Really enjoyed the second in the Spiral series. Admittedly not as good as the first, but still pretty amazing! Loving the fictional military technology and acronyms. Carter is still a great badass and a decent (sort of) anti-hero who doesn't give a monkeys! And the ending was pretty powerful as well.
Genuinely the worst book I have EVER read. I picked it up from a second-hand store, thinking the premise seemed interesting, but I was so disappointed. It makes sense that this is the second in a series, but it gives NO indication to the casual reader as to why the "hero" has a second personality in his head. The fights are basically the hero getting beaten to within an inch of his life, but somehow winning, and it reads as though it was written by a 12 year old boy, who has just discovered the joy of swearwords - there seems to be zero editing to try and make this more reasonable. I'm no prude, and swearwords in and of themselves are no issue, but at omne point, I found myself counting the swears, and on two pages there were over 40 swearwords.
The only reason I still have my copy is because I feel that if I gave it to a charity shop, some other poor sucker might be lured in to reading the book...
Quake never stops. Against all possible odds, the hero Carter and his dual evil-personality Kade, attempt to usurp the madman Durell from destroying the planet. In principle this should be a good book. There is plenty of action, written in a way that ensures the scenarios are easy to imagine. However, for the main part it is repetitive fight scenes in which the characters take a extraordinary beating and just keep on going. Where Spiral was a showcase for the indestructible Carter, Quake unleashes the equally indestructible Kade, and this is the book's salvation. Kade is mean. Kade brings a little edge to what is a real no-brainer. The final nail though is the plot. Ancient mega-technology? Come on. Everything in Quake is exaggerated, from the heroes to the despicable villains, and it all makes for a really easy way to pass the time, but is not a book that you will want to read twice.
It really takes a lot for me to put down a book and say ope, not for me. I'm willing to read almost anything. I didn't realize that this was the second book in the series, but often I don't start in the first book in a series and am able to follow along just fine. But I got 3 chapters into this book and I honestly still have not a clue what is going on, and it isn't worth the energy to try to figure it out. This is a pass for me.
