Oxford Introductions to Language Study

Rate this book

I started reading this book as a revision for the first chapter but ended up finishing it in 3 hours, Verdonk explains style in language in an interesting way, the choice of poems in the book is great as well. I'd recommend it for translators to be or anyone who wants to have a brief idea about the language of literature.

Short booklet full of ideas. It is really good. I wouldn't say I enjoyed reading it which I did sometimes, but I would openly say that it really opened my mind to new ways of looking at literary texts. It opened my mind to new angles of language I didn't have before. The booklet blends my two favorite fields of English which are Literature and Linguistics into a tasty smoothie.

It has some issues like the confusing use of terms. It confused me a bit when it comes to literary terminology, but the good thing is that it has glossary at the end of it.
