What do you do when you're a bloodthirsty male who thrives on carnage and bloodshed in your novels and your friend on a critique site asks you to read her paranormal romance novel?

If you're like me, you read it out of obligation, figuring you owe it to her for critiquing YOUR book, even though you can't stand the paranormal romance genre.

So you read it. And as you check out the Prologue, you think 'Damn son, I think she has something GOOD here!'

And so it was that my first foray into the Paranormal Genre category (besides a halfassed attempt at Twilight) yielded an intense read full of the action and mayhem I come to love in my Urban Fantasy novels.

But don't be disappointed, genre fans. The romance is alive and well in this book as well. However, unlike traditional Romance/Paranormal Romance stories where the protagonist's relationship woes and unrequited angst floods every page, Gabriel offers an action-packed, intensely paced ride to serve as the backdrop of a match made in heaven...literally.

When selfless nurse Calla Stevens finds an injured (as in injured by the giant knife sticking out of his chest) man in a dark alley, her instincts drive her to try to save him. She is, after all, a healer. I know, you say, you just told us she's a nurse...

Well, there's more to Calla than meets the eye. Using a special power she discovered at a very young age, she heals the man. But healing him takes a toll on her stamina and she passes out.

When she wakes up in bed in a strange and dilapidated building, she realizes there's more to the man than meets the eye also. In fact, he's an angel. Literally. She learns of the demonic Kematians and their attempt to use humanity for a source of food.

Through a tenuous beginning, Calla and Gabriel take the fight to the Kematians and find out that throughout the darkness of life shines a love greater than evil.

I recommend this action filled romance to people who are looking for a good intense story with a soft spot. You never know what destination awaits the end of this fast paced ride. You might be surprised to find a new genre in your to-read lists.

I really wanted to like this book. I appreciate what an accomplishment it is to write a book and get it published.

The plot was good. Long ago there were endless battles between the archangels and the demons. The demons regenerated so quickly that the five angels could not overcome them. With the help of God, the angels were able to imprison the demons within the earth. For millenniums the archangels took turns standing guard until an earthquake released the demons. And so the archangels set themselves to battling the demons again, knowing that they had a nearly impossible task ahead of them.

Some months later, the angel who had been guarding the demons at the time of the earthquake, Gabriel, is conquered by the demons and left for dead. A human woman with the gift of healing finds him, repairs him, but is weakened by her efforts and falls unconscious.

Gabriel falls instantly in love with her but soon after chooses to stay away for her protection. This woman doesn't let anyone make her decisions for her though and she is no coward (THANK YOU! I love strong women characters!). Unfortunately, courageous but uninformed leaves her vulnerable and she is attacked and poisoned by the demons.

The really clever part is how this brings together Gabriel, Calla and her doctor friend with government scientist connections and who might just be able to find a way to defeat the demons. I really love that aspect of the story--- that the archangels must work with humans to win.

Plot: 3 stars. It could be more original, it had very strong similarities to Sherrilyn Kenyon's Dark Hunters series.

Character development needed some work. Having characters fall in love instantly without reason might move the story along, but it does not make them "real". Gabriel's character especially seemed to suffer from not knowing exactly what his personality was. Was he old as time and wise? Or was he old and so sheltered from humanity as to be innocent? Were he and the archangels old fashioned in their speech or likely to say "Sick of getting my ass kicked".

With most characters, the development relied on the reader simply accepting that this is the way the characters would act or who they were because the author told us so, not because the evidence was there.

Character Development: 2 stars

What made this book the hardest to get through was the dialogue and style of writing. A story is only as good as its telling, and this one needed serious help.

For instance, after Calla saves Gabriel and he awakes to find the unconscious woman:

He glanced down at his golden chest and extended his long arms and massive hands. There was not a mark on him.
"I suppose you have something to do with my recover," He said. "I can't just up and leave you in this alley now, can I?"

The dialogue is very awkward, and that's without Gabriel swinging back and forth between proper/old fashioned speech patterns and more casual/contemporary speech patterns.

There is endless banter, even when it doesn't seem to fit into the scenes or the relationship.

But the really awkward part, for me, was how the book would sometimes lean towards heavy religious overtones/spiritual questions/sincere prayer and then shortly after fall into erotic/somewhat pornographic scenes.

Dialogue/scene style/etc.: 1 star

Favorite Line(s) An angel walked into her life and right out. Why did she feel such a loss for someone she barely know?
I don't usually put 2 favorite lines but I have to put this one too
YES DEAR

Everyone knows I love me some Angels books and Gabriel was fabulous! It was filled with love, laughter, faith, kicking butt, and of course some amazing ANGELS! Gabriel is an archangel tasked with killing the Kematian Demons (along with his brothers) while fighting one night he gets hurts and was almost dead when Calla finds him and heals him. You know I won't tell you what happens but, it's a great story. I really enjoyed watching Gabriel trying to figure out Calla since she is a modern woman. There were parts were I laughed until I cried and other parts were I cried with heartbreak! It's was a amazing story and a wonderful beginning to this series. I look forward
to reading more from this fabulous author.

This book was different from anything I've read here lately. It was "Biblical" without being preachy. It was very fast paced. Almost too fast paced though. I felt like the two main characters fell in love way too fast. I really wanted to see their relationship build more. In fact, I wanted more character development in all the characters. I did like how we didn't have to wait for 'action'...the book was full of it from beginning to end. There were some nice little twists involving the Kematians too. I am anxious to read the next book and see what else is in store for the Archangels and humanity.

I'm in an angels mood of reading lately and I like the beginning of this series. Putting this author on my list of ones to watch. Excellent combination of great writing, romance, and a sexy hero.

4 and a half stars!

In this story you meet and fall in love with the ever learning of how to use sarcasm – Archangel Gabriel. Who long ago, he and his brothers were in charge of keeping watch of the prisoners they were holding “The Kematians”, winged-demon like creatures who are Hell bent on destroying all of humankind. Then suddenly an earthquake destroys their prison and they escape. Now Archangel Gabriel and his brothers must separate and hunt them down all over again. Gabriel who was on duty during the time of their escape of course feels responsible and now carries this burden heavily on his shoulders feeling as tho he's failed his brothers and their “Almighty Father”.

Our Heroine Calla is an ER nurse, who one night walking home after her shift see's a man in an alley (Gabriel) needing assistance. Naturally her instincts to help kick in and when she rolls him over, she see's that he's unconscious and has been stabbed by some sort of green glowing knife, (the “Nex Addo – which later we find out is an Angel killing blade”). After she gets it out of him she has to stop the wound from bleeding. Here we find out Calla isn't just a normal human being. – Ooooh neat!!! – After she heals him with everything she has, she passes out from exhaustion. When Gabriel awakens (miraculously, since he knew what he was stabbed with) and finds this woman laying on top of him he knows he's only alive thanks to her. Seeing as how he can't leave his savior alone and unconscious in an alley, he takes her with him. When she wakes up, their conversation was pretty comical and eventually they part ways. This whole book had a lot of snarky humor from Calla! I Love that! Makes me think that this is how the author could talk to some of her friends ha!

Then when Calla gets an up close and personal greeting from one of these demons she knows she's in a world of trouble. Even tho Gabriel and Calla haven't known each other long at all, he knows deep in his heart that this woman is his soul mate, so when he felt her life force fading away he hurried to where she was. He see's that she's been bitten and that the poison from the Kematian flows within her. Giving her his gift of life he's able to keep her alive, but can't stop the transition that's already started to take place. – Later on with this scene I got some flashbacks of Regan from “The Exorcist”, I loved it.

I like how the story started out, getting the history between the Archangels and the Kematians. And when we come into the present seeing how Gabriel adjusts with the change in time and people, he has a heck of a time learning how to tell when people are being sarcastic and using it back with them. Poor guy, haha!

There's a lot of characters to get to know in this story, and they all make it work really well. They were all favorites but I really want to know more about Michael /wink, can't wait to read his story (if he's getting one) he's very alpha and mysterious. I Actually felt like I read a much longer book than what it really was. Ms. Pollick did a great job with this plot and leading it up to the end. I loved the fight scenes, humor, and the twist of how some of the Kamatians were once human, was pretty neat.

Can't wait for more!

A line from the book that I really liked!

“Nice to meet you, Gabriel. If you're the reason my friend dies ' your ass is grass, and I'm the lawnmower” - Sam … I've never heard that saying and I died laughing after reading it, hahaha!

I received Gabriel as a prize in a fun giveaway directly from the author, whose brilliant mind and the books that come out of it I adore. After reading Shadow Of Hope, I was totally stoked to dig into Gabriel. I have had this lined up to read for a couple of weeks now, but with everything going on, it was put on the backburner until yesterday when I finally had time to sit down and finish it.

I loved it. Tina might laugh at me. Her books always give me moments of feeling uncomfortable because things that happen in the books go against what I’ve been raised to believe. I personally enjoy that, when a book challenges me like that. When we are talking spirituality, that can make you squirm just a wee bit. I squirmed. Gabriel is unlike any depiction of any angel I have ever learned about, especially being that he is an archangel, one of God’s warriors.

He is definitely a warrior. There is tons of action in Gabriel. It is fast paced and a quick read, 234 pages fly by. Add to that fact that no one writes a love scene like Tina does. Hot.

I think the demons were portrayed perfectly too. I can see the story of how these Kematians came to be being how demons are and how some demons are formed. There’s a twist too concerning them that you won’t see coming that I loved. That twist added an extra dimension to the battle scenes. You’ll see what I mean when you get to it.

The only thing I wished for in this book was more development of the relationship between Calla and Gabriel. It was kind of warp speed, wow, how’d that happen. Then again, Gabriel is an angel, maybe that’s how they do things. Decisively and fast.

Other than that one thing I would have wanted more of, I loved the book and I can’t wait to read the next book I have sitting here on my iPad from her.

Wait! you say. There is another book? Yes! There is! Soul Broker is already listed on Amazon. You can’t buy it yet, but it’s there. That is going to be on my Friday Reads list this week if I don’t get to it today or tomorrow. I can’t wait. I love Tina’s writing style. She is able to combine action packed drama with a love story that melts your heart.

Thank you Tina for sending me over a copy of Gabriel to enjoy!

The first book in a series is always a little tricky, especially for a new author. It has to be good enough to interest those reading it in coming back for more - to read the rest of the series - but not so good that the other books might look a little pale compared to it. It is not an easy line to balance on but Tina Pollick seems to have done it!

Another important thing about a series is that you must meet and be interested in the lives of more than just the main hero/heroine in the current book. For instance in this book we meet Gabriel, an archangel and one of seven archangel "brothers" charged with the (almost) defeat and subsequent incarceration of the Kematian demons. We know that these brothers were charged with defeating the Kematian's but they were also charged with protecting humanity from them while they were at war.

Gabriel and his 6 brothers have been taking shifts, watching over the subterranean prison these demons were trapped in.
We also meet Michael and Raphael, two of Gabriel`s archangel brothers.

Playing catch up with reviews and this one seems to be the first on my list. Why? Well, because I have no clue why this got published. Not to be a dick or anything, but the plot had more holes in it than swiss cheese, and the character development wasn't there at all. I found that the author forced the two into love, when it really wasn't there. It is a lot of work to write a book and I get that. However, here is a case where the author should have taken more time to understand what they were writing about and less worrying about getting the book published. It seemed way too much of a "attempt in biting" off of Sherrlyn Kenyon or Larissa Ione's series. Had a bit of originality came into play, I probably would have given it two stars. Probably.

Hopefully she'll have more luck on the next one.

GABRIEL (KEMATIAN HUNTER) by Tina Pollick
PUBLISH DATE: January 22, 2103
REVIEW BY: Reading In Pajamas/Donna
RATED: 4 Stars

REVIEW:
Calla’s very modern day “prove it to me” attitude was evident when she was hesitant to believe in angels even though she carried a special healing ability within her. Gabriel lived his whole existence loving mankind as a whole and was unprepared for the feelings he had for her. Their struggle to come to grips with their growing emotions grew with their struggle to stay alive. You can tell that the author is very sentimental and has strong religious beliefs. It was a pleasure to see how she wove all that in with a paranormal romance. I enjoyed it!

Gabriel is the first book in Tina Pollicks Kematian series. Archangel Gabriel was injured during a fight with Kematians(demons) and nurse Calla healed him. Soon afterwards she was attacked and bitten, Gabriel saved her but she was infected and now together they are trying to find the cure and fight the demons.

I really enjoyed this book.It was fast paced maybe too fast but great world building, great characters and great romance.I loved the whole Archangel fell in love with mere mortal. Can't wait for the next one!!

It's entirely possible it would have ended up being a good book. Really. Unfortunately I didn't manage to read more than 20 pages. The writing is amateurish at best. Both main characters talk and react like teenagers and the editing needs work. All in all there was nothing I actually liked here apart from the main idea.

Gabriel is an emotional, action-packed story of angels and demons swirling around a strong, colorful female protagonist. The bad guys could’ve used a little more attention, but in the main, Tina’s tale has everything a reader of paranormal action-romance could want, served up in fine, vivid style.
