Annals Of Mewar

Rate this book
A definite and detailed history of the Rajputs that is also remarkably readable.

Annals of Mewar by James Tod presents the illustrious history of the Sisodia Rajputs who presided over the land of Mewarand the vaunted fortress of Chittor. Part history, part legend, this is an account of the saffron-robed heroes who guarded Mewar's frontiers, defending her against repeated invasions, and valued honour above all else. Abridged and retold by C. H. Payne, this book is a colorful narrative - complete with illustrations - about legendary rulers like Bappa Rawal, Rana Sanga, and the jewel of Rajputana, Maharana Pratap. Annals of Mewar is a tribute to the spirit of the martial Rajput clan.

A fast paced history of Mewar and the Rajputs. Written by an English colonel in the 1800s, this book is a crash course in the evolution of mewar, it's rulers, the rivalries, treachery and eventual decline. The character arcs could inspire a GOT adaptation. There are biased visible, but overall the book gave me a whole new perspective on the history of the region. Recommended.

A book which is only one small part from now lost Encyclopedic "Annals and Antiquities of Rajasthan" by C.H Payne, this book focuses on the Mewar Kingdom and the numerous linages which ruled there.Even though it may get boring through times, what is interesting in this book is to see the same treachery and foolishness repeated again and again caused due to too much self pride and a inappropriate sense of vanity. Even though cornered by Mughals, and controlling a small swath of land, the pride of these kings and their flag bearers amazes you. Many a time leading to their demise. But at the same time, their bravery, valour and chivalry would also amaze you.

Also, after reading this book I came to know that Bhosles, the martial Maratha clan, which produced Chattrapati Shivaji, one of the greatest Indian military leader and King, consider themselves as descendants of Sisodia rajput clan, who migrated from Rajasthan to Deccan.

Not at all readable. Very boringly written. It expected it to be like "The Heroines of India". Nowhere near to that.

The book would have been better if it had some maps of the region. It must be read as a part of annals and antiquities for a better understanding
