It is the year 1826 . . . - Gentle, impoverished bachelor Thomas Potts is forced to fill the unpopular post of Constable of the Parish of Tardebrigge. Timid by nature and hectored by his shrewish mother, things do not initially go well for Tom. This was a really good story told against a fascinating backdrop, of what I hope was a fictional account of English village life in the early 1800's. The poor (figuratively and literally) main character is appointed village constable without applying for or wanting the job! Of course, as "police stories" go, there is murder . . . The mystery plot line is well done and the setting made me grateful for modern life.
