All fifteen-year-olds must attend the Acquisition, the event that determines whether a person is good enough to live in the Harvest as one of the elite Endorsed. If not, they are condemned to live in the Barren as a servant of the Assembly. All servants of the Assembly are sterilized on their eighteenth birthday to prevent their compromising genes from being reproduced. Upon her day of reckoning, Emma knows there is a chance of becoming Sterile because of something tragic in her past. She also believes the past is the past. When the decision is made, lives change forever.
The life Emma tried so desperately to leave behind still haunts her, a life that is soon to be ripped apart by hate, jealousy, lies, and murder. If something doesn't change, it won't only be Emma's life hanging in the balance.
This was an okay read with an intriguing premise. It started out quite promising and, then somewhere near the middle, it became a little meh for me. I found some of the dialogue and interactions between Finn and Emma juvenile and cringe-worthy. I couldn't really feel a solid connection between them and thought their "romance" was weak and unbelievable.
And, for a supposedly very strict, regimented society in which the Steriles were severely restricted in what they could do and say, Emma seemed to be able to get away with an awful lot of rebellious behaviour that would have no doubt condemned another Sterile to arrest and prison. I'm afraid I failed to see what made her so special and an exception to the rules.
Nevertheless, there were some pluses to the book and most of the characters were quite well developed and likeable. Carter and Beckett were good friends to Emma and it was nice to see Emma reciprocate by trying to protect them and staying loyal to them. The negative, toxic influence of Finn's uncle and mother as he was growing up no doubt played a big role in his somewhat jaded personality, and I found myself disliking him more than liking him throughout the whole book. But, he did redeem himself somewhat near the end and subsequent books will probably change my opinion of him.
For the most part, I liked the book, but it didn't blow me away. However, I'm intrigued enough to see what happens next as a result of Emma's decision at the end.
A solid first YA novel (my assumption is that it is a first). There are a couple of holes in the plot, but nothing that causes the book to fall apart. Mostly things that I blame on the editor more than the author.
The premise is intriguing, and the author does an excellent job if giving away just enough to keep you wondering what's going to happen. However, I felt that some of the character development happened a little too quickly. If the story had simply been laid out to occur over a longer time period (most of it happens in 2 two week chunks about a year(?) apart) then I think I could have been better able to swallow certain emotional developments. As it is, the main character is presented as battle-beaten, hard-headed, hard hearted, emotionally distant and quick-to-become-attached all at the same time.
It was a nice quick read and I'll probably read the second one, if I get the chance.
This was an enjoyable dystopian. I guess that is an oxymoron. I read it quickly and I look forward to the rest of the series. It ends sorta in a cliff hanger, but a manageable one.
How do you live in a society where a stumble across a stage results in being deemed less than human? How do you live in a society where a cancer-survivor is worthless? How do you live in a society where these worthless non-entities do all of the menial tasks? How do you live and love?
I bought this book quite awhile ago and fell in love with the storyline and characters. I feel this book could actually be true in some society's, it has the rich and privileged ruling everything and everyone. I think this is a well written story that I couldn't put down. I strongly suggest if you like dystopian style storylines this is a good one. Hoping for a second novel in the series
An amazon freebie that Naomi picked up. Super fast read, and entertaining. It was fairly predictable. Author's strongest qualities were the characters themselves. DEFINITELY a book meant for young teens, and I wouldn't have a problem with my girls reading it some day.
Such a great book! I cannot wait until I find out more about Emma and her family. I read this in two days. kept me turning pages until wee hours of the morning. The plot structure is well thought out. AWESOME read. Spread the word, I believe she is new and I want her to write more! =]
Really good read. Ya know that excitement you feel when you have a REALLY GOOD BOOK waiting for you? This is THAT BOOK! I am just confused as to where the next installment is?? Help!!!
