Recognize obsessive thoughts that can cause worry and panic, and gain the skills to change unhealthy feelings of distress in everyday life.
It is only human to worry about problems in our lives--but for some, obsessing for weeks and months, avoiding social events and situations due to feelings of panic can become a regular part of our lives. If any of these describe you or a loved one, then you or they may be almost anxious.
Those of us who are almost anxious may never address the issue because we don't fully meet the diagnostic criteria for an anxiety disorder. In Almost Anxious , Luana Marques, PhD, describes the spectrum of almost anxiety symptoms, from normal situational anxiety on one end to a full-blown diagnosable anxiety disorder on the other.
Drawing on case studies and the latest research, she gives you the tools assess whether your or a loved one's worry is a problem; gain insight on how to intervene with a loved one; discover proven strategies to change unhealthy feelings of distress; gauge the physical, psychological, and social impact of your anxiety symptoms; and determine when and how to get professional help when needed.
I was hoping that this would be more focused on the point of anxiety that is helpful (eustress) rather than the unhelpful anxiety (distress) but unfortunately, it focused more on the latter. Regardless, a helpful book for those who need to manage the unhelpful type of anxiety.
Pretty nice way to view my own anxiety. I will definitely be using this anxiety tool kit 🙂 It reads fast and all the characters are relatable, which makes it easier to understand their outcomes.
This was a good into book for people who have never been to therapy but argue with themselves frequently about whether they should start going to therapy. It gives an introduction to some basic concepts and a starter CBT toolkit—just enough to figure out what you should explore more via other sources. I found it thought-provoking, with equal parts empathy and friendly-shove-in-the-right-direction.
A good introductory book to anxiety for people that are not familiar with the full description of the disorder but also a new, fresh point of view for experienced psychotherapist. 100% would recommend.
Helpful reference to understand you are not the only one experiencing those sensations. Helpful to open perspective on what, how and why we feel what we feel and how to work on it.
The only two clarifying points in this book: 1) if you're anxious about something, and use avoidance tactics to put it off, you're likely to also then feel depression symptoms 2) your thoughts are different than your feelings ( you don't "feel like a failure"- you tell yourself, through your thoughts, that you are one
The rest is a lot of cheesy case studies and some tolerably interesting quizzes. About what I expected, but my library had it as an ebook when I wanted pop psych something
Only read this if you're new to anxiety as a topic, and perhaps to introspection in general, and want a very general overview and obvious examples
If you have anxiety read this book. There's no if ands or buts with it, it is the most concisely written book I've ever read. It's literally a therapist in book. I promise you won't regret it, read it if you have anxiety anywhere on the spectrum.
This a fantastic book that relates to a wide range of people!! Dr. Marques presents practical, usable tools for handling day to day stresses. I recommend this to anyone! What a great read!
