Falling in love wasn't part of the plan... Helen Crofton yearns to find acceptance and respect in the colonies. She convinces her charitable society to raise funds selling tarts, even though she doesn’t know how to bake or run a business. Handsome, irritating Captain Carter seems determined to point out every one of her flaws, but Helen is just as resolved to prove she can succeed without the advice of the rudest man she’s ever had the misfortune to meet. When he unexpectedly comes to her aid, Nathaniel reveals a kindness Helen never expected.

Nathaniel Carter is far too busy working out how to smuggle tea into Philadelphia to waste time finding a wife, and even if he wasn’t, he’s certain Miss Helen Crofton wouldn’t look twice at a man like him. However, one surprising conversation with Helen is all it takes is to disrupt his careful plans and leave him longing for the love he’s never known.

This was an enjoyable read but there was just something missing for me. I think it was mainly the lead character of Helen. She appeared to be headstrong, impatient and thoughtless and then at other times she kept bursting into tears. Maybe, if I read the first book in the series, it may give more of her background. However, Helen does improve as the story continues and she does seem to have a generous heart but doesn’t always go about things in the right way. Captain Nathaniel Carter is a self made man and he and Helen have a love / hate relationship but could it develop into something more? I received a copy and have voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I love a story that has action and romance and also manages to teach me some history on the side.
This is a perfect historical romance, delightfully fun. It has a strong female lead who also feels historically appropriate. Helen and Nathaniel are complex and well rounded and relatable. Some of the side characters are a bit one dimensional, but they add the fun to the story.

I would recommend it to my daughter to read, it is clean but not preachy, simplistic, or boring.

I would love a “here’s the true history” section at the end of the story to dive into the facts even more, although the author has a website that covers some of that.

The author's writing style drew me into the story right from the beginning. The main characters, Helen and Nathaniel, had an interesting dynamics between them. This was a quick short read and I finished this book in one sitting. I hated to put it down.

I was given an advance copy of this novella by the author. My review was voluntary and my opinions were my own. I'm looking forward to reading the next book in this series.

Lovely story

Great addition to this series. This story was about the older sister Helen. Between courting and mystery, it gives a nice look at history while telling a compelling tale! Good read!

A Lady to Lead was incredibly written. Helen learned life lessons in friendship and love. I look forward to reading future books in the Sisters of the Revolution.
