Firefighter Chris Paytah has been in the business of battling flames for nearly two decades, but nothing he’s faced could have prepared him for the worst thing he could have ever imagined: losing the man that taught him everything he knows. Now he’s got to find a way to pick up the pieces, as well as take up the reins as captain of a new fire station in Calvin’s place.
Martie Liotta is the arson investigator assigned by the Montana Bureau of Fire Safety to investigate the fire that led to a 30-year veteran’s death. She’s hoping that she’ll find evidence tying the fire to a shady businessman who happens to be the owner of the burned-out building — and is already suspected of insurance fraud. She’s completely unprepared to find herself instantly attracted to Chris, or for the passion that ignites between them to burn so hot.
While the two of them work to discover the cause of the fire, they’re also navigating the precarious terrain of their new relationship. But someone with a more than passing interest in the beautiful Martie causes her to doubt her judgment, leading her to make a terrible decision that drives Chris away in anger. Can he overcome the hurt in time to save her and an innocent woman from suffering at the hands of a madman with a dangerous obsession?

A complete adrenaline rush. I couldn’t put it down.
Now that I got that off my chest, let’s get on with the review.
Fire Born is a full-length novel which skirts that fine line between thriller and romance. In fact, the emotional involvement of the two main characters adds to the thrill and makes it all the more realistic.
The story begins with a crew attending a fire. A lot happens, and the action is there, but for an uninitiated, like me, it felt like a lot of information to take in. Fear not, as this soon settles into a perfect rhythm, and we get swept along with the investigation into the cause of the fire. All is not what it seems, and what initially looked like faulty wiring takes a more sinister turn. No, I’m not telling you any more; read for yourselves.
The plot is brilliantly thought-out. There were so many twists and turns, enough to keep me guessing, and even when I thought I had my answer, I still didn’t believe it and was fooled into looking in the wrong direction. I thoroughly enjoyed that.
The descriptions were good and provided the perfect canvas for my mind’s picture to roll against. Characterization – again, I couldn’t fault it. I fell in love with every single one of the characters – except the bad guys – and though the sudden spark between Chris and Martie seemed unlikely, it was beautifully portrayed; I wanted it to be real, for their sakes. The dialogues flowed naturally. I felt like I was part of the team, part of the family of fire-fighters, part of the community, and I felt welcome and comfortable there.
The action scenes were numerous and fast-paced. And then a mad man’s obsession turns extreme and the pace increases further. This is an author who knows how to build up tension. The respites come in the form of romance which develops at a steady, unstoppable pace. There are some scenes to make you blush, and they’re tastefully written.
The resolution is powerful and very satisfying. I was entertained, horrified, amused, saddened and then hopeful and happy again – a huge range of emotions, and they all felt real. Fire Born was a very enjoyable read. I fully recommend it to anyone who prefers an action-packed storyline and doesn’t mind putting their work on hold to find out what happens next. I can only award it five very well-deserved stars.
A very well written story makes you feel as if you are part if it. And this darlings, I was center stage. I also like a good whodoneit story line. This one also had me second guessing myself. Way to go Christina!!
This was really good. It had a great mystery and a great romance. Even though Martie was stupid and hurt Chris. Chris didn't forgive Martie by the next chapter or the chapter after that, thank goodness because what she did was just wrong. This was well written and was sad in some place and I almost cried. I really hope this will be a series. I would love for the other firefighters have a book too.
I need to think before posting full review. I may be too harsh if I do it now after realizing what a waste that was.
Okay here goes. On a positive note, there were a few little paragraphs of snarkly, clever dialogue. However, those were only a small part of this book.
I had issues with 1) the insta-love (the lust/comfort I understood), 2) overuse of the same curse words, 3) everyone around the main couple "seeing" they were in love within minutes, 4) use of other languages (Italian/Lakota) with no explanation of what was said, & 5) Serious eye-rolling here.
It you enjoy stories with extremely detailed descriptions of the town, background characters, the weather, etc., violence against women and children, stereotype of the only church-going person being a hypocrite, bad guys who are not just evil, but also rapists, murderers, cheaters, kinky, and racist with political aspirations... this book is for you.
This was such a sweet read. I loved the honesty and self-awareness Chris displayed throughout the story, and I loved Martie's tough, no-nonsense attitude. The instant connection between Chris and Martie wasn't too heavy-handed and I liked that it felt believable. Most especially, I loved the way these two couldn't resist each other right from the start, and yet the author didn't allow it to feel forced or cheap.
The easy interactions between Chris and the rest of his crew were endearing, too, and the tense-but-mostly-friendly banter between Chris and Tony made me laugh. And wow, I loved Ronnie. I hope she shows up again somewhere in the series! She's had it hard, and she deserves a happy ending of her own.
There were also a few little plot twists throughout the story that had me sitting back and saying, "Huh, didn't see that coming!" All in all, it's a charming story with emotionally believable characters, very good use of foreshadowing, and great pacing throughout.
There are a few editing errors sprinkled here and there, and the language was a little gratuitous in some places but oh, Martie and Chris - these two are definitely worth getting to know!
I picked this book up during the free promotion and thought it was a well written, exciting romantic suspense. Chris Paytah is a brave and sexy firefighter who loses his friend and captain in fire. When he meets Martie Liotta, the arson investigator, he is instantly attracted to the woman assigned investigate the fire that killed his friend. The book provided a great balance between developing the love story of Chris and Martie and the mystery of who started the fire. There was also a great deal of development of the secondary characters which I thought was great.
If you love a good mystery and romance with a hot firefighter, this is definitely the book for you. I can’t wait to read the stories about the other firefighters.
What a pleasant surprise! I couldn't put this book down. Yes, you know how it's going to end. But the switch half-way through was a nice twist to a story that could have ended predictably. And the fact that the hero here was a Native American (far too infrequently presented in such a positive light, IMO) involved with an Italian woman (my nationality) who spoke Italian, was a firefighter AND an arson investigator (good, strong, positive female portrayals) ~ well ~ I was just thrilled! Great job, Ms. Moore!
It was good. The characters were likeable, the storyline was good...it had all of the elements of my favorite kinds of reads. But something was missing. That richness that makes you really connect to the characters, and really get into the story, was missing.
Overall, not a bad read. Good enough for me to pick up the next book in the series. I'm hoping that this series gets better with each book.
While the two of them work to discover the cause of the fire, they’re also navigating the precarious terrain of their new relationship. But someone with a more than passing interest in the beautiful Martie causes her to doubt her judgment, leading her to make a terrible decision that drives Chris away in anger. exciting beginning, sweet ending. loved the whole damn thing. i WAS briefly fooled by who the culprit was, but it was a twist worthy of a good episode of a crime drama TV show. hope the next book in this series comes out soon.
