A really excellent book. The best introduction into Sufism that there is. Reading this, one gets a sense of how sad and limited modern western psychology is, treating people as machines and objectifying their identity. Sufism is not just the mystical dimension of Islam, but it is the psychology of Islam: a science whose scope treats various aspects of the human psyche that the west has either unacknowledged or denied. All the great spiritual traditions such as Tibetan Buddhism and Kabbalah have a sacred science whose depth fathoms beyond the surface of,"evidence" and "objectivity" and whose labatory is the scientist itself. Suffism is just that sacred science.
Robert Frager is a psychologist and the leader of the Institute of Transpersonal Psychology. He is also a Sufi sheikh. Heart, Self, and Soul looks at the multi-dimensional aspects of Sufi Psychology, which is a more holistic, inclusive, human and humane form of psychology than the Western medicine model. This books goes into rich depth of theory, but also manages to be a spiritual autobiography and how-to manual. Very well done--as inspiring as all of the rare, real labors of love.
Overall this book was a decent read but I also found it a little hard to read. The book is a primer on the religion of Sufism and as such the first 5 or six chapters read like a text book. At first I felt like the author lacked conviction concerning the subject latter but as I got into the final chapters I realized the textbook feel of the beginning was necessary to understand the latter part of the book. It was a good nuts and bolts description of the main tenets of Sufism, and in the end I learned a lot about their concept of God and how we interact with him. I saw similar basic elements I find in Buddhism, Judaism, and Christianity, and surprisingly found that some of the stories passed down through that religion mirror some of those found in Buddhism, similar to what you find when you compare Buddhist and Christian anecdotes. I would recommend the book to someone who has a burning desire to understand Sufism, but not so much to the casual reader, who I think would get bored around chapter three or so.
I have learned psychology in university but I'm still confusing with myself. Psychology can not answer my question about who I am I. This book is absolutely stunning. All about my question in my soul all the time is answered clearly. If you read this book, you can know your God, your real self.
provides a very easy to understand, western understanding of what it means to undertake the Sufi path without coming across as secularised, amazing work.
As Ken Wilber quote: "Wise and profound! Robert Frager is uniquely qualified to bring the ancient wisdom of Sufism to te modern study of psychology. He unites both in a compelling fashion and succeeds admirably in presenting a Sufi psychology for today's world"
