The world's most beloved strong-girl fights fires, saves babies, and causes mischief at a tea party
Pippi Longstocking returns to fix everything in the second volume of comics written by the series creator, Astrid Lindgren, and illustrated by the original Pippi artist, Ingrid Vang Nyman. It is Pippi's birthday, which means there is a lot of fun to be had! Join Pippi, Annika, and Tommy in their adventures on board a ship, hosting farewell parties, and visiting with Pippi's father, the island king. Bright colors, zany illustrations, and, of course, an irrepressibly joyful, strong-willed Lindgren and Vang Nyman's brilliant work guarantees that Pippi Fixes Everything will become an instant classic for young and old alike.

The second volume of D+Q's reprint series of Pippi Longstocking comics. I read the first one ages ago, but I recall enjoying it just as much as this one.
Pipi Longstocking was created by Astrid Lindgren in a series of childrens books. Here she continues working with Ingrid Vang Nyman back to bring her iconic creation to the comicbook page. For me, Nyman is just as important as Lindgren to the lasting appeal of Pippi (but I'm not a Pippi scholar by any means).
It's reminiscent of John Stanley (in that it's hilarious to this day) but has more of an outsider feel to the artwork. A very flat paper-cutout look to it.
I usually complain about garish colors, but it kind of works here actually. I'd still like to see a treatment similar to what D+Q did with their Stanley reprints (the earlier ones designed by Seth) but this is a lot of fun to look at.
Honestly, my only knowledge of Pippi comes from the 90s (?) TV show that I caught a few times as a child. I got the jist of the character, here there's a sorta sad element of her being an unwanted orphan that I think was missing in the show. She's more like a super-hero in the show, here it's more her imagination. She's a child that had to grow up too quick to fend for herself. The comparisons to Peter Pan are apt.
Well worth reading for comic book fans! The mid 20th century Swedish comic scene that D+Q is unearthing for me is just lovely.
i really like pippi and the burglars. because the burglars are trying to steal the monkey but then she catches them and then she throws them over her head. she is the strongest person in the world.
The outrageous Pippi maybe doesn't wear very well-- she wasn't as funny to me as she was when I was young. But the illustrations in this edition pep the whole thing up, and what reader of our generation can resist seeing Pippi tackle the robbers, go to a party, or at long last get to see her Papa again?
Pull quote/note "'GRANDMA HAD REALLY STRONG TEETH. IF YOU STUCK A NAIL IN HER MOUTH... SHE WOULD BITE IT OFF.'
'I BET YOUR GRANDMA NEVER ATE CANDY.' 'NO, SHE ATE ONLY NAILS. AND SHE HAD TEETH LIKE A LION.' Reading these comics of Pippi Longstocking now, I can see that I got my start with absurdist humor young
With her orange splayed braids and super human strength, Pippi Longstocking is a character that always intrigued me. That is, until as a kid I tried watching her movies, which were too stilted and folksy for my liking, and which turned me off to reading her books. But that all changed when I came across Pippi Fixes Everything, Drawn and Quarterly’s second volume of Pippi comics that were originally published in a Swedish magazine in the 1950s.
From its eye-catching cover to its humorous, quirky and charming stories, I realize the problem was all in the translation. Written by Pippi’s creator Astrid Lindgren, Pippi Fixes Everything shows Pippi as a mischievous yet good-natured young girl who throws bullies in the air, beats up burglars who sneak into her house, carries her horse over her head, and saves her best friends Annika and Tommy from a burning building. The book, simple yet wonderfully whimsical, is intended for children but just as fun for adults. It is beautifully illustrated by Pippi’s original artist Ingrid Vang Nyman, and is the farthest thing from stilted and folksy. I can’t wait to get my hands on D&Q’s first volume, Pippi Moves In, and any future Pippi books they put out. – Carla Sinclair

I love Pippi Longstocking so I was eager to read this graphic novel version of some of Pippi's adventures. I finished it disappointed though. The pacing is awkward and I'm not sure if that's an issue tied to translation or more a sign that Pippi's story doesn't work as well in this format.
Each episode is funny enough and despite the awkward pacing Pippi's character still shines brightly. Every tale seems to end on a jokey note like plenty of run-of-the-mill sitcoms do on television.
The artwork is vivid and reminds me of the Sunday comics. I didn't necessarily like it, though I didn't dislike it either.
I think I'll continue to recommend the Pippi novels to young readers as opposed to these graphic novels. Pippi's world is a fabulous one in which to live in one's imagination and these graphic novels just don't provide enough detail or atmosphere that readers will have the same enchanting experience that the novels offer.
2nd installment of these delightful Pippi comics from the 50s! Very 50s but perfectly capture the nuance of Lindgren's stories and the always delightfully subversive Pippi!
