isn't it? Another notch on your belt?"
"My belt has plenty of notches. More than I need." pg. 81
Ew, gross.
- "Would you stop being so damn nice?"
He shook his head. Any other woman and he'd be long gone. "I just can't win with you, can I?" pg. 130
Also gross. So... she's different from every other woman, whom he would have abandoned already. Charming. /s
- He's a complete moron.
THE HEROINE
- She just ALLOWS B.J., a prime suspect in a possible homicide, to tag along everywhere with her on her investigations. Including while she interviews people. This is the most shitty sheriffing I've ever seen.
- She kisses, dates, and has sex with one of the prime suspects in a murder investigation. SHE IS A SHERIFF.
- Then she's like, "Why won't people take me seriously? I love being sheriff!" And I'm like, "It's because you are publicly dating homicide suspects and also allow the homicide suspects to come with you on all investigations. YOU FUCKING MORON."
HOW'S THE SEX, CARMEN?
I actually respect young Savannah, who dated B.J. for two years but never let it get beyond kissing.
B.J. and Savannah had dated for more than two years, and in all that time she'd never let him do more than hold her hand or kiss her modestly. At parties she'd avoided drinking and smoking, which meant she'd always been the designated driver. pg. 33
Not only is he a mensch about it (this is from ages 15-17) but I found her celibacy endearing. She is considered poor trash by the town and she doesn't want to confirm everyone's worst thoughts by getting pregnant outside of wedlock. I sympathize and completely understand where she is coming from. And I admire her for being so strong.
When they were younger, she'd never let things get that heated between them. She'd been too afraid that if she gave in, just a little, there would be no stopping point. And wouldn't it be her luck to end up pregnant, no matter how careful she tried to be? No one in town would be surprised. They'd just look at her father and her mother and say, "Figures."
"We're too young," she'd told B.J. whenever his kisses threatened to become a little too intimate. And to his credit, he'd never pushed when she said that.
"I can wait," he'd told her. "But you have to know, I'd never hurt you." pg. 92
The problems come in when Savannah and B.J. reunite as adults.
1.) I could not for the life of me figure out why they were kissing and eventually having sex. He's lying to her about what happened that night. He's been lying for seventeen years. She knows this on some level. She always suspects him on some level. Not ideal for romance.
She's the fucking Sheriff.
And you're trying to tell me these two are canoodling? And also dating in public? Come on. It just wouldn't happen unless both were complete morons. So, I guess they are complete morons. Not ideal for romance.
2.) It was hard for me to believe Savannah - who was a very rigid, uptight, controlled character (and not just in regards to sex, but in regards to every aspect of her life) - would have sexual experience. I just could not envision her trusting any man enough to have sex with him.
But the book doesn't mention anything about her still being a virgin. It does mention an ex. But I just couldn't wrap my head around this woman dating or being sexually active with someone. Carmichael never mentions if she actually had sex with her ex-boyfriend.
I could see her deciding to finally have sex with her first love who rolls back into town IF - and this is a big if - Carmichael had written this better. If Carmichael had made B.J. just a normal rancher, not someone being investigated in a homicide. If Carmichael had made B.J. even remotely charming, instead of vaguely gross and a huge idiot.
This could have been a really romantic and sexy book. Great set-up. Poor heroine growing up in love with a boy from a rich family. Being so terrified of her already bad reputation that she never allows him to even get to second base. Becomes Sheriff but never loses her rigid, tight grasp on the little bit of life she CAN control. Sexy cowboy comes home after a long absence. They slowly reconnect.
This could be extremely romantic and sexy.
But no. There was absolutely no sexual tension between the characters. I found them getting together to be extremely unbelievable.
I think cutting out the whole entire homicide subplot would be an improvement. It added nothing to the plot but stupidity. The book had other problems, but that would be a huge step in the right direction.
The sex is off-page and not described.
TL;DR Just a major disappointment. Not because Carmichael is a bad writer - she puts words together fine. But the plot here and the romance here just left me wailing in despair. It didn't make any sense. It was hard to believe two people could be so incredibly stupid. There was no sexual or romantic chemistry between the MCs.

Read alot of Harlequin this was the first one from this author. I would recommend reading this one and also now would like to read more of her books. Liked it is in a series (like series always more to follow) liked the town. Strong character Sheriff Savannah is in a woman. Like that about the main character in a woman. Independent but yet strong family sense to her too. In enters childhood sweetheart B.J. Lambert rodeo man who does the circuit hardly at home on his families ranch. Circumstances have them meeting officially then again later while trying to see her brother Hunter at a rodeo. The story goes from there with mystery and B.J. trying with romance involving a incident from the past involving B.J. and her brother Hunter that drove them apart so to speak. I am a Sherlock Holmes sort of person when it comes to a mystery when investigations are involved and can usually figure them out before the end of the story but this one surprised me. Don't want to spoil it for those who would want to read this themselves. Sorrow turns to happiness though in this.

In Promise from a Cowboy by C. J. Carmichael, Savannah Moody has worked hard to become the Sheriff of Coffee Creek and to be respected and looked up to by everyone, not be looked down and judged like she was when she was younger. The only thing shedoesn’t like about her job is when she has to give bad news, and the story begins with her coming into the church before a wedding to tell the Lambert family that the groom, B.J.’s brother has been in a car accident and died instantly.
B.J. has never forgotten or stopped loving Savannah, his first love, no matter how many years apart they have been. Now that he has seen her at the rodeo, even if she was looking for her brother, he knows that he needs to head back home and see if there is a chance that they can be together again. Read More...

Really enjoyed this book. Liked that one of the main characters was a strong woman and sheriff who works to solve a long ago mystery regardless how the outcome effects those close to her. Can't wait to read the rest of the books in the series.

Absolutely loved this book !! couldn't turn the pages fast enough. Great plot, the story flowed. B.J and Savannah are the love that everyone wants. The last page was so exciting I almost clapped out loud ! hoping there will be another :)

Promise from a Cowboy is the third book in C.J. Carmichael‘s terrific series, Coffee Creek Montana. The stories each feature one of the Lambert siblings from the Coffee Creek Ranch. This is BJ Lambert’s story. The family recently lost the youngest son in a terrible accident on his wedding day. The mother, Olive is very controlling and opinionated. She hasn’t spoken to her only sibling who lives on the ranch nearby because of a grudge she’s held for years. The oldest son, BJ has been competing in the rodeo since he graduated from high school. His remaining brother Corb and foster brother Jackson have been keeping the ranch afloat, along with his mother. Olive blames Jackson for the accident and has never treated him right even before that. Jackson has accepted a job with Olive’s estranged sister to run her ranch as she is dying. BJ agreed to leave the circuit and return to help run the ranch. His high school sweetheart Savannah Moody is the sheriff of their town and they broke up over something that happened 18 years earlier.
As the book opens, Savannah is contacted by a PI who was hired by a wealthy family in California whose 19 years old son disappeared 18 years ago. An expensive watch of the family had shown up in Montana and the family wants to pursue a lead on their son. Savannah is very worried because her twin brother Hunter and BJ had been riding ATV’s with some friends to a party when a bad storm hit. They were at an old abandoned barn on BJ’s aunt’s land and lightening struck it. The other friends all had left first. A body of a teenager was discovered in the loft of the barn. He had a high alcohol level and died of smoke inhalation. BJ and Hunter had called the authorities and also reported it to his aunt. They both said they didn’t know about someone else being in the barn. Savannah doesn’t believe their story but until now, this wasn’t a problem. The family wants to exhume the body of the unknown man.
Savannah tells BJ about the findings and they spend time together. They both realize they never got over their love for each other. BJ suggests they go on a date. She doesn’t think he will stay in town until he reassures her. She is also concerned how her dating him and the reopening of the barn Fire case will look to the townspeople as she is running for reelection. BJ’s mom is also against him dating Savannah as she never liked her. As the couple’s relationship begins again, she has doubts about whether BJ is telling the truth, in order to protect her brother. There’s lots of angst, romance and heartbreaking past events.
This is another well written book by C.J., like all of her others. I find the characters genuine and very likable except for Olive. There are some heartfelt moments between the siblings of both Savannah and BJ. The characters from the prior books are included in this story as well. It is so entertaining to have a past mystery included in the present day story. I am looking forward to reading the final book in the series. This is again, a five star book I’m pleased to recommend.

This time we’ll find a reunited couple who not only have to face the dangers of the present, but the memories of the past as well. When they were teenagers, Savannah and B. J. were in love- the innocence-of-youth kind of love- until one event changed everything when B. J. took off on the rodeo circuit, leaving Savannah and a mystery behind. When new information surfaces, Savannah, now the town’s sheriff, reinvestigates the event from their past… which also includes her brother. B.J. has returned home to tend to the family ranch, and that mystery is going to lie between them like a snake about to strike. The truth will always eventually rise to the surface; the hard part will be whether their newly rediscovered love survives that truth.
I enjoyed Promise From a Cowboy; it’s a well-written, engaging, and emotional romance. I have a personal issue with certain types of secrets or lies being kept from someone involved, someone either the heroine or the hero loves. That’s me, completely. So even though I liked their romance and was fully behind Savannah, I had a harder time loving B.J. Oh, I understood his reasons, but that same faithfulness in keeping a promise also kept me from completely falling for this hero. Each book in the series, I keep hoping that Olive will change her ways and not be such a… nasty person. But she’s up to her usual tricks once again. The mystery kept me on edge throughout, and I loved seeing familiar faces from the earlier titles once again. In all, I enjoyed myself here. If this sounds like your kind of Modern Western Romance, then you’d love Savannah and B.J.’s romantic journey.

This was a wonderful blend of romance, family drama, and suspense that kept me completely invested from beginning to end. The combination of a long-buried mystery and a second chance at first love made for an emotional and satisfying read.
B.J. and Savannah were such a compelling couple. Their relationship was shaped by a heartbreaking event that tore them apart years ago, and it was easy to feel the lingering love that neither of them had ever truly let go. B.J. is a loyal, honorable hero who has spent years carrying the weight of a promise, even when it meant sacrificing his own happiness. Savannah is equally admirable—a dedicated sheriff determined to uncover the truth while balancing her responsibilities to her family and her community.
I loved watching them slowly rebuild the trust that had been lost over the years. Their chemistry never faded, and every interaction was filled with unresolved emotions, longing, and hope. The romance developed naturally alongside the investigation, making both storylines stronger because they were so closely connected.
The mystery surrounding the decades-old barn fire added genuine suspense and kept me turning the pages. Every new revelation raised the stakes, forcing both B.J. and Savannah to confront painful memories while deciding what mattered most—justice, loyalty, or the future they still dreamed of together.
The family dynamics added even more emotional depth, especially the continuing tensions within the Lambert family. Returning characters helped make the world feel rich and connected, while the themes of forgiveness, healing, and finding the courage to face the past made the story especially rewarding.

Promise from a Cowboy is another outstanding novel from C.J. Carmichael, one of my all-time favourite authors. Time and again, she delivers stories that are heartfelt, engaging, and impossible to put down, and this book is no exception.
One of the things I love most about C.J. Carmichael's writing is her ability to create characters who feel completely real. Sheriff Savanna and B.J. Lambert are wonderfully developed, and their shared history adds depth, emotion, and authenticity to every interaction. The small town of Coffee Creek's setting is beautifully portrayed, making it easy to picture the landscape and feel as though you are right there alongside the characters.
The story centres on Savanna and B.J., former high school sweethearts whose lives were forever changed after a devastating fire in an old barn on his aunt's property. In the aftermath, B.J. and Savanna's brother left town to join the rodeo circuit, leaving unanswered questions and broken relationships behind. As things heat up between them, Savannah just can’t help feeling that BJ isn’t telling her all he knows about the incident, and suspects it has something to do with her twin brother Hunter. Savannah is torn between her love for BJ and her loyalty to her family and her job. Meanwhile, BJ has taken over responsibilities at the family ranch and is dealing with his own familial issues. Although there is a lot going on, this is a pretty straightforward second chance story with a predictable, but very satisfying ending. The small town dynamics play an important role in this story’s resolution, as does the power of trust and forgiveness. Savannah is a strong woman with a great deal on her plate, and I’m glad that after taking care of eveyone else, she has a hunky cowboy who wants to take care of her. This is an endearing tale with secrets, surprises and hope.

I like these books but they really do have an underlying tone of sadness. Which I find odd in a romance, but I guess real life isn’t all tea and roses either so there’s that. If you haven’t read books one and two in the series I really do recommend you do so before picking this one up. There are plot lines that started in book one and are still going on. Or maybe backstory either way. I seriously want to know the truth and the whole truth about what went down between the two sisters Olive who is the mother of BJ and her older sister Maddie. I hope we get the full story in the final installment. This book is about BJ and Savannah who were high school sweethearts but a tragic incident drove his friendship with her twin apart and eventually broke them up as well. The two of them are foolish. Savannah is scarred by her upbringing and takes responsibility for everything even when it’s not her actions or her fault. BJ tries to take care of her but a lie wrecks them. It’s a little nutty imo. I mean they clearly are meant to be I mean eighteen years later and they’re still hung up on each other. If only they’d opened up to each other all those years ago. Just time wasted. I loved the town hall meeting that and the very end were my favorite parts. Can’t wait to see how this one wraps up in book four.

I love this series and this installment; Book 3 of the Coffee Creek Montana series did not disappoint. The well written story teamed with the wonderful characters, heartfelt emotions, intrigue, family, and found family kept me engaged throughout. B. J. Lambert and Savannah Moody discover that their second-chance romance leads them to discovering that they still have a connection even after years apart. Both of them, the eldest of their siblings, take family and responsibility seriously. Their journey to finding their happy ever after is faced with conflict and decisions but ultimately their love for one another wins out in the end. Promise from a Cowboy: The Sheriff and the Cowboy is a compelling story and highly recommended.

Promise from a Cowboy was an enjoyable and suspenseful read that kept me curious until the end. I liked the book, although it was not one of those stories I flew through in a single sitting. The pacing felt a little slower at times, but the mystery kept pulling me back in.
There are so many questions hanging over the story. What exactly happened? What did Hunter know? And what does B.J. know? Every time I thought I might have figured something out, another detail made me question everything again.
The tension builds steadily and the unanswered questions definitely keep you on the edge of your seat. I wanted to keep reading because I needed to know how all the pieces would eventually fit together.
Overall this was a solid four-star read for me. It had suspense, secrets, emotion, and enough twists to keep me invested. I enjoyed the journey, even if it did not completely sweep me off my feet and gallop away with me.

Overall this was a solid four-star read for me. It had suspense, secrets, emotion, and enough twists to keep me invested. I enjoyed the journey, even if it did not completely sweep me off my feet and gallop away with me.

When B.J. and Savannah were in high school they were an item, things changed after an unfortunate barn fire took the life of a vagrant man that pointed a finger at her brother. He’s decided to finally come back to the ranch and Coffee Creek. Savannah is now the County Sheriff and she has questions for B.J. about the barn fire that killed a man 18 yrs ago. She knows B.J. Isn’t telling her everything about that night when he, her brother Hunter and other friends from high school had a party at the old barn. This story held my interest from beginning to end. As the mystery unfolds, Savannah discovers how far B.J.’s loyalty and protection goes. He’s always loved the woman and 18 yrs apart didn’t dim his desire. I have followed this entire series and am looking forward to Jackson’s story next.

I devoured the latest release in the Coffee Creek Montana series. Savannah has a strong commitment to her family and as she is the oldest, she has felt that responsibility at an early age. BJ is also the oldest of his family but also realizes that no one’s perfect. These are two people that belong together. They just have to get through the new investigation of an old case which involves BJ and Savannah’s brother. While BJ’s mother drives me nuts (she makes it known when she doesn’t approve of someone, like the women her sons are interested in or of her foster son) I am really interested in the decades old feud between her and her sister Maddie (first learned about it in book 1 but it is mentioned in each book). Can be read as a standalone but you will benefit reading in order so you have the family background.

OK. Once you begin this book, early on you must suspend belief to be able to read this book. Sheriff's don't allow possible suspects to follow them around...no matter how long they dated in high school. Upstanding men don't keep a secret for over a decade from the local constabulary...especially when a man died.
I have really liked this whole series and was waiting for this book! Unfortunately, the main couple in this book, Savannah and BJ, just seemed to not be on the same page. Savannah as the Sheriff should have put her foot down when BJ followed her around during the recently reopened murder investigation. BJ should have come clean about what he knew. Not the way to begin a relationship!
Three stars because anyone who writes and puts their words out for others to praise or criticize deserves that! I believe there is another book that will focus on Jackson. I'm hoping that ties up the mystery that the two sisters won't say anything about!

Promise from a Cowboy by C.J. Carmichael is the third book in the Coffee Creek Series while also being my favorite in the series too. I liked these characters oldest son, B J Lambert and Sheriff Savannah Moody, who have a history that contains a deadly fire from high school years. That night comes back changing from a cold case to an intense one, While this mystery is solved there are still others concerning an aunt and a now grown former foster boy. Still I can easily say why this one is my favorite, BJ’s mother has only a couple of scenes. I find her dominating and manipulating ways to be revolting. B J is respectful but does not allow this woman to be an influence on his decisions. Yeah, for him.

The characters were very appealing and complex and complicated and absolutely perfect together. Plot was intriguing and intense and well paced. World building was excellent and solidly drawn. Another great addition to the series. Enjoyed immensely and highly recommend.

The third book in the Coffee Creek Montana, a second chance romance between BJ and Savannah. BJ was just returned home to start working the family's ranch but has been harboring a secret since he left that involves Savannah's twin brother. Savannah is the town sheriff, and trying to uncover the secret from many years ago. Will this secret prevent a HEA with BJ and Savannah?
This was a hard book to put down, loved they mystery of the secret. Loved how BJ would not give up his pursuit of love for Savannah. Plus the ongoing relationship of Olive and her estranged sister, I can't wait to find out what happened. This is a stand alone but more enjoyed from the first book.
