"The Raven" by Kimberly Brockman is a beautifully written romance between 17 year old Rayne Holloway and new kid on the block Chase Turner. Without much parental support Rayne strays away from home to spend most of her time with her best friend's family. Tormented by unexplainable nightmares and abandoned by her best friend Alex she is more than ready to be courted by the charismatic but mysterious Chase, who seems to her too good to be true.
The first half of the book slowly and gently describes the build of the tension between Rayne and Chase but then he needs to reveal his dark secret to her and this triggers a chain of events which I won't spoil for you by giving anything more away. This is a paranormal romance and the title gives you another clue. Let me just say that things get more action-packed and emotional.
What I liked most about this book was the even speed and the long build up of characters and the setting of the scene before we embark on the paranormal side. Too many writers of the genre barge in with all the gadgets to create tension and loose the caring touch for the protagonists. Brockman invested time and it pays of as we are willing to stand by our new friends as they brave the challenges and adventures ahead.At that point the pace of course picks up.
Being the first in a series this is fortunately not the last of sweet Rayne and handsome Chase.
I congratulate the author for her skilful and well crafted debut.

Ok let me start of by saying “WOOOOOOOOOOW!!!!!!!!” Uhm I want my own Chase!! This book is absolutely Amazeballs! The cliffhanger at the end had my jaw dropping and me saying wtf. Kimberly when does the next one come out?????? Because I definitely need to know what happens next. This book had me so hooked that I missed my shows (I NEVER miss one of my shows!)
Rayne’s life is all kinds of crazy. Creepy dreams where she actually wakes up with scratches, stuff appearing in mirrors, mysterious new (and oh so sexy) guy in town, a silly best friend and an absent mother.
Ok I’m rambling so I’m gonna go rock back and forth in a corner til the next book is out lol

Wonderful Paranormal Romance! Fans of Twilight, Fallen, and Hush Hush will thoroughly enjoy this thrill ride mystical young adult romance. Just closing the book now and imagining myself in Rayne's place! FIVE STARS from this avid paranormal romance fan! No vampires needed! Great job Ms. Brockman! Looking forward to your next book!

I really liked this book, perhaps even loved it considering that it has popped back into my head every day since reading it. It is one that I am thoroughly looking forward to following up and as soon as the sequel is released it will take precedence over my reading list.
Something about Chase keeps you guessing right up till the end of this. He does the anti-hero thing brilliantly and yet he is there to protect, guide, heal and bargain for her even if it means losing his own freedom. Rayne too is so much more than the reader knows…Just like her we have no idea why she is targeted by the shadow creeper guy… Just what is it about her that makes her so special? Brockman presents characters that keep us guessing which side they are on and builds reader suspense right up to the inevitable and yet breath-catching climax. The end made me want to scream and had me scouring for a sequel that does not yet exist… *patience Hagnut patience…

I was given this book by the author in return for an honest review.
What an incredible story! I absolutely LOVED it and seriously hope that there will be a second book.
Rayne is such a great character and following her on all the great twist's and turns is brilliant!
I was hooked from the start and read this in one sitting :)

Who or what is the “Raven”? Seventeen-year-old Rayne has been having dark dreams of late, as well as encounters with nefarious individuals who don’t have her best intentions at heart. A mysterious and handsome new student, Chase, arrives at her school, and while he has answers, the road will only get more dangerous from here.
The intricate back story of the villains is something I particularly enjoyed, as to who or what the Shadows are and what Chase’s connection is to them. There’s also the mystery of how Rayne is involved in an epic struggle that has been going on for a while, and I’m eager to see how she comes into her own in following installments. Raven promises young adult readers center-stage romance, mysterious atmosphere, and danger that steadily creeps in until the second half of the book, you’re racing to the end. (The gorgeous cover sets the mood as well!) I loved that Rayne will not settle on being a star-crossed lover, and has something up her sleeve for the next installment! This is the first book in a trilogy.

I began to read Raven because the cover art caught my attention and I'm so glad it did! From the moment that Rayne meets Chase I couldn't put the book down until it was finished. He's the perfect bad boy with a hidden good side that makes you root for him until the end. I laughed, fell in love, and got teary eyed. Wonderful and sweet romance! I can't wait until they solve this puzzle then find out who Rayne belongs with. I'm going to watch the clock until the next book is released!

I'm a GUY and Raven actually changed the way I feel about romances. EXCELLENT beginning to a series! It isn't just a mushy gushy romance for girls. This is a super cool and action packed romance. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves a good paranormal romance, mystery, and lots of action. Looking forward to reading the second installment!

Like everyone else I have too many books on my Goodreads to-read shelf and it's become a strategic decision making quandary to decide what to read next. What I am in the mood to read now, something spicy, funny, mysterious etc? After reading the synopsis to quite a few books I read Raven's and it sounded interesting and mysterious and peeked my curiosity. Boy I had no idea how mysterious a read this story was going to be.
Raven started as a slow paced story of mostly fear, regret and sadness. Rayne is a young girl dealing with constant terror and torture filled nightmares and haunting's that make her think she was losing her mind. And not only that, but Rayne was mourning the death of her older sister who she had a very close relationship with. I understood Rayne's sadness but I understood even more when the events leading up to her sister's death were revealed. Rayne blamed herself for her sister's demise, she felt like she wasn't there when her sister needed her the most and later because she found out that she was the actual target. And why was Rayne the target? That's where the mystery came in, half way through the book I still didn't know entirely what was going on. I had some information but not enough to figure out what or why is Rayne's life in turmoil and why is she being stalked by evil forces. This story was so mysterious and intriguing I couldn't wait to find out what the heck is the truth of it all.
I was so happy when Chase Turner appeared in her life, yes he brought his own dangers with him to Rayne's life, but she needed someone to lean on other than her peppy friend Danielle. Chase was confident, a huge flirt, and the swoony good looks to go with all that. I so hoped that he wouldn't play games with Rayne's emotions because no surprised there he brought out her insecurities. He was sweet, and instantly protective of Rayne. Chase is a Raven, the product of an immortal and a human, which made him an immortal himself but his background stems from dark forces which made him afraid that telling Rayne would make him lose her.
Then there is Alexander Lawson, Rayne's childhood friend who abandoned her with a move to England, only to return looking better than he every had, which had all the girls in school all over him. He was another mystery to figure out. Rayne wanted answers from him why he just disappeared from her life and then to return so out of the blue?
Rayne had a lot to deal with, evil haunting her and strange people warning her of her fate, a mysterious guy in her life, and lest not forget the horrible nightmares. I was so anxiety ridden for her safety and she drove me crazy how much she liked to walk everywhere. Every time someone offered her ride she turned it down, preferring to walk and she had me nervous every time. Gah.
Even though the world building took some time to develop the bits and pieces had me guessing on what the supernatural forces haunting Rayne might be and why. I'm still not a hundred percent sure on why 'they' wanted Rayne, but I did find out who they are. I don't want to give away anything so I won't say what it's all about but it has a lot to do with Chase and stuff that happened before he even existed that he was born into. This story was not high energy or action packed but it had a lot of other things going for it. The story development had me enamored, and it had characters who developed as the story progressed. You see different sides of them and changes to their persona depending on the situation. Raven was an absorbing story that made me think and by the end it had me tearing up.

Introduction of: Shadows, Ravens and Guardians. Love can conquer evil, but will it survive?
I purchased this book on Amazon after a GR friend recommended it. I've never read anything by this author. I was so engrossed with this story. I finished it quickly. The concept was very original, in my opinion. Ravens are procreated by Shadows/humans, which makes them Immortal with abilities. They have a down side though, they'll be hunted down to procure a place in Hell whether they go willingly or not. If they choose not to join, they will face an eternity of pain, anguish, and so on... The story is steady at the beginning and middle, but becomes fast paced towards the end. I have to say, this author did a great job at building up the story and characters. I found myself so engrossed in the story, I was leaning in my chair. LOL!!! Of course, I didn't realize this until a family member pointed it out to me. LOL!!! There were some mistakes, but not enough to keep me away from the story.The story has a touch of romance, mystery and intrigue.
Rayne is a teenager that has been through remarkable pain in her life. Death of her father, recent death of her sister, Lania, who died through questionable means of a white flames, and missing her best friend, Alex, who moved without any contact. She thinks she is going crazy. Having nightmares that leaves evidence for a brief time, strange people coming up to her with strange warnings regarding her soul, and seeing a man in the mirror that she feels, means to harm her. She has isolated herself from others, and it doesn't help that her mom has left her alone, to go to Italy. While trying to reconnect with another friend, she meets Chase Turner. She gravitates towards him. They spend time with one another, and she eventually discovers that he is different (healing, moves fast, and he is there when she is in trouble). Alex shows up out of the blue. She feels the animosity between Chase and Alex. As their relationship develops, many strange things began to occur and Chase comes out with his secret. Chase is caught by the Shadows. He sacrifices himself for Rayne. He puts her with Guardians for safekeeping. When she calms down, she sees Alex and asks for help to save Chase.
Not a lot was said about the Guardians, but my curiosity is piqued. Is Alex a Guardian? Is Rayne a threat to the Shadows? This is a great story that has the potential to become greater. I've already purchased, Toryn, next book. Maybe some of my questions will be answered. I've recommended this book to family/friends. Happy Reading!! Cheers!!!

~After reading
FINALLY!!! DONE!!!....well....all I can say is "A" for effort on creating this book. Sadly, I felt nothing for it. The main character Rayne was way like way to plain. Sounded like another character in another book I really didn't like at all and she never changed (total pain in the ass). Then there is Chase, not a bad kind of character, a little...off in the beginning. As for Alex, eh not bad a little off as well with the whole coming in and then going out and coming in and going out. Chase pretty much did the same thing here.
Not to be mean or anything, but the whole story was flipping everywhere and flat with going form one place to the next (not cool). One minute she's here, next shocking mystery, next accident, next someone gets hurt, next truth comes out, next a get together, lastly an argument get's out and everything spills, "shocking" ending and BAM! Don't get me wrong here, others might have different ideas and liking to this but I in some parts take after my grandmother on being blunt when it comes to books. Books is like candy to me, so delicious I crave more, and this one totally not what I expected. Complete let down on starting my whole summer book reading marathon. If a book takes me long like this, yeah, a total let down. The whole total puppy love here was like...ugh...made me gag and roll my eyes hoping it would end fast.(FORGET THE DAMN SALADS)
Since I do have my own opinions as well as everyone else, I have told my old high school librarian about this book and she has bought it for the whole school. I can't wait to hear and talk about this one. Perhaps there is a light at the end of this tunnel. There hasn't been a series I gave up on till close to the end (sadly I dig my own grave and read lame books with a lame damn story line sounding the same). I will read the next Raven book, always have to give second chances to see what will happen. Though I can't say I will be excited and don't know when I will bother getting back. Till then.

I don't get how this book get so many praises, sorry. The story is full of wholes! Rayne, the main character has those weird 'visions' like, the creepy guy in the mirror and also the creepy persons she keep meeting on the streets, but NEVER occurred to her to talk about this with Chase, since it's obvious that that has something to do with him! Chase, wants to keep her away from his bad 'friends', but every time he takes her to dinner, is always where those 'friends' are! Her friend Alex came back and act weird, give weirds advice about Chase, but Rayne never make any connection between them! Chase tells her someone wanted her dead but she never asked why! And then, Brett almost die, but everyone is happy to go to a concert! And the end.. such a cliche!! By the way, what happens with the main females characters of the stories, nowadays? They are always two timing! It's really annoying!Anyway, I don't feel so interested in read the second book. All the story is really weak!

I really loved this! I found Raven very interesting and mysterious. I can't stand the wait, but will sit on the edge of my seat until I read the second in this series. Chase, oh, what a heart breaker! He has a terrible devilish background, but a wonderful gift to bring light to his character. Rayne is clearly a damsel in distress, but she has something going for her that we've yet to understand. I love all the mystery and leads. I have to admit that I'm rooting for Alex all the way. A gorgeous best friend who was sent back from the dead to watch over you? *Whew!* I am anxious to watch these characters and mysteries unravel in this series.

Rayne has had a rough life, her sister was murdered and her best friend, Alex disappeared. When she meets Chase her life is turned upside down. We find ourselves in a paranormal romance. This is a quick paced read that pulls you in from the beginning. I can't wait for book two since this story leaves you on a cliffhanger. WaAR

This book has a place in the top of the list of the immortal/supernatural genre that has become so popular as of late. The characters jump off the page and capture you. This is a great pick for the summer. I want to read more.

I received the book from the author for an honest review.
Good and evil, as long as time exists, so long is the struggle going on between the two opposites. But the author took it one step further and the plot was about the struggle within Hell itself. The struggles that the immortal beings have, the changes they want to make-to turn away- and ultimately when they are captured, the torture that follows for eternity.
Raven was an interesting read, and although romance was evident it wasn't the main focus in the book.
It's about making the right choices, making sacrifices and accepting or being open minded to the supernatural things.
The main character, Rayne, had some wonderful attributes and you learned about her struggles with her sister's death, her struggle to accept the supernatural, as well as her feelings for Raven aka Chase. Her dreams were the catalyst for many of the events taken place in her life. Preparing her for the supernatural and coming to grips with the untimely death of her sister.
For me it is always interesting how parents are unattached or unavailable within any of the young adult genres, especially those that I have read so far. And how young adults tries to cope with things on their own. Maybe it is written like that on purpose, but to me it is disturbing and I always wonder about this. In this book it is very evident that no parents are involved with the young adults, leaving them to defend themselves. Leaving them confused, without stability and alone.
Overall a good book, well written and fast paced, which I can recommend. Although there were times that I was lost in the story not sure how we did get to the next scene, causing me to backtrack to get a better understanding. The author's story is unique and written with much compassion as we get to know Rayne and the characters that shared this book with her.

The concept behind the book fascinated me. I love new twists on concepts, and I've read a lot of immortal type books: vampires, angels, demons. New twists are always good.
However, what really got to me with this book was the lack of editing. The formatting of the book made it hard to read at times. Words ran together, such as "howI" making it look like "howl." Spacing was awkward, again making it hard to read at times. Incorrect word usage at times: "pierced my lips together" should have been "pursed my lips together." Paragraphs seemed to run together making for a wall of text. That is always hard to read, and at times came off as an "info dump." Personally, I would have also liked to have had more dialogue throughout. Editing would have also caught the continuity errors. The group rode to the concert with Alex, yet later it is stated Chase and Rayne are running for his bike. This wasn't the only instance that sent me back through the book to check that I'd read correctly.
There were also some questions I would have liked answered in this book. I realize this is the first part of a trilogy, and there needs to be something for the other books, but I just didn't understand why Rayne's parents were in Italy, and why her mother stayed and didn't take Rayne with her.

The name Raven had me thinking of the Raven boys before I started to read the book. I tried to get rid of that as soon as possible.
I loved the Raven Boys. Want to read book II asap. So I figured having that book in my head maybe judging this one against that one would be unfair.
I need not have worried. We are introduced to Rayne, a normal girl with a tragic past. She lost her sister in a fire. She lost her best friend when he moved.
So enters our second main protagonist, and all is not well. Rayne is like a moth to a flame. He is everything she needs and soon it becomes apparent that he is more than he should be. He is a Raven, son of a Shadow, and they are coming for him.
Rayne knows she should not get involved. She knows she should turn away...though she cannot.
I am not in the habit anymore of giving 5* ratings. I used to give them left, right and center but the more I read the more I have decided that I should let a 5* be what it is supposed to be. And this book, this original plot line, these characters. They deserve no less than a 5*.

Rayne is haunted by the memory of a fire which took her sister’s life and non-stop nightmares that plague her sleep each night. Suddenly, in a strange accident she meets Chase. Beautiful, dangerous, alluring, Chase. They began a romance.
This book was definitely for teen girls. Where I like romance somewhat, I’m not a hard core romancey person. The author writes very well, describes well, has great characters, but the amount of girly stuff in this book was hard for me to read. I did think the whole “man in the mirror” thing was pretty cool and such, I think I’d just would have liked a little bit less about Chase’s good looks. Her lore is great as well. I think most teen girls who are very into this type of book would enjoy it.

If you're looking for a read with a bit of romance this might be the thing for you. In fact, I would consider this book romantic horror as there elements from both genres. The romance elements are larger and are given more space though.
There are a lot of bad things that happens in this book which is what you expect in horror. At the same time there's an obvious chemistry between the two main characters which is what you expect to find in a romance. I thought it was a good intermeshing of the two.

I enjoyed reading this young adult book and look forward to the next installment! Ms. Brockman created a new spin in paranormal romance. Congrats on a great debut novel and hope there are many more to come!

I rather enjoyed this story as it involved unworldly beings from the Shadows and guardian angels. Me being me had it pretty sussed early on but I still enjoyed the evolving of the characters into their true beings

SUPER BOOK!
Fast read & enjoyable. There were funny times, sad times, and happy times. Overall very happy with Raven. Will recommend and Will def be looking for the next book!
