Assigned to partner Detective Daryl Chandler in the investigation of a series of child abductions, Special Agent Blythe Kent is both intrigued by the cases and the woman bringing them to the attention of New York’s Deviant Data Unit. Detective Chandler knows she can find every child in her case files. Possessing an almost uncanny sixth sense, and using good old-fashioned detective work, Daryl has been drawn to a wealthy suburb where she believes the children are. With Daryl and Blythe posing as a loving couple desperate to adopt a child of their own, Daryl believes they can draw the kidnapper out and bring all the missing children home. Neither of them is aware that unearthly hands have a stake in the abductions, and that when it comes to facing demons, they are going to need a protector of their own to get everyone home safe and sound.
This is book 2 in the Wings series and I’m happy to say it was much better than the first book. This is an urban fantasy/crime/romance book. I like those categories and thought the whole angel/demon storyline was quite good. The problem with book 1 is that while the premise is there, the story just did not come together. I’m really pleased to say this book 2 was exactly what I was hoping for.
This book has two new mains. A detective from Vermont named Daryl and a profiler and Special Agent named Blythe. Blythe was a secondary character who had very small roll in book 1. Daryl is a woman who has always been able to sense where missing children are. She is not psychic, but doesn’t really understand how she does what she does. She asks Blythe to go undercover as her wife to try to break up a kidnaping ring disguised as actual adoption. The more time the women spend together, the more an attraction grows. Will they be able to find the missing children and work towards a relationship?
What was great about this book is Davis handled the paranormal aspects, the crime aspects, but also took the time put in a good romance. I really enjoyed the romance. The couple had a ton of chemistry and the sex scene was good and steamy. What really helped too is that both characters were so darn likeable. I have been reading books with blah characters lately. It was so nice to genuinely really like and care about both of them.
I mentioned in my review of the first book I thought these books might be standalone. But that wasn’t really the case. The main characters from book 1 did appear in this book and play a part in it. They had some scenes totally on their own and scenes with the new mains. So here comes the question do you have to read book 1 first? I’m leaning towards no. While yes, this new world would be better explained and you would know the mains from book 1, but I think enough is explained that you could pick up the story if you started here. The other reason is this book is much better than book 1. I’m worried people who read that might not be as motivated to read this one. If you are new to this series it is your choice, but I think you can start here.
Book 3 is coming out shortly and I am now excited to read it. I really hope Blythe and Daryl make an appearance in it. They are great characters and I really want to read more about them. I definitely recommend this to urban fantasy/romance fans.
2.8 stars. I skipped the first one in the series as suggested by several other reviewers. And this second book in the series can be read as a standalone but the book just didn't work for me.
All that's paranormal feels slapped on top of a regular police story. And it's used as an excuse to stall. Nothing happens until the magical angel dudes in white suits give them info. It's a deus ex machina. There's no flow to the story. It stagnates for most of the book until the author decided to play the angel card. Furthermore, the paranormal content was so minuscule that the book would've worked better as a regular police story. It added nothing to the story, in fact, I felt it detracted from it.
I also didn't like the romance part. The characters are fine I guess if not too perfect, they basically have no flaws. Like at all. One's a perfect femme while the other is a perfect butch. And then they go from intense attraction from afar to "I love you" in a span of what, a day? I don't like soul mates themes so I don't find that as a sufficient explanation on why it goes from 20 to 100 in a blink of an eye.
No pussyfooting around in this book as angels and demons are actual entities. It is no surprise that heaven and hell also exists. Oh my! The police/federal agency protocols seemed very buttoned up and that only made sure the mixture of top-notch investigative work blended with the dark side and angelic good folks really a super treat. Additionally, the sweetest of romances heats up magnificently into a supremely passionate and sexy affair with tendrils of lifelong commitment blossoming. The best of marriages, for me, are wonderful mysteries with procedural underpinnings and delicious supernatural integration. So enjoy the really good folks battling the really bad dudes as this multi-layer enchantment sweeps to its upbeat conclusion.
Blythe Kent is a Special Agent within a new division of the FBI, I believe. Since there is no Deviant Data Unit actually within the real FBI and the term ‘feds’ gets tossed around a lot, I cannot precisely describe the governmental organizational structure. However, it isn’t really necessary. Suffice it to say, the NYC DDU takes on a case as presented to them from a Vermont P.D. detective. Blythe is immediately and strongly affected by this Vermont police detective and let the sparks fly!
Daryl Chandler is the detective from Vermont. Her father eventually became Chief of Police in Daryl’s hometown and Daryl became a detective there also. However, Daryl was known to have a particularly high success rate in finding missing children. That became her cause célèbre. A particular instance required her to seek some assistance, and therein lies the core of this story. I was completely absorbed by the baby abductions occurring within days of birth and their seeming disappearance off the face of the Earth. Oh yes, that is a very engaging centerpiece chronicle. Getting to know Daryl in conjunction with Blythe was most definitely another super draw here. Their undercover personas are as a loving lesbian married couple. They happen to both be attracted to each other in actuality. What a delightful but somewhat complicated scenario since undercover protocol insists they not engage in any standard loving couple activities. Great fun!
This story was just a delicious delight with so many levels of intrigue on the case level and the personal level. Plus, the celestial and diabolical beings were incredibly intriguing. There are a few weak points, but I was riveted from beginning to end and I certainly will look forward to additional books by Leslie Davis. By all means, give this story a total once over!

*This commentary applies to all three books in this "Wings" trilogy.*
After coming off a reading high with Lesley Davis' latest brilliant romance novel, "Playing with Fire," I wanted to explore more of her writing and stories. Imagine my delight when I saw that she also wrote in the paranormal genre! Why, it's only one of my favourite genres! And it was a trilogy! Plus, when mixed with crime/mystery and romance, too?! Cor! Not only that but....
Angels & Demons?! Gods & monsters?! Demigods?! Oracles?! Immortals?! Awakened (humming "was blind but now I see....") souls?! Possessions?! All congregated in the same time-space with, dare I say...(gasp!)...Ordinary humans running around, too?! Good vs Evil?! Heaven & Hell?! The Underworld?! Bloody hell!
Also, maybe it's the fact that I've just recently watched Amazon's Neil Gaiman/Terry Prachett-adapted mini-series, "Good Omens," which I absolutely adored because of its sheer audacity, satire and endlessly hilarious presentation! So, that "heavenly/hellishly," "divine" feel prolly lent to my immediate pounce on Davis' Trilogy, besides my obvious interest in the genre! Either way....
3 words: Hook. Line. Sinker.
By the end of the trilogy, I was well and truly entertained, satiated, satisfied. In ALL aspects of what I was looking for in this particular paranormal angle, including obviously, a delish romance wrapped around every installment! Best few hours spent devouring all three books back-to-back, in one fell swoop! End of.
2nd book in the series and just as great as the 1st! Rafe, Ashley and their Angel Eli return for part of the story but you truly fall in love with Daryl and Blythe as well!
I’ve read Lesley Davis’ Playing trilogy but had been avoiding reading her Wings Trilogy because I’m not the biggest fan of paranormal romances. This is the second of the Wings books and now I have to read the other two.
This book sets up a great crime/detective story and Lesley wove in paranormal elements very well. Detective Daryl has a fascinating ability to always find her lost kids, alive or dead. When she feels drawn towards a series of child kidnappings and the FBI isn’t trusting her hunches she approaches the DDU for help. She gets partnered with Agent Blythe and the two must go undercover to find the missing children and the culprits behind the kidnappings.
I love Blythe and Daryl and I adored the chemistry between them. The two of them together felt good, right and their fake marriage was amazing. The attraction between the two was instantaneous and it was nice to see romance blossom as the two pretended to be in love with each other. (Epilogue spoilers, tagging in case)
I had one main problem with the story and that was just that I felt there was a bit too much of Rafe and Ashley. They made sense for the story and the investigation, but I wish less time had been spent with them.
The supernatural elements of this book were a key plot point, but they also weren’t brought up at every pivotal point. The paranormal entities aren’t constantly in their face even if they are operating in the background at the time. It was a nice additional layer to an already good story.
This book is a fun, engaging read and I loved almost everything about it. If you want a good story with an engaging plotline and practically no relationship drama, read it.
I really enjoyed this book the entire series was very good. I have read this and twice and will probably read it again. The characters are well developed and likable. I find this series exciting and the love story was very good. Thanks for another winner.
