Assassins #1

Slow Burn

Rate this book
Beautiful Disaster meets Nikita.

Leigh Thorn is hiding out in a backwoods college because her father put her in danger, and if the wrong people find her, she’s dead. She’d rather snort lines than think about that. She’d rather do shots of marshmallow-flavored vodka until she can’t remember.

When Griffin Fawkes arrives with the news that her father’s dead, she isn’t sure if she cares. He wasn’t much of a father anyway. The only silver lining here is that Griffin’s jaw-droppingly gorgeous, and Leigh wants him bad.

Griffin owes his life to Leigh's father. The man begged him to keep his daughter safe. But Griffin didn't expect a cocaine-fueled party girl who barely seems to care about her own safety. It seems like she'd rather destroy herself than anything else.

Even worse, he didn't expect he'd care about her. He knows he's too damaged to ever really be with a woman. The best he can do is to make sure she’s safe from whoever could hurt her. Including herself. Including himself.

Of course, fighting off men with guns is starting to seem easier than keeping his hands off Leigh.

Book 1 in duet, rest of series stand-alones.

BLURB:
Griffin Fawkes:

They made him a killer.

They made him ruthless, callous, efficient.
And now, he knows he’s too damaged to ever be with a woman.
Especially not one as beautiful as Leigh Thorn.
He might want to press her into the wall, claim her lips and touch her skin, but he won’t.
Instead, he will use his skills to protect her. Nothing more.

Leigh Thorn:

If the wrong people find her, she’s dead.
But all she wants to do is snort lines and shoot marshmallow-flavored vodka until everything’s bliss.
Griffin says he’s there to protect her.
Near as she can tell, he’s only raining on her parade.
Sure, he’s gorgeous. Solid and taut and rippling and…
That doesn't give him the right to order her around.

Why it did not work for me.

Heroine sleeps with random guys and does not even know their names. She like to drink and party heavy. There is a sci-fi element...something about super soldiers, but I am not sure about that. I could not connect with the characters so I gave up.

Full review to come soon BUT in the meantime...

Griffin *STARS IN MY EYES* !!! He's so tough but so broken inside... AND MY GOD I LOVED HIM!!!! I mean I loved EVERYTHING about him.... I like want me a Griffin NOW!!!

And I just gotta say, "Beautiful Disaster meets Nikita" is pretty spot on... but THANK GOD not a "pigeon" in site! Although Griffin did keep referring to Leigh as "doll"... have I mentioned HOW MUCH I melted every time he did that? Coz, yeah... I TOTALLY melted... *SIGH*... I'll stop rambling now, coz I need to sleep, but I'll write the review when I get up.

When a book's title says "slow burn" you can count me intrigued. However, if the book starts with a heroine kicking out her one night stand and later snorting said one night stand's cocaine, you can guarantee that I do not want to read about her. Too bad that I'm a lousy blurb reader at times.

The author also mentioned some sort of serum that made people kind of immortal in ways that it's very difficult to kill them and while I may be kind of ready to believe this in some sort of made up world, I am not ready to read about a man who's been injected with said serum and who pretty much gives up everything to protect the heroine. This silly heroine who's ready to do anything for her next kick and who doesn't really acknowledge that there might be danger and that there might be bad people out there.

I am simply not ready to aggravate myself more even if the romance does end up kind of slow-burn-ish.

I have a feeling this could b a love it or hate it type of book. I liked that it kept me guessing. It was very unpredictable. So many books follow the same formula: love hate then love. I often find myself calling the heroine a dumb bitch in other books. I never felt that way. Leigh made some poor choices that put her in danger but I understood why she made those choices. She wasn't just being naive and a... Dumb bitch :) This shit is raw and def not for the faint of heart. There are some heavy topics addressed. I liked that too cuz life is raw. It was refreshing to read a love story that had action too. Not just people going back and forth about their weak ass feelings. Leigh and Griffin were falling in love while dealing with their issues AND being chased by crazy people and killing them along the way. That's hard core.

It was just okay for me. I couldn't relate to Leigh at all. Who is stupid enough to be doing coke when she knows someone is after her? Why should I be in that persons corner and hoping for their survival?

Sheesh this book was horrible. I felt like I was reading something written by a 12 year old. Nothing about this book entertained me. The male constantly calling the female "Doll" and every single choice she made made want want to punch her in the face. Don't even know what else to say.

I think I'm in love...seriously this author gets me EACH. AND. EVERY. TIME! I LOVED her Jason and Azazel books and I LOVED THIS ONE (seeing a theme here?). This story was gritty, raw, adrenaline pumping, hot and sexy...it had it all. Some people may not like the fantasy element to the love story, but that's what I enjoy about V.J. Chambers' books. There's always that part of it that is completely unrealistic but she grounds it in the absolute realism of her characters. So, well done Ms. Chambers.

3.5 Stars which I'm bumping to four because Slow Burn features a very sensitive portrayal of m/m rape which is a topic that should not be swept under the carpet. In the media at the moment, there is a lot of outcry at a certain film producer's behaviour towards women. This is absolutely disgusting but we mustn't forget that men can be victims of sexual assault too. The next time I hear a joke about dropping the soap, this is what I shall be thinking about.

I have very mixed feelings about Slow Burn. It was much grittier than is really my taste. Too much blood and guts. The only characters I liked were killed off in chapter nine. Everyone else was pretty revolting, albeit often for understandable reasons. I simply have very little interest in reading about a rich, cocaine-addicted party girl, no matter that she acts out because of some very poor parenting.

Unlike some reviews I've read, however, I'm not upset about the heroine being very sexual. So what? There's really no need to slut-shame and actually the parts of the book which were slut-shaming pissed me off quite a lot, at first - '"You're nothing but a cheap drug-addled whore and I can't believe I put my dick in you."' '"Obviously you have daddy issues. He never loved you, so you sought the attention of all kinds of boys, but you were so much of a slut that none of them wanted you."' - until I realised that these views are never presented as being correct. They're given in anger, called out and largely apologised for later.

And this is what I liked about Slow Burn. The attitudes. Sexism, for example: '"I'm a guy," he said. "I pay attention to things like tents." "What does being a guy have to do with it?" I said.' '"When I was a kid, I was interested in how to steer a car and in the gearshift. My sister was only interested in what colour it was." I glared at him. "That is so sexist."'

I liked the humour too. '"So this is what it's going to be like," I said. "I'm going to be so bored out of my skull that I'll want to die just to break up the monotony."' - '"You're vegan, huh?" I asked. She smiled. "Yeah. Six months now." "Isn't that the amount of time you've been sober?" I said. She nodded. "Yup. Jack and I gave up meat, eggs, milk and blow all at the same time."... "We were going to quit smoking too," said Jack, "but we decided it would be too much to handle."' - '"Besides, I have no problem with running while I'm being chased. It's just the exercising for fun that I don't really understand."'

Chambers has bravely tackled a topic that is rarely broached: male rape. Although I'm ambiguous as to whether I really liked Slow Burn, I want to applaud her for handling this so sensitively. To end my review, I'm going to share with you the part of the book that sticks out the most for me. It's horrible but so well done.

'"You know, when we were playing that drinking game at your house. Never have I ever given a blow job." Oh. Oh, God. I shut my eyes against it. " I should have taken a drink." "No," I said, and I moved around to face him. "Because it's not the same thing. You didn't give anything. People just took it."His eyes looked bright, like there were tears trapped in them. I wanted to hold him, to engulf him. But he was too tall, too much bigger than I was. I led him back to the bed. I pulled him down with me, and he crawled into my arms, his head against my breasts, his arms wrapped around my waist. I cradled him, trying to hold as much of him as I could. His shoulders shook. But he didn't make any noise."

V. J. Chambers Blog ist untertitelt mit '...a little bit of love and a lot more of blood' und das sagt eigentlich auch schon alles über ihre Bücher.

This book was not what I expected. And unfortunately I don't mean that in a good way. Based on the blurb, I was expecting something along the lines of a romance with a mafia princess who needs protection from rivals. Without giving too much away, what I was left reading was a full on sci-fi with almost no romance. Normally I would be ok with the main plot being what it turned out to be. But in this case, there was just too much wrong to overlook. The writing seemed...off. When Griffin was speaking, the words didn't seem like things he would be saying. He is supposed to be a hardened criminal and assassin, but would sometimes speak like he was an 18 year old girl. And the timeline kept skipping forward, almost like it was an abridged version of the book. And occasionally those time jumps seemed like they had vital plot points in them. The lack of morals, family values and self respect of the main characters was just the icing on a poorly made cake. Not a book that I would recommend, and I can't say that I'll be continuing the series.

Wow, this book has it all...mystery, despair, healing, romance, sex. And the combination of it and the characters even brought tears to my eyes. I really thought Griffin's character was so sad and dark. It was easy to see from the beginning that Leigh was different to him. However, with all the twists and turns, it was hard to see if they'd get a HAE. Leigh was your typical rich girl who was ignored by daddy, however with the thought of having nobody left to turn to, she had no choice but to trust the only person who knew what was going on. I don't want to go too much into the details of the story because I don't want to give anything away since there is so many surprises in the book...and ones you need to have surprise you to get the full effect. I LOVED this book and couldn't put it down. Read it in a day. Really would like more about Leigh and her future...

From Daddy, With Love💘

Griffin🐺🍌🌋💪🔪🔫 and Leigh💋💔, what a combo. Both are nearly indestructible because of a secret serum💉 developed for military use to make super soldiers. Instead it was used by the corrupt developers to build a team of young assassins🔪🔫 who were then psychologically twisted to suit them for that purpose. All for money💰, power, and revenge. Op Wraith👻
Leigh💋💔 wasn't part of that world until she was dying from a drug💊 and alcohol🍸 fueled car wreck and her father, Frank, the serum developer, stole some from the Company, and injected her💉 with it to save her life.
What a life to save.... She was and still is on a path to self destruction. Drugs💊, dangerous life choices, indiscriminate promiscuousness, she has even gotten close to suicide.
All she thinks about is snorting💊, drinking🍸, parties🍺, and party boys.
She hasn't seen her father in years, she just calls him at appointed times on a secret ☎phone kept in a safe deposit 📦box.
Some of the young assassins🔫 have gone rogue, they don't want to be assassins. Other assassins🔪🔫 have been sent to kill them. They have been sent to capture Leigh💔 at all costs, her father wants her safe.

Griffin, 6'4" of handsome🐺🍌🌋 sex appeal and ripped,💪 twisted steel🔫🔪, is sent by her father to protect her from the other assassins. The only way to kill the serum💉 modified men is to sever their spinal cord🔪. Shooting🔫 them or stabbing🔪 them takes them down for a while, but they heal quickly.
Griffin🐺💪🍌🌋🔪🔫 is rough and gruff, but He vows to protect Leigh💋💔 with his life. He's an ingenious MacGyver, hot wiring vehicles, picking locks. They are two broken people💔, on the run, thrown together by terrible deadly circumstances.

There is a lot of violence in this book, 👊fist fights, stabbings🔪, shootings🔫, torture. Griffin🐺💪🍌🌋🔫🔪 does it all in an attempt to keep Leigh safe and on the run with him. He also spends a lot of time and effort rescuing Leigh💋🔥💔 from herself.

I did find Leigh's stubbornness and hardheadedness, even stupidity at times, to be very tiresome after a while. This well written book lost a star because of the constant dangerous situations she put herself into for no reason.

The book does Not end in a cliffhanger, but there is a second book that continues their struggles.

YEHAW! Ride em Bareback🍌, Cowgirl!🐎🐎🐎🐎

"The Killing Moon" trilogy was good and so I had high hopes for this one . . . unfortunately for me, I was let down. Leigh is a typical hard-partying college student except for one minor detail -- she's in hiding in a small town because her father gave her a super-soldier serum after she was injured in a car accident. His employers aren't happy with him using the formula for personal use and so he sent her into hiding. When she's no longer able to contact him, she fears the worst. This is validated when Griffin shows up and tells her that her father is dead and he's now going to protect him. Griffin has received the same serum and it seems at first like this will be a major element in the plot but basically it's not that significant other than allowing both Leigh and Griffin to receive major injuries throughout the book and quickly recover.

Leigh is a lot to take. I am not quick to accuse characters of being TSTL because I know that there's all kinds of people in the world and we all respond to stressful situations in different ways. But Leigh demonstrates a disregard for her own survival that is alarming and confusing. She's told that a major corporation has super soldiers out looking for her and her only concern is still the next party or the next line of drugs. Her decisions frequently put others at risk. Like, if you knew your drug dealer sold you out to killers and you were then shot, would you make small talk with him when you saw him again at another party and not follow up on it at all?

I know that Chambers can write an effective slow burn story because I've read her do it before, but the one here simply didn't work for me. Griffin's PTSD related to sex and Leigh's responding aggressiveness wasn't fun for me to read -- more seasoned dark romance readers may like the high pressure here, but I didn't.

It Has It All

If you are bored with predictable romance novels, please allow me to introduce you to not only the ups and downs but the over and under and around and through of the life of Leigh and Griffin. Leigh is a coked up, promiscuous college girl whom we soon find is being pursued by men who make an attempt to kidnap/kill her. Enter Griffin, her newly acquired but self appointed bodyguard. The story from there is anything but boring or predictable. There are many surprises, not the least of which is just to say that Leigh, Griffin and others are somewhat HARD TO PUT DOWN!! So is the book, I mean, hard to put down. Really good read and I will be looking for more in this series.

This book was not what I was expecting. The blurb made is sound like a damsel in s distress was needing protection and in reality it’s more of a Sci Fi book about almost invincible assassins with a little “romance” thrown in. You can shoot these guys but unless you sever their spinal columns they’ll come back to life 🤷‍♀️ I didn’t connect with any of the characters at all. Just not my mind of book at all.

Good read

This was a book outside of my normal comfort zone. However it kept me interested and it felt like it could be a movie it was so surreal. The author did a good job expressing the vulnerability of these externally beautiful characters by shedding light on their insecurities and experiences that affected them internally.

Fantasies, Facts and Functional Survivorship

Leigh and Griffin gave us a thrilling and mind-boggling tale to read with a little sociology and psychology thrown into the mix. This book came from the mind of a very imaginative writer. I look forward to reading the next book from this author.
