The mysterious planet Crux suffers silently with a terrible ancient curse. Holy entities and scheming lords of Hell manipulate their children like pawns in an agonizingly long game of chess, while the first Cherub Innanna, creator of the realm and savior of the Nephalem, is shackled inside a pocket dimension in eternal exile. Meanwhile a savior - the mysterious Nilithar - is summoned to Crux. The events to follow haven't caught only the attention of the Cruxians, but the Angellove Society's as well. The fabled group investigates the ancient prophecy through Thomas and Andrew, a powerful half-vampire and a mage of unthinkable potential, who travel across galaxies to find the girl. Forces beyond imagination will clash in an epic battle of Light versus Darkness, as Crux changes not only its landscape, but its inhabitants as well, and the strangest and most unlikely of heroes will rise and stand against complete annihilation.

One of the major strengths of this novel is the writer’s ability to create full, detailed worlds. The world that Crux lives in is vast and well imagined, populated by characters that fit into the hellish landscape with ease.

The angels and demons in this novel are spot on. Palisera, for example, is an excellent character and exactly what she needs to be. She’s very ethereal, in both the descriptions of her and the way she speaks. However, there is an edge of something else in her that keeps her human enough to be interesting—some kind of strange compassion she shows towards Maar.

Maar, likewise, is a great character. He, like Kara, is defiant, but we get the impression he has a good reason to be so. Plus, he defies others within the rules of his own world, and he respects certain authorities (specifically, Palisera). He pays tribute to the order of his world, which makes him a very compelling character to follow along with.

One thing this novel is really good at is creating obstacles for its characters. Nothing ever comes easy for any of the characters, and just when the readers think the characters are in “the clear,” something else comes up to get in their way. This constant, consistent action makes for excellent tension and keeps the reader’s interest. It also forces the characters to continuously push themselves to their limits, and the readers get to see what each and every one of the characters is really made of. The tension keeps the reader on edge and the author makes a brilliant use of it.

If you are a lover of supernatural action/drama or high-fantasy novels, you will enjoy this book.

What if, one day, you’d find yourself thrown through space and stranded on a strange planet? What if the first thing you’d experience on that planet would be the meeting with malevolent creatures that wish you dead? When you don’t know why you got there or what is your purpose, things tend to get a little tough. And how about you having a special mission in that world and everything you want to do is live to see another day? So what should you do when you find out you’re the Nilithar and you have to save a Cherub from a magical prison?

Although she's short, thin, has a big mouth and pushes only twenty-five, Kara is a damn fine warrior. For the past years she served coffee in her hometown but she was born with the magical soul of the Nilithar, a being meant to serve a greater purpose. Not that she would be aware of that. So when she painfully lands in a strange desert lit by three suns and finds herself threatened with death by odd creatures speaking a language she, surprisingly, can understand, she knows she ended up in a world of trouble. Also known as Crux. A war is about to break loose while every living souls seems to want to witness her demise. Will she be able to save herself and reach her powers within? Will she prevent an entire planet from sinking into darkness?

Enter the hero, a blue-haired Fallen Nephalem warrior sent to protect her to fulfill her mission: release the mother of Crux, Innanna, a Cherub of infinite wisdom, imprisoned by Angels and Demons together, through a mischievous game of hide and seek.

Crux is home for the Nephalem, the offspring of Angels and Demons with humans and also a place for fable souls, creatures and aliens in all shapes and demeanors who didn’t find another place to rest. Misled and deceived, the two half-breed factions fight against each other for ages, unknowingly serving the goals of their Celestial fathers: annihilation, supremacy and then…silence. Along with them will fall every living breath on Crux, for sides were taken and all bets are off.

When Kara arrives, the games are in motion and the pawns are in place. The cruel fate that was meant for all creatures on Crux it is now impossible to fathom. An uprising so well coordinated by evil, that it would leave the entire realm at the mercy of chaos. Bravely trying to win the war, Maar is torn between his duty as the protector of the Nilithar and the pain of fighting against his brethren, while Kara still needs to discover who she truly is and forbid that world to crush into darkness. The plots are thicker than anyone imagined and she has to admit the evidence cooperates. They set for Enoch, Innanna’s altar, the battlefield, the key to absolution.

While danger hunts them with every step, Kara and Maar meet in their journey a bunch of crazy characters, from mages, to Devil pact-children, werewolves and cyborgs that join their quest to freedom. Not to mention brave Nephalem and an Infernal demon with a twisted sense of loyalty. In order to restore peace, they stand up against hellish armies and face peril, fueled only by their belief in justice. Their success depends not only on the stars who rule the fate of Crux, but on the truth in their hearts and the support of the most unlikely creatures.

What will happen when the foul players unleash an eternity-long plan destined solely for destruction while the resistance makes a final gambit for the fate of all existence on Crux? Be it Light or Darkness, the triumph of either one hangs on the frail power of a human soul.

This book has the flavor of life itself: it has style, it has rhythm, it is complex, well paced, alluring, funny and surprising at every step. It is sad, it is happy; it is glamorous and just as dark. With ups and downs and everybody going sideways, sometimes running around in circles until they are lost. And how good it feels to find what you were looking for and what glory lies in not being alone in the hardest of quests! And just as life itself, nothing with this book is what it seems and nothing is without meaning.

Beautifully written in a perfect English, although by a non-native speaker, this book just simply asks for more!

INTRODUCTION:
Is this book a regular Fantasy book? Perhaps this is the one important thing people are wanting to know, given the gargantuan volume of Fantasy books on the market nowadays.
The answer is both YES and NO. If you, by Fantasy, understand overused terms like "Vampire", "Werewolf", "Mage/ Wizard", "Dwarves/ Gnomes" and others alike, then YES, this is your typical Fantasy book. What makes it differ, however, is the way the author managed to get all those pesky cliches together and still NOT write a cheesy, uninspired, unoriginal and stereotypical story.
CHARACTERS:
I will be right to you: it is commercial. VERY commercial. But not in a bad way. The writing is highly visual, action-pumped and dynamic, with few...somewhat romantic spots. Most of the characters are credible, and some of them are really well built (take Thomas, Drew, Maar, etc). The book does indeed go with the dull "chosen one" recipe, but all the twists in the plot make it an enjoyable read. Apart from the fact that you're given the "Nilithar"/ Chosen one character, the plot does not follow a particular individual. I could go as far as to say there is no main character, however the earthling, Kara, does seem just a tiny bit more important than the other handful of characters directly involved in the plot. As I stated above, there are all those breeds you're surely fed up with, like Vampires, Undeads, Ghouls, Wraiths, Angels, Demons and whatnot. Despite the colossal pile of overused races, it NEVER feels wrong. Not regarding this, at least. The one thing I couldn't stand, however, was the pseudo-badass girl, Kara. Her lines can get irritatingly wrong sometimes, but thankfully this doesn't happen often. It did affect (just a little!) the overall feeling of the book for me, but not enough to spoil the fun.
PLOT:
The story follows a group of individuals through their struggle to release the Cherub, Innana, once exiled from the very Planet she had created, Crux (now endowed in mayhem by the never-ending battles between the High and the Fallen). In order to do so, the Nilithar, an otherwordly individual is needed. The plot is filled with twists, so it never gets tiresome. The amount of action will surely keep you hooked (maybe a bit confused at times, as it develops really fast)! It is indeed a real page-turner. I never once got bored reading.
CONCLUSION:
Crux manages to give you that "I wanna know what's next!" feeling at all times throughout the book.

(+)

-The overall story is good. Not the best out there, but reading was satisfying at all times.
-The characters are well built and have imposing personalities.
-Action! A lot of action!
-I liked the fact that there was no particular protagonist. It rather feels like a team in which every individual is given the same amount of importance.
-Nice Ending.

(-)

-Some lines are really out of place.
-A lot of characters, might get you confused.
-Action is sometimes hard to follow.

The overall impression was a really good one. It leaves you wanting for more. Would and will definitely recommend. Looking forward to reading a sequel. 9/10

Mazilu’s English is extraordinary – I never felt for a moment that this book was written by a non-native English speaker. I was impressed by the range of his vocabulary and I even looked up many words in the dictionary. From my perspective, a writer who created such a good dark fantasy novel directly in English has two more challenges (and perhaps two “duties”) left: to write a similar novel in Romanian (except Crâznic’s celebrated Gothic novel, I don’t see much competition) and to write a non-fantasy (“serious”) novel in English. I’m not in the habit of saying grand words but with his level of English, he would be able to able to emulate – let’s say – Nabokov. So as far as I’m concerned, Mazilu owes us at least two great novels.

The foreword written by Dana Dorian makes an interesting and supported claim: “[Andrei] takes you by the hand, but doesn’t lead you to a quiet spot in the library; instead, you suddenly find yourself transported in a live cinema …” It is true that Mazilu’s writing is highly visual and that his novel could nicely be turned into a movie. Directors like James Cameron (Avatar) or Tom Tykwer (Perfume) are suitable for the subtlety and originality of Andrei’s mythology. To continue this sci-fi line of argument, the star from Vampire Diaries, who also played in a TV series related to the story from Crux (Fallen), Paul Wesley would be a good choice for some of the human characters. I’m not sure that I would cast Nina Dobrev (Helena from Vampire Diaries) in Kara’s part, although there are several similarities. On the other hand, I don’t see a better Akaba than Jason Momoa (Conan) and a better Maar than Chris Hemsworth (Thor).

More about Mazilu's book here!

The author deserves praise for having orchestrated a complex plot, with numerous threads, for coordinating numerous characters and for having a good grasp on English. Overall, I appreciated this novel about as much as I did "The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever".

A Review of Crux by Serban Andrei Mazilu
Reviewed by: Wennie Conedy
3 out 5 stars

The battle of good versus evil. The fight between peace and war. These are the main elements of Crux, a paranormal story where beings exist in different dimensions, and where sworn enemies are bonded together to fight for a common cause.

There is Earth, where we humans exist. And there is Crux, where … others … exist. In his wisdom, the Creator fashioned Humans, Mage, Seraphims, Nephalems, the Fallen, Angels, the Meka and various other beings. He also created the cherub, Innanna, a powerful being second only to the Creator, who through her own powers created the world of Crux – a world where she envisioned all beings living together, intermingling and co-existing. The world of Crux is thrown in chaos when a pact is formed among the beings to banish and imprison Innanna, to preserve their world as they see it – divided between light and darkness, peace and chaos where chaos reigns supreme. There is only one way to free the Innanna and save Crux – through the Nilithar, with the guidance of Maar, and the support of surprising allies. There are tests, crucibles and a final battle to win. Will the Nilithar prevail?

Crux is not an easy book to get into. I found it a bit hard to keep track of all the different beings that populated this book. It didn’t help that the true premise of story wasn’t coming clearly across until halfway through.

There is such a juxtaposition and constant parallel of the character’s struggles to heavenly beings, hell bound souls, the battle of light versus dark, the salvation of souls and the freedom to make a choice. There is also the underlying message that each character or being is in constant battle with himself/herself, as personified by the character Maar. He has somehow channelled and learned how to suppress his true self which is guided by chaos and destruction and let his humanity dictate his decisions, actions and purpose.

I found it challenging to follow the story for the first few chapters. The way the author transitioned chapters was a bit jagged which I found to be disconcerting, but perhaps that was his purpose, showing the harsh nature of war and battle. There were situations that the author established but didn’t quite complete and led to some open questions that unfortunately were not addressed.

When the action started, the pace picked up, the weave of the story became tighter and more exciting. I loved the chapter where he very adroitly described the battle choreography as two allies fought side by side. I imagined it to be a ballet of sorts - a ballet that was violent, bloody which led to destruction.

Good versus evil. Light versus dark. It is a theme that has been addressed ad infinitum. The author had a very creative way of portraying this constant struggle, creatively using beings as we currently know them, and giving them new life and dimension.

It was refreshing to find a book that had a definite conclusion, as it seems a lot of the books are availing of the current trend to have books 2 or 3 to complete a story. The author ended the book in such a way as to allow further exploration of what happened to the characters after – and this would be something I would be interested to find out.

General Opinion: I have to say that I was very thrilled when Serban asked me to review his book and I was glad to accept. But because I had so many exams and problems, I couldn’t read it until yesterday and I want to apologize for this. I started reading “Crux’ yesterday at 10 o’clock and finished at 5am. This is an incredible fantasy and everyone should read it. I couldn’t put it down until the very last page. I am very pleased and amazed by this book !
What I liked the most: The world-building. It’s just wow! Such an incredible story, described with a lot of talent and passion. I loved the world that Serban created!
The book is full of action! I couldn’t get bored while reading it and the thought of sleep couldn’t make me put it down. So many things happen in just 320 pages (I can’t believe I read 320 pages in just one night! Lol) and this is stunning.
I seriously thing that this book has it’s on personality. No kidding here. It’s just outstanding. Different, with a great rhythm, story and world, this is probably the best fantasy I’ve read this year so far. “Crux” is more than a book. “Crux” is a real world, with strong, real characters and a story that sometimes Is so dark!
Another thing that made me LOVE this book is Kara. I haven’t met such a powerful character in a long time.Loved her!
What I disliked: Uhm…. Nothing?
Final Opinion: “Crux” is an incredible book! I loved every single word of it and I couldn’t ge enough of it! Best fantasy I’ve read this year!!
I recommend it to: Everyone, but mainly to fantasy lovers.
Would I read it again: Definitely!
Do I want to read the sequel: Do I need to say ‘Yes’?

I received this book in exchange for an honest review (LoP or Lovers of Paranormal)

I don't even know where to start with this book. All I can say is WOW!

Okay, there was one thing I really liked and one thing I really didn't like about the book. I'll start with what I didn't like, so I can end it on a positive note.

The characters in this story were too far off for me. Especially the angels/aliens in the beginning. Characters are very important to me; characters that I like or find fascinating are usually the only reason why I will continue to read a book. Angellove Society was a little different, and I'll explain why later, but I just could not connect to these characters. I have no idea what was even going on for the first couple of chapters. The character's dialogue was more annoying to me than anything. So as far as the characters go... no...

BUT! The reason why I decided to give this book 4 stars despite the lack of relatable characters is this book has such beautiful world-building! WOW! WOW! WOW! The first chapter blew my mind away. It must be so beautiful inside Serban Andrei Mazilu's head *_*

I have to say I've never read a book, Self-Published or Traditionally Published, that can paint such beautiful mental images like this! Usually, I don't care about scenery or anything like that, as long as the characters hold my interest, I'm happy! But this is a very different kind of book, with a very different focus story-wise.

If you are like me and are more into character-driven stories, I honestly don't know how much you will get out of this book. But if you want some candy for your imagination I think this will be an adequate treat!

I can only start this off by saying this was an extraordinary read. I’ve been “hunting” for books that would keep me so hooked that I’d miss an entire night of sleep just to see what happens next. And yes, this is one of those books.

The action is fast-paced, the twists and the characters are always fresh and their reactions look so plausible, even for a fantasy world, that the spell of Crux never gets broken by some off-handed remark that reminds you it’s just a book. No, it’s as real as it can get while you’re reading it. You’re in that universe.

The beauty of the character craft is at its best when you realise that, like me, you have characters you’re rooting for, that you love more than others. But even though those characters appear only two or three times in the story, they manage to leave a powerful impression and a great degree of depth and complexity behind their actions.

Overall, an excellent fantasy book that leaves you thirsting for more to come. And I do hope the next installment will come quickly, because the story leaves so much to be continued. Thank you for a wonderful world where I lived several intense hours!

"I'm surprised you're still not getting it..."
"Get what? That this place is messed up so badly your existence actually makes sense?"
"Exactly! Why do illusion, magic and surreal things still surprise you?"

Reality. Killer of dreams, mother of nightmares. A cruel bitch, juggling destinies, smashing lives with its bluntness.

"Sometimes," the mage whispered exhausted "I don't know which of you I hate more. But I guess a marriage based on insanity is as valid as any other..."

It wanted to bite and claw at the concept. It felt like those poor material shells had no such right. They were just... pods. Simple containers for beings that defied the laws set by the Creator. And that, in its essence, was worthy to be called a miracle.

"Time, space and love are all the same in any dimension you care to name: relative and conventional."

"No worries: you can trust me."
"No, I can't.", he said with a grin. "But anyone lacking a sense of irony so badly must be either stupid or genuinely sincere."

He wanted to ask her about love and if that didn't count for something. In every movie and every book, especially the holy one, that concept was the guide for a repentant person's path to enlightenment. But he realized love came in different forms and if she had so much love to give to the Light, there was certainly a sinister adoration for Darkness as well. Love was a concept, but the deeds in its name were what really mattered. Love, loyalty, courage... sacrifice. He was better off just putting all of them out of his head and hope that they at least played AC/DC in the torture pits.

"I can't believe I'm doing this. I came to kill a demon which turned out to be a lot more persuasive than I thought. He convinced me to kill other demons, then I destroyed some angels and now I'm stuck with protecting a human on a quest to release a cherub... Somehow, along the way, I think I've lost track of what my purpose really is."

When talking about a book, any book, that has left the reader with a good impression, words and phrases like "fast paced action" "thrilling" "exciting" "suspenseful" "engaging" "a fascinating read" are heard very often. I will refrain from using any of those words regarding my experience with Crux, lest I fall into cliche: the book has it all, and those who have read it before me have already given it its deserved praise, using those exact descriptors. I don't ask you to take my word for it; I ask you to buy the book, read it, and see for yourselves! And I ask for your patience, as this review will not be a short blurb about a book I enjoyed, but rather a rendition of how this book reached out to me from beyond the story and made me think and see things in a manner that perhaps the author didn't even intend.

Far from being your run-of-the-mill Good vs. Evil scheme, The Angellove Society: Crux brings together the most unlikely of companions, to aid the most unlikely of champions - a frail mortal girl from the United States release the First of the Cherubs from her arcane pan-dimensional prison...on an alien planet! The author manages to expertly avoid stereotypes and overkill while putting together a literary mash-up of epic proportions that will make your mind spin: in one single book, we are introduced to a very wide array of mythical beings that have haunted our imaginations ever since man first drew crude paintings on a cave wall: angels, demons, their half-human progeny, shape shifters, vampires, were-beasts (what? you thought the wereWOLF was the only were-creature out there? Ha! Think again!), elementals, spirits, and even cyborg-like aliens! If you can imagine it, Crux has it!

I will avoid going too much into plot details - I would hate to take away from your pleasure of finding out by yourself just how intricate of a supernatural web Serban Andrei Mazilu weaves in his book, but I will tell you this: beyond being a great fantasy read, sprinkled generously with action, humor (more or less dark, which makes it even more delicious!) and a plot full of unexpected twists and turns, what The Angellove Society - Crux has done for me is that it has introduced me to a group of characters that I have traveled with, fought alongside, and ended up, 315 pages later, being friends with. And those friends have shown me, through their actions, the value of courage, and of standing up for what one believes in. They have taught me the worth and weight of choice, and the inestimable power of free will - as well as the responsibility it comes with. And last, but not least, I've learned the importance of self-control, and keeping one's own inner demons at bay - from one particular character I've grown quite fond of. I will let you figure out which one by reading the book!

The Angellove Society - Crux is available now on Amazon (e-book and paperback) as well as other major online book sellers.

*I Received this book from the Author via Lover's of Paranormal on GoodReads*

The story itself is pretty much your typical half-demon , half-angel war story complete with the races having a world to share. The world in this one though seems to be a form a limbo a place where souls who haven't done enough good to go to heaven, or enough bad to go to hell end up until they decide their fates. IT has it's own creator as well, one of God's firsts. The second twist that separates this story for others of this type is Kara, a human that is still very much alive that finds herself in Crux with the purpose to save the inhabitants from themselves.
I will begin with the formalities so I can get down to the story itself. This book needs a LOT of work in the Editing department. It seems as though the author was confused on how the name for the human savior should be spelled. In the same dialogue more than once it was spelled Nilithar, and then Nillithar. While the author uses large words a lot in the book, the grammatical errors take away and make it seem as though the author simply had a thesaurus sitting there to pluck words from. I would suggest having this book re-editing as soon as humanly possible.
The story bounces around a LOT. I found myself confused as to how Kara was both on Crux, as well as in a hospital room on Earth. That bit of information is nowhere explained in the book.
I would recommend this book to anyone who likes the whole good vs evil, angels versus demons, with tons of detailed action.
Over all I give this book 3 of 5 paws. If the author takes care of the grammatical issues I will be able to give it a better rating.

This was one of the worst books I've read and I'm not that pretentious. But I've definitely read better fan fiction than this. Maybe I'm a bit old fashioned or whatever you want to call it but I just wished the story would have followed a more traditional script in terms of created mythology and character building. It was a bit all over the place for me, starting with the number of characters and following with the meager depiction of all the realms and planes the action took place onto. Also the dialogue was pretty excruciating for me, oscillating between the forced and concrete speech of the nephalem and the badass Willis wanna be speech of the rest of the characters. Not to mention the phrasing and the underused vocabulary. The imagination was lacking because everything the author tried to describe reminisced of really badly conceived old movies. It was a cliche for the bigger part and I found myself confused many a times. I think the story would have worked better for a graphic novel, but it would still have to be heavily edited. But that's just my opinion on it. I prefer other types of stories. (Better stories that is)

Wow, there is a lot going on in this book. Crux by Serban Andrei Mazilu is angels and demons, multiple dimensions, giant characters, (lots of giant characters), multiple story lines, all coming together into a seamless HEA. It does, however, leave lots of possibilities open for a new series of events, and I cannot wait to see which direction Mazilu takes.

I really tried to read this, but it just did not grab my attention like other books. I am not sure if the story line did not appeal to me or if it were the characters, but I just could not finish it.

I received this book from LoP for an honest review.

The Angellove Society: Crux by Serban Andrei Mazilu
I thought this book was very well written but hard to follow the story. A battle between good and evil set on another planet.
