Rate this book
The discerning scholar is adept at diagnosing the various spiritual illnesses resulting from sins, and treating the malaise in the heart. If he finds a person failing into despair, he tries to ignite the spark of hope in the heart. if, on the other hand, he see that one in a reckless and fearless state, he works to in still the fear of Allah in his heart. Thus, the scholar treats sickness by using its opposite as a cure. Ibn al-Jawzi, has collected herein ominous narration, warnings against wrongdoing, and stories of forbidding and punishment that shake the hearts from their slumber. The self-assured one becomes anxious; the heart-hearted becomes soft; the dried tear ducts start to flow; slothful becomes motivated.

i really liked reading this book. very eye-opening and taught me things i did not know about in a digestible manner.

“O son of Adam, if you knew how near is your death, you would have abandoned your long term hopes, and desired doing more good deeds, and became less attached and caring for this world. [When you die] you shall encounter regret, if you were not on the right path, as your family and servants will place you in your grave, and so your dearest child will leave you there alone, and your father and family in-laws will completely reject you, for then you are neither able to return to your life nor able to increase your good deeds. So, strive and work hard in preparation for the Day of Judgement before you drown in regret and sorrow.”

“O son of Adam, the people of this world are travelers and should not rest until they reach their destination for indeed the eternal stay is after death.”

“…there is nothing awaits youthfulness except the fruits of aging, and nothing awaits healthy bodies except sickness, and nothing awaits the living except the surprise of death, the nearness of the end, the insomnia of transmitting from one life to another, the sound of whining, the sweat of foreheads [due to agony of death], expansion of noses, knowledge of the distress, last breaths, pain of souls reaching the throat, and the heartbreak of assiduity [into the worldly pleasures].”

“Ibn Mas'üd used to say: "You are in the passage of day and night, your life decreases [by every passing moment] but your deeds are all preserved and death shall come to you all of a sudden. So, whoever planted good is soon to expect the harvest of happiness, and whoever planted evil is soon to expect the harvest of regret.”

“Why do you build what you will not inhabit? And collect what you will not eat? And hope for what you will not reach? Those who preceded you built, collected and hoped but their hope turned into nothing, and what they collected became in vain and their building became graves.”

“Every breath we take is taking us closer to death. This time we spend in this world is short, the time we are held in out graves is long, and the punishment for following our lowly desires is calamitous.”

Whenever you feel your iman (faith) decreasing, just read this. The book couldn’t be anymore truer to its title.

This book is a collection of hadith regards on the story of ‘al-barzakh’. A lot of hadith included here tells about the punishment, inside & outside of the grave, hellfire, heaven, angels, etc. You might find stories about the punishment of those who advocate; three things that follow the deceased; secrets of al-barzakh; conversation between the dead; portrayal of the punishment of the grave; the man whose Salah is not accepted for 40 days and so on. All these I’d say enough for us to know a bit about life after death. I mean the imagination we have about death is restricted, but with the explanation & story from hadith, we could learn something.

Say, “Indeed, the death from which you flee — indeed, it will meet you. Then you will be returned to the Knower of the unseen and the witnessed, and He will inform you about what you used to do. (Surah Al-Jumu’ah, 62: 8)

Abu Hurairah r.a. reported: The Messenger of Allah SAW said: “Remember often the destroyer of pleasures”, by which he meant death. (Sunan al-Tirmidhi, 2307)

Abu Hurairah narrated that the Messenger of Allah (SAW) came across some people who were sitting, so he said:
'Shall I not inform you of the best of you from your worst?' He said: "They became silent, so he said that three times, then a man said: 'Of course, O Messenger of Allah! Inform us of the best among us from our worst.' He said: 'The best of you is the one whose goodness is hoped for, and people are safe from his evil. And the worst of you is he whose goodness is not hoped for, and people are not safe from his evil.'" (Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2263)

A reality check we are all in need of.

"If we were left unquestioned after death,
Death would have been the comfort of every living.
But when we die we will be resurrected,
And then we wil be asked about everything.”

"Where is the beauty and the handsome? Where are those who were delighted by their youth and good looks?
Where are the kings who built cities and fenced it with walls?
Where are the victorious in wars? They all perished and ended in the depths of dark graves! Hasten and hurry up [to do good deeds] but death is faster."

"Why do you build what you will not inhabit?
And collect what you will not eat? And hope for what you will not reach? Those who preceded you built, collected and hoped but their hope turned into nothing, and what they collected became in vain and their building became graves."

"O son of Adam, if you knew how near is your death, you would have abandoned your long term hopes, and desired doing more good deeds, and became less attached and caring for this world. [When you die] you shall encounter regret, if you were not on the right path, as your family and servants will place you in your grave, and so your dearest child will leave you there alone, and your father and family in-laws will completely reject you, for then you are neither able to return to your life nor able to increase your good deeds. So, strive and work hard in preparation for the Day of Judgement before you drown in regret and sorrow."

"Do not save a bit of effort with which you can benefit yourself, do not compromise your good deeds for the sake of people, observe the limits of Allah when you are overpowered by your desires, and raise yourself to what He loves despite of the difficulties you may face, and do not seek the pleasure of anyone except Him.”

Plenty of motivational talks, lectures, and hadiths lead us to believe that we Muslims are to be forgiven somehow at the end and, therefore, will be allowed to enter the paradise. But we tend to forget about the horrifying trials, and severe punishments that Allah, Exalted is He, has warned us through the holy Quran.

As a result, many of us become complacent about our deeds being oblivious of the fact that we must remain vigilant of our sins.

We sinners often get befooled by the misconceptions of those motivational verses of Quran and hadiths and rely on the condonation of Allah, Exalted is He, in the judgment day. Thus, undeterred by the impending punishments, we keep committing sins, in the hope of being forgiven by Allah, the all-merciful.

So, it's not actually the hope of paradise that hold us from disobeying our lord. Rather it's the trepidation of the hellfire that deters us from sinning when we sincerely fear it.

Ibn-al-Jawzee, may Allah SWT have his mercy on him, has tried to depict the whole scenario in this book. And he also clarified why we should bear the combination of hope and fear in our hearts at the precise degree, to earn the satisfaction and mercy of Allah SWT both in life and afterlife.

"There- fore, I have collected herein intimidating narrations, warnings against wrongdoings, narratives portraying the punishment and stories that bring discontent to hearts in order to facilitate: the assured to become anxious; the hardened [hearts] to become sof- tened; the dried [tear ducts] to become flowing; and the lazy to become motivated."

... and it serves its purpose! page after page, my heart becomes restless and shakes with all the reminders. Indeed, Allah's mercy encompasses everything but never forget that His punishment is severe.

he who is truly shy of allah, let him preserve his head and what is perceives, let him preserve his stomach and what is desires, let him remember death and afflictions, and he who desires the hereafter abandons the adornments of this world. he who performs all of these is the one who is shy of allah as he should be.

The translation itself is not great but thankfully most errors do not impede understanding. The book is full of powerful reminders of the transient nature of life and importance of using ones time correctly.

As Allah has told us, death is indeed the destroyer of all pleasures. I am grateful for having been guided to pick this at the bookstore. It puts things into perspective. Time and time again we forget about the akhirah, on a daily basis. This is a book I want to remember till my last breath.

This is something to keep close by and read now and then, as this book tells us about the reality of this temporary life - i.e, death. The translator has done a good job.
