"Barry Sanders" by Nathan Aaseng is about Barry Sanders life and football career. In his early life he was very poor and the only thing he had was football. The problem was that he was very small to play football and he was told this through his whole life. In high school he barely was able to get a scholarship to a college. In college he put up amazing numbers and obtained many records and he did even better in the NFL.
I thought that this was a very good non-fiction book. It kept you interested by playing through some of the most exciting games Barry played in. I also liked it because it wasn't too factual it was story like.
I recommend this book to any football fans. It is a great non-fiction book about one of the best players of all time that every football fan should read about.
Imagine being 5 feet 8 inches tall, running through a maze of giants that are trying to take you down. For Detroit Lions Barry Sanders, this was not only real life, it was an enjoyable profession. Being of such small stature, the chances of making it big in the NFL were slim. But after years of hard work, Sanders finally did just that. Detroit is where Barry Sanders would spend his entire career in the National Football League, shattering records and earning a spot in both college and the NFL Hall of Fame. In Nathan Aaseng’s book Barry Sanders, Star Running Back, the life and career of this amazing, persistent athlete is told. Barry Sanders was born on July 16, 1986 to his parents William and Shirley. He was their seventh child and not the last. He grew up with his eight sisters and three brothers in Wichita, Kansas. When he started out, he spent most of his time on the sideline. Later in his high school football career, he began using quickness and agility to play along with everyone else. He played through his entire high school years and was an asset to his team, but only after his brother graduated. Byron Sanders, Barry’s older brother by a year, was also a successful football athlete in high school, and he was starter for the team. Barry was his back up. As a senior, he began the year as a receiver. Late in the season, he was put at the running back position. He finished the season with the second highest rushing yards in the city of Wichita. He also led his team in kickoff returns and named to Honorable Mention in all of Kansas. After his senior year, he received a scholarship from Oklahoma State University. He spent most of his freshman year in a place he was familiar with, the bench. He had rushed for 86 yards and a touchdown in only twenty-two carries. The following year, his coach put him in at punt and kickoff return. He led the nation in kickoff returns that year as a sophomore. In 1988, Sanders’ junior year at OSU, his coach told him he would share the running back position with Mitch Nash. He finished the season with a staggering 2,553 rushing yards. Barry would go on to win the Heisman Trophy that year. He also set 34 new records for the NCAA, the most impressive being only one fumble in his 344 carries. After his junior year, Sanders was the Detroit Lions first round pick. He decided not to finish his final year of college and head off to play professional football. Sanders’ first year as a Lion was a successful one. He set a record of 1,303 yards as a rookie. He finished his career with 6,789 rushing yards, 1,499 receiving yards and 60 touchdowns. In conclusion, this was an interesting non-fiction book. The author did a great job explaining Barry Sanders’ life and his career. The book is mostly about statistics on Barry, but it does have other aspects of his life, such as him and his brother getting into trouble or how his height affected the amount of playing time he got. Overall, I enjoyed this book and would recommend this book to anybody who enjoys sports or statistics.
