Chodzi o to, że tak jak pierwszy raz usłyszałam muzykę Arctic Monkeys w grudniu 2014 roku (to było "Do I Wanna Know?") i od razu zakochałam się w tych piosenkach i nastoletnim celebrity crushem w Turnerze (nie mówię wcale, że mi przeszło do tej pory), to odnalazłam ich tuż po ich przejściu na przerwę i przez lata nie miałam jakiegoś fanowskiego doświadczenia. I jeszcze z wiekiem stałam się mniej skora do wchodzenia w jakiekolwiek fandomy, więc nawet nie miał mnie kto doedukować. Muzyka Małp (i Death Ramps) została ze mną do dzisiaj, pełni znaczącą rolę w moim życiu, ubóstwiam Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino, ale jak ostatnio wzięłam z bratem udział w muzycznym konkursie/quizie i spektakularnie poległam na pytaniu, gdzie odpowiedzią byli Arctic Monkeys, zdałam sobie sprawę, jak mało tak naprawdę wiem o grupie z Sheffield. Ostatnio kupiłam sobie akurat tę książkę na przecenie - dostałam więc zadanie od razu się za nią zabrać i nadgonić wiedzę.
I dla tego jednego celu książka ta jest idealna - bo dowiedziałam się, jak ekipa się poznała, jak rozpoczęła swoją przygodę, z jakimi ludźmi współpracowała, na jakich konceptach tworzyła swoją muzykę, naprawdę, jest to skarbnica wiedzy. Cieszę się z tego, ile dowiedziałam się o producentach zespołu, ostatnio bardziej zaczęłam doceniać tę część przemysłu muzycznego. Tylko, że... czułam się w wielu momentach jak pod lawiną nazwisk, nazw miejsc, klubów i festiwalów, czuję, że te informacje były potrzebne, ale powinny być inaczej rozłożone w tekście, a nie w postaci czasami prawie że niekończących się akapitów. Boję się, jak mało z tego mi ostatecznie utkwi w głowie, a przecież chciałam wiedzieć Wszystko. I są to wątki naprawdę ciekawe.
A jednocześnie czuję, że jak na zespół o członkach z takimi bogatymi osobowościami, takimi pięknymi historiami i niesamowitymi, poetyckimi tekstami, to jest w tej książce zdecydowanie o nich za mało - nie ma tutaj tego, co wywołuje u muzyków i fanów taką pasję i miłość do tej muzyki. W książce zostały przywołane cudowne historie z koncertów i gal z udziałem Turnera i jego przyjaciół, i to były dla mnie najjaśniejsze momenty podczas czytania, ale jakoś szybko po nich pomykaliśmy, nigdzie się nie zatrzymując. Chciałabym dokładnej analizy tego zespołu, wszystkiego, co daje mu taką wartość, chciałabym, żeby ktoś mi pięknie opowiedział to wszystko, chciałabym analizy i interpretacji. I tak, jak myślę sobie, jaką cudowną książkę, nie, opowieść możnaby o tym muzycznym zjawisku napisać, i porównuję te marzenie z książką Osborne'a, choć bardzo staranną, spójną i pełną faktów, napisaną też z uwielbieniem, to... to sporo mi brakuje i trochę mi żal.
No i jeszcze brakuje mi trochę polotu literackiego w tej historii.
To nie jest tak, że książka Osborne'a jest zła, bo nie jest, absolutnie nie, jest, jak powiedziałam, porządną, staranną i pozytywną historią Małp, autor może pochwalić się ogromną wiedzą i świadomością na temat przemysłu muzycznego, i mega sympatycznie się go słucha, i dała mi dokładnie to, czego poszukiwałam, ale... chciałam jednak więcej. Nie czuję się w pełni usatysfakcjonowana.
Za to jeszcze bardziej pokochałam ten zespół, i nabrałam jeszcze większego szacunku do Alexa Turnera; to niesamowita postać, mam nadzieję, że kiedyś sama pojadę na jego koncert i stworzymy własne historie.
I teraz nawet łatwiej jest mi zrozumieć ich ostatni album.
AM7, WIEM, ŻE NADCHODZISZ. Nie mogę się ciebie doczekać.

With a bit excessive detailing on gig venues and dates, this is definately a fine, pre-AM era collection of small concert and team happenings as well as steps and details that paved the way to the phenomenon we now call their 5th album and TBH+C. With AM7 upon us, this is a perfect read to get the jist of why the Arctic Monkeys changed the music industry from the far off-land of 2006 MySpace-without a MySpace account.

A book about my favourite band should be fantastic, no?
The most interesting part is the beginning, that tells in a bit more detail the ascension to fame. However, maybe because I already knew Arctic Monkeys deeply, I found the book a little disappointing. I think it lacked a bit of new information - much of it can be found even in Wikipedia -, but what intrigued me was the precocity of the book. I don't think it was the right time for its launch, because the band was in the process of changing completely, as shown by the release of "R U Mine?" the previous year. It was clear they were in redefinition. Unfortunately, a book about Arctic Monkeys pre-AM is already obsolete (even though AM is low on my list of their favourite albums, I cannot deny its enormous impact).
Still, as a fan of the band, I read it, but I wasn't the fascinating experience I was hoping for. I don't think it will harm one's experience with the band, but it won't change their life.

Un compendio de trivia acerca de una banda cuya celebrada "innovación" en la manera de difundir su música (por internet), ahora es la realidad de cualquiera que quiera compartir su música con el mundo. Su mérito, además de tener buenas canciones, viene de haber estado en el lugar correcto, en el momento correcto. Nunca han tenido que ser sus propios community managers, como cualquier músico/a/x ocal con muchísimo más talento tienen que hacer día con día. Ahora mismo puede permitirse la movida farol de no seguir a nadie en instagram, porque en realidad, sólo van a tener seguidores automáticamente.
¿Cosas que valga la pena saber? 'Suck it and See', el disco más nuevo cuando fue lanzado este libro publicitario, resulta ser el álbum más parecido a un 'Surfer Rosa' de Pixies, por el enfoque crudo de grabación y producción. Recuerdo que, en 2011, ya había comentarios acerca de que estaban perdiendo su esencia al ser más "pop", sólo porque Alex aprendió a escribir mejores melodías y ser más conciso y musical con sus narrativas, con sus palabras. Todo esto, a los fans les sonó como comercialización del sonido; yo siempre pensé que SIAS era su mejor trabajo a la fecha, y 'AM' me sonó igualemente refrescante. Aunque Osborne no cuenta nada fascinante, sí tienes la sensación de que la misma banda (y con gran mérito creativo a Alex, sin ganas de pecar de admirar demasiado la figura del vocalista/líder) está orgullosa de su progreso musical, y de que no romantizan sus inicios, ni por asomo, tanto como sus fans. Como ya dije, su "innovación" en distribución ahora es la realidad por default, y aún así, los músicos la tenemos difícil si no nos importa hacer tiktoks.
El chiste final es que, aunque resulta medio desapegado de los miembros de la banda como personas, Osborne termina venteneando, en retrospectiva, que Matt Helders se volvió un amigo íntimo del pederasta Sean "P. Diddy" Combs, una persona que, desde entonces, ya tenía fama de violentador, golpeador y abusador sexual de mujeres. Arctic Monkeys subieron vlogs presumiendo de tener fiestas en su casa. Por más poético o sagaz que puedan llegar a ser con sus himnos post-punk sobre la vida nocturna —y con un incidente de acoso sexual de Miles Kane a una reportera de Spin, Rachel Brodsky, en 2016—, estos sujetos no parecen ser mucho más profundos que lo que aparentan las palabras rápidas de Turner en sus rolas (eso fue un 'understatement', para ponernos británicos).
Dos estrellas por tal revelación, de un viejo fan.

I don't think Ben Osborne is a fan of Arctic Monkeys. If he is, he's not a good enough writer to transfer it to the page.
You've got to take this kind of book for what it is. Naturally, I didn't expect there to be any kind of involvement by the Monkeys themselves, but it doesn't feel like there's any involvement by anybody. The book feels like a complication of interviews, blog posts and lists of concerts, and sometimes it's more of a recital of tour dates rather than a biography. For example, there is hardly any info on the band members. I think I know one more thing about Matt now than I did going into it, which isn't to say much because I'm a new fan with very limited knowledge. Nick hardly got an introductory description. There's more on Alexa than there's of him and Jamie combined.
But, since I am a new fan, I found this book to be a nice summary on the Arctic Monkeys up until the point of publication (which was one month before AM was announced and five months before it was released, so pretty unlucky timing made it immediately dated). I got an overview which I wouldn't have got otherwise, so if that's the kind of thing you're looking for - check it out.

I have a feeling that author od this book never had a chance to talk to any of the band members and just gathered data from articles written about monkeys. Mostly tour dates mixed with random facts and many weirdly placed digressions. ;)
