This book is a fantastic blend of history and fiction. From beginning to end, the characters, settings, and multple plots all feel real, yet it has those elements of fiction we all love: a large cast of characters with their own personalities, goals, and faults; vibrant settings; and plots and subplots with so many twists and turns that it will keep you turning pages to find out what happens next. Whether you know anything about Russian history or not, this book is sure to entertain you and keep you on the edge of your seat as you keep reading to learn what will happen next.

Very entertaining novel starting in 1917 just before the Bolshevik coup and then taking place during the Civil war as our heroes fortunes get intermingled with the desperate attempts of the White forces to get rid of the criminals that took over their country, but the brutality and ruthlessness of the Soviet regime ensure its victory.
Klim - who is as close as it gets to a modern picaresque hero, naive, well-intended and hence taken advantage of all the time, but somehow surviving his many (mis)adventures - and Nina, who resembles to a large extent Maugham's (anti)heroine from Of Human Bondage, interested only to get by (though with extenuating circumstances as she was born poor and then managed to marry a count, only for her husband to die in war and leave her in debt, then getting back on her feet by running a factory only for the Bolsheviks to come and steal everything from her and that is just the start of her saga...), so exploiting Klim's infatuation with her to the maximum, are really compelling characters as is the large supporting cast. And of course, the epic Russian sweep adds a lot to the novel.
Fast paced and on occasion getting a bit borderline to jumping the shark so to speak, but overall kept my interest end to end and volumes 2/3 are definitely next

Здравствуйте! Люблю читать хорошие книги (и слушать их аудио-версии), но про этот сайт узнал только вчера, и решил внести «свои 5 копеек», высказаться :-).
Считаю, что мне очень повезло, когда несколько лет назад (летит время!!!) я случайно нашел и начал читать книгу Эльвиры Барякиной "Аргентинец". Сначала книга меня заинтересовала тем, что там со сознанием дела и с большой любовью описаны уголки моего любимого Нижнего Новгорода. Но через несколько страниц я уже не мог оторваться от книги по другой причине - она меня захватила. Я не литературный критик, поэтому не могу пояснить почему именно так получилось, но факт, что от книги не мог оторваться и практически "проглотил ее залпом', читать было очень интересно, легко, а в некоторых местах даже познавательно, (хотя, IMHO, меня удивить и "завлечь" трудно). Кроме того, я был "мысленно согласен" с позицией, с точкой зрения автора. Я бы эту книгу надо включил в программу средней школы. Потому, что о тех временах книга рассказывает более объективно и правильно чем современные учебники истории. Понимаю, что такое вряд ли сейчас возможно, но надеюсь, что это произойдет в будущем.
В конце книги я увидел email и приглашение написать автору. Написал, и ... получил доброжелательный человечный ответ, а сейчас это многого стоит... Это было как автограф на книге ))).
Я с интересом "отслеживал" в Фейсбуке и на сайте Эльвиры время публикации следующих книг трилогии и с удовольствием читал их сразу после публикации. И всякий раз было жаль, когда книга заканчивалась. ))) Сейчас перечитываю "Аргентинца", уже не спеша, смакуя. )).

This book is amazing! Книга замечательная во многих отношениях. Очень легкий язык. Одновременно, за счет таланта автора передать атмосферу, буквально растворяешься в ситуации, времени и переживаешь вместе с героями все их эмоции. По моему мнению, хорошей назвать книгу можно тогда, когда тебе не терпится узнать что будет дальше. И вот так написаны все книги Эльвиры.

Роман очень атмосферен. Как будто находшься в том времени, дышишь вместе с главными героями одним воздухом. Взаимоотношения людей, их любовь, их переживания описаны очень чутко, невозможно остаться равнодушной ни к одному из героев романа!

The back of the book states "Perfect for fans of A Gentleman in Moscow" "and Fall of Giants". Not in anyone's wildest dreams can you compare Baryakina to Towles and Follett. Her characters are flat and one-dimensional; I never felt invested in any one of them. Her writing is simplistic and has no depth. I kept reading hoping the book would improve, but am giving up just over half way through the book. Investing two evenings in this book is enough for me.

If you love books, don’t miss Elvira Baryakina’s Russian Treasures. It tells the story of a Russian journalist, now a citizen of Argentina, who comes to Russia to claim his inheritance. But the year is 1917, and the Bolsheviks seize power and confiscate all private property from the people. He looses all that he has, and only one thing keeps him going—his love for Nina, the woman who never gives up.
It’s a good story brimming with irony, and it’s full of unexpected details only a Russian-born author could know.

The cost of war, the cost of love
An exploration of humanity at its finest and worst. Baryakina escorted me through a heartwarming, heartwrenching experience of a people losing their world. So effective is Baryakina's tale, that the headlines of today's refugees now carry with them a deeper impact on my conscience. I look forward to reading more of Baryakina's work, after a short pause to catch my breath.

Прочитала трилогию про Аргентинца с давно забытым удовольствием и абсолютным приоритетом чтения над всеми другими текущими занятиями. Удивительное ощущение сопричастности и сопереживания. Такое проникновение в эпоху, осмысление происходящего! Понимаю, что за этим стоит труд исследователя, но читается, как рассказ очевидца. Умно, исторически выверено, увлекательно и интересно!

Получила удовольствие от прочтения. Интересные герои, динамичный сюжет, впечатление исторической достоверности - видно, что автор серьезно исследовал тему. Больше всего понравился нешаблонный подход. Тема революции и гражданской войны здесь раскрывается не через "классы-массы", а через судьбы простых людей, за приключениями которых хочется следить. Спасибо! Будем читать дальше :) Рекомендую всем, кто интересуется хорошей беллетристикой, историей вообще и историей гражданской войны в России в частности.

Luiza Hartmann: Книга на самом деле необыкновенно глубоко вск��ывает события , происшедшие в революционой Росии . Автор - Эльвира Барякина - затягивает читателя в самую гущу событий , что даёт возможность читателю не только почувствовать себя свидетелем , но и переживать эмлцианольно вместе с героями романа и ужас , и страх и любовь . Исскустно написано ! Спасибо .

I enjoyed learning about this time in Russian history through the lives of Nina, Klim and the others. The flow of the book was variable - some interesting (I can't put it) and some very slow (when will this end) sections. It was translated from Russian, so that may account for some of the slower parts. Some words don't seem to be translated correctly and the punctuation is not great. Overall, it's worth reading if you want to know how it feels to have your government overthrown.
I'm not sure I'll read the second book - but the ending lends itself nicely to a sequel.

After reading a basic history of the Bolshevik Revolution, I "picked up" this novel on the Kindle app and thoroughly enjoyed it. The author did a great job of weaving in a fictional, dramatic story of love and survival amidst actual history. I would recommend to all history buffs, especially those who enjoy reading historical fiction. One of the few constructive criticisms I have is that the author needs better editors for her next books. There were a good number of errors which ultimately didn't take away much from the story, but did take away a bit from the quality of the novel itself.

Here is another great work by Elvira Baryakina! I enjoyed reading some of her other books and now I bought Russian Treasures. This book is written on the same high level of quality and as addictive. I love the characters and would like to meet them again. It is a beautiful historic piece and a beautiful story at the same time. I am glad that it translated into English well and now more people can enjoy it.

This novel is not about the historical events of the Russian revolution of 1917, it is much deeper. It is about the fate of people caught in the maelstrom of the events of that terrible time, about how life can change overnight, how everything can collapse and how, despite fate, not to lose yourself and the people who are dear to you. And this is relevant at all times. I sincerely advise you to read this exciting and very emotional novel!

Wonderful novel
A lot have already been said about the Bolshevik Revolution of 1917, but in Russian Treasures you see everything from another side. The love story captured me from the first pages, and till the very end I could hardly breathe. It is the novel where real facts are woven into a fictional story. Those who are interested in Russian history will definitely love the story, all others will like the characters and story line between them.

A great novel that I would highly recommend. I have read many books on the subject of the Russian Revolution, but none from the viewpoint of a person who truly understand the nature and the way of thoughts of both sides, the communists and their adversaries.
I cared deeply about the characters, and I was engaged so much that I missed my bus stop which had never happened before.

Interesting story. What I liked was the background of the Russian Revolution. What was hard was dealing with the main characters. It was like one step forward two steps back and after awhile I grew tired of their trials and tribulations. I will probably read the next one but I'm not quite ready for another round of Klim!

The overall portrayal of the time during the revolution and intervention is very good. Anyone with an interest in this time will enjoy the observations of the events told from the perspective of the characters. The plot is engaging, too.

Russian Treasures, by Elvira Barry is aptly named, for it is rich with detailed personal stories of how life really was in a revolutionary age; individual tales of love, hope, and desire, against the background of war and social conflicts. Masterfully told, Barry successfully integrates storytelling with historic elements to paint a grand narrative of the human condition reflecting not merely the personal but also the political. History comes to life in the stories of her characters, highly developed, complex, at times beautiful at other times tragic. I can't give you any spoilers but I can promise you an invigorating exposition of personal psychology and collective forces await you. The book left me wanting more, to go more deeply into the histories and stories and psychologies: and best of all there are more! Barry wrote several other books too and I imagine based on the quality and depth of this one that they too will bring facets of the human character and condition to the fore that might not have been treated in Treasures! In short: a multifaceted diamond awaits you that you may take as guidance, inspiration - and warnings! Like I said, no spoilers, but don't be surprised when you are.

I found it a little repetitive , while it was accurate in telling us the facts and the situation back then , and, as it sadly keeps repeating itself in Cuba, Venezuela, and other "Socialist"/Communist countries today, I found myself skipping a lot of "filler" repetitive paragraphs to get to the plot of what was going to happen to the main characters.
The denouement, was a cop out to make you buy another book , but I won't , because I fear I would have to wade through more of the same, which is too bad, because the plot is real, as I am a refugee, from Communist oppression, I, my family and friends, have been through similar, situations , without the snow...Can attest to.

Вот это действительно уж времечко ДЕЙСТВИЯ было. Вот бы ЭВОЛЮЦИЕЙ (вместо революции) планету качнуть! Что, кстати я (Лайла Вандела) и делаю своим творчеством. Спасающего планету моветона рассказы, да ещё при этом настоящие развлекательные хитЫ - тоже хочу перевести и разместить на таких же площадках, где и Elvira Baryakina.
