A fifteen thousand word light-hearted Regency sex comedy containing explicit love scenes.

When his adorable neighbor Lucy Widden came upon him in his youth during a tryst with a willing milkmaid in a local hayfield, Lord Alistair Abingdon knew she would never forgive him. And he’d been right. Now many years later, he has returned home, and is determined to win Lucy for himself. He just isn’t sure how to go about it. He’d been home for several weeks and she hadn’t paid him a single visit. He was aware she would soon be going to London for the Season. She would have to talk to him there wouldn’t she?

But his plans are all thrown awry, when Lucy is thrown from her horse, and Lucy’s father Sir Widden sends for him with a very special request. Marry Lucy immediately. Because Lucy has apparently lost not only her memory in the fall, but something else every debutante who wished to make an advantageous match needed. Her hymen. The bumpy ride on her spooked horse had cost her the ability to proclaim herself a true virgin.

If someone had handed him everything he had ever wanted on a silver platter Alistair could not have been more thrilled. Lucy was going to be his. But because he was well aware of Lucy’s mischievous spirit, he did not for an instant believe that she had lost her memory. And that could only mean one thing. Lucy wanted him and did not know how to say so. As for the other thing, well, time would tell. And he looked forward to finding out.

This was a fun and cute regency romance. You can tell right from the beginning that the male and female leads are meant to be together. They had grown up together and vowed to marry, but because of an incident regarding a milkmaid on Alistair’s part (maybe because he was 5 years older than Lucy), Lucy and him do not speak for the next 5 years. During this time Alistair leaves for college and with help from a personal maid, Lucy learns to look at things differently. Upon his return, Lucy is ready with a plan to get him back.

It was well written for the time period it was designated for. The part about the hymen breaking was a little…strange or perhaps just different but did have an impact on some of the scenes. I liked that we were given the point of view of Lucy’s maid, Delilah, a few times. The title fit well with the story. It really did seem like a cat and mouse game.

The reason I didn’t give this a full 5 star was that despite knowing that romances especially those written for this time period always mention the male lead experimenting with other women, I had VERY high hopes that this one would not be the case. This is because the reason for their not speaking for so many years was because of Alistair and the maid and that seemed to be the main reason Lucy was upset and Alistair felt guilt. He was so much in love with her and though he felt really bad about that, he went on to be with other women in college. Which would be normal, but since their separation resulted from him and another woman, and since he loved her so much and automatically and from the beginning planned on going back for her, I really thought he would not have these other relationships. It would have been a great gift to Lucy. And it was a little weird because, the old incident, which was somewhat little compared to the college moments, Alistair feels guilty of only that. So, even though 98% of stories including separation are similar to this one, it just seemed like this one, and I was SO thinking it would be like this, would show Alistair being with no one for Lucy.

Three stars!

I liked the humorous parts of the story. Also, I liked the game that Lucy and Alistair were playing on each other. However, I felt like it was too short and just ended in the middle.

Cute byplay between the hero and heroine, one that could easily have been expanded to a full-length story. Too bad the maid wasn't in the story more. I'm sure she would steal the scene.
