While in many ways I found this book to be a good introduction to secular humanism, I was annoyed by a few things. Primarily it was the many tangents pursued. The author would put forth a concept and opine that it was not central to secular humanism (which I found informative and valuable) but then proceed down that tangent in a lengthy manner, often expounding on his own personal position on the superfluous concept. Of less concern to me (because it did little to detract from my understanding of the subject matter) were the numerous grammar problems. This included lots of poor sentence structure (that could be cured with proper use of punctuation) as well as verb tense errors and such. I can't tell how much of this might be due to poor OCR in scanning from a printed text or how much the author is to blame, but there was a clear need for an editor and proof reader.

All that aside, I would recommend the book to those seeking an introduction to the subject. It solidified my long-held suspicion that I am fundamentally a secular humanist.

If your looking to find a philosophy that doesn't involve something supernatural, yet something that isn't passive as being a simple atheist, this book is concise on explaining Secular Humanism. It details the principles and ethics without the need for a divine being, and strives to put ones faith in science, reason, and humanity. My only complaint were that there were a few typos in spite of the fact that I had a second edition.

The only saving grace in this book was that there were some very good concepts and decent information. The 2-star rating is for that alone. Beyond the information, I have to say that is was one of the most painful reads ever. Poor sentence structure, repetitive and circular writing and grammar that at times wouldn't live up to the standards of a 9th grade English / writing class were among the issues. For me, the grammatical issues were far worse than the information was good.
