FROM HIS WEBSITE: With more than 12 million novels in print, Frank Peretti is nothing short of a publishing phenomenon and has been called “America’s hottest Christian novelist.”
Peretti is a natural storyteller who, as a youngster in Seattle, regularly gathered the neighborhood children for animated storytelling sessions. After graduating from high school, he began playing banjo with a local bluegrass group. He and his wife were married in 1972, and Peretti soon moved from touring with a pop band to launching a modest Christian music ministry. Peretti later spent time studying English, screen writing and film at UCLA and then assisted his father in pastoring a small Assembly of God church. In 1983, he gave up his pastoring position and began taking construction jobs to make ends meet. While working at a local ski factory, he began writing This Present Darkness, the book that would catapult him into the public eye. After numerous rejections from publishers and a slow start in sales, word-of-mouth enthusiasm finally lifted This Present Darkness onto a tidal wave of interest in spiritual warfare. The book appeared on Bookstore Journal’s bestseller list every month for more than eight years. Peretti’s two spiritual warfare novels, This Present Darkness (1998) and Piercing the Darkness (1989), captivated readers, together selling more than 3.5 million copies. The Oath was awarded the 1996 Gold Medallion Award for best fiction.
For kids, Peretti wrote The Cooper Kids Adventure Series (Crossways and Tommy Nelson), which remains a best-selling series for children with sales exceeding 1 million copies. In August 2000, Peretti released the hilarious children’s audiocassette series titled Wild and Wacky Totally True Bible Stories, reprising his role as Mr. Henry, the offbeat substitute Sunday School teacher found in two Visual Bible for Kids videos.
Peretti released his first-ever non-fiction book, The Wounded Spirit in 2000, which quickly became a best-seller. The book addresses the pain of “wounded spirits” and was written as a result of painful childhood experiences.
Frank Peretti and his wife, Barbara Jean, live in the Western U.S. In spite of sudden fame and notoriety, Frank still lives a simple, well-rounded life that includes carpentry, banjo making, sculpturing, bicycling and hiking. He is also an avid pilot.
I richly enjoyed both Piercing the Darkness, This present Darkness, and The Prophet. I even enjoyed The Visitation, but felt that Mr. Peretti got too far off into to fear in The Oath, so I chose not to read Monster. I worked in a Christian bookstore for four years and could not read through a Ted Deckker book to recommend it to anyone, seemed to be a oxymoron, Christian "thriller" I even heard someone say both Mr. Peretti and Mr. Dekker were like a "Christian" Steven King...that I believe is the oxymoron... 1 John 4:18 There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.
Frank Peretti is one of my FAVORITE authors, and, if you endeavor to read this or several other of his books, I believe you will join the club! First and foremost, his writings are from a Christian/Spiritual Warfare perspective, therefore, if you are a person of faith, you will find his books exciting and on edge. Heck, I would dare say that even if you aren't a person of faith, you will find his writing intriguing. With Piercing the Darkness/This Present Darkness, I can close my eyes and visualize exactly what his writing describes. The Prophet is simply a good book, well written. Not going into detail, I will simply say that it will not be a waste of your time: a great read, and will leave you much to consider.
All these books are very riveting and thrilling books, which are difficult to put down. Though fictional, they do help us to become more aware of the spiritual realm, which is not fictional.
This Present Darkness, book 1, was epic. Discovered this hidden gem in high school, tucked away in the library just gathering some dust (and just a little bit exaggerated). I wonder if people from school have ever found this book and what they thought of it. I know my best friend was thrilled when I showed her this. :)
It's a 'supernatural' thriller, full of suspense. It is worth your time, trust me. :) I am so happy I've re-read it.
Read each one of these. The Prophet was definitely good, and This Present Darkness and Piercing the Darkness joined the shelf of my favorites, providing a gripping view behind the curtain of the visible world into the spiritual world that affects us every day. Overall, I enjoyed them all.
LOVE THESE BOOKS! They are truly Christian classics, and have me coming back to re-read time and time again. They truly make you think about the world around you. Frank has absolutely had a profound effect on not just my life but also my writing style. I grew up reading his works, (including these awesome books) and now as a published author myself, I am proud to say he is still one of my favorite authors who has impacted the way I see things and how I write. These books are phenomenal!
'This Present Darkness' & 'Piercing the Darkness'. I read them when I was young and many times since. I consider them some of those most important books ever written. Though the characters are fictional, the subject matter is not. If you are 'religious' at all or believe in any kind of deity, this is essential reading!
This was the number one book that inspired by interest in angels and demons and the effect a Godless and evil society can have on everyone. I think these books should have become movies. 15 years later I am an author who hopes to make a difference by sharing a similar theme. I highly recommend all three of these books. S.G. I've read this set of books twice now and can see myself reading it again in the future. I love the word pictures that Frank Peretti paints! You can actually see (in your mind's eye) what all is taking place. When you think God has left you, pick one of these up and know that God is still at work and His angels are still there doing the will of the Lord.
This book is an excellent read. The story is captivating and intriguing. I found myself sucked into this story of how the world we see is profoundly effected by supernatural influence.
I am still not sure why these three books were bundled together. Prophet had nothing to do with the other two books. I really enjoyed Piercing the Darkness and This Present Darkness. They were both very well written, characters were developed so that I felt like I met them in person, and the story line moved along at the perfect pace.
Prophet, however, was very long in the tooth - characters were shallow and predictable, the story was slow and the ending was anticlimactic.
I gave the trilogy 4 stars because I liked two of the books more than I disliked the third.
This man has a lot to say and says it in the most entertaining way. I don't take them literally but they do say much about human nature and life. I read them years ago but remember them to be a very good read. Worth your while if you like this kind of fiction.
One of the best books I’ve ever read!! Frank Peretti is an amazing author that keeps you intrigued throughout the entire book. This series is a great perspective on what spiritual warfare is actually like.
