When Pleasure Blooms – A unique short story which is very sensual and erotic yet has absolutely no explicit descriptions of sexual acts. An extremely rare and exotic flower brings great pleasure to those who are lucky enough to find it in bloom.
An African Massage - The tale of Tony, who gets more relaxation than he expected when he visits an African resort and unwinds, on his first day, with a massage. Note: This story is also published as a standalone book in its own right.
Mary Had A Naval Virgin - This story is based upon the popular nursery rhyme. These are the adventures of a couple of Royal Navy officer cadets when they encounter the unlikely ghost of the fabled Mary. Includes some m-f-m action with the ghost as the jam in the sandwich! This story is set in North and Mid Wales, and has some comedy value. Note: This story is also published as a standalone book in its own right.
Highland Roots - Fiona, a female American descendant of Jesse Chisholm, founder of the Chisholm Trail, heads for the Highlands of Scotland to investigate her Scottish roots. She meets her kilted distant cousin, Bruce, in a pub. He takes her for a ride into the wild mountainous countryside on his ancient motorbike. The trip turns out to be more exciting than either of them could possibly have imagined. Note: This story is also published as a standalone book in its own right.
On The Altar - Against the strong advice of her sister, Stacey O'Malley makes the long journey from western Canada to a medieval church in southern England in her quest to discover the truth behind her recurring dreams. The sexual tension builds to extreme heights, and is sustained as Stacey's emotions and body are stretched to the limits when she encounters a monstrous beast. Note: This story is also published as a standalone book in its own right.
My main interests are Reading, writing, field hockey, trad jazz, classical music, travel, languages, people, statistics, technology.
Some of my favourite books include Skallagrigg, The Island, The Return, Birdsong, A Thousand Splendid Suns, The Kite Runner, Eagle of the Ninth, We Won a War, In Quest of the Unicorn Bird, The Shadow of the Wind.
I've played (field) hockey since I was seven years old. I now play veterans hockey for Andover Diamonds. It is a lot of fun and very sociable.
I have always been a prolific reader and my favourite genre has to be historical fiction. I just feel that it brings history to life, and I am not too bothered about the historical accuracy as long as it has at least SOME basis in fact. Who is to say that the dryly recorded history that we learn in school is the truth, anyway? Most of it is only recorded by the journalists of the time, so draw your own conclusions.
My favourite films are Jungle Book, Brassed Off and The Fastest Indian. I should add Hitchcock's The Man Who Knew Too Much, because I was in it! Well read my writings for an explanation.
My biggest passion is the way that people treat people. Witnessing either cruelty or extreme kindness can make me cry equal buckets of tears. I can't stand prejudice. Read my motto at the bottom of my home page.
this is a collection of 5 short erotic pieces that have exactly zero monsters in them*. so, why did i read it, you ask?? because lance is a good guy, and even though he knows i only read erotica to laugh at it and then write snarky reviews, he had the balls to ask me to review it anyway. and i totally paid for my copy, so there isn't going to be any of that guilt over throwing someone's gift in the toilet and flushing wicked hard.
but honestly, if you are a fan of the erotic genre, this is actually something you should read. there is intercourse, there is variety in set pieces and kinds of intercourse, and while i didn't want to draw the blinds and cultivate my own garden while reading it, neither did i feel embarrassed by all the usual descriptions of those weird sticky contortions that we fortunately tune out the fact that they are so weird and sticky when we are actually engaged in them, but when we (i) read about, they are a kind of alienating reminder.
these are also published individually, and i briefly considered reviewing them separately, considering that i am falling behind in my reading challenge due to long exhausting workweeks, but having been grouchy about the lack of honor and nobility polluting the site lately, i figured i would not stoop to cheap and easy fixes for the problems i am facing. there are ways to address one's problems and still respect oneself in the morning. but quick - back to the book. this is a book review.
the first story is a clever bit of erotic gymnastics. not the kind that two disturbingly fit people can get up to when the mood strikes, but, dare i say?, literary gymnastics. its summary:
A unique short story which is very sensual and erotic yet has absolutely no explicit descriptions of sexual acts. An extremely rare and exotic flower brings great pleasure to those who are lucky enough to find it in bloom.
hey, baby. R U happy to see me?
now, i am no stranger to flower sex, but this one was different, and it delivers exactly what it promises, and i was impressed with both the premise and its execution.
the second piece is An African Massage. it is about a man who is in africa and goes to a masseuse. yup. but what the title doesn't tell you is that there is such a thing as an eyebrow fetish. i did not know this! but i also had not heard of "threading" until a few years ago, and i am honestly still unclear on what it is and why one would have it done, so i am really a terrible eyebrow-scholar. don't ask me any questions about eyebrows - there is nothing i think about less than eyebrows.
Mary Had a Naval Virgin
* this one kinda sorta has a monster in it if you count an imaginary lady/ghostie from a nursery rhyme who has intercourse with young virgin boys and who is invisible to people who have lost their virginity and so makes for a weird tableau when she is being intercoursed upon by two young men at the same time while some non-virgin watches from a window. i'm not really sure i accept the nursery-rhyme connection here, but when it comes to erotica, there are so many other things i just don't accept that this objection just kinda slides off of me. yup.
there are no lambs in this, which is a shame, because the original is full of innuendo.
Highland Roots
oh, like there is an erotic anthology anywhere that doesn't have a scottish tale in it, complete with a rugged man in a kilt who loooooves red pubic hair on girls. this one has lots of spanking, leather, motorcycles, genealogy, downsizing, and a picnic! and also this line, which is one of the few in this book that i couldn't help myself; i had to laugh at. sorry, lance!!
"I can't believe it! You have the pussy of my dreams! I've always fantasized about a woman's heavenly hole covered in lush red hair. You have an absolute forest! Wow, wow, WOW! Oh, Fiona! You are the woman of my dreams!"
it's the multiple "wows" that kill me. not that i haven't received complimentary ejaculations from my scrapbook of lovers (GOLLY, KAREN!), but still. printed out, it's just so giggly.
On the Altar
hooded orgy!! dreams coming true!! giant black… altar! and also cock. giant black cock. arcane erotica!! this one was probably my least favorite. very messy, no precautions taken, reveling in the ingestion of stranger-fluid-splatter… kids, do NOT try this at home. no matter what your dreams tell you. get better dreams.
I cannot review or rate this book, as I wrote it, but here is a bit of background information on where some of the stories came from.
The signature story, When Pleasure Blooms, just sprang into my head one day as I looked at an almost perfect flower, and thought how sensual it was. I challenged myself to expand that thought, to make it bloom, into an extraordinary story about a rare plant which is truly sensual and is capable of exuding pleasure.
Many parts of Mary Had A Naval Virgin are based upon events in my own life. I actually was a naval officer cadet, and I did hitch down to my shipmate's home in Kent. And we really did hitch a ride with a man who was almost exactly as I describe him. The events up to a point in the story which you'll easily discern when you read it, even the dialogue, actually happened! And it really was hilarious at the time.
I suppose I could've taken An African Massage a lot further than the short story that it is.
Highland Roots expanded as I wrote, and I started to fall in love with both of the principle characters, Fiona and Bruce. There is so much of me and my own roots in this story too. It could easily have become a novel, but I decided to leave it there and move on.
As for On The Altar, it is absolutely NOT a male fantasy, as some have suggested. This was based on a recurring dream which was described to me in about three lines by a Goodreads friend in North America. She told me that she used to wake up from this dream at exactly the same point every night. That point will be easy to find when you read the story. She'd wake up feeling both very scared and very aroused. She never told me exactly what she imagined would happen next, but she was delighted with the way that I finished the story off for her. So this is actually a female fantasy from a professional woman.
I created the book covers for each of the stories myself. I know that they are not up to top-of-the-market standards, but I can't help feeling rather pleased with them.
I don't read much erotic anymore, but I read part of this book back when I did. Altar and Massage. I thought they were very well done. Altar is different and has a tone of darkness. It's more a woman's fantasy, while Massage would def be aimed at a man's pleasure/fantasy.
There's a little for both here.
Naval is a "nasty" Mary with two "little lambs." LOL I am not into threesomes, but appreciated the ending of this. It made me chuckle and that's why I enjoyed Mr. Greenfield's stories. In the middle of all the heat, he throws in a little joke or innuendo that cracks me up.
I highlighted a few passages that made me smile or laugh, but there are too many to share. Fiona was something else though. A welder with a mouth who strikes fear in men...gotta love that. And this...
"That hardly hurt me at all. Scottish hammer-throwing champion, my ass! You're a big wuss. If feels like a fly just landed on my ass."
(She was getting a spanking...LOL)
This story was funny in more than one spot, but there are two areas of it that will make some readers uncomfortable. I was. BUT, as I said above, there's something for everyone in this.
However, the best story and the most imaginative of all would have to be the first one, in which there is no sex. But the sensuality of the telling makes you have dirty thoughts regardless. It's so subtle, you feel guilty for thinking that way.
"Slowly, her finger disappeared into the exquisite crevice, lubricated by the freely flowing nectar, until it had entirely disappeared from sight."
Get your mind out of the gutter. It's referring to a FLOWER. :p
I'm pretty sure there are no spoilers included in this review but if anyone spots any just comment below and I'll fix it right up.
Overall I'm giving this anthology 4 stars. Mainly because of "Highland Roots". I liked this story the best because there was a little emotional attachment involved in this story. Bruce and Fiona shared the stage quite equally. I loved the draw they had to each other. I liked the fact that they both hadn't had much experience with love before meeting. The story was pretty titillating (except for one or two tiny little things hardly worth mentioning) but they are personal preferences and I wouldn't hold that against the author or let it affect my review. All in all I think it was written well, as were the other stories, (very few typos and exemplary use of English). "When Pleasure Blooms" was unique in that it was somewhat sensual without being too sexually explicit considering no bodies were touched or manipulated during the story. Interesting. "Mary Had a little Lamb" Was stimulating and funny in places. I personally was a little disappointed in the Cadets choice in the end. "African Massage" was good. At the end I was wishing there was time for more story about Tony and his Masseuse. "On The Altar" is one small scene taken from a whole lot of potential. One sexually stimulating scene minus relationship. A mans fantasy! Haha! You go guy!
Well, it took me a while to get around to reading this one, but I'm glad I did! At the time I added it to my "to read" shelf, I hadn't actually read much erotica, having actually had shunned it for years, because of the majority of the low-quality stuff that I expected to be out there, especially after having read a lot of M&B books as a teenager, and then not being particularly interested in the genre for years, until I found myself single... But, all that aside, I guess the wait actually did me good.
I'm not going to rate the stories individually, like I have done in the past with some anthologies, being as they're all by the same author. What I will say is that each story had its own unique style, which is nice to read when it is all by the same author. The book actually built up slowly for me, with my favourites being the last two. I think that all of the stories could have done with a bit more polish, not only on the basic editing front (there were a few grammatical mistakes litered around, but what with having worked in editing in the past, they tend to jump out at me), but also to shorten down some of the story telling, as in places it felt like it was rambling on a bit.
For me, it's also interesting to read stories written by a male author, as most of the previous books I have read have been, not deliberately, written by female authors. It certainly notices in the writing style, the attention focus, how the characters are written... I would like to see if I could find a male author who could give equal balance to the characters of both sexes, as I found the majority of the stories here written obviously from a male perspective. But what keeps the rating up, for me, is the individuality of each story, with many different flavours to be sampled across the board.
Mr. Greenfield, you have written an outstanding group of stories that not only tease the senses but the imagination as well. Every single one has a temptation that drives one to surrender to the desire burning right under the surface. For me, this book needs to come with a warning--toys and towels may be needed.
A definite must read book especially if you want to get a delicious thrill! Read this book if you really want to get your juices flowing in many ways! Enjoy this book and its stories to the fullest, as i have time and time again. For me it is a must read, favorite book and author. This book has sent my imagination into overdrive with some very tense moments causing me to go looking for some privacy and wishing for more toys! i will not tell you how many orgasms these stories gave me, but you can guess all you like. ;)
When Pleasure Blooms Imagine a beautiful flower that promotes calmness, tranquility, and pleasure. Can you imagine having such a flower with petals begging to be stroked? The connection between you both that every light touch, stroke or slow plunge of a finger brings a burst of pleasure and longing. That pleasure just begging to be brought to completion. Will you stay riding the edge of pleasure or ride over the abyss? i say why not both...ride the edge for awhile before going over.
An African Massage
Now that is a massage that I could really enjoy. The thought my body being teased day after day until finally on that last day resulting in a mind blowing orgasm! Although, i'm not sure if i would want to be the one giving or receiving the massage...hmm might have to take turns. Either way, by the end of the torture of several days of teasing the finale would leave me totally relaxed and well satisfied. my only hope would be that I could repeat this massage in the future.
Mary Had a Naval Virgin
A virgin's dreams come true, being with an experienced partner in foreplay and sex, so what if it's a ghost. Can you imagine having sex with the ghost? To be able to touch, stroke, tease, smell and learn from their vast knowledge! Can you imagine how well your own knowledge would grow or heighten your own desire, pleasure and control? This would be a totally awesome experience for someone. i wish that this could be an experience for me to ponder. Who would i choose?
Highland Roots
This story has to be one of my favorites and one that i relate to the most. Or it just might be something about a strong Alpha men and motorcycles. Or maybe it's because this story reminds me about my own motorcycle story.
Fiona travels over to Scotland to continue her research of her heritage. She meets Bruce, who is a distant relative. Bruce wants to compare family trees and offers to show Fiona the area along with places that have special meaning to their ancestors. Fiona may be there to learn more about her ancestors but she gets a lot more than she bargained for at first. The sexual chemistry that brews between Bruce and Fiona from their first meeting only intensifies the more time they spend together. When Bruce takes Fiona for a ride on his motorcycle, Fiona can't resist her urge to find out what is under Bruce's kilt regardless of his warning. Let's just say add a rope, spankings, gorgeous surroundings and a motorcycle is one fantasy that every woman would love to be involved in. i know i definitely would, please?
On The Altar
Can you imagine being the offering on a church altar? With this story, you can be! i know that when i read it, it was me on the altar being offered up. Imagine 8 people surrounding you, preparing you for the beast to claim you. Your experience taking you from one extreme to another; orgasm after orgasm, wish it would never end but know that it will eventually when he can't hold back any longer. All you can do is enjoy the ride for as long as it may last and hope for another round at another time. i know i would probably be begging for more, one can never have enough orgasms!
Since being introduced to Somerset Maugham's books, I've been a fan of short stories. This selection didn't disappoint. Well written with beautiful diction, each left me wanting a bit more - as it should be for a short story in my book! When Pleasure Blooms - ★★★ A very descriptive and cleverly worded story, full of innuendo. An African Massage - ★★.5 An erotic massage indeed although I was a little disappointed that Laura didn't join in:) Mary Had a Naval Virgin - ★★★★ LOL - my favourite story!! Menage, virgins, voyeurism and a titbit of paranormal! This was such an easy read - it flowed so well. Poor Carys and greedy Kenny - lol! This story ended too soon Highland Roots - ★★★ Although I appreciate it is a short story, I felt a little more time spent on the kinks mentioned, would have enhanced it. I enjoyed the chase scene and felt the description of the countryside was well done! On The Altar - ★★★ I enjoyed this story. I like a bit of deja vu, even if it is something that was dreamt, but was she dreaming the reality?
Before writing a novel a writer should sew the seeds of their potential in the dark earth of the short story. It is where the novelist grows and matures and where Lance Greenfield has shown us where his writing might go in the aptly titled "Where Pleasure Blooms."
Here, in five short stories, Greenfield reveals the pleasure of two young navy officers who find the perfect little Magdalene to make up a threesome - every man's desire, or so I'm told. There's Fiona's journey back to the Scottish Highlands and a romance with a distant relative that makes her question her own roots (there's that growing theme again). Not to give too much away, my favourite of the five is Tony's journey into the dark heart of Africa where the writer is at his best, developing his sense of the sensual, without providing the explicit - not easy and powerfully erotic. In sum: a good start and there will be better to come, I'm sure.
What a titillating, immersive, well written collection of short stories. The author really has a way of detailing the encounters that really allows you to sense the building emotions in the characters, even using mundane things such as a flower to tantalize in unexpected ways. Out of all of the stories, "On the Altar" was my favorite as it had that air of mystique. I only wish that some of the other stories were longer, and had a bit more background to them. Not that they need to be, as they are short stories about brief encounters after all, but I wouldn't have minded an expansion of them.
Short stories are not my usual genre, nor is erotica.
My complaint with short stories is that it is really hard to write a good one. The problem is self-made, as there is only a short amount of time / words to put everything essential inside. I still want to get the full character and plot experience. I often only feel teased and left wishing for more.
Now, give me an erotic romance book or a romantic erotica story every day, but if you scratch one of those, I won't really be satisfied. I need romantic feelings to really get involved with the characters. But I also want sexy times. I feel something is missing otherwise. No YA books for me!
Why would I read 'When Pleasure Blooms' if I knew beforehand that it is not my kind of book? Well, it was free for a few days, and I was curious as I had some interaction with the author in one of my groups. Now, I'm feeling a bit bad, cause I have to rate and review it. And of course, considering all I've written before, it can't be a 5 star rating. Sorry.

'When Pleasure Blooms' is a collection of 5 short stories, all with a different theme and with different length. Here are some thoughts concerning the single stories:
When Pleasure Blooms is very short, only a few pages long. It's not really a story, more like an idea. Interesting in itself and definitely unusual.
An African Massage is your erotic massage fantasy come true. The story has a nice erotic build-up, a female masseuse, and lots of orgasms.
Mary Had A Naval Virgin centres around a young man's way into his sexuality. It has an interesting take on this nursery rhyme.
Highland Roots is a kinky, even a bit romantic, story about finding the perfect match.
On The Altar is another short, but very erotic, and unusual fantasy.

So... Here's what I really liked in these stories. The fantasies in itself are really hot and mostly working for me. They are ones I have either myself or can relate to very well. An erotic massage or lying on the altar... yes to that :-) In most of the stories, both male and female are active partners. They give and take. It's not one-sided. I prefer that a lot to books where only one, usually the male, is taking the reins.
I find it interesting that the protagonist has erotic thoughts and/or encounters not only with one partner but with more than one. This needs a bit of getting used to for me.
What I didn't like: I prefer a good build-up in my sex scenes to lots and lots and lots of orgasms. Just give me more details before the climax, if you think the scenes need to be longer. I get bored and find it utterly unrealistic. I am okay with more orgasms in a session, with something happening in between, but just 'she was coming again, and again, and yes another one'... has a negative effect on me. So while I loved the fantasies in itself, I didn't like the written down scenes as much as I would have liked. As I wrote above, the stories felt too short to me. Not enough character building, more telling than showing, awkward rushed dialogue. Concerning telling instead of showing, I don't need to be told that they were aroused by or into each other. I am looking for signs anyway, just give me some hints and I will get it.
Overall, there were parts that I liked or even really liked, but mostly it was ok.
Read When Pleasure Blooms, as my first erotica experience, it is very unique, not something I'd imagine, truly I didn't know what to think. It is actually quite graceful, reminds me Georgia O'Keeffe's flower paintings. But don't get me wrong, it's arousing too. Also, it feels like the first story could be a little longer since you lay out a pretty rich background: African princess, a western botanist, plant research and history, etc. Feels almost like a clip in a movie but not the full movie. Maybe the rest of the book will finish it up. I will keep reading... Thanks Lance :)
This is not what I read and would not normally pick it up except the author is my friend. I am not sure what I expected, but was pleasantly surprised that there were actual stories, and found i actually liked reading them The book was well written and I do appreciate the talent of this author. if you enjoy erotica, I believe you will enjoy this short book.
Even though I am not much of a reader of erotica fiction, I have to say I very much enjoyed Mr.Greenfield's style of writing and I thought his stories were spicy yet tastefully done. If I had to pick a favorite it would be, "Mary had a Naval Virgin." but I pretty much thought they were all hot and smokin. If your a fan of erotica I recommend giving this one a try.
I do not usually read erotica, apart from fifty shades which was mostly curiosity, but this one is written by Lance whose reviews I’m following, so I decided to have a look at it.
It contains 5 small stories which all circles around the erotic act, even though it quite explicit in the descriptions, it’s all done with a delicate taste and a wonderful use of language.
I quite enjoyed it and had to admit being a little aroused at times
