Dreams don't come true, but nightmares do.

When Zeke Garrett is reactivated to mentor the next dreamer that pops up on the Somnium's radar, he's sure it's a mistake. The covert organization is still struggling to conceal the fallout from his last assignment, a fatal catastrophe.

From the first blast of her pepper spray, he realizes this neonati, whose nightmares manifest vampires straight from the pages of pop-culture, is more than he bargained for-a potential dreamwalker. But before her training can begin, he has to convince the stubborn, mouthy woman she's not dreaming.

Maggie Mackey hasn't slept well in a month, but that doesn't explain how the monsters from her nightmares suddenly seem so real. Or why, when a team of intimidating, sword-wielding toughs rescue her, their leader captures her mouth in a swift, knee-weakening kiss.

Once he tears himself away, Zeke's mental forehead smacking begins. Their embrace has confirmed they have a rare tangible bond, a phenomenon which fooled him once before. Somehow he must tutor the woman of his dreams without getting attached. Otherwise her nightmares could become his own.

Contains lots of cussing, pop culture references and monsters with nasty, big, pointy teeth.

Fast-paced urban fantasy. Some dreamers can manifest their nightmares, and it's the job of the Somnium to locate and then mentor such dreamers, who range in ability from L1 to L5. The magic element was unique and well-thought out. Loved the way they distinguished between 'Whedon' vamps and 'Nosferatus'. Zeke and Maggie were fun and had oodles of sexual tension. I'll be cheering for them to get together in book two.

A difficult novella to review.

Parts were excellent - the idea that some people have the ability to bring wraiths into reality through their dreams, wraiths which take the form of whatever nightmare creature the person has dreamed of, was excellent. I loved that our heroine dreamed "Whedon" vampires.

I also liked that the organisation which sought out and helped/neutralised these dreamers was not military funded and had to rely on semi-blackmail of less talented dreamers who chose to work in normal jobs.

Zeke and his team have identified Maggie as a new dreamer - possible very highly skilled - but they need to get her to control her power before she unleashes more wraiths into the world. But Zeke and his team have recently had a major disaster (only gradually explained) and are slow to trust Maggie. Especially when it appears that she is opening more holes for wraiths to enter through.

I could just about accept that mentors had to sleep with their trainees, touching as much flesh as possible, in order to be with them in their dreams - especially since the female operative said the guys always make it sound skeevy. What I didn't lies was the way Zeke, the mentor, behaved around Maggie. Some of this is explained because he identified her first in the dream world so they have a connection which makes them feel a desire to be with each other, but the way in which he bullied her and stripped her of her nightdress because it was covering too much flesh really put me off.

The end of the book indicates that there is someone somewhere manipulating matters and trying to destroy Zeke and his team - we don't know why.

I got this novella because I read a very favourable review of the second book and wanted to see if I liked the premise before paying out real money for a book. I think the price will determine whether I buy or put it on my wishlist for when it reaches a suitable price point for me to take a chance on Zeke and his misogyny.

A bit confusing at times and often found myself re-reading a passage to get it to sink in. A bit disappointed that the book just seemed to stop before the character's relationship fully developed. I do feel a bit ripped off that I didn't get my HEA and I think the publisher really needs to inform their readers that a book is going to finish before it's even started. I may yet read the 2nd book in the series to see if it will continue to interest me as I believe it has potential - once I can get a nail on all the differenc character's roles ;).

If you don't mind the first book in a series to be, basically, the set up for the actual story this book was okay. Personally I'm not a fan so I didn't like the book and I REALLY doubt I'll go for anymore of the series.
