Grim. Gritty. Uncompromising. Ruthless. Damaged. Dangerous.

None of those words describe Leviticus Gold. Instead, try "celebrity". Rock star, actor, author, explorer, sportsman, fashion icon, raconteur, libertine, hedonist... you name it, he's tried it. But a bizarre mid-flight murder sees him attempt to add a new string to his bow: "detective". And he has a very strong incentive to identify the killer - he's the prime suspect!

A short novella, the length of a short story.
Andy is known for his high octane action thrillers and this is a book different from his normal. I've been holding this book for a dozen years now having got the copy within days of its release.

This is an old-fashioned detective story with clues and deduction showing the path to the solution. The characters especially the protagonist Leviticus comes across as an over the top person who would show Poirot as a slob in terms of snobbishness.
The title is inspired from the famous Agatha Christie story and the character of Leviticus is also an amalgamation of several old world detectives but amped up several notches with a lot of bluster as well.

The story is a simple murder mystery inside a plane and is a clinical murder story which stumps the police. The method of arriving at the solution is well thought out and well etched.
Story is believable and plausible and the pace is good. The police are shown in bad light and that is the only complaint as they are put down and shown as people who keep jumping to conclusions.

Overall it is a fabulous story and I enjoyed it.

Agatha Christie will be so conflicted when she reads this one! An excellent detective story but the detective is a polar opposite to anything Agatha whipped up. Of course there is a little bit of Sherlock thrown in (the real Sherlock, not the movie, though even that was awesome!). So he is a little bit of every detective you have ever read of. But he is not.

But here is the best part.

He fits. In today's day and age, he fits right in. He is a hedonist, a success, a workaholic, a charmer - but over everything he is intelligent with a remarkable memory and exceptional observatory skills to boot.

The story, the murder and the solution are also very well written. I would say an excellent entry into a genre so different from the action packed Eddie Chase and Nina Wilde novels (and I enjoy those too).

All in all if you have 2 hours to kill at the airport and you have your smartphone handy, this would not be a bad way to spend them. Even non-readers would enjoy this one.

Can't wait for the next one! And I will absolutely not be surprised if we see this one on the idiot box soon.

Good one Mr. McDermott. Keep them coming!

This is a really good short story which I believe is going to be continued.Good characters which do need some development but plenty of scope and I am looking forward to more.

A delightful locked room Agatha Christie like novella with a charming pompous character.
Wish there was a Leviticus Gold #2 in the works.
