Gerald "Gerry" Malcolm Durrell was born in India in 1925. His elder siblings are Lawrence Durrell, Leslie Durrell, and Margaret Durrell. His family settled on Corfu when Gerald was a boy and he spent his time studying its wildlife. He relates these experiences in the trilogy beginning with My Family And Other Animals, and continuing with Birds, Beasts, And Relatives and The Garden Of The Gods. In his books he writes with wry humour and great perception about both the humans and the animals he meets.

On leaving Corfu he returned to England to work on the staff of Whipsnade Park as a student keeper. His adventures there are told with characteristic energy in Beasts In My Belfry. A few years later, Gerald began organising his own animal-collecting expeditions. The first, to the Cameroons, was followed by expeditions to Paraguay, Argentina and Sierra Leone. He recounts these experiences in a number of books, including The Drunken Forest. Gerald also visited many countries while shooting various television series, including An Amateur Naturalist. In 1958 Gerald Durrell realised a lifelong dream when he set up the Jersey Zoological Park, followed a few years later by the Jersey Wildlife Preservation Trust.

Gerald was married twice; Jacquie Durrell (1951-1979), Lee Durrell (1979-1995).

Gerald Durrell's style is exuberant, passionate and acutely observed. He died in 1995.

I must say that I was very glad when Juanita got better, not only because I did not want to lose her, but also because it is very exhausting to sleep with a playful peccary in your bed.

I'd bet not many people could say that!

As always Gerald Durrell is an entertaining raconteur, even in a book aimed at older children. Durrell never talks down to his audience and his love for the animals he collected for the world famous Jersey Zoo is plain to see. I'm scared to check with Wikipedia how many of the species he mentions are now endangered (the peccaries look to be safe though.)

For me, what makes the book are the beautiful black and white photographs by Wolfgang Suschitsky. Some of the bird pictures - every feather stands out! I will mention some photos could be clearer & this might be due to the challenge of photographing some of these creatures - or that photography has come a long way since the early 60s.

I really fell for this little guy (for some reason the name Slow Loris makes me giggle!)

Sadly, Wikipedia classifies the Slow Loris as vulnerable.

While Durrell was a gifted writer, he never had a deep love of writing. he did it to raise funds for his beloved animals. This could explain the ending, which is a little abrupt. I could feel the impatience to get back to his work.

Raamat mis väidetavalt pidi taastama minu usu loomaaedadesse, kuid samal ajal kritiseerib pea kõiki tolleaegseid (ja ega nad palju muutunud pole) loomaaedu. Meeldib meeldib meeldib!!

Mis tahes metsloomade kollektsiooni pidamisel tuleks juhinduda kolmest põhiprintsiibist:
1) viia läbi kõigi loomaliikide võimalikult põhjalikud bioloogilised uuringud, pöörates erilist tähelepanu just neile külgedele, mida looduses on raske või kulukas uurida ja mis ühteaegu võivad kaasa aidata antud liigi säilimisele tema loomulikus elukeskkonnas;
2) osutada abi tõsiselt ohustatud loomaliikidele, luues ideaaltingimustes nende paljunduskolooniaid eesmärgiga nad tulevikus loodusesse tagasi asustada, kindlustades nii liigi säilimist;

An account of Gerald Durrell's favorite animals including photos. As always, it's full of humor and detailed descriptions of the animals' shenigans.

Short vignettes about some of the animals the author has collected from different parts of the world, ones that he particularly liked and kept rather than selling to other zoos. It was written more for 6th graders than for adults, which was a shame. The photographs were in black & white, and would have been spectacular in color. Amusing glimpses into the characters of different animals.

This is a very old-fashioned book! It has black and white photos of each animal Durrell describes in his zoo. The book is good for all ages, as it is a series of friendly descriptions of his zoo animals, with stories of how he acquired the animals and some info about each type of animal.
