Nothing can stand in the way of outspoken, rule-breaker-extraordinaire, Kaddy Richston…except destiny. Born with wildly colored hair and piercing gray eyes Kaddy knew she was different, but she set her sights on her ambitious dreams of being in a rock band and leaving her small town behind along with the painful memories of her past.
But destiny has other plans for her.
When the calm, cool, and always collected Cole Huntington enters her life he takes a strange interest in her, his striking blue eyes never wandering far from her every move. Despite her efforts to push him away, he plans on unraveling every single one of Kaddy’s dark secrets even though he has some of his own.
Despising each other from the start, Kaddy is determined to undermine whatever intentions he has until she learns of a destiny she never asked for. The fate of the world lies in her hands as she learns how different she really is. The only person she can turn to for answers is the last person she’d want help from: Cole Huntington who seems to dislike her rule-breaking as much as she dislikes his rule-following.
This is a story about destiny. And Kaddy Richston, our heroine, quickly stole my heart with her outspoken demeanor and kick-butt drumming skills. She’s a great female lead: strong, intriguing, and special in a way she doesn’t even realize; if you enjoy Nephilum and/or demigod stories, then you definitely want to pick up this novel.
The changes that Kaddy undergoes throughout this novel are extremely interesting, and I love how Cole and Mike are there for her throughout it all—they are both great supporting characters, and it’s hard not to love them both, or Gidson for that matter. Ulrich has definitely given her readers some swoon worthy young men to mull over as the story unfolds. But swooning aside, Kaddy is my favorite of them all. She has been through a lot in her life, so I understand that she kind of rolls with the punches and doesn’t ask a ton of questions, especially when Cole reveals the truth about her heritage, but I was dying over here, because I don’t roll with the punches and I need all the answers right now. Of course, that isn’t how a series works, and I know it, so I’m going to have to wait, but thankfully Ulrich doesn’t leave readers in much of a lurch—while there is definitely going to be a book two, there isn’t a huge cliffhanger, per se.
Overall, this was a fun read that I highly recommend to anyone looking for something a bit different.
When I first started this book, I saw Mike and Kaddy together. I knew that Cole was going to be coming up later in the story, so I was stelling myself for one of those super-cringy love triangles between the childhood best friend and the mysterious new guy in town. Eventually, I figured out that there would be no love triangle, and this made me happy. Nevertheless, this is not the only book in this series, so I am not sure of what will happen in future installments. Just know that for now, there are no love triangles! Kaddy is an inspirational main character. She was abused throughout her childhood by her father after her mother and brother abandon them. She hasn't seen her mother and brother since they left, and sometimes she blames her mother for leaving, which caused her father to break down and become abusive. Nevertheless, even though she has horrible night terrors about the abuse that she endured, she won't let her past stop her from pursuing her dream of music.
Cole has a unique story of his own that is discovered within the book. I won't speak about it too much, especially since not everything is really known about him by the end of the story. I will just let you know that it is definitely worth the read.
Kaddy's friends in the band each have their own unique personalities, and each of them has their own issues. For example, this book even discusses the drug culture that lies within rock bands and their music, and the effects of drugs on the people using them and the families around them. This is only one of the small things that are included in the story that make it more realistic.
The worldbuilding and character development go hand in hand in this story, as Kaddy learns more and more about herself and the truth of the world around her. Again, I can't say too much about it without spoiling the entire story. As I was reading it, I felt just as confused as Kaddy was. By the time everyone started to understand what was really going on, the story ended as the wait began for the next installment of the series. I was upset when I saw that I would have to wait to find out more about Kaddy's story, and I can't wait to see where the next book takes her.
I would recommend this book to lovers of fantasy-romance or paranormal romance that is YA but does not contain a love triangle, and that has realistic characters with good character development.
I received an advance copy of this book and this is my voluntary review.
This is yet another rendition of the paranormal world where supernatural beings walk amongst humans undetected. Some are good and others are downright evil.
Kaddy lives in a small town which she intends to leave behind to fulfill her dream and getting away from her childhood's atrocious memories. Being the drummer of a band gives her the chance to do just that.
Cole is a stranger to this new town and since his chance encounter with Kaddy, he is driven to get to the bottom of who she really is. Their mutual dislike won't stop him as he is rather persistent.
Kaddy is looking forward to reaching her goal. Mike is her best friend and anchor as well as a band member. They work hard alongside the other two band members, Josh and Owen to start venturing into the wild world.
Kaddy has always been different with her wild red hair and piercing grey eyes, and has been known as being a freak. She doesn't realise how different she is until she starts having difficult to explain episodes. Somehow, Cole always happens to be there to save the day. Then, she is faced with the most unexpected reality when she is told the truth about the "Chosen". She struggles to come to terms with this new development and finds that she has no other choice than to rely on Cole for help. Their interactions are far from being pleasant to begin with, but they soon grow on one another. They learn a lot from each other and quite often unconsciously gravitate towards the other. The more time they spend together, the more complicated the situation becomes. Kaddy won't deviate from her goal and Cole sticks to the rules. Will they eventually come to a compromise?
I like the premise of the story and find the half souls and shadows to be fascinating. The friendship between Kaddy and Mike is impressive. Cole's cool and calm demeanour together with his honourable actions make him the ideal protagonist. Kaddy is another story. As much as I like a kick ass heroine, I find her to be contrary and infuriating, even though she does have her good moments. Self preservation is a good thing, but she takes it a tad too far. All in all, a good concept, but the heroine's attitude dulls the effect.
A YA paranormal that takes an old concept and adds a new twist to it.
First, I did get bored at some points. Nothing really happened until after the 50% mark, and that was a long first half of the book. The main character, Kaddy, just had a lot of band practices and weird fevers. With a paranormal, you expect more action and more pieces of the puzzle for the hero or heroine to figure out by the 50% mark. We don’t really get that. I was intrigued, but not as much as I normally would be with a paranormal.
Kaddy was not your typical girl. Her past was really dark and cruel. She never seemed to get a break with anything. I am interested to see if her family comes into play in the next book(s). I have a lot of questions about her parents and brother.
I loved Mike, Kaddy’s best friend, and the rest of the guys in her band. They were a dynamic group, and they all had this up and down relationship. I kept thinking that Mike would become the love interest, but that never happened. I also thought Mike would be a lot more involved, too, as the story progressed. Sadly, he was left in the dark.
With Cole, the new guy in town, I don’t feel like I know enough about him and his character to say much. He was there, but his character fell flat with me. I don’t know if I was just waiting for something amazing with him or I was feeding off Kaddy’s initial assessment of him. He just didn’t seem 3-dimensional.
Overall, the writing is amazing, if a little long-winded. The story itself is original-ish. And the characters are fluid.
With a strong, passionate protagonist, CHOSEN opens an intriguing new paranormal series. Kaddy, whose life has never been easy, finally feels things falling into place..and then she meets Cole. A guy who seems to hate her on sight, and yet every time she's in trouble, she finds Cole there to save the day. When he hints that she has a destiny to fulfill, Kaddy let's him know in no uncertain terms that she will be defining her own destiny.
This new series stars a strong, but broken protagonist with an awesome best friend that keeps her grounded even as the world seems to change right before her eyes. With passion, humor, and danger, author Paulina Ulrich has a solid tale in Chosen and ends things on just the right note to draw readers to book two!
Kaddy is a drummer in a band. Her best friend Mike plays guitar and two other members make them real. She has flaming red hair and strange eyes. They call her a freak of nature. Her mother took off with her little brother when she was eight, and her father is a real piece of work. She has the date set on when the band will leave to go on tour. Along comes Cole.
Kaddy starts to change. Unbelievable pain grips her and at one point, she ends up in the hospital. Cole seems to be everywhere. Soon....She finds out why. Life suddenly takes an interesting turn. Not all in a good way.
It's an interesting story. A little bit slow at first, but gathers momentum.
This is, for the most part, a well executed book. My one quibble is that the frustrating push and pull between Kaddy and Cole seemed to me to be a little drawn out.
However, once that was out of the way, the book quickly hit its stride and delivered with a decent plot, character interaction and drama.
I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book.
4*s review posted here... http://bookpassionforlife.blogspot.co... Chosen is a good read featuring Kaddy Richston, a girl considered a freak because of her striking red hair and silver eyes, so much of a freak that everyone she has ever loved has rejected & left her, except her band – Mike, Josh & Owen – and together they are just doing time until their funds are high enough to get their butts outta the small town that has stifled them since birth. That is until Cole Huntington enters the music store she works in and it’s hate at first sight; fair enough she feels connected to him, he has an intense blue eye thing going on for him and she can sense his presence… but they won’t be around much longer so she isn’t interested in forming attachments, they never work out for her anyway. When something strange starts to happen to Kaddy – Cole is there to make it better – When a strange man with red glowing eyes attacks her – someone with blue glowing eyes saves her – When the pains overtake her body – Cole soothes them – but when he tells her about her destiny – She isn’t having it! Nothing & no one will map out Kaddy’s life, she will not be beholden to a destiny that puts the weight of the world on her shoulders! She’s moving on, putting this chapter of her life behind her and Cole Huntington will not stand in her way. As I mentioned, Chosen is a good read and I enjoyed it. Kaddys character is both vivacious and sad; vivacious because she owns who she is, how people see her, what she’s been through and when she’s on stage – she’s in her element – but sad because of most of the same reasons; she hates how people see her, as a freak, she hates how everyone has left her, rejected her, blamed her for things out of her control – every time she gives her heart, it gets trampled on so it’s understandable that when she feels a connection to Cole she pushes him away. It was sad to see her do this to herself, she has safe relationships with her band, Mike especially who vowed he would always be there for her and Mike’s mother (who took her in when she was 14) but she lets no one else in and it’s intentional. Now, Kaddy has some changes to go through in this book and those changes will bring about a big reveal which is the main story of the book and will open up the plot for the whole series. I can’t really speak of it so, what I will tell you is that Kaddy is special, she is destined for bigger things, as the title suggests she is ‘chosen’, she is at the centre of a prophecy but not a rigid prophecy and as the series title suggests – she will ‘fight fate’. She shares something in common with more than one character and a certain someone will be the key to opening up Kaddys world. She will blossom throughout this, become even stronger in body & soul and finally let someone in…. but this is just the beginning because let’s not forget, the band are going on tour! This was very much a getting to know you book as we get to know Kaddy, Cole & the band, it is also filled with information about things that Kaddy never dreamed existed and we are right there with her and will be right there for book 2 as well.
Sometimes you read a book and you love the story. It’s something that could be absolutely amazing. The story, the characters; it all has this potential to blow your socks off, but due to the execution your socks stayed on. That was Chosen for me. I LOVE Kaddy, I LOVE Cole, I LOVE Mike and the guys, I LOVE what takes place. There were just details here and there that I felt were missing. Or questions that I thought should have been asked that weren’t.
Kaddy Richston is a sarcastic, follow no-rules kind of girl, with a bad past. She plays the drums in a band; I’m pretty much in love with her because of that. Women playing drums has always been bad-ass in my mind. She is also a bit different with her fiery red hair and silver eyes. Mike is her best friend, her “anchor to reality”; he’s in the band along with Josh and Owen. They are all great characters and I enjoyed the interactions between them, except when Owen was being an asshole. They cared about Kaddy so much and it showed. I was beginning to think Mike really cared for her, a bit more than just a friend…still may.
Then enter Cole Huntington, the new guy in town that wears too much cologne. Ok, maybe he doesn’t but I loved how Kaddy referred to him as Scent Boy. He’s interesting. But he has secrets. Kaddy and Cole had an instant dislike for one another, but they were drawn to each other as well. There was a lot of back and forth between the characters. It intrigued me.
“You don’t belong in my world, and I don’t belong in yours. Simple as that.” – Cole.
Yep, super curious now! Kaddy starts to have pain and fevers and it seems Cole has a way of making it all better. Then Kaddy changes. She’s something that she never could have imagined. It’s during all these changes and revelations that I wanted more. I wanted Kaddy to be more shocked, ask more questions, and just be more curious. She took it all in stride way to easily for me. I do love that Cole was there to help her through it all! I’m pretty sure I have a crush on nerdy Cole.
“Maybe I don’t see it because she isn’t the one I want to know.” – Cole. SWOON.
Paulina Ulrich has written a very exciting paranormal read. I loved the paranormal side of the story and I’m very interested to learn more as the series progresses. The characters were enjoyable and I’m anxious to see where the road takes them. It was the lack of enough detail and information that didn’t make it a higher rating for me. Chosen is still a book I highly recommend to paranormal fans and I know I’ll be reading the next book! I have to know if Kaddy and Cole’s paths ever cross again!
Chosen is the first book I have read by Paulina Ulrich. Starting out I had few expectations and new little about the book other than the lead was in a band and the blurb hinted at a paranormal aspect. I was pleasantly surprised at how quickly I was sucked into the story she weaved and finished this story in less than 24hrs. Paulina’s writing style is smooth and the story flowed very easily.
Kaddy (pernounced like Caddy) has a had a rough life. She lives with her best friend Mike and his mother, works in a Music store, and plays the drums in a band called Post Modern Love. (What a great name for a band!) Kaddy and her band mates are all working towards getting out of their small town and hitting the road with the band. With her bright red fiery hair and grey eyes she feels like an outcast in their small town and is very ready to hit the road and escape her past.
Cue in Cole. Boy was I happy when Mr. Tall, Dark and VERY Handsome Cole Huntington entered the story! Cole keeps appearing in and around Kaddy’s life. Despite her attraction to him, Kaddy is determined to push him away. When strange things start happening to her Cole seems to be always around. After some time she realizes the mysterious Cole is the only one that can answer her questions and their relationship goes from frienemies to friends and then to something a little more. With his help Kaddy realizes her fate and is faced with some hard decisions. As far as the paranormal element of this story I feel like I shouldn’t say much. I liked being surprised while I was reading this story and not knowing anything about that aspect added to the mystery that is weaved throughout the story.
The supporting characters in this story were o’ so very entertaining. I loved the dynamic between them all. The banter was quite humorous and I especially loved the friendship between Kaddy and Mike her bestfriend. That boy would do anything for her and she knows it! This story ends on a bit of a cliff hanger. Nothing too crazy like rip your hair out throw your reading device. There is still so much more to be told of Kaddy’s story and I can not wait to see what happens in the next installment!
I would categorize this story as Young Adult Paranormal borderline New Adult. If you are fan of this genre I highly recommend giving Chosen a try!
I received this book from the author for a review. I originally gave this book 4 stars but now that I've had time to rethink and sit back and look at the book I think it's more of a 3 star book. Don't get me wrong this was a fun book! For those who liked The Violet Eden books by Jessica Shirvington will like this book too. Girls with a destiny, Angels, strong female characters, romance, action, and all that will like this book. So why only 3 stars? Well lets move on then shall we?
Kaddy is the main character with unnaturally RED, and I mean RED hair who is in a band, lives with her best friend, has a sad childhood story, and who plays the drums. Everything is finally looking right for Kaddy after what she's been through till she meets Cole who comes in a throws everything upside down for her. Because of Cole she finds that the weight of mankind is on her shoulders and that she is possibly this "Chosen" person to save the world!
Cole did not mean to come across Kaddy and when he does he is bothered and intrigued by her because she is not what she is supposed to be and he is very confused by her. Because of him he was able to be there for Kaddy in ways that no one else could and when Kaddy's world goes upside down it's Cole that can help her and tries.
I enjoyed the aspect of how Kaddy and Cole hate each other but eventually come to terms with each other and eventually there is a blossoming romance. I liked how he is tough but gentle and how both Kaddy and Cole and get under each other's skin.
What I did not like was the language. I felt it was a little more than it needed to be and I felt the whole band thing didn't really fit. I understand why it's there but it felt off somehow. Believe me I get it, I get why it's there and what it means to the characters but it just didn't seem to fit! I don't know how else to explain it!
Overall if you are looking for a fantasy book that is quick and fun then this is it!
Language: heavy Sexual Content: moderate (PG-13 just some innuendos and steamy scenes) Drugs/Alcohol: mild Violence: moderate (PG some talk of child abuse, and angels fighting demons)
I’ve been wanting to read a Paulina Ulrich book for a while now and I had one all ready but then I was asked if I wanted to review Chosen & of course I accepted ;).
This being my first Paulina Ulrich read I didn’t really have any expectations going in. As it was when I started reading I immediately fell in love with Kaddy & Mike (Oh Mike… Everybody needs a friend like you) and their little hometown.
I found myself really enjoying the storyline… Granted Nephilim/Angel storylines are starting to feel a little over done to me but Chosen took that storyline & made it its own. It didn’t feel like I had already read some of this before (like it does with so many Nephilim books these days).
I loved all the twists and turns.
Not to mention there’s a type of comfort/familiarity in the way that Paulina writes, which pulls you in to the story straight away.
And Gidson… How can I write a review & not mention Gidson? I ADORED him & I hope we get to see more of him in the next book.
The one thing I guess I thought could be improved in this book (when I first started reading) was the name of the two groups, the Commendables & the Calamitous… But like I said this was in the first few chapters… Once I read on & realised just how much more information the reader had to keep track of I was actually glad the author had used such easily identifiable names for the two groups.
I’ve gotta hand it to Paulina though… Just when I thought I knew how the book was gonna end she went & surprised me (and I love a good surprise)… Hats off to Paulina for taking that risk… I’d love to talk more about it but I don’t wanna ruin the surprise factor for those of you who want/are gonna read it).
I recommend this book (as you can probably tell ;]) because it does away with the stereotypical Angel storylines & gives us something different, but still with a little dash of familiarity there to keep those of us who want it, happy.
Kaddy is the type of character that with every page turned, she becomes more interesting. A troubled past, a strong will and a huge amount of determination comes across very quickly. The author pays attention to detail in spades. There's a comfortable progression in many of the relationships between characters that did not feel abrupt or lacking in any way. Mike is the type of character that any girl would love to have as a best friend and is certainly worth the Utopya Con 2014 Best Secondary Character (Best Beastie) in a series nomination. Cole in the beginning is a little dry but did win me over eventually. The romantic side of things adds a lot of tenderness and emotion. This story could appeal to a YA reader as a New Adult reader however a fair amount of foul language is present in the beginning. A few situations that were not fully explored, were a small surprise to me though perhaps it will be content for another book of the series. This however is not to deter greatly from enjoying the book. A fantastic read and for those who like stories about musicians and/or simply the paranormal genre, this is worth reading! My curiosity is peaked for the next book in the series.
4 stars
I received a copy in exchange for an honest review.
If you've never read one of Paulina Ulrich's novels, you are definitely missing out! I first fell in love with her Flightless Bird series (and I can't wait for the fourth book -- if you haven't read her first series, do yourself a favor!) I've found myself instantly sucked into her stories and loving her characters, to the point of losing sleep from reading into the wee hours. Long story short, I couldn't wait to read Chosen.
Once again, I was sucked in! I love Kaddy's strong personality, wanted to clone Mike into real life for a best friend of my own, and then of course there's Cole. I love her writing style and how easily she pulls you in with her characters; the characters and their relationships are so realistic and relatable that it offers the perfect balance to the paranormal side of things. You won't be disappointed!
The author has become my daughters friend in college. Naturally I just had to read her book, and was happily surprised how fun it was! I was warned about some strong language, but did not find it overly so. Very engaging, fast paced and it was really fun to try to guess what was behind the magnetism of the characters and why would Kaddy's parents abandon her as a child... Can't wait for the next book!
This is a good versus evil book, but it's up to Kaddy to choose sides. However, she's not going to let either side tell her what to do. This definitely adds to the intrigue of this book, and I'm very curious to see where this series goes.
Kaddy has had a hard life, her only positive things is her her best friend Mike and her love of Music. It seems like recently though she can't escape her abusive past and relives it through her night terrors. On top of that, it seems that her sense of smell has enhanced and she is always running hot, feverish. When a stranger shows up in the music store she works in, Kaddy is overwhelmed by his scent as well as by the attraction she feels to him. But there is something else in town looking for Kaddy...
Yay for an entirely different book about supernaturals and Angels! I am always on the prowl for a new plot line and new kinds of supernaturals and usually let down, but Paulina created a hidden world with wings and powers as well as unexpected conflicts that kept me on my toes and engaged. It also doesn't hurt that there was some romance thrown into the mix because I do love myself some romance- buuut, don't expect a happily ever after. This is just the start of Kaddy's new life so more will come and I hope it is happier.
My favorite part of the book was Kaddy's relationship with Mike (and Mike himself- he was like a large, cuddly enthusiastic puppy!). I was a little hesitant that there was going to be a romance developing, or at least romantic feelings most likely on Mike's part, but I am glad to be proven wrong. The two were the best of (completely platonic) friends and I loved them together. They supported, completely "got" each other, would risk anything to help- they were like super close siblings and I wouldn't have wanted it any other way. I also thought it was sweet that his mom basically adopted her to be family, cause let's face it, the girl needed some love.
Without being spoilery, the ending was heartbreaking and most certainly bittersweet. How can you let go of something you didn't know you needed while at the same time achieving what you always wanted? Yep, Kaddy is on the path to something so much bigger than herself here and book 2 will be something to look forward to, fate is not something you can ignore forever- either is love.
I am voluntarily reviewing a complimentary copy of this book
