Demain Berlin

Tobias, Armand, Franz, ils sont trois. Atterris à Berlin un peu par hasard en quête d’un nouveau départ, la ville va leur offrir une nouvelle normalité, presque une nouvelle famille. La vie paraît simple, les filles fument dans les cafés, on parle pendant des heures, dans toutes les langues, on peint, on écrit un peu, on cherche un lit pour la nuit. Et quand on est seul, qu’il neige dehors, on peut toujours danser jusqu’à l’épuisement au Berghain-panoramabar. Il y fait chaud, on croise un ami, on avale quelque chose pour vivre plus fort et on oublie le passé, on s’oublie. C’est bon. On a trouvé notre nouvelle famille. Les druffis, c’est comme ça qu’on nous appelle.
Un jour on quittera Berlin. Mais pas tout de suite, pas ce soir, demain...

On a whim I picked up this book in an independent bookstore in Brunswick (as I am known to do) attracted by the title as I will be travelling to Berlin in the coming few weeks. This was an intense and powerful novel that exposed me to the darker "underbelly" of this European capital - drugs, debauchery and general anarchy. The prose was such that the story flowed like a stream where the reader was occasionally taken on twists and turns that one could not see coming. A different style of novel that is certainly unlike others I have read before. Coop-Phane is only 30 so I will be interested to read more of his novels as his career progresses. This story, although unusual in style, has piqued my interest in a fascinating cultural city that I look forward to exploring later in October.

Tomorrow Berlin is a short, sharp novel about young men struggling to find a future in a city’s underbelly. It follows Tobias, Armand, and Franz, who all end up in Berlin thanks to the ups and downs of life. Once there, they can dance the entire weekend away in the city’s famous clubs, fuelling themselves with drugs and desperation. No matter what happens, though, the downward spiral looms over all three of them.

Translated from French, the novel has a distinctive feel and a snappy pace, moving between the stories of the three characters as the narrative shows them growing up and ending up in Berlin. Once there, the book has a combination of landmarks and U-Bahn stations, detailed descriptions of going into the infamous club Berghain, and references to things like a Club Mate bottle that evoke the city in a minimalistic way. However much it is a story of Berlin, however, it is also a story of the grimy side of many cities, the worlds of drugs and sex and living outside of a seemingly respectable normality. These are not characters who necessarily looked for the path, but it is the one that found them. As the novel says, “the unfortunate ones are punished because they don’t know how to cope with their lives.”

Tomorrow Berlin is a fast-paced journey into the dark heart of a city, built around lost characters and their interactions in a way similar to other novels about the seedy life of cities. Its combination of drugs, clubbing, and a low-key narrative may not appeal to everyone, but it is a stylish read with a melancholy edge and a picture of a city at its centre.

Trois adolescents perdus dans une réalité décevante. La drogue est proche et à portée de main. Oscar Coop-Phane nous ouvre la porte des boîtes ou GHB, speed et autres petits remontants s'échangent comme des petits pains. Un roman hors du commun et sincère sur les sensations que procurent les substances illicites. Sentiments et désirs y sont précieux et destructeurs.

Tellement mauvais que je ne suis pas arrivée à la fin. Entre les clichés sur les soirées au Berghain, et de manière générale la ville de Berlin, et l'invisibilisation et l'objectivation des rares femmes qui traversent le récit, jamais nommées "ces jolies femmes blondes" "creux de ses seins"... Je me demande vraiment à quoi sert ce récit.

Le destin de 3 mecs aux vies bien différentes mais qui vont se joindre dans les tumultes de la vie nocturne Berlinoise.
Pas le livre de l'année mais se lit bien.

Ein Buch über Orientierungslosigkeit und Drogenexzesse. Nicht besonders ergreifend, eher mitleidserregend. Wechselnder Erzählstil, der das Buch zumindest schnell lesen lässt.

Un vrai coup de cœur.
L'écriture de O. Coop-Phane est douce et poétique. Il a le pouvoir de vous faire rendre ses personnages attachants et de vous faire ressentir chacune de leur émotion, vous mettant un coup de point direct dans l'estomac.
J'ai peut-être été particulièrement touché par ce livre car vivant moi-même Allemagne, je suis confrontée à ce monde là. Ce monde de débauche et de clubs qui restent ouverts plus de 48 heurs, à propos desquels il y a beaucoup de "on dit" mais où seul les personnes qui y vont savent ce qui s'y passent vraiment. Je ne suis pas une experte des soirées techno mais on est tous en contact avec cela, d'une certaine manière ou d'une autre, et on connait tous au moins une personne qui est comme Armand, qui découvre cela et qui s'en extasie, qui se sent "un peu plus vivant" du vendredi soir au dimanche soir. C'est une atmosphère très particulière autour de cela, quelque chose que nous ne connaissons pas outre-Rhin, et qui n'est pas toujours facile à comprendre, mais O. Coop-Phane en a capturé l'essence et partage cela très bien. En espérant que chacun sache s'arrêter avant que "tout devienne si moche".

Natürlich muss ein Franzose das so ziemlich beste gegenwärtige ''Berlin-Buch'' schreiben und nicht einer von den gutbürgerlichen Schreiberchen-Lehrlingen aus Hildesheim und Leipzig oder eine/r den überhypten Shitstorm-''Journalisten'', die nichts zu sagen haben, in Spießer-Allemagne. Chapeau oder was soll man da noch sagen. Gutes Buch.
