Shelly just wanted her life to change. Coming out of a bad divorce, she thought a new city and a new job were going to be just what she needed. A night of fun with old friends turns sour when she wakes up – days later – to find the entire world has become a living nightmare and the majority of its inhabitants are walking corpses with a violent need to kill. It wasn't the change she was looking for, and it left Shelly with just one horrifying question – is this the end?
So you should know that I received a free copy of this book for a fair and honest review.
This book is not for everyone, nor would I recommend it for everyone. It is violent, gruesome, and our protagonist Shelly has a few borderline personality issues. Having said that, it is also well written, action-packed, and well worthy of 4 stars, in my humble opinion, for zombie-horror fiction.
A recent divorcee, Shelly awakens to a world turned into zombies, or grinners, after a blood-red night-sky knocks the world on its butt. Quick to take matters into her own hands, Shelly sets out to rescue her younger brother Michael. Along her quest, she encounters a variety of people, including an old mate who quickly becomes zombie food, two annoying teenage girls, a young Cajun with a crush, and a police dog named Trigger. Of all these people, Shelly would rather save Trigger than anyone else. All the rest, she's ready to cut loose at the first sign of trouble, particularly if she thinks it will get in the way of her lost cause - rescuing her younger brother.
As much as I enjoyed the book, I did not really like Shelly at all. I couldn't understand why she would choose to walk 2 miles to the convenience store to open a can of peaches when she knew she could just knife it open but didn't want to cut her hand. I couldn't understand how she could drink beer in a house that had cockroaches on the fridge and maggots in the sink - and that was before the grinners showed up! And I also couldn't understand Shelly's proclivity towards vomit - it seemed like every chapter she was vomiting or close to it.
Yes, can you tell I didn't like good ol' Shell? And I really don't think it was because she tried to act tough, because I get that. I just genuinely didn't see her as a nice, or a smart person. Now our Cajun Cyr, and good ol' Trigger - there were some partners.
The action and pacing of the book were great - I was never bored, and kept wanting to read late into the night to see what would happen next. Lots of blood and death and the stench of decay. Stay away if you get nauseaous easily, that's for sure. There are a few editorial issues throughout the book - common mistakes like its/it's, their/there, fowl/foul - that could use a quick clean up, but nothing that detracted from my overall enjoyment of this great read. Recommended!
There were some things I didn't like about this book but they didn't matter. I always wanted to know what would happen next. It was interesting. Grinners has a lot of Girl Power in it, which isn't a bad thing. I was just like, "Wow, that's some Girl Power right there," often. Some of the dialogue was awkward, there were a few editing issues and there was some melodrama but at no point did I ever want to stop reading. The pacing was excellent. There were also some great interpretations of zombie genre norms and a very funny argument over what music was to be played in the car. Finch's style is easy to read as well. I got my copy for free but I bought one after I finished. Good book!
I borrowed this book from Amber's father, my husband's Uncle Randy. He was telling me about this book his daughter wrote, knowing that I am an a BIG book nut, and asked if I would read it. I told him "Of-course" and ever since I got the book in my hands I couldn't put it down! Yes, there are a few typoes, but nothing to take away from the story line. My daughter, Marissa, which doesn't read that much, stole the book away from me and finished it before I did. Of course she had more time on her hands then I did, but she loved it as much as I did. This is Amber's first book to be published and she did a wonderful job. I heard that the book is set up for a sequel .... I hope that this is true (once I finish it I will know for sure) because of how much I am enjoying it. I recently got into a reading slump and nothing was sounding appealing to me. I am so glad Randy recommend that I try Amder's book. It was just what I was needing .... I good book to get me out of this slump and it did just that. WELL DONE AMBER! I can't wait to read more books in the future from you. My daughter & I are now big fans of your. We are and will contiue to recommend your book/books to everyone and get your book out there for everyone to read. :)
Grinners, by Amber Finch, is my kind of zombie apocalypse book. It is an action packed survival tale that hardly stops to let you breathe. From the time I saw the cover, to the time I finnished the last page, I put it down once, and only long enough to have supper with my wife.
The heroine, Shelly, is written tough as nails. If the world were about to end, you could do worse than have her on your team. Finch teases with some glimpses into Shelly's back story, but what really makes her tick will have to wait until the sequel.
As much as I love a good adventure yarn, I actually could have done with some more back story. While this was primarily a story about people reacting to a situation outside of their control or experience, the reasons the characters are reacting the way they do are often left unclear.
Finch struggles a little with setting too. There are several scenes when a lot was happening and I got lost in the action. Not being from Texas, I sometimes found it hard to picture where the story was taking place.
Overall though, I feel like Amber Finch has the page-turner touch. I'm jealous. I am also anxiously awaiting the sequel.
Excellent book. Relentless fast paced action from start to finish. Amber gives us Shelley, a downtrodden woman, who escapes from the city and her past. Unfortunately the whole world is ripped apart by a zombie apocalypse where the undead are known as grinners. Shelley must survive at any cost. In short she becomes cold and ruthless. The characters are well written and none are Hollywood style super heroes. The situations she faces are horrifyingly well created and nothing is too brutal or taboo. This was definitely my kind of zombie book. ZA needs to feel hopeless, terrifying, where characters either fight to live or they die. Most importantly it needs to feel realistic with believable characters making believable decisions. Very excited about the sequel.
Such a GREAT BOOK. I started it this morning and could not stop until I finished. I have not read like that in a very long time. I can hardly wait for book 2. I may have to read it again just because it is that good and to see if I missed anything. GREAT JOB!! I ENJOYED EVERY MINUTE OF GRINNERS by AMBER FINCH.
I'll put it simply- this book is phenomenal! Admittedly, it took me a couple chapters to really get into, but once I was hooked, I didn't want to put it down. A constant sense of suspense and anticipation keeps you on the edge of your seat the whole way through, and the only downside that I could name is that the ending leaves you hungry for more. The sequel can't come fast enough!
I did enjoy the book.. I did want to see what happened to Shelly and Cyr, I thought the ending was really abrupt. It just stopped, I did not care for that, but it kept me interested enough to read next book
