L'Incal

Der Incal, Bd. 6: In Nächster Nähe

Rate this book

Final instalment, which I ended up enjoying more than the previous ones. The wild ride carries on and reaches a kind of resolution, which was a nice surprise.

I don’t know what I expected from this series, but the nonsensical aspect of it made it very hard for me to connect. On one hand, we have the ‘absurd’ of the feel and tone, and then on the other we have allusions to Tarot cards, fate, philosophies, and what not! The gap between these two is shocking, even if I’m pretty sure it was consciously done.

Moebius’s art however is a different thing, and one that I could appreciate from the start. Again, it surprises. Not so much in its style since I’ve seen echoes of it in many comics and films, but rather in the inconsistencies of representations, especially of John DiFool. I didn’t exactly like the many stereotypical elements but these were counterbalanced by other great graphics, from universes and ‘constructions’ (ships, buildings, etc.), to the vision mixing.

In the end, I find myself a little at a loss between the format and the content. I didn’t enjoy this and yet I can see its worth. I’ve got a feeling I’m going to need to re-read the whole series, and maybe, this time knowing what I am in for, it will work better...

I am pretty ambivalent about the whole experience and glad to be done with it. I think I do not like John DiFool much. I pretty much agree with those 78 million.... What a wanker.

The twist at the end was neat and there were some nice panels towards the end.

But mostly I felt very meh and couldn‘t wait to get to the end. The resolution of the storyline was underwhelming. This felt a bit like smoking too much weed and listening to Ravi Shankar‘s Best Of.

Definitely not picking up more of this. Yes, it‘s a classic. And if you are a completionist, have a look at it for the sake of rounding off your experience of European graphic novels. Other than that maybe read the first volume and don‘t bother with the rest.

The final volume of The Incal becomes philosophical again, and then surprisingly takes a hard swerve to religion. Somehow, it all fits, really tying together everything that came before and offering an ending that at the same time is conclusive and haunting.

I look forward to reading the other stories in this universe.

This last episode, supposedly the second part of a two-parter, is something of a two-parter itself.

The first half is a hilarious vision of nightmare, an entire world in the image of the ultimate loser, John Difool. Moebius excels in the depiction of urban decay and random crowds.

The second part is a rather dull mystical light show reminiscent of the end of 2001, the movie.

The whole saga ends with a bizarre mix of religious ecstasy and condemnation of religion. On planet Difool, the entire population hates its creator, and devotion to divinity only brings a fiery death for all the companions except Difool himself who is condemned to eternal repetition of the whole saga. This doesn’t quite sell the notion of a renewed creator ... all that crackpot mysticism has gone to pot.

There are spin-offs to this series available on Kindle. I might have to check them out.

I don't really get the ending. Or rather: I think this is not the ending these books deserve. Though don't get me wrong: all the 6 Volumes of the Incal are still an absolute classic and worth reading and the ending will stick with you for a long, long time making you come back and re-read it years after (and buy all the books in the shiny new edition), as it happened to me.

The serie as a whole is a must-read but the ending is just a little too much out there for me.
Still if you consider yourself a fan of European comics you have to read The Incal so I have to recommend this.

Maravilhoso para lá de palavras. Completo e profundo e intemporal.

Very enjoyable grand finale of a mad journey!

This last volume of Incal is one the best ones for sure. At last, the story makes some sort of sense and I caught myself muttering ‘oh, so this is what all of this was about’. The conclusion of the tale is a relatively skillful play on the cliches: personal encounter with a Jungian union of opposites embodied in a bearded astral creator, and the triumph of the unassuming protagonist at the very last moment. The ending itself has also a nice little twist that I did not see coming.

Though it was fun reading through the 6 parts of the Incal, I think I will wait a good while before considering any of the many spin offs of this story. At this stage, I can see some of the symbolic meaning of the different ideas and characters. Still, the impression I had from the very start remains: imaginatively funny elements here live within a scope of a fairly standard narrative.

Overall, I get why some people think this is a classic science fiction comic. If you have started, continue. If you are unsure whether to begin reading Incal, I would suggest to start with stronger titles such as The 6 Voyages of Lone Sloane or the World of Edena, and leave this one for the dessert.

Moebius classic

The Kindle version of this fantastic graphic novel is amazing. The guided and zoomable cells really are well done. My favorite view is turning vertical scroll on. This story is so multi layered. Jodorowsky is an amazing talent.
