Mau Mau General by Waruhiu Itote gives an interesting look at one of the leaders of the Mau Mau rebellion in Kenya. While the book does not go into as much graphic detail about the brutality of the conflict as some other books on the Mau Mau uprising, it provides a valuable first-person perspective from both a soldier and rebel leader involved in the movement.

For my own interests, one of the most fascinating parts of Mau Mau General was how Itote begins with his service fighting for the British during World War II. The book briefly explores how the military training, combat experience, and exposure to Indian soldiers and conversations about freedom and independence helped shape his later leadership and fighting abilities during the Mau Mau rebellion.

Overall, this was an insightful read that helped connect the experiences of African soldiers during World War II with the rise of anti-colonial movements in Kenya afterward.
