Lev Nikolayevich Tolstoy (Russian: Лев Николаевич Толстой; most appropriately used Liev Tolstoy; commonly Leo Tolstoy in Anglophone countries) was a Russian writer who primarily wrote novels and short stories. Later in life, he also wrote plays and essays. His two most famous works, the novels War and Peace and Anna Karenina, are acknowledged as two of the greatest novels of all time and a pinnacle of realist fiction. Many consider Tolstoy to have been one of the world's greatest novelists. Tolstoy is equally known for his complicated and paradoxical persona and for his extreme moralistic and ascetic views, which he adopted after a moral crisis and spiritual awakening in the 1870s, after which he also became noted as a moral thinker and social reformer.

His literal interpretation of the ethical teachings of Jesus, centering on the Sermon on the Mount, caused him in later life to become a fervent Christian anarchist and anarcho-pacifist. His ideas on nonviolent resistance, expressed in such works as The Kingdom of God Is Within You, were to have a profound impact on such pivotal twentieth-century figures as Mohandas Gandhi and Martin Luther King, Jr.

I skipped War and Peace during high school and never really considered reading the book because it was synonymous for very long and boring books.

Then I discovered that this is actually a historical novel about times during Napoleonic wars from Russian perspective. I already read about Napoleonic wars, but from Napoleon's perspective, so this was refreshing and educational about Russia at the beginning of the 19th century. All the characters are nobels (duches and the counts) from the upper class of Russian society.

This is 2nd book in the series of four, and it covered 1806‐1811. the period of peace between two wars. This book describes mostly the life of nibels at that time..

Here is one interesting quote that describes how Russians thought of French at that time:
‘How can we fight the French, Prince?’ said Count Rastopchin. ‘Can we arm ourselves against our teachers and divinities? Look at our youths, look at our ladies! The French are our Gods: Paris is our Kingdom of Heaven.’

This is my assessment of this book, War and Peace Book 2 by Leo Tolstoy, according to my 7 criteria:
1. Too long and strenuous action - exciting and/or short - 4 stars
2. Boring - fun - 4 stars
3. It is not difficult to read (as for non-English native speakers - I read it on Kindle in Croatian
4. Predictable (common) - good story (unusual) - 3 stars
5. Shallow story - has a deeper meaning - 3 stars.
6. The story is mass and unfinished - the story is clear, understandable, and well-rounded - 3 stars
7. Dry and uninspired style of writing - Smooth style with humorous and fun characters - 3 stars
