Paintings accompany poems about the life of Jesus, the gospel message, and Christian life by William Cowper, George Herbert, Christina Rossetti, and other poets
Greg Olsen was raised in a farming community in rural Idaho. His paintings are deeply influenced by his life experiences and spiritual journeys and strive to convey stories that speak to the soul.
Olsen’s art has found a place in notable institutions, including the Pentagon, the NCAA Hall of Fame, the US Forest service, and numerous religious and educational settings.
In 1988, a transformative visit to Jerusalem deeply enriched his spiritual and artistic perspectives. This journey would lay the groundwork for his future works, especially in the realm of Christian art. In 1993, he signed a deal with Mill Pond Press, propelling his Christian-themed works into the national spotlight.
This book has beautiful art by Greg Olsen, along with descriptions of his paintings, and then several pages of detailed sections of those paintings. I like that! It also has some great poetry. However, most of the poems in this book are pretty heavy (quite a few going back to the 17th century) and they are not easy to read. They're the kinds of things I had to read very slowly, with plenty of footnotes and discussion afterward, back in my college days. So this book is probably meant to be a lovely, light piece of reading--lovely art and poetry--but it's far from light (at least the poetry part). I finally gave up on it because it would be easier for me to read these poems in my old literary anthologies, full of footnotes and my own class notes. Just being honest!
Greg Olsen's art is magnificent! He paints the Savior, pictures from the Bible, Book of Mormon and Church history. Coupled with divine poetry, this book is a spiritual feast! A few of the poems were pretty deep, but otherwise, a wonderful book to own.
Along with James Christensen, John Howe, and Darrell Sweet, Greg Olsen is in my top 5 favorite contemporary artists. I look forward to getting my hands on a copy of this!
